Marianne Cutting

KALISPELL - Marianne Cutting, 76, died Thursday, Jan. 1, at her home in Kalispell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1979, three brothers and one sister.

She is survived by four daughters, Jeri Tweet and husband Bill Johnson of Kalispell, Laura Stefanatz and husband Don of Scottsdale, Ariz., Elizabeth Lee and husband John of St. Ignatius, and Sharon Scharf and husband Dale of Sioux City, Iowa; three sons, Jim Craig and wife Judy of Idaho Falls, Al Cutting and wife Jane of Butte, and Jim Cutting and wife Cheryl of Butte; two sisters, Anna Yunker of Brainerd, Minn., and Tillie Collins of Portland, Ore.; 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Maria Cemetery in Butte.

Arrangements are by the Johnson Mortuary & Crematory.

William E. Carlson

MISSOULA - William E. Carlson, 81, of Missoula died of natural causes Thursday, Jan. 9, at St. Patrick Hospital.

He was born Feb. 15, 1916, in Drake, N.D., to Emil E. and Emma E. Carlson. He lived with his family in Bellingham, Hartford and Renton, Wash. He graduated from Renton High School in 1934. He started his work career on the Pacific Coast Railroad in 1935, moved to the Northern Pacific Railway in 1939, became extra gang foreman in 1942 at Kelso, Wash., section foreman in 1943 at Centralia, Wash., track supervisor in 1947, assistant roadmaster in 1950, at Yakima and Centralia, promoted to roadmaster in 1954 at Butte and Tacoma, Wash. He was promoted to division roadmaster of the Rocky Mountain Division in 1962 in Missoula. In 1970 the Northern Pacific became the Burlington Northern Railroad. He was promoted to assistant superintendent of maintenance of way in 1970. His territory was from Sandpoint, Idaho to Casper, Wyo. He retired in 1976 at the age of 58 due to open heart surgery. He was one of the longest living open-heart surgery patients in Missoula.

On Oct. 21, 1938, he was married to Clara A. Cameron in Seattle. The couple lived in Renton, until moving to Centralia in 1943. They moved to Butte in 1954, Tacoma in 1961 and then to Missoula in 1962.

He was a member of the Elks, Eagles and Northern Pacific Railway Historical Association.

A beloved and dear one, he took great pride in his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, gardening, fishing, railroad and Montana history, travel and music.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Clara of Missoula; one daughter, Marion and the late Douglas Peterson of Billings; two sons, Richard and his wife, Marilyn Carlson of Everett, Wash., and Ernest and his wife, Judi Carlson of Northridge, Calif.; sisters, Lempi Cottingham of Seattle, Alli Johnson of Cle Elum, Wash., Dorothy Vanderford of Lewistown; brother, George Carlson of St. Paul, Minn.; grandchildren, Cindy Elliot of Oklahoma City, William Carlson of Blacksburg, Va., Robert Carlson of Blacksburg, Douglas Peterson of Pasadena, Calif., Sara Christensen of Bozeman, Lisa Nelon of Henderson, Nev., Damen Carlson of Las Vegas, Daniel Carlson of Las Vegas, Christina Carlson of Simi Valley, Calif., Mike Whiteman of Las Vegas, Andy Hull of Los Angeles, Jodi Klinger and Melanie Hull; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 and Friday, Jan. 16, at the Sunset Memorial Cemetery, 7405 Mullan Rd.

Services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Malletta Family of Funeral Homes, Sunset Chapel 7405 Mullan Rd. Cremation follows the service. A reception follows in the funeral home's community room.

Honorary pallbearers will be William's grandsons, William, Robert, Douglas, Dennis, Damen, Daniel, Mike, Frank and Andy.

The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, Missoula County Unit, P.O. Box 3914, Missoula, Mont., 59806.

Forrest Gladden Sund

THOMPSON FALLS - Forrest Gladden Sund, 89, died Monday, Jan. 12, at the Clark Fork Valley Hospital of natural causes.

Forrest was born to Martin and Matilda Larson Sund on July 10, 1908, at Pigeon Lake, Alberta. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church in infancy.

He received his education in Warland and at North Central High School in Spokane.

On March 14, 1936, Forrest married Vera Louise Wickersham in Missoula. He worked as a millwright and foreman in mills in Lewiston and Moyie Springs, Idaho. He later owned and operated a Phillips 66 bulk oil plant, a service station and car dealership in Thompson Falls.

His interests were many and varied. As a child, he enjoyed hunting and fishing in the area that was later flooded and became Lake Koocanoosa. Forrest also enjoyed wood working and built the family home where he and his wife resided. He took pride in the landscaping and gardening surrounding his home. Forrest was an avid reader and storyteller, especially to his granddaughters, which he will be remembered for.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Vera of the family home; son, Dave and wife, Linda of Thompson Falls and their two daughters, Abby and Maggie; a daughter, Genelle "Pete" and husband, Michael Rogers of Forks, Wash., and their three daughters, Leslie Swidecki, Libby and Mikki; and brother, Wellwood Sund of Lewiston.

Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Community Congregational Church in Thompson Falls. The Rev. Gaylund Olson will officiate. Burial follows at the Whitepines Cemetery near Trout Creek.

Due to his love of books, the family suggests memorials to the Thompson Falls Library.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Coffelt-Bunch Funeral Service of Thompson Falls.

Maude L. Bally Whitney

KALISPELL - Maude L. Bally Whitney, 84, died Monday, Jan. 12, at home of cancer.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Arthur B. Whitney of Bigfork; one son, Arthur Jay Whitney and Sandra Lode Whitney of Helena; two daughters, Barbara Jo and David Nordfors of Seattle and Mary Susan Whitney of Bend, Ore.; younger sister, Lois Bally King of Fernley, Nev.; cousins, grandchildren, step-grandsons, nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Bigfork Methodist Church. Burial follows at the Lonepine Cemetery in Bigfork. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at the Johnson Mortuary in Bigfork.

Arrangements are by the Johnson Mortuary and Crematory in Kalispell.

James E. Amdal

POLSON - James E. Amdal, 68, of Polson died Friday, Jan. 2, in Polson after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty.

He is survived by his wife and best friend, Patricia of Polson; daughter Lisa Marie Thompson and her husband Brian of Edmonds, Wash.; stepson Michael Richard Rayner and his wife Brenda of Arlington, Wash.; brother Jack Amdal and his wife Eileen of Seattle; brothers-in-law, Jack Hupf of Seattle, and Buddy Hutchison and his wife Mazel of Burien, Wash.; six grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; dear friends Howard and Margaret Welty of Polson; and his faithful companion, "Peanuts."

No services are planned. Cremation and arrangements are by Grogan Funeral Home of Polson.

Harold Blackburn

CORVALLIS - Harold Vernon Blackburn, 63, of Corvallis died Thursday, Jan. 1, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula.

He was preceded in death by his father and a daughter, Laritta.

Survivors include his wife Maureen of Corvallis; his mother Florence L. Blackburn of Hamilton; four children, Gary Blackburn of Fort Hood, Texas, Marina Baker of Gresham, Ore., GiGi LeDoux of Anchorage, Alaska, and Rolaine Pittman of Yakima, Wash.; three stepchildren, Helen Soderberg of Spokane, Tom Krummes of Corvallis and Jeff Krummes of Hamilton; three brothers, Ira Blackburn of Craig, Colo., Phillip Blackburn of Camino, Calif., and Helton Blackburn of Waco, Neb.; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the Whitesitt Funeral Home in Stevensville.

Memorial services will be 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Hamilton.

Private interment with military honors will be held.

Leah Luft

BOISE, Idaho - Leah Luft, 72, died Friday, Jan. 2, at a Boise care facility.

Leah was born Jan. 24, 1925, in Worland, Wyo., as the second youngest of seven girls and two boys to Alex and Eva Lai. She was raised in rural eastern Montana. At age 18, she moved to Tacoma, Wash., to work at Boeing Aircraft. She returned to Montana and married Victor Luft in 1944.

Leah was a very loving mother to her three children, Al born in 1945, Curtis born in 1949, and Vicki born in 1955. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Telephone Pioneers. She was active in scouting and church activities when raising her children. She became known as "Momma Leah" to the many children she cared for over the years. Leah enjoyed gardening, golfing and camping, as well as country music and dancing. She also found peace and joy nurturing her roses.

She was preceded in death by her husband Victor; a son Curtis; her parents; a brother, Emanuel Lai; and three sisters, Alma, Marie and Pauline.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Al and Dana Luft of Milwaukee; a daughter, Vicki Luft of Boise; her brother, Albert Lai and his wife Eleanor of Ocean Park, Wash.; three sisters, Martha Bartolomaus and her husband Richard of Spokane, and Ester Ward and Frieda Roberge, both of Helena.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Garden City Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 202 Brooks, with Pastor David Ophus officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Leah's name to the Alzheimer Association, Southwest Montana Chapter.

Julia May Colyer

PLAINS - Julia May Colyer, 81, of Paradise died on Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998 at Clark Fork Valley Hospital in Plains.

Julia was born on Dec. 28, 1916, in Paradise, the daughter of Patrick C. and Ruby Johnston Cox. She grew up and attended school in Paradise and Plains.

On March 28, 1936, she married Jerry P. Colyer at Thompson Falls. The couple made their home in Paradise. Julia and Jerry enjoyed playing music at dances and other gatherings around Paradise and Plains. Julia always hoped for a big family and was granted her wish. She had 10 children, 30 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Of her 10 children, all were her favorites.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Kay Colyer of Buena Park, Calif., Michael and Sherrie Colyer of Columbia Falls, and David and JoAnne Colyer of Plains; seven daughters and sons-in-law, Karval and Walter Pickering of Paradise, Augrey and G.W. Knapp of Hot Springs, Wanda and Robert Copp of Paradise, Barbara and Vern Paull of Hamilton, Jacqueline and Glen Cummings of St. Ignatius, Terry and Charles McGuyer of Klammath Falls, Ore., and Kelly and Dennis Roberts of Estacada, Ore.; one sister, Wilma Vallentine of Hot Springs; 30 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry P. Colyer in 1989, a sister, Jacqueline Cox, and a brother, Patrick S. Cox.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, at the Paradise Church of God with Pastor Gary Kelly officiating. Burial will follow at Paradise Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Paradise Grade School Playground Fund, Box 126, Paradise, Mont. 59856.

Coffelt-Bunch Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Arretta Allison

KALISPELL - Arretta Dobrovolny Allison passed away on Thursday, Jan. 1, at Kalispell Regional Hospital following a brief struggle with cancer.

She is survived by her husband Bruce of Kalispell; sons Robert B. Allison of Kalispell and Staurt A. Allison of Atlanta; daughter Rose Marie Bennahmias of Albuquerque, N.M.; sister Joy Hook of Silver Spring, Md.; four grandchildren, Ian and Paige Allison of Kalispell, and Alycia Clore and Adam Bennahmias of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Kenneth, in infancy; and her sister, Mabel Stoianoff.

Cremation will take place at Johnson Mortuary. The family plans to conduct a memorial service sometime during the summer of 1998; those arrangements are pending.

Raymond J. Kramer

KALISPELL - Raymond J. Kramer, 74, died Thursday, Jan. 1, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife Jean at the family home in the Lake Blaine area; two sons, Terry R. Kramer of Kalispell and Keith K. Kramer of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery in Kalispell. Elders from the Bigfork Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will officiate.

Arrangements are by the Johnson Mortuary & Crematory.

Robert L. Rice

TROY - Robert Lyle Rice, 72, died Sunday morning, Jan. 4, at his home in Troy.

Survivors include sons Larry and Dale, both of Spokane, and Jerry of Troy; daughters Teresa Koehler of Peoria, Ariz., and Donna Williams of Yachats, Ore.; sister Violet Cummings of Libby; brothers Howard Rice of Troy, Lawrence Rice of Colorado Springs, Colo., Dale Rice of Symrna, Tenn., and Wally Rice of Lawrenceville, Ill.; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and his loving companion, Evelyn Nelson of Troy.

Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Friday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home in Libby.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Troy Church of God. Burial with military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be at Milnor Lake Cemetery.
