George Clark
1918 - 2009
George Bradley Clark, 91, of Geraldine died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, in Missoula from complications of Alzheimer's disease. A memorial service will be held in the spring in Geraldine.
George was born on Feb. 22, 1918, in Sapulpa, OK to Wallace Bradley and Anna Brewer Clark.
George married Helen Gordon on Oct 30, 1939. They began a lifelong adventure of travel by moving to Alaska searching for work in a post depression country. George often spoke of the experience of riding the rails looking for work for two years in the "lower 48" and then being offered three jobs on the first day after arriving by ship in Seward, Alaska.
George and Helen moved to Geraldine to begin wheat ranching in 1943. George loved that farm. Even in the depth of Alzheimer's disease, he could recognize the pictures of his farm site enlarged and placed around his room. In 1955 the family moved to West Yellowstone. They maintained their residence there for nearly 50 years.
George did not go to the University of Wyoming where he had earned a scholarship in 1937 because "the old man wouldn't let me take my car." However; he and Helen left a legacy through their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of the importance of education and hard work. He was an impressive force in all their lives. They all recognize the values and the love of education he helped to develop. He'd pull up a chair and state, "Tell me what the schools are teaching you these days," and with that preamble would start the debate about history, science, social movements, math, or politics.
George was a Master Mason and a member of Eastern Star in West Yellowstone. He and Helen were among the first Westerners into China after it was opened to the world. They explored Mayan ruins in Mexico flying into the jungles by chartered small planes. The travel slowed after Helen's death. George returned early from the Andes in South America explaining that the adventure was lessened without Helen to share it.
George was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Gordon Clark, in 1987; second wife, Lois Hayes Clark, in 2000.
Survivors include daughters Sharee (Kenneth) Ballinger of Missoula, Mont., and Sandra Erickson (wife of Lynn Baker) of Great Falls, Mont.; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 3010 11th Ave N. Billings, MT 59101. (406) 252-3053.
