ANNELLA DUMONTIER
HAMILTON -- Annella Leona (Dale) DuMontier, 98, died of natural causes Dec. 17, 2002, at the Valley View Nursing Home here. She was born Jan. 22, 1904, in Plains, daughter of Ben and Eva McNeeley. She went to school in Camas Prairie and lived in the area until marrying Isaac "Ike" Dale in 1922. They lived and worked in Thompson Falls, Martin Creek, Hot Springs, Polson, Seeley Lake and Missoula. Ike died in 1973. Annella married Albert DuMontier of Arlee in 1980, and they made their home in Missoula. She dearly loved fly-fishing on the creeks and rivers of western Montana and usually caught the most fish on family outings. She spent long hours cooking in logging camps and restaurants and also crocheted many afghans for friends and family. She was active in local hospitals, Daughters of the American Revolution, Odd Fellows, Welcoma Club, Arlee Senior Center, Moose, Eagles and Elks clubs and the Missoula Senior Center. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Butch McNeeley and Short McNeeley; her son, Lester "Bud" Dale; her grandson, David Dale; and her second husband, Albert DuMontier. She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Jameson (Hamilton); five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a niece. Memorial services were Dec. 28 in Missoula. REBECCA FOSTER
ST. IGNATIUS -- Rebecca Jean Menicucci-Foster, 38, died on Dec. 28, 2002, in Missoula, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. The second child of Louie and Belva (Pierce) Menicucci, she was born Jan. 24, 1964, in Anaconda, where her family lived. Raised and educated in there, Becky graduated from high school in 1982 and then went to beautician school in Butte before returning to Anaconda, where she ran a branch of the Old West Bakery for her family. In 1989, Becky met her future husband, Ralph Foster, at her bakery and gave up being the baker's daughter to be the mortician's wife, a mother, and a preschool teacher. In 1996, Becky and her family moved to St. Ignatius, where she opened her own preschool, Cuddlebugs, before going into the flower and gift shop business with her own shop, Stargazer Floral and Gifts, which she ran until cancer caused her to give it up in 2001. A unique and undying spirit, Becky was an avid collector of Barbie dolls and tiaras. She was preceded in death by a nephew, two uncles, an aunt and her grandparents. She leaves behind her husband Ralph Cary Foster and children Zachary Iian and Zane Aaron (all of St. Ignatius); her parents; her brother Louie Menicucci; sisters and brothers-in-law Dawn and Gary Chilcott, Kim and Dave Jones, Angie and Dirk Malmberg, Ginny and Jimmy Close and Susan and Jim Schimming (all of Deer Lodge), and DeeDee McCarthy (Phoenix); aunts and uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces and close friends. A wake was conducted in St. Ignatius. Services were held onJan. 2 a.m. at the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission. Memorials may be made to the Guardian Angels Cancer Fund, 2835 Fort Missoula Road, Building 3, Suite 301, Missoula, MT 59804; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

WALTER M. FOUTY
POLSON -- Walter M. Fouty, 79, of Polson, died on Dec. 3, 2002, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. Walt, the youngest of five children, was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Van Wert, OH, to Blanche and Glenn Fouty. Walt met his wife Gladys "Jo" Lozar in San Francisco during World War II while he was serving with the U.S. Marine Corps. Walt and Jo were married March 4, 1945. After Walt left the Marines, the couple moved to Montana, where Walt worked in the logging industry before moving on to heavy construction work and finally retiring. Walt was a devoted husband to his wife, Jo. He took care of her for 18 years as she suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. Jo and their son, David, preceded him in death. Walt is survived by two daughters, Jane Whiting (Big Arm) and Deborah Statham (Polson); two sons, Robert Fouty and Walter G. Fouty (both of Polson); eight grandchildren: Mike Fouty, Steve Fouty, Ann Vert, Asia Gray, Roth Fouty, Strohm Fouty, Kristen Statham and Steven Statham; and four great grandchildren. Walt was an outstanding athlete during high school years and a No. 1 local sports fan. In his younger years, he hunted and fished and enjoyed horse packing in the Mission Mountains. Later in life he took up golf and particularly liked taking his brother-in-law's money on the course. He was also involved with the senior citizen groups. A memorial service was held on Dec. 7 in Polson.

LELA MAE GRIFFIN
POLSON -- Lela Mae Griffin, 88, died on Dec. 25, 2002, at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center here from natural causes. Lela was born Sept. 12, 1914, in Prescott, WA, to Roy and Vera Phillips. She grew up and attended schools in Camas, WA, where she graduated from high school. Lela married Robert F. Griffin on July 28, 1934, in Stevenson, WA. She lived in Fern Prairie, WA, and later in Willard, WA. She and Robert moved to Missoula in 1942. Robert's job eventually took them to Whitehall, where they bought a ranch. They lived on the ranch until 1965. She and Robert traveled throughout the U.S. for several years and eventually retired to Polson in 1991. Lela's main love and interest was her family. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Robert "Chip" Griffin; and three sisters. She is survived by her son Roy Griffin (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and daughter Kathy Long and her husband Chris (Kansas City, MO).; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services were conducted at the Whitehall City Cemetery.

CARLA HARRINGTON
RONAN -- Carla Harrington, 85, of Ronan, died on Dec. 4, 2002, at Emanuel Legacy Hospital in Portland, OR. She was born Nov. 10, 1917, to Carl and Juliette Nelson in Dooley, MT. Raised in Plentywood, she later moved to the St. Ignatius area with her family. Carla enjoyed dancing and yodeling in her high school days. She was a contestant in the Miss Montana beauty pageant. After high school she attended college for two years in Dillon. In 1943 and 1944 she drove a bus for in Spokane. She married Earl Goss in 1944. They had two children. In 1951 she married Dennis "Jiggs" Harrington. She raised a grandson, Jerry, and enjoyed cooking and helping with all sport activities that her children were in. Carla worked in the potato industry, helped with the government census and later worked at the school as hot lunch supervisor. Carla and Jiggs owned racehorses and enjoyed going to horse races. She was preceded in death by her parents and both husbands. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Earlene Couture and Ed (Portland), Gary and Kathy Harrington (Ronan) and Jerry and Bobbi Johnson (Medical Lake, WA); numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister Alice Luoma (Ronan); brother Ervin Nelson (Green River, WY); and numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be announced at a later date. The family requests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

BILL HINES
POLSON -- Bill Eugene Hines, 56, of Polson, died on Dec. 18, 2002, in a motor vehicle accident near Clinton. He was born Oct. 18, 1946, in Lafayette, Ind., to James Curtis Hines and Vera May Suiters. A 1964 graduate of Brookston (Ind.) High School, Bill received a degree in aviation from Purdue Univ. in 1970 and a master's in business administration from the Univ. of Arkansas in 1977. He was an implement dealer and had served in the Indiana National Guard. Bill had lived in Montana for the past 12 years. Survivors include two daughters, Julie Ezell and husband Rich (Farmington, AR) and Sara Dawson and husband Doug (Lawrence, KS); his parents in Battle Ground, IN; brother Bob Hines (Brookston); sisters Betty Kitchel and husband Steven (Logansport, IN) and Barbara Dieterle and husband Ted (Lafayette); and three grandchildren. Services and burial were Dec. 24 in Brookston. Memorials may be made to the Dayton United Methodist Church.

LYDIA LONG
RONAN -- Lydia Long, 88, died on Dec. 19, 2002, at St. Luke's Extended Care here. Born on June 21, 1914, in Linton, N.D., and raised in North Dakota, she married Reid "Ray" Long later in life and they lived in Montana and North Dak. In the late '80s, Lydia moved to St. Ignatius after her husband died. She eventually moved to the St. Luke's Extended Care Center. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a son. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews from her husband's family. As she requested, cremation has taken place and no formal services are planned. At a later date, her cremated remains will be interred with her husband.

CHARLES CARUTHERS
RONAN -- Charles Eben "Charlie" Caruthers, 66, died on June 5, 2003, while surrounded by his adopted family here. Born to Tom and Ruth Caruthers in Ellsworth County, KS, on June 7, 1936, he was raised and educated in Genoseo, KS. Charlie served in the Korean War as a medic. He also ran several businesses and worked the oil rigs in the High Plains. He married twice and was preceded in death by both wives, his parents, brother Keith and sister Linda. Survivors include the following siblings and their spouses: Wayne and Shirley (Genoseo); Richard (Pratt, KS); Ruby Palmer (Linsburg, KS) and Martha Ann Foust (Chalevorix, MI); as well as a large adopted family on the Flathead Reservation. In accordance with Charlie's wishes cremation has taken place and a picnic to celebrate his memory will held on June 14 at his home on Crow Creek.

MILDRED HOSSLER
POLSON -- Mildred Hossler, 92, died on June 7, 2003, at St. Luke Extended Care in Ronan. She was born on July 8, 1910, in Swanville Township, MN. She was raised in Minnesota and moved to Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, and worked for the National Park Service, where she met George Lester Hossler, whom she married on Jan. 13, 1940, in Minneapolis. They moved to Seattle during World War II and later to Alaska. They moved to Polson in 1954. She and Les purchased the Polson Machine Shop and operated that business until 1971. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Polson. She and Les were active members of the Masonic Lodge and the Shrine. Mildred was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. She also was a very proud member of the Kitchen Band. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1997 and parents, Ellen Marie (Olson) Derx and L.A. Derx. She is survived by a cousin. A graveside service was conducted on June 10 at Lakeview Cemetery in Polson. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, P.O. Box 2472, Spokane, WA 99210-2472.

PAULINE HUGHES
POLSON -- Pauline Hughes, 88, died on June 4, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital here from natural causes. She was born on Jan. 17, 1915, in St. Charles, IA, to Frank and Agnes Conrin O'Leary. She moved to Danvers, MN, at an early age and attended school there. She graduated from Benson High School in Benson, MN. She married Lawrence Patrick Hughes on Dec. 9, 1935, in Danvers and they lived in Benson until 1947. They lived in various places before moving to Valley View near Polson. They farmed and ranched before retiring and moving into town. Pauline was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Edward Eugene Hughes; two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence (Polson); a daughter, JoAnn Emery (Williston, ND); three sons, Harold Patrick Hughes (Polson), Richard Anthony Hughes (Grand Rapids, IL) and Stephen Michael Hughes (Polson); 17 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on June 9 in Polson. Interment followed at Lakeview Cemetery in Polson.

VIOLA JOHNSON
POLSON -- Viola Marie Brown Johnson died on June 8, 2003, from injuries sustained in a traffic accident near Charlo. At the time of her death, she was a certified nursing assistant at the Polson Nursing Home. Viola's loves included her large extended family, especially the younger children, fishing and camping, attending powwows, making people laugh, her friends and special times with all. In her earlier years, Viola was an enrolled member of the Wind River Arapaho Tribe. She later became an enrolled member of the Conf. Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Viola is survived by her husband, Shane Johnson (Polson); her mother and stepfather, Myrna and Greg DuMontier (Valley Creek); her father, John P. Brown (Salt Lake City); her brother and his wife, Pascal and Andrea Adams and children Justin, Nadia and Halle (all of Arlee); and her stepsiblings Annie DuMontier, Kamiah (Anssi) DuMontier, Misty (Shade) Tanner and Robert ChiefStick (Toni Michel); her maternal grandfather Louis Adams; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Viola was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Nadine Adams, and great-great-grandmother Louise Vanderburg and her paternal grandparents Thomas and Martha Brown. A wake for Viola was conducted at the St. Ignatius Community Center. Funeral services were held on June 12 at the Longhouse in St. Ignatius, with burial following at the Adams Family Cemetery at Valley Creek.
