Betty P. Stockhill

Betty P. Stockhill, 79, died of natural causes April 1, 2001, in Mesa, Arizona where she was vacationing for the winter.

Betty was born Feb. 24, 1922, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to John and Lena Poe.

Betty graduated from high school and attended Penn College in Oskaloosa.

She married Ensign L. E. (Larry) Stockhill, then of Miles City, Dec. 11, 1943, in Oskaloosa.

They lived there while Larry was stationed at Ottumwa Naval Air Station.

After WWII, they moved to Miles City for two years, then to Whitefish for 10 years, and then to Kalispell.

Betty worked as an assistant librarian for five years, as secretary and bookkeeper at C&C; Plywood Corporation for 21 years, and also worked at her husband's business of Flathead Air Transport and Stockhill Aviation.

She enjoyed drawing and painting, golf, bridge, swimming, and line-dancing.

She was preceded in death by one son, Douglas Stockhill, who was killed in an airplane crash in 1976.

Betty is survived by her husband Larry Stockhill of Kalispell; son Michael Stockhill of Polson; granddaughter Ashley Stockhill of Renton, Wash.; and brother Jack Poe of Wapello, Iowa.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Mortuary & Crematory.

Elizabeth "Betty" Quaschnik

Elizabeth "Betty" Quaschnik, 92, passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at her home in Kalispell.

She was born May 14, 1908, in Cobalt, Canada, to Hugh and Jesse Cameron.

The family moved to the United States when she was 14 years old.

Betty was a very loved person and is already missed by all who knew her.

She was a very happy, loving person who always had a smile on her face.

There wasn't anything she wouldn't do for you.

Some of Betty's favorite things to do were to cook, sew, and take care of her pets.

She worked at several restaurants throughout her life and one of the last things she did on the night she passed away was to bake her family pies.

Betty is survived by two daughters, Diane Harder and husband Jon of Whitefish, and Bernadine Swennes and husband Donald of Libby; five grandchildren: Kim Harder, Shelly Huntley and husband Doug, all of Kalispell, Kris Berke, Jeff Swennes and wife Laura, and Marty Swennes, all of Libby; eight great-grandchildren: Matthew, Brandon, Niki, Cassie, Melissa, Kyle, Michelle and Sara; one great-great-grandchild, Kaylee; and her beloved dog of 15 years, Paden.

Graveside services were held Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m. at Glacier Memorial Gardens.

Visitation was Friday, April 6, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Johnson Mortuary Chapel.

Arrangements were under the direction of Johnson Mortuary & Crematory.

Howard O. Carpenter

Howard O. Carpenter, 80, passed away April 7, 2001, at the Brendan House in Kalispell.

He was born on Oct. 13, 1920, in Rosemont, W. Va., one of six sons born to John and Rosabelle Carpenter.

His father worked in the coal mines of West Virginia. The family moved to Longmont and later to Clarksburg.

When he was 10, his father passed away and his mother raised the boys.

She passed away in 1944 while Howard was in the U.S. Army.

He joined the W. Va. National Guard in 1939.

The National Guard unit went into active duty in January 1941.

He served the Army in both the Pacific and European Theaters of WW II in the 274th infantry as a rifleman specialist.

During his service, he received the American Defense Service Medal and two bronze stars.

He was honorably discharged in October 1945.

During his service for the U.S. Army, he met Bette L. Kingston at a USO dance in Seattle, Wash. in 1944.

He married Bette on Jan. 27, 1947. Two children were born to this union.

After his marriage, he worked in Billings at various jobs until hired by the United States Postal Service.

Shortly afterwards, he went to work on the railroad as a railway mail clerk

The family moved to Shelby and resided for five years before moving to Whitefish.

When the railway division of the post office was discontinued, he went to work at the Kalispell Post office until his retirement in 1979.

Howard was a member of the Whitefish Church of the Nazarene where he spent many hours of service as Sunday school secretary and in the construction of the new church building in 1970.

One of his greatest joys was transporting the young people of the church to youth camp each summer and working as one of the camp cooks during the late '60s and '70s.

In the late 1970s, he and his wife, Bette, organized the first Good Sam Club in Whitefish.

He and his wife spent a number of years in leadership with the Good Sams, traveling to Good Sam Jambories and enjoying their retirement years fishing in Puget Sound and the Oregon coast.

His greatest joy was his family and the care he gave to them will be missed by them all.

His devotion to his first wife during her long illness was a great example to his children of his love and care to his family.

His wife preceded him in death in 1994.

Subsequent to her death, he moved to Lewiston, Idaho and remarried .

While living in Lewiston, he joined the VFW and enjoyed the warmer climate until his fight with cancer became too much.

He moved back to Kalispell to be with his children and grandchildren in the final months of his life.

Howard was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents; and all five of his brothers.

He is survived by his widow, Bella, in Lewiston, Idaho; his daughter, Ava R. Walters and her husband Gerald in Kalispell; and son John Arlen Carpenter and wife Sandra in Whitefish; grandchildren, Kara Lee Hull and her husband Norman of Mesa, Arizona, Casey Walters of Kalispell, Rachel Lyn Carpenter and her fiance Malcolm Wilson of Kalispell, Christopher Paul Carpenter of Chinook, Brian Douglas Carpenter and his wife Jaime of Murray, Kentucky, and John Arlen Carpenter, Jr. and Kimberly Kay Carpenter at their family home in Whitefish.

He was a servant of the Lord and we celebrate his homegoing to his heavenly home with Jesus Christ during this glorious Easter season.

Funeral services will be on Good Friday, 11 a.m., at the Whitefish Church of the Nazarene with a reception lunch at the church following the interment at Glacier Memorial Gardens with military honors.

The services are under the auspices of the Austin Funeral Home.

Pastor Ronald L. Meyers of the Columbia Falls Church of the Nazarene is in charge of the services along with the assistance of Pastor James E. Huff of the Bible Presbyterian Church.

Memorials are suggested to the Whitefish Church of the Nazarene, Columbia Falls Church of the Nazarene, or the Bible Presbyterian Church in Kalispell.

Charles F. Bowers

Charles F. Bowers, 92, a Whitefish resident passed away April 8, 2001, at the Colonial Manor in Whitefish of natural causes.

He was born July 11, 1908, in Wyville, Wisconsin, the son of Frederick and Anna Bowers.

Charles was raised in Monroe, Wisconsin, left home when he was 14, and worked at odd jobs.

He met and married Gladys Husnik in October 1930 in Minnesota and they settled in Anoka, Minnesota where they raised three children.

Charles worked as a foundry worker in an iron and steel foundry until his retirement when they moved to Denver, Colorado.

Following the death of his wife, he came to the Colonial Manor in Whitefish in 1985.

Charles enjoyed fishing and telling stories to his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife Gladys in 1979; a grandson Bobby in 1983, and a daughter Edith in 1993.

He is survived by daughter Jean Glover (Larry) in Kila; son Kenny Bowers in Colorado Springs, Colorado; granddaughter Wendy Maechtle in Columbia Falls; 14 other grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.

Services will be later in Colorado.

Earl Weed

Earl E. Weed, 66, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 25, 2000, Jesus' birthday.

He was born June 12, 1934, in Kalispell to Earl S. and Evelyn (Klabo) Weed.

Earl and his brother, Kenneth Weed, were inseparable.

They went to grade school and Flathead High School together.

They were very active in many different fields, like National Guard, and sports.

They both worked together at Plum Creek for 44 years.

Earl met Lynn McKinley in 1968 and on June 12, 1969, they wed.

This was a very joyous and wonderful thing but also a challenging time.

Earl had three children from a previous marriage and Lynn had four children from a previous marriage.

The reason why this was a very joyous and wonderful time is because of all the love that grew from this marriage.

Earl was a very loving and caring family-oriented man and loving father to all seven children, and a great friend to many.

He loved with all his heart and would help all.

With having so many children, there was a roving door at the home for all his kids' friends.

Lynn was the apple of Earl's eye and she was his dearest love.

Earl loved to go fishing and camping and have wonderful family get togethers.

In December 1998, Earl retired from Plum Creek and he and Lynn traveled the state of Montana.

His family and friends will miss him dearly.

Earl will be gravely missed by all because of his love for all.

Earl is preceded in death by his father and mother, Earl S. and Evelyn Weed; sister Karen (Weed) O'Hare; step-sister, Lucille Dickenson; and step-mother, Selma Weed.

Earl is survived by his wife, Lynn Weed of Kalispell; children: La Dawn G. and husband Donald Black of Missoula; Daniel and wife Debbie Weed of Polson; Randy and wife Patti Weed of Columbia Falls; Lorna and husband Steve Avery of Post Falls, Idaho; Della Davis of Newman Lake, Wash.; Danene and husband Bob Thornton of Spokane, Wash.; and Kari and Shawn Hollopeter of Creston; brother Kenneth and wife Patricia Weed of Whitefish; step-sisters: Lois Frances and husband Woody of Lincoln, and Barbara Eystad and husband Jim of Kalispell; 18 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Also, all of his Plum Creek Family.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Mortuary with Pastor Ron Pierce officiating.

Burial will follow at the Glacier Memorial Gardens. Visitation was held Wednesday, Dec. 27, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Johnson Mortuary.

The family suggests memorial gifts be given to Home Options/Hospice, 175 Commons Loop, Ste. 100, Kalispell, MT 59901.

Arrangements were under the direction of Johnson Mortuary & Crematory.

Esther Sullivan

Esther Sullivan was united with her heavenly father on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, two days before the birth of his son, Jesus Christ.

She was 92 years old.

Since March 1997, she was a resident of Colonial Manor in Whitefish.

She is grateful for the loving care that she received from the staff at Colonial Manor.

Esther was born in Glencoe, Minn., to Gerald and Emma Stuedemann on Mary 31, 1908.

After graduation from high school, she moved to Minneapolis where she eventually met and married Joseph Sullivan (Solomon) on Aug.21, 1934. This was during the depression years and life was very difficult.

Eventually Esther found how to utilize her wonderful people skills as a waitress.

In the 1940s Esther went to work for the Brodahl Family at Brodahl's Cafe & Hotel on Cedar Avenue in Minneapolis.

In 1955, the Brodahl family retired and give the business to Esther in recognition of her many years of loyal service.

Esther and her husband Joe operated Brodahl's Cafe & Hotel until 1967 when he became ill.

The restaurant was famous throughout the upper midwest for their wonderful lutefisk and Scandinavian dishes.

They had many loyal customers. On Nov. 25, 1969, Joseph joined his heavenly father.

In 1972, Esther moved to Great Falls to be close to her son; she returned to Minneapolis in 1974 when he was transferred back to Minnesota.

In 1981, she moved to Whitefish to again be close to her son and his family.

She resided at the Whitefish Manor.

In the spring of 1989, she was diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer's. She attended St. Charles Church in Whitefish and had many friends at Whitefish Manor.

Esther is survived by her son Patrick and his wife Sandra of Whitefish and their children Kris Ann Carlsen and her husband Brian of Alexandria, Minn., and Patrick (Rick) Sullivan II and his wife Judi of Kalispell; five great-grandchildren: Eric Carlsen, Anna Carlsen, Karina Carlsen, Emily Sullivan and Natalie Sullivan; two sisters: Beatrice Radtke of Minnetonka, Minn. and her family, and Bernice Van Orden of Glencoe and her family; and sister-in-law June Stuedemann of Henderson, Minn. and her family.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband, sisters Margaret, Leena, and Gertrude, and brother Delford.

Arrangements were being handled by Bradshaw McDivitt Hogue Funeral Home in Minneapolis, Minn. and Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Dec. 30, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Internment will be at St. Mary's cemetery in Minneapolis where she will join her beloved husband Joseph.

Evelyn Carter

Evelyn L. Carter, 981, a longtime resident of South Carolina, passed away Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at the Colonial Manor nursing home in Whitefish of natural causes.

She was born in rural South Carolina on Nov. 21, 1909, the daughter of Nelson J. and Minta (Tomlinson) Broach.

Evelyn had been a seamstress and lived and worked in South Carolina until ill health brought her to Montana to be near her daughter, Pauline.

She is survived by her daughter, Pauline Van Slyke and husband, Gerald of Whitefish; a granddaughter, Susan Van Slyke and her two daughters, all of Whitefish; and a grandson, Gerald Jr. of Anaconda, and his two daughters.

No local services are planned.

Inurnment will take place in the spring in South Carolina.

Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish is in charge of arrangements.
