Dorothy Barnard
Dorothy E. Bassaraba Zajanc Barnard, 85, died on Sunday, July 27, 2003, at her home outside of Libby.
She was born on May 20, 1918, to Nick and Raifta Bassaraba, delivered by her father in a tent near what was to be her family’s ranch home near Prospect Creek at the base of the Cabinet Mountains.
Little did anyone know that many years later the family ranch would belong to Dorothy.
She grew up on the ranch, walking to town with her brothers and sisters to attend Libby schools. In the winter months Dorothy would stay in town with local families so she could go to school.
She married Walter Zajanc on April 10, 1937. They had two children, daughter Carolyn and son Gary and purchased a farm five miles south of Libby. They later purchased the family farm where Dorothy was born, and where she lived until her death.
After Walt’s death, Dorothy married Frank Barnard on Dec. 10, 1984.
Known as a tough, hard-working farm lady, Dorothy’s love for every aspect of farming never diminished. She loved caring for the cattle, dogs, cats and birds that made the farm their home. She looked forward to each new year which meant growing a big vegetable garden and planting a few more flowers.
During the cold Montana winters, it was not unusual for baby chicks to be hatched in her warm kitchen, where newborn calves were brought in to dry off by the wood stove before being taken back to the barn to be with their mothers.
Stray animals seemed to know that Dorothy was an easy mark and became part of her menagerie.
Dorothy sold fresh eggs and milk for many years and although she never tired of farm work, she found time for fishing and camping. She also loved music and looked forward to a good dance.
There was always room for one more at her table, and she was famous for the feasts she prepared for haying crews during the summer months.
Meals were usually prepared from her pantry stocked with her own canned fruit and vegetables.
Libby was the only place that Dorothy wanted to be and she never ceased to marvel at the beauty that surrounded her.
A few days before her death, Dorothy was able to sit on her porch and watch the hay being cut, baled and hauled away. It gave her great satisfaction and comfort to know that the hay had once more been “taken care of.”
Dorothy was preceded in death by her first husband Walt; her father and mother, Nick and Raifta; sisters Mary Garber and Christine Welch; and brothers Pete and George Bassaraba.
Survivors include her caring husband Frank, her son Gary Zajanc and his wife Billie, her daughter Carolyn Peck and her husband Frank, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
