William Frey

William G. "Bill" Frey, 73, passed away at his home in Columbia Falls on Nov. 25, 2004.

He was born March 10, 1931.

He retired from the railroad as an engineer and then owned and operated a business in Columbia Falls.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Kay Frey, of Missoula, and two grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Carolee Kurtz

Carolee Moyer Kurtz, well known Whitefish resident, died at her home in Whitefish on Jan. 31, 2005.

Virginia C. McCaffree

Virginia C. McCaffree, 83, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2006 at Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell.

Bernard Sullivan

Reverend Bernard John "Bud" Sullivan, 85, passed away at The Waterford in Helena on July 30, 2004.

Born in Butte on June 29, 1919, he was the son of Quinn and Kate Murphy Sullivan.

Educated in the Catholic Schools in Butte, he then graduated from Carroll College in Helena and St. Edward's Seminary in Kenmore, Wash.

On June 3, 1944, he was ordained a priest for the Helena Diocese, serving his entire life in Western Montana--Anaconda, Whitehall, Dillon, Helena, Thompson Falls and Columbia Falls. He also was Vicar General of the Helena Diocese from 1978 to 1989. Since his retirement, he resided in Helena. During this time, Father Bud assisted with many parishes throughout the Diocese and enjoyed serving as chaplain for many cruise lines.

Father Sullivan was very instrumental in the construction of many facilities in the Diocese, including Anaconda Central High School, St. Rose Rectory in Dillon and St. Mary's Church and Rectory in Helena.

He was preceded in death by his four brothers, Joseph, Dan, Ray and Fran, and one sister Mary O'Boyle.

He is survived by his sister Margaret and her husband Robert Wedin, of Walnut Creek, Calif.; sisters-in-law Virginia Roberts Sullivan and Caryl Bennie Sullivan, of Butte; nieces and nephews Kathy and Ted Delaney and their children Brian and Beth, of Missoula, Sheila and Paul Cutler and their children Katie, Corey and Marc, of Butte, Tom Sullivan, of Missoula, and Robbie Wedin and Colleen and Wilbur Harden, of California.

A Vigil Service was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, in Helena. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at St. Mary's. The most Reverend George Leo Thomas will preside. Concelebrants will be Archbishop Raymond G. Hunthausen, Father Jack Hunthausen, Father Jack Darragh, Father Jim Connor and cousins Monsignor Joseph Harrington, and Father Scott Connolly of Seattle. Father Connolly will serve as homilist and Gerry Kuhl as deacon.

Burial will take place in the Priests Plot, Resurrection Cemetery, in Helena. Memorials are suggested in Father Sullivan's name to Carroll College Foundation, 1601 North Benton Avenue, Helena MT 59601, or Butte Catholic Education, Nine South Idaho, Butte MT 59701.

John Ebing

John Addison Ebing, 82, passed away Monday, July 26, 2004, at the Montana Veterans Home in Columbia Falls.

John was born Sept. 13, 1921, in Grasmere, Wash., to John Otis and Helen Faye (Siket) Ebing. The family lived in Washington and various places in Alaska, where he grew up and graduated from high school.

He and his dad fished commercially until John joined the Army. He served in the Pacific, and, after World War II, in the Army Reserves, where he trained equipment operators and pilots.

After the Reserves and a couple family jobs, he was running heavy equipment as a crane operator on the Grand Coulee Dam when he met Sylvia Evensen, a medical secretary, in Spokane, Wash. They were married June 28, 1952, and not long after moved to the Flathead. He worked as a crane operator building the Anaconda Aluminum Co. plant, where he worked until retirement in 1982.

John particularly enjoyed the water--fishing, boating, skiing and even building boats. He loved golfing, gadgets and coffee with his friends. He was a lifetime member of the Moose.

John was preceded in death by his wife Sylvia, brother Charlie, sister-in-law Dorothy and his parents.

He is survived by his daughters and their families, Sue Ebing and Jim Zielanski, of Bigfork; Karen and Larry Yerian, of Columbia Falls, and grandsons Paul and Levi Yerian; and a sister and family, Alice and Jack Ferguson, of Roach, Mo.

No services will be held at his request. He has been cremated, and inurnment will be with Sylvia at the Conrad Memorial Cemetery, Kalispell.

Margaret Brown

Margaret J. Brown, 91, of Coram, died at North Valley Hospital Saturday morning July 7, 2001. She was born July 11, 1910 in Tolley North, Dakota the daughter of John and Belle Pautz.

The family moved to Eastern Montana, where she grew up and attended school near Malta.

She received her degree in teaching from Montana State University. On June 4, 1932, she and Rex Brown were married in Malta. They came to the Flathead on their honeymoon and decided to remain in the area. Rex was employed by the railroad, and she taught at various schools. They later formed their own lumber and logging company. in Coram. She became in charge of bookkeeping and sales. They became involved with the raising of purebred Arabian Horses in the 1960s. This was a dream come true for her and a life-long passion. She was a charter member of the local Arabian Horse Club. She also loved and collected western art work.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Alfred William and James, her sisters Violet and Lily, and her husband Rex, in 1971.

She is survived by her sister Roseanita; her daughter and son-in-law Erna and Larry Fortin of Coram; her grandsons David and Brian Fortin of Coram; her granddaughter Shelley Maguire, also of Coram, along with four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Thursday July 12 at the Columbia Mortuary of Columbia Falls. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Robert Fuller

Robert W. "Mr. Bob" Fuller, 70, died July 5, 2001, at the Brendan House.

He was born Aug. 17, 1930, in Eureka to James E. and Cora (Wood) Fuller.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter Alison Keene; son, Michael, all of Kalispell; brother Edward Fuller of Eureka; four granddaughters, Spring Keene, Stormy Fuller, and twins Jenny and Beth Hawkins, all of Kalispell, and numerous other relatives.

A celebration of his life was held at the Fuller family home in Kalispell on July 10.

Gary Gustafson

Gary D. Gustafson, 43, died July 4, 2001, at his home in Kalispell.

He was born in Shelby on Aug. 4, 1957, and resided in Sunburst.

While attending school in Sunburst, he achieved Life Scout and received the Order of the Arrow at the Boy Scout National Jamboree in Ferris Park, Idaho.

He moved to Whitefish in 1974 where he met his wife-to-be, Tammy Cusick, and graduated from Whitefish High School in 1975. He and Tammy were married June 21, 1980, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Kalispell. Later that same year he went to work in Williston, N.D., at Tractor and Equipment as a sales representative.

Their first child was born in 1981 and he worked at Tractor and Equipment until 1985 when their second child Samantha was born. The family moved back to Kalispell in 1986 where he worked for Long Machinery. He worked for Long Machinery for one year when he suffered a back injury and went to work for Moovie Club.

In the 1990s he purchased his own business, Montana West Distributing. He owned and operated the business, working as a wholesale distributor servicing convenience stores mainly to the Great Falls area, but also almost every other part of Eastern and Western Montana until his death.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers Patrick Sanderson and William Gustafon; grandmothers, Alice and Maime; aunt Tookie, and father-in-law Jack Cusick.

He is survived by wife Tammy; son Dustin, and daughter Samantha of Kalispell; parents Don and Zoe Gustafson of Whitefish, Mickey and Mary Pat Kimmet of Shelby; brothers Tim and wife, Tracy, Tommy and wife, Lauri, Eric, and Patrick; sister Lori, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mass of Christian Burial was held July 6, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with Father Vic Langhans as Celebrant. Cremation has taken place.

Zella Nordtome

Zella M. Nordtome, 79, died July 5, 2001, at the Brendan House in Kalispell.

She was born on Oct. 13, 1921, in Minor, N.D., to Les and Dessie Kauffman.

When she was five years old, the family moved to Kalispell. She attended Kalispell public schools, graduating in 1939.

On Oct. 15, 1939, she married Kenneth Nordtome. To this union two children were born, Jim and Joan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Les and Dessie Kauffman, and a sister Flossie.

She is survived by one son, Jim Nordtome and his wife, Barbara of Kalispell; one daughter, Joan Dykstra, and her husband, Ted, of Kalispell; four grandsons; one granddaughter; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Eloise Young and her husband Charles of Salem, Ore., and many relatives and friends.

Funeral service was held July 10 at Johnson Mortuary Chapel.

Roger Poston

Roger Lee Poston, 72, died July 6, 2001, at Heritage Place in Kalispell.

He was born Sept. 7, 1928, in Kalispell to Herbert and Alice (Kinshella) Poston.

He attended school in Flathead Valley until he joined the U.S. Marine Corps on Sept. 12, 1945. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps until Sept. 11, 1949.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Kalispell; son, Ray and wife, Karen Poston, of Elma, Wash.; daughter, Patricia Ruth and husband, Gary, of Dillon; sisters, Claire and husband, Ralph O'Quinn of Snohomish, Wash., Lesley Reid of East Helena; five grandchildren, Amanda Poston of Rancho Cordova, Calif., Jeff and wife, Michelle Poston of Shelton, Wash., Sarah, Lydia, and Luke Mild of Dillon; great-grandson Brycen Poston of Shelton, Wash., and nieces and nephews.

Private urn burial was held at Conrad Memorial Cemetery.

Jo Cover

Jo (Josephine) Cover, 95, passed away Sunday morning, March 31, 2002, at the North Valley Extended Care Unit in Whitefish.

She was born Dec. 17, 1905, in Gordon, Neb., the daughter of William and Carolyn (Winters) Gardner.

Jo was educated in Gordon, Chadron and Omaha, Neb. She married Leslie Cover in 1926. They moved to Whitefish in 1945 where Leslie was with the Whitefish Police Department. Leslie preceded her in death in 1956. Jo was then employed with Snappy Foods in Whitefish for several years, and later, in 1959, she was employed with First National Bank as a bookkeeper, retiring in 1970.

Jo was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile Tirzah Temple. She was a dedicated supporter of all Whitefish school activities, attending almost all home Bulldog football and basketball games for many years.

She is survived by her niece Nellie Nielson along with three other nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be conducted at the United Methodist Church of Whitefish at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2002. Graveside committal of ashes will follow at the Whitefish City Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Austin Funeral Home of Whitefish.
