Helen Wenzel

Helen Wenzel, 65, of Broadus died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at the Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City.

Mrs. Wenzel was born on Nov. 9, 1939, in South St. Paul, Minn., the daughter of Louis and Eleanor Carlson Tourville. She was raised and attended schools in South St. Paul and graduated from highs school there.

When she was in her early 20s, she contracted polio, which, through her strength, she successfully fought and never had any complications from the illness.

One of the interests Mrs. Wenzel had while growing up in South St. Paul was watching her family play sports, especially baseball and hockey. Even after leaving Minnesota she followed the North Stars and Twins.

In 1966, she and Delano Copley were married in South St. Paul. They moved to Broadus in 1968, where he died as a result of a car accident on April 13, 1969.

She continued living in Broadus and in the fall of 1969, Darrell Wenzel walked into where she was working. When he saw the sparkle in her eyes, he knew he was in love. She was the person who saw the good in everyone and from that day she knew this was the man with whom she wanted to spend the rest of her life.

The couple farmed in the Broadus area and she was able to do all the chores around the house and farm. She was the first one up and the last one to bed.

When the family moved into town, Mrs. Wenzel worked at the local hotel before working as a cook at the Homestead and the Cashway Diner. She was an excellent cook, especially known for her caramel rolls, and many people tried to get her recipes, but in a charming way she would not let her secret out.

Everyone knew that Mrs. Wenzel had a love for children, so when Mr. Wenzel began trucking, she started a day care in her home so she could bring children in to share her love. The first day a child came into her home, a special relationship begin to build. It wasn't long until all her children couldn't wait to come over. She also understood each family's needs and would do what was necessary to make sure each child was taken care of down to birthdays and holidays.

Mrs. Wenzel was very good with her hands and enjoyed quilting and sewing. She also loved being around people and enjoyed playing cards and games. But most of all she loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her survivors include her husband, Darrell of Broadus; four children, Jim and his wife Kandi of Atlanta, Ga., Ann Copley of Winfield, Kan., Darlene and her husband Darrel Smith of Sonnette and Mark and his wife Rita of Broadus; 18 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Survivors also include her mother of South Saint Paul; three brothers, Eugene, Keith and George; four sisters, Lucy, Julie, Eva and Annette; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her first husband, Delano, she was preceded in death by her father, Louis Tourville.
