JEAN SITCH
MISSOULA -- Jean Sitch died at St. Patrick Hospital here on April 30, 2003, from lung cancer. She was born in St. Ignatius on Sept. 11, 1937, to Yvonne and James Silverthorne. Jean was raised and educated in the Flathead Valley. She married Peter D. Sitch on April 29, 1960. The couple moved to Lincoln in 1961 and raised their family there. Peter preceded her in death in 1984. Jean continued to reside in Lincoln until 1994, when she moved to Washington for a short time before making Polson her home. Jean enjoyed her pet dog, Nicki, a wide range of music, crossword puzzles and making a variety of crafts. Her family includes seven children and their spouses, David and Becky Sitch (Helena), Pam and Buddy Rangel (Thermopolis, WY), Tammy Sitch (Polson), Diana Burk and fiance Eric DeLano (Port Orchard, WA), Laurie and Shawn Mills (Hahnbach, Germany), Dennis and Shelley Sitch (Kelso, WA), and Pete and Jennifer Sitch (New Berlin, IL); 19 grandchildren; and a sister, Norma Martin (Polson). She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jim. Services were conducted on May 5 at the Lincoln Community Hall. Burial was at the Old Lincoln Cemetery. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Missoula Co. Cancer Assoc., 3005 Queen St., Missoula, MT 59801.

CATHERINE VERCAMMEN
POLSON -- Catherine Vercammen, 83, died here on April 6, 2003. Catherine Maud Brown on Aug. 5, 1919, in Hull, England. She married C.F. "Bus" Donaldson of Hamilton in England. Catherine and Bus had four children together: Stuart, Debby (who died in 1999), Charles and Catherine. Her husband preceded her in death in 1973. Catherine married Lee Vercammen on May 14, 1977. They were together for 25 years. Survivors include her husband, Lee (Polson); two sons and their spouses, Stuart and Judy Donaldson (Corvallis) and Charles and Cathy Donaldson (Hamilton); a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Bill Whiting (Polson); a stepson, Carlo Lee Vercammen (East Helena); 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; her brother, Michael Brown (England); and two sisters, Betty Maus (Denver) and Mourine Hudson (England). Catherine was a member of the Polson congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Funeral services were held April 11 in Hamilton. A graveside service followed at the Corvallis Cemetery.

JIMMIE WELCH
HOT SPRINGS -- Jimmie "Glen" Welch died on April 20, 2003, as the result of a motorcycle accident. He was born on Jan. 15, 1933, to John and Ione Welch. He graduated from Hot Springs High School. He served in the 101st Airborne Division. While in the service, he met and married Anne Lanier. They had two children, Jimmy and Joanne. Men of his character earn labels like "Bull of the Wood" as a logger, and he was known around the county for the straightest haystacks during his time as a rancher. Glen and his bride Dotsy lived every day to the fullest. They enjoyed rafting, camping and laughs in their abundant life together. He loved riding his Harley on a sunny day. Glen was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne; his parents; and a brother, John Welch Jr. He is survived by Dotsy, 11 children and 18 grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted on April 24 at the Lonepine Hall.

FLOYD WEST
RONAN -- Floyd David West died at his home here from a heart condition on April 23, 2003. He was well-known in the Ronan area as "The Sharpener" and as "Bacho" to his grandchildren. Floyd was born on June 14, 1918, to William J. and Jessie Vanzyverden West of Shaunavan, Saskatchewan. The family moved to Opportunity, WA, near Spokane, in 1921. After his father died, Floyd moved to Sidney to live with his sister, Naomi, and graduated from high school while there. He married his childhood sweetheart, Lenore Lincecum, on Nov. 2, 1940, in Tacoma, WA. The couple lived in several western states throughout the early years of their marriage and eventually settled in Walla Walla, WA, where Floyd was a correctional officer at the Washington State Penitentiary until his retirement. He and his wife also owned and operated an insurance business while there. After retirement, they moved to Redway, CA. They moved in 1992 to Ronan, where Floyd and Lenore were active participants in the Senior Center Bread Basket program and as ministers with Jehovah's Witnesses. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Frank West; and his sister, Jean Bradshaw. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lenore Lincecum West; his sons, Bill West (Ronan) and Wally West and wife Carol (Redway); two brothers, Kenneth West (Yuma, AZ) and Donald Claymon (Veradale, WA); his sister, Naomi Myhre, and husband her Bill (Sweet Home, OR); three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held on May 30 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in St. Ignatius. The family suggests memorials to Lake County Hospice.

FRANK WIEFERICH
ST. IGNATIUS -- Frank Wieferich, a rancher, died on April 27, 2003, of cancer. Frank was born in Townsend to Frank and Mary Katherine Wieferich in July 8, 1933. He, along with three brothers and ten sisters, was raised where the Canyon Ferry Dam currently is. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister. He is survived by three sons and four daughters and their spouses: Charlotte and Dale Freshour (St. Ignatius), Cheri and Miral Gamradt (Bozeman), Mike Wieferich (East Helena), Carol and Fran Cahoon (St. Ignatius), Kay and Rich Fladstol (Darby), Dave and Cathy Wieferich (Sidney) and Marc Wieferich (Maui, HI); two brothers; nine sisters; 14 grandchildren and eight grandchildren. Mass of Resurrection was celebrated on April 30 in the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission. Interment followed in the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.

DEMA WISSEMAN
POLSON -- Dema Mae Wisseman, 93, died here on April 24, 2003, from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton, and an infant son, also named Clayton. She is survived by her daughter, Velma Potter, and her husband, Donald (Mesa, AZ); two sons and their wives, Lavon and Denise Wisseman (Wickenburg, AZ) and Arlen and Miriam Wisseman (Polson); eight grandchildren and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services were held on April 29 in Mesa.

ROBERT F. WOMACK
RONAN -- Robert F. Womack, 80, died on April 30, 2003, at the St. Luke Extended Care Facility here of natural causes. Military graveside services were conducted on May 5 at the Ronan Cemetery.

WILLIAM ALEXANDER
POLSON -- William Russell Alexander, 80, of Polson, died on May 22, 2003, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nola; his parents; one son, Thomas Earl Alexander; and a grandson, Ryan Alexander. He is survived by his two sons and their wives, Russell Alexander (Williamson, NY) and Dale Alexander (Polson); nine grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Funeral services were held on May 29 in Polson. Graveside services with military honors followed at the Murray Memorial Cemetery, Lonepine. Memorial gifts are suggested to the First Baptist Church in Polson.

DORIS M. BLANCHARD
HOT SPRINGS -- Doris M. Blanchard, 85, died on May 9, 2003, at Evergreen Nursing Home here. She was born on April 1, 1918, in Wilder, ID, the daughter of Minnie and George Evins. Her family moved to Fort Shaw and eventually settled in the Eureka area, where she attended school with her 10 siblings. Doris married Ferris F. Blanchard in 1934. They were married for 44 years until his death in 1979. Doris was a member of the Hot Springs Senior Citizens Center and was named 2002 Senior of the Year. She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Dick and Germaine Blanchard (Hot Springs), Bob and Mel Blanchard (Lafayette, OR), Fred and Billie Blanchard (Portland, OR), and Bill and Delva Rae Blanchard (Bigfork); two brothers, George Evins and Dean Evins; one sister, Violet Shelby; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on May 12 at the First Church of God in Plains. Burial followed at Plains Cemetery.

J. RICHARD BORDEN
CHARLO -- John Richard "Dick" Borden died on May 4, 2003. He was born Dec. 8, 1916, to James Lucky and Maude Casey Borden in Niarada. He attended Battle Butte School until the eighth grade and then attended St. Ignatius High School. While in Mission, he lived with his grandmother, "Beel-ma," Mary Gillard McDonald, and Angus McDonald. In his teens, Rich herded sheep. On Dec. 24, 1936, Rich married Iris Mary Violette. They moved to the Flathead mine, where he worked as a miner and powder setter. When World War II started, Rich went to Portland and was employed in the shipyards. He returned to the Flathead mine and worked until 1945, when he purchased 40 acres near Dublin Gulch at D'Aste. He milked cows, raised cattle and wheat, expanding the ranch to over 200 acres. Rich was also instrumental in the volunteer renovation of the old Charlo gym in the early '60s. After Iris died in 1978, he sold the ranch and moved into Charlo. He married Betty Knudsen in June 1980. Betty raised her five children on the ranch right next to Rich's. Rich was a natural entertainer and storyteller who also enjoyed playing cards, the news of the day, hunting, fishing, picking huckleberries and prospecting for gold. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Rita Cochran; and brother Roy "Tim." His survivors include his wife, Betty (Charlo); two sisters, Amelia Gipe and her husband, Ralph (Polson) and Grace Thompson (Moses Lake, WA); son Rick and his wife, Mary (Hamilton); stepsons and spouses Rick and Sue Knudsen (Potomac), Dave and Mary Kay Knudsen (Kenai, AK), and Jim and Julie Knudsen (Newton, IA); stepdaughters and spouses Kathy Knudsen and Tom Deveny (Missoula) and Sheryl and Ron Kain (Charlo); 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial celebration and potluck was held on May 7 in Charlo. The family suggests memorials to the Leon Clubhouse, in care of Tammy Steindorf, Charlo, MT.
