SONNY BURLAND
RONAN -- Lloyd G. "Sonny" Burland, 83, died here on July 27, 2004. He was born on July 3, 1921, in Ronan, to Antoinette (Peone) and Gilbert Burland. Raised in Ronan, he attended school at the Ursulines and in Ronan. Sonny married Alta McDonald in 1940. They made their home in Hot Springs, before moving to Missoula, where Sonny worked in the mills. He later moved to Cutbank, then San Francisco, and later Seattle, before returning to the reservation. Upon his return he worked as a ranch hand, bar keep and for the Tribes in Forestry. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Dennis, and adopted son Kenny Burland. He is survived by his children, Babe and Gary (both of St. Ignatius) and Andrea "Dad Do" Thomas (Ronan); sister Curly Fulkner (Polson); four nephews, Jimmy Skelton, and Art, Mike and Ronnie Trahan; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The wake began July 28 at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Ronan. Mass was celebrated on July 30 at Sacred Heart. Interment followed in the family cemetery near Ronan.

KATHRYN DOHERTY
RONAN -- Kathryn Emily Schall Doherty of St. Ignatius died on July 24, 2004, at the St. Luke Extended Care Facility here of natural causes. She was born on Feb. 8, 1914, in Ravalli, to William "Ed" Schall and Eva Kunkle, and reared in Pennsylvania. After her mother's death, she returned to Montana. Kathryn graduated from St. Patrick Hospital's School of Nursing in Missoula and became a public health nurse; her first job was at Fort Benton. She joined the Army and was a nurse during World War II in the South Pacific. In 1946 she married Robert W. "Bud" Doherty at Fort Lewis; they resided in Tacoma, WA, for many years. She was a PHN at Army bases and in some of the Tacoma schools. After her retirement she and Bud moved to Arlee, where they made their home on the old Ed Schall Ranch. She was preceded in death by both parents, her stepmother Anna, sister Frances Sullivan, and brother Billy Schall. She is survived by her sisters Rebecca Helding (Arlee), Cleo Lytle (Tucson, AZ) and Sidney Powell (Arlee); stepsister Virginia Olson (Polson); brother Ted Schall (Arlee); and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will have private services for Kathryn at a later date.

ARLAND ETTER
POLSON -- Bud Etter, 78, died of natural causes at St. Luke Extended Care in Ronan on July 8, 2004. He was born in Harvey, N.D., to Louis and Martha (Kalk) Etter on Sept. 24, 1925. The family lived in Bowbells, N.D., until 1938 and then moved to Polson. Bud moved to Seattle in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for three years and was awarded several medals. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He went to work for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle. He returned to Polson in 1960. He married Barbara Osburn in June 1954 and two boys were born to this union. They were later divorced. Bud worked at the Salish and Pondera bars until he retired. He was an avid golfer and hunter, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2986 in Polson. He is survived by his two sons, Michael (Sheri) Etter and Daniel VonNeida (all of the Seattle area); a grandson, Robert; sister DeLane Newgard (Polson); two nephews; five nieces; and several grandnephews and grandnieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jeannette Benson. A graveside military honors service was held on July 16 at Lakeview Cemetery, Polson.

ADA GOULD
RONAN -- Ada Gould died on July 30, 2004, at St. Luke's Community Hospital here. She was born on Aug. 31, 1913, in Bismarck, N.D. She was raised in Miles City and moved to the Mission Valley as a young woman, where she married William "Bill" Gould. They owned and operated the Buffalo Trail Ranch in the Round Butte area. Their original four heifers were sired by Old Whitey "Big Medicine," the nationally famous albino buffalo bull. They also raised cattle and quarter horses. One, "Chief Charlo," was the first registered quarter horse stallion in Lake County. Bill died in 1962. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Paul V. and Rose Speck; sister Pauline Speck; and brother Vernon Speck. She leaves behind three siblings and their spouses: CMS Paul W. (retired) and Gladys Speck (Polson); Bernice and Ferucio Freschet (Polson and New York) and Kathleen Young (Polson); and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. Ada requested no services and that her ashes be placed next to her husband at the Ronan Cemetery.

RONALD HOUT
ST. IGNATIUS -- Ronald Wayne Hout died in a car crash near here on July 28, 2004. He was born on Nov. 7, 1944, in Miles City to Robert Hout Sr. and Nelda Rebhan. In 1949, the family relocated to a ranch in the Valley View area, where Ron attended school. He graduated from Polson High School in 1962, after which he began working in the planer department at Plum Creek Lumber Co. in Pablo. This continued until 1965, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Upon serving honorably for six years, Ron returned to Plum Creek and realized his lifelong dream of becoming a rancher. He purchased several acres in St. Ignatius, where he raised everything from sheep to bison. He married Cindy Collins; they were later divorced. In 1983 he married Sylvia Robinson. Ron was always known for his strict work ethic, which enabled him to operate a successful ranch while concurrently working at Plum Creek for 42 years. He was also well-known as an avid outdoorsman. He is survived by his parents; siblings Robert, Charlie, Carol and Melvin; his children, Ron Jr., Amy, Matthew and Amanda; and two grandchildren.

RENE LAFLEY
ARLEE -- Rene Nina "Baby Girl" Lafley died on July 23, 2004, near Dixon, as a result of injuries sustained in an auto crash. Baby Girl was born on June 5, 1962, in St. Ignatius, to Robert "June Bug" and Anna Darlene (McClure) Lafley. Raised in the Arlee area, she was in one of the first graduating classes at Two Eagle School. A member of the Salish-Kootenai Tribes, she was proud of her ancestry, being one of Chief Charlot's great-granddaughters. In her spare time she enjoyed writing poetry, working crossword puzzles and being with her family and friends. She enjoyed working various jobs in the woods such as cutting trees, post and poles, and fighting fires. She was preceded in death by her partner, Richard McDonald; her father; and a niece, Pretty Girl; as well as many extended family members. She leaves behind her mother; her children, Kenny McDonald, LaReza "Bobby" Lafley and Craig Lafley; a granddaughter, Shaylene Anna McDonald; her sisters and brothers, Roberta "Injun" (Les Fisher) Lafley, LeAnn Lafley, Billy Bob Lafley, Clem (Jeanette) Lafley, and James (Angel) McClure; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and a large extended family. A wake was conducted at the Community Center in Arlee. Mass was celebrated in the Jocko Catholic Church. Interment followed in the Jocko Catholic Cemetery.

GEORGE LEFTHAND
HOT SPRINGS -- George Lefthand died at his home here on July 23, 2004. He was born to Sakalai and Mary Susan Finley on Jan. 15, 1933, in Lonepine. A member of the Salish-Kootenai Tribes, he grew up on the Flathead Reservation. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his discharge from the service, he returned to the reservation. He later attended a barber college in Texas. He liked the woods and logged for most of his working life. George enjoyed singing and playing his guitar, hunting, fishing, and telling jokes. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents; his wife, Caroline; two brothers and a sister; sons George Jr. and Peter; and his grandsons Tyler and Justin Benoist. He is survived by sons Russell and Guy (both of Ronan), daughters Norma Fox (Ronan), Ramona Baney (Libby) and Georgia Wallace (Troy); sisters Cecille (Washington) and Alice Hewankorn (Niarada); 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Traditional wake services were conducted in Elmo. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on July 26 at the Elmo Hall and was followed by burial with military honors at the Dayton Cemetery.

WILMA LONEY
ST. IGNATIUS -- Wilma Margaret Loney died on July 14, 2004, in Ronan. She was born in Cascade on March 7, 1916, to William and Julia Cram. She grew up on the ranch on the west side of Sullivan Hill on Frost Creek. She went to school at Flat Creek, Sullivan Valley School and Cascade High School. She met and married Bill Vineyard in 1939. They had one daughter, Vonnie, and one granddaughter, Michelle. They both preceded her in death. She married Laurie Loney in 1953. Over the years they lived in Great Falls, Highwood, Shonkin, Marion and Lost Prairie. They moved to the Mission Valley in 1993 where they raised and registered Morgan horses. Laurie passed away in November of 1995. Wilma is survived by her sister, Vivian Brewer (Cascade); niece Barbara Roat (Alberton), nephew Bill Brewer (Powell Butte, OR);. stepchildren Sharon Ruple, Clay Loney, Cleve Loney (all of Great Falls) and Ross Loney (Tucson, AZ). Services were conducted on July 19 at the St. Ignatius Christian Church.

FELIX MORAN JR.
POLSON -- Felix F. Moran Jr. died on July 25, 2004, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula from complications following heart surgery. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eunice, and second wife, Ursula. He is survived by his two sons, Trey and wife Connie (Polson) and Tim and wife Karen (Rollins); daughter Monya Virgil and husband Jim (Coeur d'Alene, ID); six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Pat (Houston). A graveside service was held on July 29 at Lakeview Cemetery in Polson.
