Gladys Luedecke
Longtime Libby resident Gladys H. Luedecke, 84, died on Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital.
She was born on July 30, 1915, at Butte, to James and Florence Breckenridge.
Gladys enjoyed cake decorating, bowling, walking, flowers, church, friends and family. She was much loved and will be missed.
Survivors include sons James Luedecke and his wife Anne, Atwater, Calif.; David Luedecke and his wife Angela, Garden City, Kan.; Donald Luedecke and his wife Marie, Gelnhausan, Germany; daughters June Clark, Libby, and Tonya Ledford and her husband Fred, Shawnee, Okla., and 21 grandchildren.
Private family services will be conducted.
Local arrangements are by Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.

Clarence W. Palmerton
Longtime Libby resident Clarence W. Palmerton, 86, died on Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at the Libby Care Center.
He was born on Dec. 31, 1912, at Henning, Minn., to Edward and Ellen Johnston Palmerton.
Clarence attended school in Pablo and married Dorothy Whitlatch in 1940.
He worked on the Fort Peck Dam Project, at the Anaconda Company smelter, and for the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad before moving to Libby in 1947.
Clarence worked first for the J. Neils Lumber Company and later for St. Regis Paper Company, retiring on Jan. 1, 1977.
He enjoyed walking, fishing, hunting and gardening.
Clarence was preceded in death by son Richard in 1948, brothers Melvin and Earl and sisters Hazel, Rosemand and Pearl.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy, Libby; sons Daniel Palmerton and his wife Peggy, Portland, Ore.; Darrel Palmerton and his wife Maureen, Libby; Kenneth Palmerton, Phoenix, Ariz.; Randy Palmerton, Libby; daughters Joanne Rosander and her husband Cisco, Portland, Ore.; Sherril Seifert and her husband Steven, Whitefish, and Judith Bailor and her husband Claude, Kalispell; brother Ernest Palmerton and his wife Connie, Great Falls; sister Norah Rux and her husband Clifford, Snohomish, Wash.; 14 grandchildren, Tina, Debbie, Danyle, Jason, Jennifer, Jessica, Jeremy, Rick, Angela, Kelly, Brianna, Trinity, Kimberly and Nicole, and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Assembly of God Church with interment to follow at the City of Libby Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.

Ty Sheppard
Ty Sheppard, 31, of Troy, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital, following a long battle with cancer.
He was born on Oct. 4, 1967, at Glendale, Ariz., to Cyrus Sheppard Jr. and Mary Prouty Sheppard.
Ty was raised and educated at Glendale and later at Flagstaff, Ariz., where he graduated from high school.
He worked as a restaurant cook for many years in Colorado and for the past four years in Montana, at the Silver Spur in Troy and more recently at Treasure Mountain Casino and Restaurant in Libby.
Survivors include his mother, Mary Garcia, Flagstaff; father Cyrus Sheppard, Troy; sister Shari Sheppard, Troy, and brother Joey Sheppard, Grand Rapids, Mich.; grandmothers Margaret Sheppard, Peoria, Ariz., and Anna Prouty, Sun City, Ariz., and nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted at noon Tuesday at the Troy Christian Fellowship with Pastor Dick Barnes officiating.
Arrangements are under direction of Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.

Helen Belknap
Helen E. Belknap, 89, died Aug. 30, 1999, in Spokane.
She was born on Oct. 31, 1909, in Spokane, to Grace and Clifford H. Clay.
Helen attend Spokane schools and graduated from Lewis & Clark High School.
She married Earl Belknap on Oct. 30, 1951.
Helen was a hostess and cashier in the hospitality industry, was employed at Greenoughs Grocery and worked with the Deaconess Hospital Volunteers.
She also volunteered with the annual American Cancer Society fund drive.
She was a member of Women of the Washington Water Power, Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Manito Methodist Church.
Survivors include son Clifford Laehn and daughters Barbara Downs and Marti White, all of Spokane; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, one niece and one nephew.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Earl in 1976; daughter Bette Byington and great-grandson Brandon Kelsey.
Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at the First Presbyterian Church in Spokane, and a graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Troy City Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials be made to a charity of the donors choice.
Heritage Funeral Home, at 508 N. Government Way in Spokane, is in charge of arrangements.

Jim Carney
Jim Carney, 57, gifted actor, sculptor, painter and teacher, died of a sudden heart attack Sunday night.
He was born on Nov. 2, 1941, in Billings, to Ethel and Charles Carney.
Jim attended Eastern Montana College where he earned a bachelor of science degree in education with an extended major in physical science.
He was employed as program coordinator and literacy teacher with Project Challenge: Work Again, a dislocated worker program. He was a state certified teacher and represented PCWA on the Lincoln County Resource Committee which coordinates agency services to the community. Jim was also a board member of the Economic Development Council.
He married Eileen Driscoll, a Libby High School teacher, in 1996.
A member of St. Joseph Catholic Parish, Jim served as a Eucharistic minister and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was a volunteer with the Libby Logger Speech and Drama team and involved in Kootenai Karacter, Troy Community Theater and Donovan’s Dinner Theater productions.
Jim was vice president of the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers and a board member of the Libby Pioneer Society.
He is survived by his wife Eileen, Libby; sister Carole and her husband Everett, Billings, niece Tory Wright and her husband Mike, Denver and nephew Lance Jones and his wife Nancy, Phoenix, Ariz.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16. Rosary will be held in the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Jean Habeck
Longtime Libby nurse Jean F. Habeck, 68, died Saturday, Sept. 11, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital following a long illness.
She was born on Aug. 26, 1931, at Hoquim, Wash., to Paul and Emma Boerner.
She attended school at Aberdeen, Wash., graduating from high school in 1949. She completed nurses training at Olympia, Wash., graduating as a registered nurse in April 1953.
Jean was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1953, serving until her honorable discharge in 1956, when she came to Libby.
She started working at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital in 1958 and during 35 years of service worked as a nurse, as director of nurses and director of purchasing and supply until retiring in 1992.
An avid bird watcher, Jean was a longtime member of the National Audubon Society and loved the Montana outdoors.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.
Survivors include her children, Bruce Habeck, Denver, Colo., and Kathy Sauby, Oilmont; brothers John Boerner, Montesano, Wash., and Francis Boerner, Cosmopolis, Wash., and six grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Robert Edwards officiating.
Memorials may be made to Libby Volunteer Ambulance, Box 777, Libby.
Arrangements are under direction of Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
