William “Bill” Sydney Harper, 80, died in Helena on Oct. 27, 2003. Since his return to Helena in his retirement, he was a regular at Morning Light coffee shop–coffee black, a poppyseed muffin, an available seat and a willing ear for any fellow traveler.

Glenn L. Voelkel
Glenn LeRoy Voelkel, 63, formerly of Helena, died of cancer in Missoula on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003.

Anne Zimmerman
Anne Zimmerman’s life began in Helena on Aug. 1, 1914, and ended in Chicago on Sept. 10, 2003, after a brief illness. She received her elementary education at Trinity School in Canyon Creek and Marysville and graduated from Helena High in 1932.

Bertha Opp
Bertha Opp, 91, of Helena for the past 10 years, passed away Oct. 5, 2003. She was the widow of John Opp, who passed away on Sept. 26, 1990.

Billie M. Willis
Billie Maurita Willis, 82, of Clancy, passed away Oct, 3, 2003, at her home. She was born on Oct. 14, 1920, in Paducah, Ky., to Marshall Edward Penn and Sallie Terrel Word. She married her high school sweetheart, Ernest E. Willis, on June 17, 1938, in Charleston, Mo. Her smile and optimism will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

Joel Stewart
Joel “Joe” Stewart died peacefully Oct. 10, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. His wife and children were at his side.

Ruby MacDonald Cloud
Surrounded by her family, Ruby MacDonald Cloud, 80, of East Helena passed away peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital on Oct. 4, 2003, after complications following surgery.

Andy Johnston
Andy was born June 2, 1915, in Wisconsin to Andy and Mary (Corum) Johnston. After several stops on their way west, the family arrived in Helena in 1930. Andy graduated from HHS in 1934.

William B. Downs
World War II veteran and avid skier William Blaine “Bill” Downs, 82, of Helena, died of complications of diabetes on Saturday, September 27, at St. Peter’s Hospital.

Mary Bernd-Cohen
Mary Bernd-Cohen, of Helena and Englewood, Fla., died peacefully on Saturday, September 27. She was 88.

Margaret Baumgartner
Margaret Mary Baumgartner, 82, passed away peacefully with loved ones present on Sept. 11, 2003, at the Beehive Homes in Helena.

John H. Morrison Sr.
John Haddow Morrison Sr., 101, died peacefully of old age at the Masonic Home in the Helena Valley on Sept. 14, 2003.
He was born in Manchester, England, on August 2, 1902, to Isabel Crawford Haddow and David Morrison. He arrived at Ellis Island on Sept. 15, 1911, and became a U.S. citizen in 1916.

William H. Loomis
William H. Loomis of Helena, 72, died in his home Sept. 11, 2003, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Irene ‘Marie’ E. Poepping
Irene “Marie” Poepping, 80, went to be with her Lord on August 8, 2003. She left us from Yuma, Colo.

Ed O. Storkson
On July l, 2003, Ed 0. Storkson of Helena passed away. He was born on Feb. 22, 1935, in Glasgow, Mont., to Clinton and Monte Mattfeldt Storkson. Ed served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1957, receiving a Purple Heart.

James C. Wattnem
James Carlyle Wattnem, 97, of the Helena Valley, passed away early Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at the Cooney Convalescent Home following an extended illness.

Kenneth A. Rohyans
Kenneth Arthur Rohyans, 84, died Friday, July 25, 2003, following a three-month hospitalization in both Salt Lake City and Helena due to medical complications from a difficult hip fracture.

Lyle A. Bourassa
Lyle Arthur Bourassa of Helena (formerly of Eureka), 81, went to be with the Lord on July 14, 2003.

Alice A. Mlekush
Alice Ann Mlekush died July 14, 2003, at home in the arms of her loving husband Don.

Eleanor Emerentia Bushilla
Eleanor Emerentia Bushilla, 82, died of natural causes July 11, 2003, in the comfort of her Helena home.

Lérin Ann Jorgensen
Lérin Ann Jorgensen, 20, died July 6, 2003, in a vehicle accident on Canyon Ferry Road outside Helena.

Edna O. Spurgeon
Edna Olean Spurgeon passed away on June 30, 2003, in Helena. She was born August 29, 1921, and grew up in Missouri.

C. William 'Bill' Mortieau
C. William “Bill” Mortieau, 89, of Helena passed away July 4, 2003, at Shelby House where he had been living for more than a year. He was born in Helena on November 13, 1913, to Charles James and Della Hooper Mortieau. Bill attended school in Helena, finishing with the class of 1932.

Dennis V. Dowling
Dennis V. Dowling, 61, died suddenly June 17, 2003, at his home in Belleville, N.J., of an apparent heart attack.

Edith Mae Smith
Edith Mae (Hespen) Smith, 74, passed away in Helena on July 3, 2003, following an extended illness. She was born July 5, 1928, in Bozeman to Abbie Cobus Hespen and John Louis Hespen. Edith completed her schooling in Townsend, graduating from Broadwater High School.

Marjorie M. DeFrance
Marjorie M. DeFrance, 81, passed away June 8, 2003, in Billings on the 63rd anniversary of her marriage to J.E. “Gene” DeFrance. She was born January 14, 1922, in Correctionville, Ia., the daughter of Clarence E. and Lilly Helen (Heath) Smith. Her family moved to Laurel, Montana, in 1938, where she graduated from high school.
