RANDY S. ALLISON
POLSON -- Randy "Rusty" Sherman Allison, 21, of Polson, died on Aug. 9, 2002, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident near Big Arm. Rusty was born April 25, 1981, in Ronan to Gary and Shirley (Wagner) Allison. He attended school in Polson and in Kalispell. He enjoyed 4 by-4 mudding, hunting, fishing, camping and mechanics. Preceding him in death were his grandfather, Tim Tiffany; grandmother, Jennie Miller Allison; and great-grandfather, Leon "Shorty" Miller. He is survived by his parents; a sister, Melissa S. Allison; and his grandfather, Sherman Allison (all of Polson); and his grandmother, Irene Tiffany (Kalispell). Memorial services: Aug. 15 in Polson. Cremation has taken place.

ALAN M. ANDERSON
POLSON -- Alan M. Anderson, 72, died of cancer here on Aug. 28, 2002. Alan was born on Jan. 16, 1930, in Anaconda, the son of Phyllis and Art Anderson. He attended local schools there, graduating from St. Peter's High School. After high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Following his discharge he was recalled and served two combat tours in Korea. After the war Alan returned to Anaconda to work as a painter, pipe fitter and mechanic. He also worked in Missoula. He retired to Polson in 1992. Alan enjoyed gardening, carpentry, woodworking and spending time with his grandkids. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Warren, Don and Keith. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, whom he married in 1973; daughters Sally Wiggins, Tammy Nieto, Ellen Almaguer, Nancy Watson, Patty Knight, Kathy Pleasant and Sue Marshall; sons Mark Anderson, LeRoy Lafrinire, Lou Lafrinire and Kevin Anderson; 26 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Aug. 30 in Polson. Cremation followed.

ROY E. ANDERSON
POLSON -- Roy Elmore Anderson, 78, of Polson, died on May 1, 2002, at the Veterans Home in Columbia Falls. He was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Miles City to Anders and Mathilda Anderson. He attended schools in Miles City and graduated from Custer County High School in 1942. He was honorably discharged in 1945. After the war, Roy enrolled in a photography school in Chicago, where he met Muriel McArthur; they were married in 1946. They moved to Missoula, where they owned and worked in a photography studio. Roy also worked for the Fuller Brush Co. and enjoyed fishing, bowling, boating and playing cards. Survivors include his three adopted daughters, Carol Merwin (Liverpool, CA), Brenda (Rodney) Norris (Kalispell), and Susan Lynn (Spokane); five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; his brothers, Art Anderson (Portland, OR), and Andrew Carmen (Johanna) Anderson (Billings); and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his sister, Pearl Herndon and his brother, Manford Anderson. Cremation has taken place and at his request, no formal service will be held. Memorials may be sent to the American Lung Association, Box 5598, Helena, MT 59604; the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, 1732 S. 72nd St. W., Billings, MT 59106; or a charity of choice.

STEVEN A. ANDREWS
HOT SPRINGS -- Steven Albert Andrews, 81, died here on Feb. 11, 2002. He was born on Nov. 15, 1920, in Lonepine, the son of Harry and Leota Andrews. He is survived by his wife, Betty (at the family home in Hot Springs); two sons and their spouses, Steve Jr. and Donna (Kalispell), and Randal "Boss" and Linda (Hot Springs); four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Sweeney (Lonepine); and several nieces and nephews. Military graveside services were Feb. 16 in Lonepine.

MARY ANDREW-SHERWOOD
ST. IGNATIUS -- Mary Agnes Andrew-Sherwood, 72, died on Jan. 2 at her home here. Mary was born Dec. 22, 1929, in St. Ignatius to Paul and Mary (Cullooyah) Andrew. Raised on the Flathead Reservation, she attended school at the Ursulines in Mission before starting her family with Hy Nick; they had two children. She then married Dan Sherwood, Sr., and they had a large family. Mary was a dedicated mother and wife who enjoyed attending powwows and going to pick huckleberries. She also loved to go on rides to the mountains and other places and taking in a picnic. She returned to the Mission Valley in the late '60s and later married John Ignace. Mary was preceded in death by her husbands, Dan and John; her parents; and her children, Mose, Donald, Marianne, Tommy, Arnold and Rose Ellen. Survivors include two brothers, Frank Andrew (Camas Prairie) and Peter Andrew (Sheridan, WY); a sister, Louise Andrew (Ronan); seven children -- two sons and their spouses, Francis and Dorothy Sherwood (Dixon), and Dan and Millie (Woodcock) Sherwood, Jr. (St. Ignatius); five daughters, Clara Rossbach (Dixon), and Nancy, Julie, Sue and Agnes Sherwood (all of St. Ignatius); 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Traditional wake services began Jan. 2 at the family home. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Jan. 4 at the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission in St. Ignatius; interment followed in the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Michael Matt, Arnie Sherwood, Cavey Rossbach, Eli Sherwood, Levi Sherwood, Duran Sherwood, Junior Sherwood, and Kean McCrea. Honorary bearers were Lou Martin, Nellie Potter, Robert Sherwood, Helen Sherwood, Alice Ignace, Andy Woodcock, Bob Woodcock, Sophie Haynes, Danny Abrahamson, Francis Cullooyah, Stan Bluff, Buela Bluff, and many other friends.

HOWARD ARLINT
PABLO -- Howard Ivan Arlint, 83, died at his home here on Sept. 2l, 2002. Howard was born Jan. 14, 1919, in Norquay, Saskatchewan, Canada, to William and Hazel Arlint. He attended schools in Missoula and Ronan, graduating from Ronan High School in 1939. He married Evelyn "Ruth" Lockwood on June 4, 1941. Howard started work at Sterlings in Ronan while a high school student. He continued working in the grocery business by buying his own store in Pablo in 1954 and operating it until 1975 when he retired. He was instrumental in founding the Pablo Christian Church and was very active in the community, serving with the fire department and water system, the Ronan School Board and the St. Luke Hospital Board. He loved to follow his kids and grandkids in all their activities. He was preceded in death by his sister Mildred and a grandson. He is survived by his wife of 61 years; eight children and their spouses: Frank and Jan Arlint (Pablo), Bonnie and Dennis Abbey (Pablo), Thomas and Cee (Springfield, OR), Charles (St. Ignatius), Rod and Rita (St. Ignatius), Rebecca and Les Lundeen (Polson), Debra and Kris Klein (Polson), and Nancy and Kelvin Jones (Grayson, KY); 33 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a brother, Allen (Kalispell); and two sisters, Marie Decker and Elizabeth Reum (both of Ronan). Services were held on Sept. 26 at the Pablo Christian Church. Burial followed at Ronan Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Pablo Christian Church.

ROSEMARY ARNDT
MISSOULA -- Rosemary Arndt, 72, died on May 27 here. Rosemary was born Nov. 14, 1929, in Spirit Lake, ID, the daughter of Ben and Geneive (Holland) Gross. Her early years were spent in Spokane before the family moved to Polson, where she went to school. She graduated from Hellgate High School in Missoula in 1947. She was to married Willard Arndt; they later separated. She made her home in Missoula and only recently had moved in with her daughter. Rosemary enjoyed being around her children and grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Angelo; and a granddaughter, Christine Lozeau. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Judy (Pablo); Mike and Audrey Arndt (Missoula); Dave and Kim Arndt (Florence); and Darla and Scotty SleepingBear (Missoula); a brother, James Gross (Las Vegas); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Graveside services were June 1 in the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.

JUNE ASHLEY
PABLO -- June Marie Roullier Ashley died on Aug. 1, 2002, after suffering a fatal heart attack following surgery. June was born June 8, 1924, to Henery and Janie Roullier in St. Ignatius. She attended schools in St. Ignatius and Ronan. She was a member of the Conf. Salish-Kootenai Tribes. She lived most of her younger years in the Mission Valley except for a short period spent in Toppenish, WA, with her sisters where she worked at various jobs. June married Archie "Art" Ashley, in Pasco, WA, on Nov. 27, 1941. Then they moved to Hermiston, OR. After the war they moved back to the Ashley home place in Pablo. June always had a yard full of flowers, and was a lady of strong faith. Before her health started to fail she always looked forward to the fall season so she could harvest Christmas trees. June was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 51 years; brothers Henry, Frank and Albert Roullier (all of Spokane); sisters Julia Munzanreder and Valerie Matt; and a grandson. She is survived by son Bill Ashley and his wife, Lois; her daughter, June Skaggs; baby sister Pearl Ashley (Mud Lake Trail); six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services and burial were Aug. 6 in Ronan.

M. JUNE ASK
POLSON -- M. June Ask, formerly of Missoula and Forsyth, died from natural causes on Feb. 22, 2002, at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center here. She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by a sister, Caroline Reed (Visalia, CA); a brother, Thomas M. Ask (Polson); and five nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on March 1 in Forsyth, with burial at the Forsyth Cemetery.

JACOB AYCOCK
HOT SPRINGS -- Jacob Warren Aycock, 88, of Hot Springs, died on Aug. 10, 2002, from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle accident near Ronan. He was born May 31, 1914, in Ada, OK, the son of Vester and Bessie Pharis Aycock. Warren was an ironworker and boilermaker for 36 years, the last 17 as business agent for Western Montana Ironworkers Local No. 598. He was a member of the District Ironworkers Council and a trustee for the Ironworkers Pension Fund for Montana, Arkansas, Washington, Oregon and Idaho. On Aug. 3, 1968, he married Ellen Dolson. For the next few years, the couple lived in various towns where Warren's work took them. In 1976 he retired and they settled at the Markle Ranch at Hot Springs. Warren was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and two brothers. He is survived by two nephews, Richard and Donald Aycock (both of California); numerous cousins; and two stepsons, Don Andrews (Ronan) and Cork Andrews (Kalispell). Graveside services: Aug. 16 in Hot Springs.

LILA BAILEY
RONAN -- Lila L. Bailey, 64, died on Feb. 18, 2002, at her sister Dorothy's home in Pablo from a cancer-related illness. She was born Sept. 1, 1937, in St. Ignatius, the daughter of Ernest "Pat" Bisson and Lillian Matt. Lila attended school in St. Ignatius and spent her youth in the Mission Valley. As an adult, she lived in the Mission Valley, with short periods spent in north Idaho. Her hobbies included doing puzzles, watching TV and going to rummage sales. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Marlene; her brothers Leonard, Douglas, Donald and Reno; and a son. Richard. She is survived by her sisters Dorothy and Vivian; brother Alvin; sons Pat, Leonard, William, David, John, Ronald, Ernest and Scott; daughter Catherine; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Feb. 21 in Ronan. A graveside service followed in Polson. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 3914, Missoula, MT 59806.

THOMAS P. BAIN
ST. IGNATIUS -- Thomas P. Bain, 79, died on Jan. 2, 2002, at St. Luke's Extended Care in Ronan. He was born to James and Marion (McLean) Bain in Somers on June 30, 1922. He met his future wife, Ayleen Schliep, through the Sweetheart Magazine in 1989. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vi, in 1988; an adopted son; and a sister, Agnes Murray. He is survived by his wife, Ayleen (at the family home in St. Ignatius); stepsons and spouses Leland (Cathy) Schliep (Billings), Glenn (Vicki) Schliep (St. Francis, KS), and Gordon (Joyce) Schliep (St. Ignatius); two brothers, Don Bain (Kalispell) and Bill (Pam) Bain (Columbia Falls); a brother-in-law, Art Murray (CA); seven step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service was held on Jan. 5 in St. Ignatius. Inurnment followed in St. Ignatius. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church or to the St. Ignatius Senior Center.

CAROLINE D. BAKER
LAUREL -- Caroline D. Baker, 43, died on Oct. 10, 2001. Caroline was born June 12, 1958, in Forsyth, the daughter of Cipriano Banderas of Miles City. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eva Banderas. She is survived by her husband and best friend, Blaine Baker (Laurel); four sisters, Martina Pieper (Dixon), Celia Labbe (Belle Fourche, S.D.), Delfina Ailport (Polson) and Gloria Banderas (Miles City); one brother, David Banderas (Missoula); and numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins. Cremation has been held. A memorial service was held on Oct. 20 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Billings.

JESSILYN M. BALTZ
PABLO -- Jessilyn Michelle Baltz, 24-day-old daughter of Amanda Baltz of Pablo, died Feb. 27, 2002, at Children's Hospital in Seattle after multiple medical complications. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her maternal grandparents Kay and Roy Baltz (Pablo); maternal great-grandmother Irene Tiffany (Polson); and numerous other relatives. Funeral services and burial were March 6 in Polson.

JAMES A. BARBER
RONAN -- James A. Barber, 62, of Tucson, AZ, died from cancer on April 4, 2002, at the family home.

Jim was born in St. Ignatius on May 21, 1939, to Emanuel and Ruby Barber.

During his college days in Dillon, he worked as a smokejumper for the Forest Service. Although he studied to be a teacher/coach, he joined the Army after graduation, after which he was recruited by the CIA.

In 1965, he and Judy Hefty were married, and the first years of their marriage were spent overseas. Later he went to work for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The last 10 years of his career were spent as superintendent at Tohono O'Odham Nation in Sells, AZ.

Jim retired at 55 and spent many days doing what he loved most: golfing and putzing around the back yard.

On Jan. 31, he was diagnosed with cancer.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Judy; daughter, Britt; son, Matt; granddaughter, Annika Hart Sutherland; son by marriage, Dan; brothers, Dick and wife Linda, Scott and wife Sharon, Sam and wife Charlene, and Tom; and sisters, Sherry and husband Joe, and Bea and husband Bob.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Barber.

Memorial services were April 22 in Ronan.

DANIEL BERT BAUMGARTNER
POLSON -- Daniel Bert Baumgartner, 82, of Polson, died of natural causes on Feb. 7, 2002, at the Fort Harrison Veterans Hospital. He was born June 2, 1919, in Ronan to George and Goldie (Pratt) Normandeau. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Leonard Baumgartner, and two brothers. He is survived by his former wife, Pearl Rose Baumgartner (Polson); his children, Priscilla Romero (Albuquerque, NM), Charles Baumgartner (Missoula), Sandra Martinez (Wichita Falls, TX), and Sheila Reum (Polson); 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Memorial services were Feb. 14 in Polson, followed by burial and military honors at Lakeview Cemetery.

RICHARD BEAR
MISSOULA -- Richard Neil Bear, 44, died on Sept. 15, 2001.

Rick was a private roofing contractor and worked throughout western and north-central Montana.

He enjoyed huckleberry picking, camping and fishing with his family, especially at Spotted Bear. He loved music and played the harmonica. He enjoyed telling stories about his brother, Alan Scott Bear, who died in 1980.

Rick was born on Nov. 19, 1956, at the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation Agency hospital. He is a member of the Medicine Bear Clan of the Assiniboine Tribes, with ancestors from Fort Belknap and Fort Peck Indian reservations.

He spent his youth along the Hi-Line from Bainville to Libby while his stepfather, Bruce, pursued a railroad career. He attended schools in Havre, Culbertson, Bainville, West Glacier, Columbia Falls and Libby.

Rick is survived by his wife, Althea LaMere Bear (Missoula); their children, Steven LaMere, Rhianna, Josie and Stormy; and grandsons Isiah and Uriah. He is also survived by his mother and stepfather, Mayble and Bruce Avery (Libby); two brothers, Bernard, and wife, Kim Azure, and family (Valley Creek); John Adams (Which Ever Way the Wind Blows, MT); and three sisters, Carmen, and husband, Mark Knapton, and family (Kalispell); Tammy and husband, Cole Anderson, and family (Troy); and Shannon and husband, David Cimino, and family (San Juan, Puerto Rico).

Also surviving are sisters-in-law from Box Elder: Peeps, Peanut, Jaunita, and Chine and husband, Joey Rosette; Tracy and husband, Tom Parisian (Polson); and Shelly and husband, Shawn Leonard (Missoula); as well as his LaMere extended family, which adopted him as a brother and friend.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Joe and Josephine Wakeman and Benny Bear; two cousins, George Cole and Teddy Hall; and his in-laws, Matthew and Viola LaMere.

Funeral services were Sept. 19 in Missoula. The cremains will be spread in Rick's favorite camping area in Spotted Bear as per his wishes.

FRIEDA H. BENSON
ST. IGNATIUS -- Frieda H. 'Ginger' Benson died on May 2, 2002, at Millpond Assisted Living facility here. She was born in Switzerland on March 8, 1910. Her family immigrated America in 1914. In her early teens, Frieda became an accomplished horsewoman, competing and trick riding, and doing branding and other jobs requiring skilled riding. In 1929, Frieda and Clair Benson were married. They lived in Stevensville, Missoula and Helena, where she designed, made and sold young children's clothing in a small shop out of their living quarters. Frieda also enjoyed playing music, painting, ceramics, making duck decoys, antique refurbishing, going to flea markets, quilting, beading, fishing and hunting. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Sofie and Gus Miller; a sister, Hulda, and brother, Gustaf. She is survived by her three daughters, Ruth Mahle (St. Ignatius), June (Bill) Beecher (Hamilton), and Darlene Allen (Tooele, UT); 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; as well as nephews and nieces, grand and great. Services were May 7 in St. Ignatius. Interment was at Pleasant View Cemetery.

ROBERT BICKEL
POLSON -- Robert Earl Bickel, 51, Polson, died on Sept. 16, 2001, of natural causes at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Nov. 27, 1949, in Anderson, IL, to Earl and Elizabeth Bickel. He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Van Camp (Florence, AL); two sisters, Jane Lee (Huntsville, AL) and Sue Villarreal (Fort Campbell, KY); and numerous other relatives. Graveside inurnment with military honors was Sept. 27 in Polson.

ALVIN E. BISSON, SR.
DALLAS -- Alvin E. Bisson, Sr., died here on Jan. 30, 2002. He was born in St. Ignatius on July 17, 1921, to Xavier and Mary (Tallman) Bisson. He is survived by his wife, Helen M. Bisson; three daughters, Molly A., Helena A., and Vivian L. (all of Dallas); and his sister, Bernice Sias (Ronan). Graveside services were held at Laurel Land in Dallas on Feb. 4.

MAE L. BLOMQUIST
POLSON -- Mae L. Blomquist, 85, died on Sept. 12, 2001, at her home here of natural causes. She was born May 2, 1916, in Lucas County, Wis., to Knute and Emma Lockrem. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, a brother and a grandson. Survivors include her husband, Vernon (Polson); two sons and their families, Fred Blomquist (White Bear Lake, Minn.), and Peter Blomquist (Spooner, Wis.); two daughters and their families, Marion Thornton and Faye Jensen (both of Polson); 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild. Memorial services were held Sept. 16 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Polson.
