Greg Sauber
Greg J. Sauber, 73, died Thursday morning, Jan. 29, 1998, at his home in Libby.
He was born Nov. 15, 1924, at Gold Creek, to Bernard and Lena Hollenback Sauber.Greg attended school in Drummond and graduated from high school there in 1943.
He became a merchant marine in Seattle at the age of 18, and by the age of 24 he held a chief engineer's license and worked on various ocean-going ships.
He married Helen Henley on Dec. 15, 1950, in New York City.
In 1958 he graduated from Seattle University with a degree in mechanical engineering and obtained a professional engineering license in 1964. Greg worked for the U.S. Corps of Engineers on various projects, including the Minuteman missile project at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, and most recently the Libby Dam Project.
He moved to Libby in 1967 to help start the dam project and retired in 1984. He continued to work as a consultant on other engineering and construction projects.
Survivors include his wife Helen of Libby; daughters Mary Jo Sauber, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Patty Sauber Tracy, Redondo Beach, Calif.; son Greg of Denver, Colo.; brothers Paul and Edwin, both of Seattle, and sister Madalen Sugrue, Anaconda.
Visitation was from 1-7 p.m. Monday, followed by a rosary beginning at 7 at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel.
Mass of the Resurrection was at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with interment following in the City of Libby Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Joseph M. (Joe) Obermayer
Joseph M. (Joe) Obermayer, 33, of Troy, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, as the result of injuries received when he was struck by a train near Libby.
He was born Jan. 31, 1965, at Livingston. Raised and educated at Troy, Joe had worked in the timber and lumber industry in the Troy and Libby area. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing and hunting.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Jimmie Obermayer.
Survivors include his wife LeLonnie and children Matthew James, MaKayla Jacquelle and Mitchell Joseph, all of Troy; his mother and step-father, Nancy and Jim Cosgriff, Libby; and two sisters, Monica Cratty, Anchorage, Alaska, and Meredith Funkhouser, Moyie Springs, Idaho.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Troy Church of God with the Rev. Gene Bushnell officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.

Robert E. Knight
Robert E. Knight, 81, of Libby, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at St. John's Lutheran Hospital.
He was born at Hillsboro, N.D., to Ralph and Elisa Knight. The family lived at Wibaux, and later in Butte, where Robert was raised and educated. After graduating from high school Robert was employed as a miner, working in the Mount Con, Anselmo, Leonard and Belmont mines in Butte.
He married Marjorie Scott on Jan. 18, 1938, at Deer Lodge.
The Knights came to Libby in 1954 and Robert was employed by the J. Neils Lumber Company, St. Regis and Champion International, where he worked on the green chain and out of the company shop until retiring in August 1980 with 26 years' service.
An avid outdoorsman, Robert enjoyed snowcatting, fishing, boating, hunting and camping, as well as sleigh riding and hiking. He also enjoyed working on anything mechanical but found his greatest love in being with his family.
Robert and Marjorie celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary earlier this month.
He was preceded in death by three children, Robert E. Knight Jr., Sharon Knight and Jeanne Kliensasser, and a great-granddaughter, Breanna Pattie.
Survivors are his wife Marjorie, Libby; daughters Carolyn Schull and her husband Billie Joe; Rosalie Warboys and her husband Ben Wurz, and Deborah Byrd and her husband Jim, all of Libby; brother Carl Knight; sisters Erma Demler and Esther Cortez; 10 grandchildren, Nandeelie, Robert, James, John, Holly, Hans, Gary, Chuck, Brian, Clinton, Marjorie and Lydia, and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mike Whitford officiating.

Joseph V. (Joe) Holzer
Joseph V. (Joe) Holzer, 76, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at his home in Libby.
He was born on March 29, 1921, at Strasberg, N.D., to Valentine and Genevieve Fisher Holzer.
Joe was raised and educated in North Dakota. He worked construction most of his life, operating a construction company in Bismarck, N.D., and later working as a heavy equipment operator on major construction projects throughout the country. He lived at Yakima, Wash., before coming to Libby in 1983.
Joe was preceded in death by three children, JoAnn, Angeline and Eugene.
Survivors include seven children, Tony Holzer, Libby; Bob Holzer, Bismarck; Joleen Steiger, Patrick (Ole) Holzer, Pat Holzer, Donna Lindsay and Don Holzer, all of Libby; brothers Adam Holzer, Anaconda; John Holzer, Bismarck; sisters Cecilia Thormahlen, Anaconda; Emma Holzer, Ann Bosworth and Mary Diehert, all of Bismarck; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Private service arrangements are by Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Libby Volunteer Ambulance, Box 777, Libby.

Irv Dinning
Donald Irvin Dinning, 68, of Libby, died Jan. 25, 1999, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.
He was born on May 29, 1930, at Rush, Colo., to Roland E. and Mary F. (Walker) Dinning.
The family moved to Idaho in 1937, and Irv attended school near Copeland and at Porthill before entering high school in Bonners Ferry. He was active in boxing and graduated with the Class of 1948.
Irvin enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Sept. 30, 1950, and trained at San Diego. He was stationed at Hickman Naval Base in Honolulu, Hawaii, and returned to San Diego to complete Hospital Corps School, graduating on June 5, 1952.
He served in a Bremerton, Wash., hospital, aboard the U.S.S. Consolation and in Korea and Japan until his honorable discharge on July 20, 1954.
Irvin and his brother Ray enrolled at a Spokane beauty school where Irv met Barbara, whom he married on April 10, 1955.
Irvin and Ray opened a styling salon in Bonners Ferry, operating it for three years.
From 1959 until his death, Irvin worked in investments and real estate, and as his children grew up, they joined him in the business.
Survivors include Bobby, his wife of 43 years; sons Dan and his wife Mary and their children Lisa, Brian and Kevin, Bonners Ferry; Rick and his wife Chris and their children Madison, Taylor and Chase, also of Bonners Ferry; daughter Dianna and her husband Tim Rooney and their children Kelly and Brenna, Libby; and son Jay and his wife Sarah and their children Riley and Crawford, also of Libby.
Irvin is also survived by five brothers, Gifford and his wife Lura; Leighton and his wife Evelyn; Ray and his wife Carolyn, LaVern and his wife Eunice, and Ken and his wife Donna, all of Bonners Ferry; sister Mary Ula and husband Bud Schaller, Thompson Falls, and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Beula Lyle of Redwood Valley, Calif., and infant son, Larry Wayne.
Irvin enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He had a great love for birds and wildlife and for his friends.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. (Idaho time) on Friday, Jan. 29, at the First Baptist Church in Bonners Ferry, 6711 El Paso, with Pastor Darwin Scofield of the Libby church officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital, P.O. Box 2472, Spokane 99210-2472.

Marta Williams
Marta E. Williams of Troy died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at her home.
She was born at Denver, Colo., to William and Mary Ellen VanPelt Williams.
Marta attended school at Rifle, Colo., and graduated from Winchester High School
She was employed with Morrison & Knudson as an underground hoist operator.
Marta also lived in Alaska for a year.
Since 1985 she has lived off and on at Troy. She enjoyed singing at lounges and casinos and spending time with her children.
Survivors include her husband Mark W. Johnson Sr., Troy; sons Mark W. Johnson Jr., and Neil W. Johnson, both of Troy; her father William Williams, Henderson, Nev.; sisters Mimi Allen and her husband of Kingman, Ariz, and Micheal Jones and her husband John, Boise, Idaho.
Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home in Libby.
Local arrangements are by the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
