NORMA CATHERINE LAMPI
RED LODGE - Norma Catherine Lampi, 75, passed away Nov. 21, 2005 at St.Vincent Healthcare, with her sisters and niece, Debra Tomicich, by her side.
Norma was the youngest of eight children born to Svanti and Selma Hakala Lampi. She was born on April 8, 1930 near Roberts. She attended school in Roberts and graduated from Roberts High School in 1951.
Norma loved her animal pets and she had many in her lifetime. Her sisters recall the days on their farm when Norma was a delightful little girl and they had a big rooster who attacked everyone if they walked where he could see them; however, he left Norma alone. She would clap her hands and say, “Go away, old Mr. Rooster,” and he always ran away from her. Norma was a little clown who kept her family in stitches with her antics. She could carry a tune and would sing “Springtime in the Rockies” with a big smile on her face.
She enjoyed her beloved “Redskins,” the sports teams of Red Lodge High School. Norma attended almost every game at home and many on the road. She was their most devout fan and they in turn loved her too. The school gave her a sports jacket that she wore with pride. Dr. Terry said at the hospital that he would remember Norma whenever Red Lodge won a game and would say, “Way to go, Norma.”
Norma was in the hospital only a few hours, but the staff treated her with such kindness. Our thanks go to Sister Monica, the chaplain, for her caring and prayers, and to Mary, her nurse, who attended to Norma’s needs with such care and compassion. Dr. Terry was with Norma during her last minutes and referred to her sisters as the “Mean One” and the “Young One.” Norma would have enjoyed hearing them referenced in this way.
Norma was a devout Lutheran and attended church very regularly. In earlier years she helped with Sunday School and the children loved her. Norma enjoyed needlework, working crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She was a whiz at putting jigsaw puzzles together and the harder the better.
Our thanks also go to the staff at Cedar Wood Villa where Norma lived for the last few months. Everyone there was kind to her and gave her loving care.
Norma is survived by her sisters, Mildred Kansala and Elsie Normile, both of Red Lodge; and her dog, Blondie, as well as several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; her brothers, Emil, Hugo, and Leonard Lampi; and her sisters, Melba Marshall and Helen Werholz.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Red Lodge. Cremation has taken place. Interment will be in the Roberts Cemetery at a later date. If you desire, memorials may be given in Norma’s name to a charity of your choice. Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge is in charge of arrangements.
