Joan E. Janke
WEST YELLOWSTONE -- Mrs. Joan E. Janke, 76, of Geyser Street in West Yellowstone, Mont., formerly of Fredonia, Wis., passed away at her residence early Friday morning, Oct. 29, 2010.
Joan was born in Saukville, Wis., on March 29, 1934, daughter of Henry and Lucille Glaeser Tesker. After her schooling, she was united in marriage with James Horn. Later, she remarried to Edward Janke. He preceded her in death in 1998.

In 2000 she moved to Montana to be closer to her children.
Joan had always loved the people and customers she dealt with at Teskers, and had many fond memories of them. While in her home in Fredonia, Mrs. Janke had always enjoyed keeping her yard neat and trim.
She and Eddy liked traveling, and had gone to many different areas in the country. Joan also enjoyed shopping and an occasional trip to the horse races.
She is survived by her children, James T. (Sandy) Horn of Butte, Mont., and Jacqueline (Dennis) LaFever of West Yellowstone, Mont. She is further survived by her sister Rosemarie (the late Paul T.) The family suggests any memorials be made to local hospice organizations.

Thad Vreeland, Jr.
SAN GABRIEL, Calif. -- Thad Vreeland Jr., emeritus professor of materials science at the California Institute of Technology, passed away Aug. 9 in San Gabriel, Calif. He was 85 years old.
Best known for his studies of the mechanical properties of materials, he collaborated with a variety of corporations and research institutions. He also coauthored The Analysis of Stress and Deformation with the late George Housner.
Vreeland received his BS from Caltech in 1949 and his PhD in 1952, joining the faculty as a research fellow that same year. He advanced to assistant professor in 1954, associate professor in 1958, and professor in 1968, and was named emeritus in 1991.
In the 1960s and 1970s Vreeland performed challenging experiments to measure how fast dislocations move in metal crystals; in the 1980s, he studied how defects in thin layers of semiconductor materials are generated by ion bombardment or stresses.
Vreeland's work in the 1990s included studies of how powders can be consolidated into bulk materials by subjecting them to strong mechanical shocks.
"Thad Vreeland took pride in laboratory technique and had both skill and style in building his own equipment, often frugally," colleague Brent Fultz said. "With the University of Pennsylvania's David Pope -- then a Caltech graduate student -- Vreeland designed and built several x-ray diffractometers of unique design. Tad Vreeland's shock wave consolidation facility used the barrel of a field gun that he reinforced for even higher velocities."
Thad was a great scientist and he interacted well with various researchers and engineers across campus, particularly with the solid mechanics group associated with both aeronautics and mechanical engineering, according to Ares Rosakis, the Theodore von Karman Professor of Aeronautics, professor of mechanical engineering, and chair of the Division of Engineering and Applied Science.
Vreeland was born in 1924, and was a lifelong member of the Caltech community.
After retiring, Vreeland spent much time at the Montana home he had mostly designed himself, and was often joined by Caltech faculty and students for fishing.
Vreeland is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Michael, Terry, and Janet; and two grandchildren, Theresa and Johanna.
