MARY SMITH
THERMOPOLIS, Wyo. -- Mary R. "Mickie" Smith, former Ravalli and Lake county resident, died here on Nov. 14, 2004. Mickie was born in Belgrade on May 31, 1913, to George D. and Lillie B. (Gastineau) Ballard. She married Walter D. Smith on June 23, 1934, in Bozeman. The couple lived in eastern Montana until 1947, at which time they moved to the Bitterroot in the Skalkaho area. In 1961, they moved to Ronan and Charlo. Mickie worked as a licensed practical nurse for seven years in Ravalli and Lake counties and was a bookkeeper for the Ronan Co-Op and a bookkeeper/clerk for Charlo School District for five years. She spent five years on the baseball board of directors as a baseball commissioner in Ronan. She was instrumental in starting a Ronan baseball team for players over the age of 16. She also designed, set up a baseball field and had the grandstands moved to their present location. Walter and Mickie retired in 1975 and became "snowbirds." Mickie's first love was her kids, her own and any others who needed a warm spot or a love in their life. Other loves were baseball, traveling, crocheting and medicine. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in 1998; eldest son, Walter Niles; parents; a sister, Billie Wagner; three brothers, Forrest, Dudley and Jack Ballard; a granddaughter, Sandy Smith; and a great-granddaughter, Cassandra Smith. Mickie is survived by six sons and their spouses, Chuck Bequette (Lopez Island, WA), Bruce and Josie Smith (Glendive), Earl Smith (Butte), Ralph and Mardel Smith (Ronan), Cliff and Beth Smith (Grand Junction, CO), and Wayne Smith (Norwalk, CA); six daughters and their spouses, Pat DuMont, Sandy and Phil Scheffel and Sue Wilson (all of Thermopolis), Nancy Shepard (Charlo), Annette and Dean Sellars (Prague, OK), and Barbara and Chuck Cromer (Kalispell); 44 grandchildren; 88 great-grandchildren; and 26 great-great grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother and his wife, Tom and Sandy Ballard (Clancy); and two sisters, Juanita Armstrong (Cardwell) and Gussie Smith (Polson). Funeral services were conducted on Nov. 22 at the Whitesitt Funeral Home in Stevensville with burial in the Victor Cemetery.

DWAYNE VOLLIN
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Dwayne L. Vollin died here unexpectedly on Nov. 2, 2004. He was born in Swindon, England, on April 27, 1962, to Gloria and Phillip Vollin Jr. Dwayne honorably served in the U.S. ARmy from 1983 to 1994. While stationed at Fort Carson, he was a reserve officer for the Fountain Police Dept. A tribal member, he also served with Tribal Law and Order in Pablo from 1994 to 2002. He was working at an auto dealership at the time of his death. Dwayne loved his family and playing darts and basketball, and washing his car. He is survived by his children, Jason and Chantel Vollin (Fountain, CO), and Melissa Betancourt (Oklahoma); his mother, Gloria, and his stepfather, Leroy Bolin; siblings and their spouses: Debra and Steve Fauerso, Donna and Jerry Wisher, Diane Vollin, Darleen and Randy Shero (all of Kalispell), and Dennis Vollin (Burns, OR); and his close friend and former wife, Sandra Vollin. Services and burial were held on Nov. 9 in Kalispell.

ROBERT WIEDER
ARLEE -- Robert Alfred Wieder died on Nov. 1, 2004, at his home here. He was born on Jan. 6, 1917, in Missoula, to Edwin and Sena Sophia Wieder. He was raised on a ranch in the Potomac Valley. On Nov. 7, 1941, he enlisted in the Army. Throughout WWII, he served in the South Pacific. He was discharged in 1945. He returned to the ranch and worked with his father for a number of years. On June 12, 1952, he married Leone Jane Starks. They lived at the ranch in Potomac until January 1969. Then they lived in the Missoula area until he retired from the Missoula County Road Dept. They moved back to Arlee in 1979. He was best known for his love of his family, animals, gardening, visiting and telling stories that made people laugh. He loved to tease his family and tell jokes. Survivors include his wife, Leone; his children and their spouses, Artha (Jody) Malatare, Russell (Julie), Brad (Darcy) and Sharon Wieder (all of Arlee), Bryan (Roxeen), Lola (Dan) Skillman (Helena), Debra (Gary) Lucht (Missoula), and Melody (Ivan) Thompson (Idaho); 23 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; one brother; his daughter, Cynthia; and a great-grandson. Cremation has taken place.

SANDY ADAMS
ST. IGNATIUS -- Sandra Ann Matt Morigeau Adams, 55, died at her home here on June 25, 2004. She was born on Nov. 1, 1948, in St. Ignatius, to Isaac "Ike" Matt and Catherine Caltomee Saxa. She attended the Ursuline School. She finished her education in Nespelem before returning to Montana and later going to art school in Santa Fe. She worked at Two Eagle River School and in various tribal departments such as S&K Development and at the Char-Koosta News, before illness forced her to slow down. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and an uncle who helped raise her, Rose and John Saxa Sr., Louis and Rosalie Matt, and John Saxa; other uncles and aunties, Angie Matt Whitmore, Collette Matt Plouffe, Margaret Matt Vallee, Louie "Sonny" Matt, Casey Matt, Henry Matt, Elmer Matt, Basil "Uncle Bob" Matt, Peter Matt, Ignatius Saxa and Felician Saxa; her parents; and her mother-in-law, Helen. She leaves behind her husband, Dale Adams; her children: Jen (Dustin) Gatch, Lana (Chuck) Page and Mike (Dawna Jo) Morigeau; brothers Francis "Chief" (Brenda) Finley and Butch Finley; sisters Juanita "Deeda" (Neil) Adams and Sonia Chippewa; aunts Iva Saxa, Darlene Matt and Margaret Finley Matt; uncle Joseph "Joe" (Sophie) Matt; grandchildren Kyle, Winter, Tyler, Monty, Kobe, Logan, Jacob and Jaeleigh, and Zeke and Angus; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and adopted family; and her husband's family. Traditional wake services were conducted at the Longhouse. Funeral services were conducted in the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission on June 29, with interment following in the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.

ANDY ANDREW JR.
PABLO -- Andy Andrew Jr. died on June 11, 2004, at his home here. He was born on March 18, 1942, in St. Ignatius, to Andrew Andrew Sr. and Harriet Jane Beaverhead Andrew. Raised and educated on the Flathead Reservation, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. A member of the Conf. Salish and Kootenai Tribes, he worked for various tribal departments, but his true love always was working in the woods. He married Marian Michel on June 11, 2004. Preceding him in death were his parents, grandparents Pete and Josephine Beaverhead, sisters Diane and Gerry, brothers Max and Martin, and a stepchild, Christine Lozeau. He is survived by his wife, Marian; children and their families: Michael Jon (Angie) Irvine and grandchildren Erin, Tailyr and Michael; Susan Pierre and grandchildren Michael, Clayton, Jodessa, Josiah, Gail and great grandson BoJai; Renee Pierre and grandchildren Lenee, Payton, Lauren and Anton; Jami (Jim) Hamel and grandchildren Arisha, Mariah, Gerald and Malia; and Toni (Robert Chiefstick) Michel and grandchildren Tyra and Brayden. He is also survived by stepchildren Butch, Stacey and Laurie Lozeau; brother Dan (Enid) Andrew and their children, Billie Joe, Marion George and Eloise Curry; sisters Tina Andrew and Carole Ann Finley; as well as numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins. A traditional wake began on June 11. Wake closing was conducted on June 14 at the Longhouse, followed by the celebration of Mass of the Resurrection at the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission. Interment followed at the Andrew Family Cemetery on Mollman Pass Trail Road, where military honors were presented. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to "Feed My Lambs" in Ronan, in care of Larry and Ginger Pitts, 278 Mountain Vista Lane, Polson, MT 59860.

MARY B. BARTELL
POLSON -- Mary B. Bartell, 80, of Polson, died on June 23, 2004, at St. Luke Extended Care Facility in Ronan. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, two sisters and three brothers. She is survived by a niece, Claire S. Thoni, and a nephew, Frank G. Severs (both of Castro Valley, CA); and three stepchildren, Brenda Bartell (Portland, OR), Don Bartell (Coeur d'Alene, ID), and Tracy Bartell (Upland, CA). Memorials may be made to the Polson City Library. A graveside military honor service was conducted on June 25 at the Lakeview Cemetery, Polson.

EUGENE BEARDSLEY
POLSON -- Eugene G. Beardsley, 89, died on June 29, 2004, at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Polson. He was born on Nov. 2, 1914, in Wisconsin to Lewis and Lydia Beardsley. He married Florence Arnold on Feb. 28, 1939; they later divorced. He married Louise Anderson in February 1939; they later divorced. He was preceded in death by a son, Eugene M. Beardsley; a daughter, Helen M. Beardsley; two brothers and five sisters. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Clara M. Beardsley (Bigfork). A graveside funeral service was held on July 1 at the Lakeview Cemetery in Polson.

ALBERT CHARLO
RONAN -- Albert F. Charlo, 73, died on June 22, 2004, at Westside Care Center in Ronan. He was born to Antoine and Mary (Mitchell) Charlo, on Feb. 15, 1931, in St. Ignatius. He was raised on the Flathead Reservation and as a young man, he went to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad and built power lines. Albert married and had a family but later got divorced. He went on to receive his bachelor's degree from college but was always a bit of a wanderer and never stayed in touch as well as he should have. An accomplished writer, he was the publisher of a newsletter and wrote to many in his family. Just recently he had returned to Ronan to live. He was preceded in death by his parents; children Denita Charlo and Maria Beth Charlo; eight siblings, three of whom died as young children, as well as Louis, Charles, Genevieve "Jim", Gene, and Betsy Charlo. Survivors include his children Antoine "Gene" Charlo and Robin Charlo; brother and sisters Mary Jane Charlo, Carole Sorrell and Victor Charlo; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A traditional wake began June 24 at the Longhouse. Mass was celebrated on June 25 at the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission. nterment followed in the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.

RAMONA COUTURE
EVERETT, Wash. -- Ramona Victoria Couture, 75, died on June 26, 2004, from a long-term illness. She was born in St, Ignatius, to Albert and Victoria Couture, on Dec. 4, 1928. She attended Catholic schools in St. Ignatius, and Pierre, South Dakota. She also attended Business College in Anaheim, Calif., and the University of Montana. She later returned to the reservation and was a cook for Tribal Law and Order. She enjoyed playing bingo, and loved to travel, especially back to the reservation to attend powwows and spend time with family and friends. She was preceded in death by five brothers: Henry, Clarence, Merle, Emmett "Swede" and Eugene Couture; and three sisters: Viola Bryant, Hazel Ducharme and Dorothy McCrea. She is survived by sons Marcus (Katherine) Duran (Edmond, WA) and Frank Couture (Seattle); daughter Joyce (Greg) Burgin (Everett); granddaughters Andrea Gruese and Taylor Wilson, and Sam, an adopted granddaughter (all of Everett); and grandsons Michael Lyons Jr. (Everett) and Jhamare Duran (Edmunds); two great-granddaughters, Skyler and Alexis Walker (Everett); two sisters, Alvina Burns (Polson) and Darlene Heaton (Ronan); several nieces and nephews; and her loving, faithful companion dog, Brittany. Cremation has taken place and services were held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Everett, Washington. A memorial service will be held on the Flathead Reservation at a later date.
