Wally "Snooky" Pettit

Wally "Snooky" Pettit, 74, of Hastings, Minn., and owner of a ranch in Cohagen, died unexpectedly on Monday, March 21, 2005.

Mr. Pettit was born in 1930 in Loretto, Minn., to Andrew and Atlanta Tessmer Pettit Sr. He attended Mound High School and quit during the 10th grade to pursue a career in the milk business.

He served two years in the Army, stationed in Alaska during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Pettit then became a milk driver for Dairy Home. He met Marlene Penrod on a blind date in 1954. They married three months later and had six children.

In 1957, Mr. Pettit founded Polka Dot Dairy.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman his entire life. Some of his most memorable trips were in Canada, Alaska and Argentina. He supported the National Rifle Association, Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited. As a young man he would hunt with his father in eastern Montana. He fell in love with the area and eventually purchased a ranch in Cohagen.

Mr. Pettit was the type of person who could accomplish anything he made up his mind to do. He worked hard his entire life, but always took time out for play. He was an honorary Irishman in the St. Paul St. Patrick's Day parade in 1983. He later received an award for Minnesota Grocer of the Year in 1996. Mr. Pettit continued to support the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Camp Courage for disabled children and adults.

He was a collector of antique International Harvester tractors. He also loved throwing parties where there were always plenty of food and refreshments. Making sure everyone around him was having a good time was his priority. He truly had a heart of gold. His grandchildren were his pride and joy.

His family and friends will miss Mr. Pettit dearly. He will be with them in spirit at the annual Miles City Bucking Horse Sale.

His survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Penny; his children, Brenda (Jack) Fahey, Bruce (Lori) Pettit, Dana Pettit, Dawn (Dave) Wigness, Patrick Pettit and Joel (Jessica) Pettit; grandchildren, Kelly, Danielle, Chad, Jamie, Desiree, David, Ryan and Jackson; his brothers, Andrew Pettit Jr. (Carol), Tom Pettit (Dianne); and his loving companion, Mack.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 25, at 11 a.m. in Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Hastings. Arrangements are by Caturia-Schmidt Funeral Home in Hastings.

Memorials are preferred to the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association and Our Savior's Lutheran Church Endowment Fund.

Donald C. Hobson

Donald C. Hobson, 84, of Terry, died at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Helena on Monday, March 21, 2005.

Born Nov. 5, 1920, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, he was the son of Clinton and Edith Johnson Hobson. He attended schools in Wisconsin and moved to California.

On Oct. 7, 1944, he entered the United States Army, during World War II, where he served until his honorable discharge on June 4, 1946.

He returned to California where drove truck for many years. In 1950, he went to the Chicago Motive Trades Institute where he completed the Body and Fender Rebuilding training. For the last 12 years, he worked for the F.M.C. Company.

On Sept. 3, 1987, he and Kay Wimer were married in Portland, Ore. They moved to Terry in June 2004.

Mr. Hobson is survived by his wife, Kay of Terry; his son, Donald Hobson of St. Cloud, Minn.; two daughters, Addie Mae Hobson of Terry and Linda G. Brandt of San Jose, Calif.; four children; three great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a special nephew, Nick Hobson of San Jose, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and a sister.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 28, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the LDS Church in Miles City. Interment, with full military honors, will follow at the Eastern Montana Veterans Cemetery in Miles City.

If desired, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Ella R. Curtiss

Ella R. Curtiss, 72, of Circle died Thursday, March 17, 2005, at her home.

She was born in McCone County on June 6, 1932, to Ruth and Earl Lingle. Mrs. Curtiss attended grade school in McCone County and attended High School in Frazer.

On Oct. 29, 1948, she and Welcome J. Curtiss were married in Wolf Point.

In 1950 they moved onto their own farm where Mrs. Curtiss was a homemaker and farmwife.

She worked at McCone Health Center as a cook for 18 years and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, 4-H and Farm Bureau. Mrs. Curtiss enjoyed crocheting, gardening and quilting. She enjoyed collecting mugs from all 50 states and other countries. Her greatest joy was her family, her children and grandchildren.

Her survivors include three sons, Darell (Questa), and Danny (Laurie) both of Circle, and Ed (Deanna) of Glendive; three daughters, Beverly (Dave) Edwards of Lindsay, Marilyn Mitchell and Sally (Ralph) Lehner, both of Circle; 21 grandchildren, Diana (Shawn) Monson, Justin Curtiss, Cari (Josh) Curtiss, Karla (Ian) Huseby, Chuck (Audrey) Kerr, Melissa (Chris) Gaub, Eric Edwards, Jared Edwards, Brian Edwards, Zane Curtiss, Zach Curtiss, Meccala (Kory) Draper, Melita Mitchell, Mindy Mitchell and Rebel Nelson, Jesse (Lindsay) Mitchell, Taryn (Chance) Micheletto, Todd Lehner, Tolby Lehner, Trent Lehner, Jack Curtiss, Clay Curtiss; and 14 great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Jordan Monson, Cameron, Maia and Ella Rose Curtiss, Tiffani, Collin and Jaqcee Huseby, Julie Kerr, Dawson and Kaitlyn Gaub, Dakota and Shadyn Degraffenreid and Amariah Mitchell.

Survivors also include three sisters, Elsie Belzer of Nashua, Jennie Kawasaki of Wolf Point and Cecil (Jerry) Loges of Vida.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Welcome Curtiss; her parents; one brother; and two sisters.

A Private Family Memorial Service will take place at a later date.

Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.

Arlene Parker

Arlene Parker, 84, longtime area resident died Friday, March 18, 2005, in the Holy Rosary Extended Care Facility.

Born Aug. 18,1920, in Carlyle, Wibaux County, she was a daughter of Andrew and Mary Marciniak Kryzsko. She grew up and attended schools in Carlyle, later moving to Wibaux, where she married Merlin Parker in 1941.

Mrs. Parker worked at various jobs as a housekeeper before moving to Missoula in 1956 to work as a Nurses Aide with handicapped people.

In 1966, she moved to Miles City and worked for many years as a cook at the Sacred Heart Rectory.

She was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and had been a member of the Altar Society.

Survivors include her daughters, Elaine Walsh and Karen (Donald) Gill-More of Washington; her son, Darrell (Diana) Parker of California; a sister, Rose (Gale) Youngbauer of Forsyth; a brother-in-law, Myron Olson of Minnesota; her grandchildren John, Steve, David, Ryan, Ray, and Erick; and her great-grandchildren, Devin, Parker, Anna, Campbell, Maddison, Savannah and Vailey.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Merlin; her sisters, Genevieve Drennen, Theresa Job, Sophie Clark and Mary Olson; and brothers, Frank, Tony, Tifel, Albin and Johnny Kryzsko.

Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2005, in the Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2005, in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Rite of Committal will follow in the Calvary Cemetery.
