Glenn Brandt

Glenn Brandt, age 83, died peacefully at the Pondera Nursing Home in Conrad on Feb. 7, 2001.

He was born on Nov. 15, 1917, in Morris, Minn., to Conrad and Gena Brandt. Glen grew up with his sister and three brothers in the beautiful farmland country of north central Minnesota.

He eventually graduated from the local agricultural college, where he also excelled in track and boxing. He was extremely fond of music and grew up singing, playing instruments and whistling with his family and friends.

In 1942, he married Olive Clemenson in Gonvick, Minn. They had a son, Gary, and a daughter, Vicki.

Glenn's early career occupations included truck driver, bartender and a small dairy business. In 1954, he moved the family to Conrad, where he began life as a carpenter and home builder. Glenn's skills as a craftsman and perfectionist became well-known throughout the area. He was as comfortable pouring a concrete slab as he was crafting fine cabinetry for some lucky family's kitchen or dining area. Quality homes built by Glenn are found today in Conrad, Great Falls and the Dearborn area. Many of these were built in their entirety by Glenn from top to bottom.

He also had a great love of nature, especially trees. His foresight and investment of planting small seedlings many years ago now grace many of the quiet streets of Conrad as beautiful trees, and will be enjoyed by the residents and visitors to Conrad for many generations to come. He always felt trees were a vital necessity for a quality life on this earth.

His wife, Olive, preceded him in death in 1992.

He is survived by a brother Ralph of Othello, Wash.; by his son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Susan Brandt of Ulm; and daughter and son-in-law Vicki and Bill FitzGerald of Helena; grandchildren Amber Brandt of Great Falls, Thane and Kathy Brandt and great grandson Zachary of Helena, Shale Brandt of Great Falls, Jami and Clint FitzGerald/Romney of Huson and Geoff and Kristi FitzGerald of Bozeman; and his "grand dogs," Sage and Tanner.

He is also survived by his other "daughter," niece Kelly and her husband Bruce Martin as well as their children, Mikel, Kiley, Cutter and Kesler. He leaves behind many beloved family members, including Jane and Lloyd Debruyker of Dutton.

He will also be missed by two very special friends and companions, Alton Knudsen and Betty Johnson, both of Conrad.

Anyone wishing to do something special in memory of Glenn, please contribute to your favorite charity, plant a tree, visit a friend or loved one who can't get out on their own, or love an animal.

A memorial service was held at the Pondera Valley Lutheran Church in Conrad on Saturday, Feb. 10.

Robert Albin Lilyblade
