Clement Wray Hutchin

POLSON - Clement Wray Hutchin passed away at his home on Panorama Drive in Polson on Jan. 16, 1999. He was born Aug. 18, 1928, in Polson to Clement and Rose Hutchin.

He attended Polson schools, graduating from Polson High School in 1948.

On Sept. 26, 1948, he married Helen G. McDonald of Ronan in the Polson Christian Church. They remained happily married for 50 years.

He is survived by his wife Helen; two sons and four grandchildren, Michael Wray Hutchin of Polson, his companion Patricia Cook, and Mike's son KC Wray Hutchin and wife Melissa of Kalispell; and his second son, Roy Hutchin, wife Toren and their children Madison, Logan and Orion of Kalispell. Wray is also survived by his nephew Gary Riebe of Polson and other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Alfred M. Wendt of Richmond, Va., and sister Edith Taylor of Polson.

After high school Wray worked at the sawmill where the KwaTaqNuk Resort now sits. In 1957 he went to work for the Lake County Road Department and did so until his retirement 33 years later in 1990. He also served as a volunteer for the Polson city and rural fire departments for 25 years.

Wray was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt for ducks, geese and all big-game animals, especially the elusive elk. He also was an avid fisherman. He spent many summer weekends camping and fishing and hunting in the fall with his family.

Wray also was a local square dance caller, calling dances in the '60s and '70s throughout western Montana and Canada.

Retirement for Wray was being in the mountains near Saltese. Six to seven months of the year he enjoyed four-wheeling, bird and animal watching, huckleberry picking, clearing trails, visiting neighbors and entertaining family.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Grogan Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerry Ouellette officiating.

Sister Mary Carmel

SPOKANE - Sister Mary Carmel, S.P., 91, died Jan. 16, 1999, at Mount St. Joseph in Spokane.

Born Leona Marie Huls in San Francisco, she graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Missoula in 1925. She later taught in every grade, kindergarten through college, including assignments at St. Francis Xavier School in Missoula from 1936 to 1937 and Sacred Heart Academy 1946-47, 1951-57 and 1965-74.

She is survived by her cousins, Dr. John and Betsy Guyer of Duarte, Calif., June Eberhard of Oakland, Calif., Wilma Cole and Jerry Kamrath, both of Spanaway, Wash., and the Rev. Janet Guyer of Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mount St. Joseph, followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Sisters of Providence Retirement Fund, 9 E. Ninth Ave., Spokane, Wash. 99202.

Samuel B. Lefthand

ELMO - Samuel Baptist Lefthand, 77, of Elmo, passed away Jan. 16, 1999, at his home from natural causes.

He was born May 11, 1921, in Niarada to Basil Lefthand and Coomsah Morigeau Lefthand. Sam grew up in the Niarada and Elmo areas, and attended schools in Hot Springs.

Sam was a construction worker throughout his younger years. He worked on Highway 2 and the railroads throughout northwest Montana. He had also worked as an electrician and woodsman.

Sam loved music and was an accomplished guitarist and musician. In his early years, he had a radio spot with a Kalispell radio station.

Sam married Rose Andrews and they had two children together.

He is survived by his children, Eugene Lefthand of Ronan and Ann Marie Lefthand of Richmond, Calif.; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sisters Theresa Lefthand and Mary (Pooyah) Lefthand of Hot Springs, Sarah Bufton of Big Arm, Amelia (Merle) Clairmont and Diane Finley of Ronan, Anistasia (Ruby) Burke of Wellpinit, Wash., and SuSan Dowdell of Polson; brothers Nick Lefthand and Basil Lefthand Jr., both of Niarada, Vic Lefthand of Elmo and August Lefthand of Polson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Wake services began Sunday evening at the Elmo Hall, where a rosary service will be held 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Elmo Hall with burial at Dayton Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Grogan Funeral Home of Polson.

Marvin C. Wetzsteon

SULA - Marvin C. Wetzsteon, 65, of Sula, a lifelong rancher, died Friday, Jan. 15, at his residence following a long battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.

He was born on April 3, 1933, in Hamilton, the son of William R. and Cary Tessier Wetzsteon. He attended school in Darby and Hamilton, graduating from Hamilton High School in 1951.

On June 17, 1960, he married Betty Jean Chapman in Missoula.

Marvin grew up and spent his entire life in Sula on the family ranch. He loved the ranch and the outdoors, and was known for rarely "going to town."

He was known as one of the truly good people of the community, always willing to lend a helping hand to neighbors. He shared his knowledge as cowman, horseman, packer, mechanic, forester, sawyer and outdoorsman. He shared the benefits of the ranch, cutting firewood and lumber for neighbors, providing his time and equipment when someone needed help with a project, and allowing access on the ranch for hunters. He spent a number of years as an outfitter and packer, developing many lifelong friendships among his hunting clients.

His community service included logging the trees and construction of the Sula Clubhouse, chief of the Sula Volunteer Fire Department and search and rescue of lost hunters because of his knowledge of the area.

Survivors include his wife Betty of the family home in Sula; two sons, Brian and his wife Jackie and grandson Benjamin of West Linn, Ore., Bob and his wife Susan and granddaughters Alyssa and Rachel of Sula; his mother, Cary Dunbar of Hamilton; and his brother, William A. Wetzsteon of Hamilton.

He was preceded in death by his father William R. Wetzsteon.

A service to celebrate Marvin's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton with the Rev. Stephen Millar officiating. A reception will follow at 2 p.m. at the Sula Clubhouse. Private family urn placement will take place at a later date.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent in his name to the Sula Community Clubhouse, Sula, Mont. 59871; or a charity of the donor's choice.

Malven A. Roske

MISSOULA - Malven A. Roske, 89, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at his home in Turah of cancer.

He was born on Feb. 7, 1909, in Salmon, Idaho, to John and Minnie Roske. He was raised and educated in Salmon until age 15 when his family moved to Columbia Falls. He moved to Ronan when he was 18 and lived there for the next 10 years.

On Dec. 7, 1938, he married Ruby Mae Hedges in Kalispell. The couple moved to Park City, where Mal worked as a carpenter and farmer until 1955. They then moved to Pine Grove and then settled in Turah in 1962.

He was a member of the Carpenters union. His hobbies included dancing and working with horses.

Mal was a man of few words, but always had a twinkle in his eye; he was a proud man who carried himself with dignity. You couldn't miss him in a crowd; he was that well-dressed cowboy with his hat tipped to the right at a rakish angle. He loved to step out on a Saturday night driving his Ford pickup to the nearest country-western dance and gliding across the floor doing his graceful two-step. Follow the trail, Grandpa; keep the fire burning and we will be there.

Mal was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Fay, son John Ronald Roske, great-grandson Joseph Roske, and his sister Dorothy Fifield. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruby; two children, Rita L. Swartz and her husband, Dick, of Judith Gap; and Richard Roske and his wife, Shannon, of Turah; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Garden City Funeral Home. A reception will follow in the funeral home's community room.

The family suggests memorials to Partners in Home Care, 500 N. Higgins Ave., Missoula, Mont. 59802; or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 3914, Missoula, Mont. 59806.

Arrangements are under the care of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.

Donald 'Dee' Holloron

CORVALLIS - Donald "Dee" Holloron, 90, a Bitterroot Valley native and longtime Corvallis-area rancher, died Sunday, Jan. 17, at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Hamilton.

Mr. Holloron was the last surviving member of the original Holloron family that moved to the Bitterroot Valley nearly 100 years ago. He was devoted to his family, friends and neighbors, was active in community affairs and was a resolute voice for the causes in which he believed.

He was born March 10, 1908, in Corvallis, the 10th of 11 children of the late James and Elizabeth Slagle Holloron. An excellent athlete, he graduated from Corvallis High School in 1928.

On May 25, 1939, he married Ruth Whitlock, a Corvallis school teacher, in Butte. He and his brother Robert operated the family ranch northeast of Corvallis in the Summerdale District well into their 80s, at which time Lee Erickson, a trusted friend and neighbor, rented the land. Robert died last spring.

Dee had been a member of the Corvallis School Board and Daly Ditch Board. He helped form the Corvallis Fire Department and was active for years in the Corvallis Sportsman's Club and as a 4-H leader. He had served as a department superintendent at the Ravalli County Fair.

Survivors include his daughter Kay McArthur of Hamilton; son Jerry Holloron of Seattle; grandson Michael McArthur of Hamilton; granddaughter Kammie McArthur of San Francisco; and five nieces and nephews, Beth Flint of Corvallis; Ned Applebury of Hamilton; Sharon Mesenko and Betty Tichenor, both of Missoula; and Edward Holloron of Rupert, Idaho.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruth, six sisters and four brothers.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Daly-Leach Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Millar officiating.

The family suggests memorials to the Corvallis Cemetery Association or to the Bitter Root Humane Association.

Frances Lovelace Boland

KALISPELL - Frances Lovelace Boland, 86, died Monday, Jan. 18, at Prestige Assisted Living.

She is survived by her husband C. Art Boland of Kalispell; sons Keith Boland and wife, Miriam, of Whitefish; and Jim Boland and wife, Barbara, of Coon Rapids, Iowa; sisters Dorothy Graalmann of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Nancy Thompson of Turlock, Calif.; brother William Koll of Center Hall, Pa.; grandchildren Kimberley Downing, Cindy Boland, Chris Boland, Jessica Boland, Koren Boland and Keith Boland Jr.; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at the funeral home with burial following at Conrad Memorial Cemetery.

Peter Patrick Finley

ST. IGNATIUS - Peter Patrick Finley, 56, passed away from complications of several illnesses on Tuesday, Jan. 12, in Burley, Idaho.

He was born Feb. 26, 1942, to Josephine LaMoose and Patrick Finley. A member of the Salish Tribe, Pete lived in St. Ignatius until recently, when his medical treatment required him to move to Idaho for care.

He was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed spending time with his grandsons Stephen and J.J.

Survivors include his sons, Alex of Ronan and Peter Jr. of Oregon; daughters Tanya and Trena of Evaro; Daysha of Ronan; and Erika LaMoose of Ronan; sisters Patricia Arron of Orofino, Idaho; Sally White of Washington, D.C.; Henrietta Brown of Worley, Idaho; and Hariette Finley of Arlee; brother Kenneth Burland of Texas; stepmother Lucy Finley of Worley; stepbrother Eli Nomee and stepsister Marion Nomee, both of Worley; 11 grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Because of the nature of his illness, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Salish Longhouse in St. Ignatius. A memorial dinner will follow.

Sylvia Anna Landon Taylor Glidden

EVERGREEN - Sylvia Anna Landon Taylor Glidden, 51, died Sunday, Jan. 17, at her home in Evergreen.

Survivors include her husband William Glidden of Kalispell; daughter Launa and husband, Keith Shepard, of Kalispell; son Ricky and wife, Heather Taylor, of Libiby; grandchildren Tyler, Katie and Libby Shepard, all of Kalispell; and Quinn, Tucker and Maddie Taylor, all of Libby; stepdaughter Angie Jean Glidden of Kennewick, Wash.; stepgrandchildren Jerricka, Grant and Hannah Glidden, all of Kennewick; brothers Roy and Don Landon, both of Kalispell, and Marvin, Jim and Frank, all of Oregon; and sisters Nadine Christie and Grace Walters, both of Kalispell.

Visitation will be 1-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20. Burial will follow at Glacier Memorial Gardens.

Robert C. Manthey

COLUMBIA FALLS - Robert C. Manthey, 72, died of cancer Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife Rebecca A. Manthey of Columbia Falls; daughter Constance J. McMahan, her husband, Kevin, and children, Shawna and Curtis, of Dallas, Texas; three sons, Davis C. Manthey, his wife, Linda, and children, Michael, Joseph, Daniel and Samuel of Spokane; James P. Manthey of Huntsville, Ala.; and Thomas C. Manthey and wife, Paula, of Casper, Wyo.; brother Maurice Manthey and wife, Dottie, of Cathedral City, Calif.; and two sisters, Ellen Jean Haley and husband, Roy, of Portland, Ore., and Katherine Holm and husband, Carl, of Bella Vista, Ark.

A wake service is 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at St. Richard's Catholic Church.

A memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the church followed by inurnment at St. Richard's Catholic Cemetery.

Rollie Adams

SALMON, Idaho - Funeral services for Rollie Adams, 77, of Salmon, Idaho, will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Faith Bible Chapel. Pastor Greg Middlebrook will officiate.

Rollie passed away Jan. 16, 1999, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula.

Arrangements are by Salmon River Funeral Chapel, 504 Finstur.
