Richard Winter

BIGFORK - Richard Winter, longtime Bigfork resident and fiddler, died Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Kalispell Regional Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 19, 1931, to Bernice Rudie Winter and Portus F. Winter in Missoula and lived his early years in the Swan and Mission Valleys. For the last 30 plus years, he has resided in the Ferndale-Bigfork area.

As a young man, he worked in farms and ranches in the Ronan area and entered the service of his country in the Air Force in 1951. He served during the Korean War and was discharged in 1954. Following his discharge from the service, he worked in the oil industry in the four corners area of Colorado, returning to his beloved Montana in 1959. He then worked in the construction industry and at logging until 1971. At that time he was injured in a logging accident and lost the use of his legs.

Although he had not finished eighth grade, he then began to pursue an education. He got a GED and entered college at Flathead Valley Community College in the Human Services Program. During his years at the college, he received a National Outstanding Junior and Community College Student Award; he graduated in 1983 with an Associate of Applied Science degree. He entered the University of Montana in pursuit of a bachelor's degree in social work, but poor health interrupted his work.

After a long hospitalization, he returned to his Swan Valley home and began work as a volunteer social services officer for veterans. Many veterans were recipients of his patient, professional care. In the early '90s he again became ill and experienced a long hospitalization. At this time, his legs were amputated, making travel and his work very difficult. From that time, he was largely confined to his home.

Dick will be remembered by friends and family as one who always was ready for a song. He bought a guitar as a teenager and taught himself how to play. He spent many hours entertaining friends and family and also had played professionally in various dance bands. As the years passed, he broadened his musical skills. He added banjo, accordion, and in 1975, he began to play fiddle. From that time on he was an enthusiastic and proud fiddler and was a member of the Old Time Fiddler's Association at the time of his death.

Dick's last years were painful and difficult, but few if any ever heard him complain. He always focused on the positive, his courage and equanimity apparent to all. He was always the one to listen to and to comfort others and to offer help. He was a proud and loving father, grandfather and uncle to a large and widely scattered family all of whom will miss him sorely.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Vivian. He is survived by two sons, three daughters and three adopted children and their families, Raymond Winter and Carol of Seattle, Ralph Wayne Winter and Rhonda and children of South Carolina, Sherri Carter and Ralph and son of Elko, Nev., Beverly McKay and children of Kalispell, Debbie Winter and children of Bigfork, Monica Kerutis and Brian and son of Bigfork, Janet Watmough and Shawn and children of Pincer Creek, Alberta and Martin Kitzmiller and Shari and children of Kalispell.

Three siblings and their families also survive him, Robert Winter and Evie of Kalispell, Ray Winter and Barbara of Selah, Wash., and Joanne Winter of Hawthorne, Nev., and their families.
