Ruth Guinard

Ruth Iola Sykes Guinard, 94, took her final walk with the Lord to her heavenly home on April 10, 2003.
She was born on Aug. 9, 1908, near Wilton, N.D., to Walter H. and Lena Edna (Gardner) Kramer.
She came to Kalispell with her parents in 1910. Her parents homesteaded on the Flathead Indian Reservation, Irving Flats, west of Polson in about 1911. She grew up and attended the Green Mountain School, located on her father's homestead, until the sixth grade. They moved to Polson, where she attended school for two years. Her parents then moved back to the Kalispell area, and she attended the eighth grade in Patrick Creek, south of Kalispell. When she was to begin high school, they moved to Kalispell, where she attended Flathead County High School, graduating in May 1927.
On June 15, 1926, she married Raymond Sykes in Troy. She attended her senior year of high school as Ruth Sykes. To this union she had two daughters, Iola, born Oct. 13, 1928, and Edna, born May 28, 1930. She and Ray were divorced in 1931 and she was granted full custody of the two girls and devoted her life to raising them.
She worked at a number of different occupations, such as being an abstractor 17 years for the Commercial Abstract and Title Co., for F. O. Williams, former mayor. She went to work for James E. Murphy, attorney, as his legal secretary, and for his partner, Cal Robinson, for whom she was his first secretary, for approximately five years. Ill health prompted her to resign and rest a while. She worked for short periods at several real estate offices and for KGEZ radio. She then accepted a position with the Montana State Forestry Division in Kalispell as their office manager and worked there for over 20 years, retiring in 1977.
On Nov. 3, 1945, she married her best friend and love of her life, P. D. "Frenchie" Guinard.
She was very active as a Head Start volunteer grandmother for nearly 20 years, and up until about a month before her death as a volunteer with her daughter Edna for MOMS as a nursery worker. She was also active in TOPS, from which she received several awards. She was featured on a Norms's News menu several years ago. She loved children, and over the course of her lifetime she gave her heart, love and support to many young people. She loved her family and all of her extended families, and gave generously of her love and wise counsel. She loved family gatherings and the outdoors, including walking, exploring back roads, hunting, her garden, watching the black swans at Woodland Park, helicopter rides with Jim Kruger and time at her "Happy Place," her cabin at Ashley Lake. She was a great listener and, as all who knew her can attest, there is no way to document her life or the lives of all those she touched. She leaves a very empty place in our hearts.

Over the next 80 years, she attended schools, taught school, married and raised her family here in the Flathead Valley, never losing her awe and appreciation of the valley's beauty. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a nurturing homemaker and a very happy grandmother and great grandmother.
Her 1934 marriage to Fred Johnson was cut short after only five months when Fred drowned in Glacier National Park. On May 27, 1937, she married Lawrence T. Larson, and they enjoyed 60 years together until Lawrence's death in June 1997. To their union were born four sons who now survive her, L. Peter Larson and his wife, Donna, Paul H. Larson and his wife, Mary, and Kurt Larson and his wife, Carol, all of Kalispell; her son, Jon S. Larson, of Sacramento, Calif.; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
It was Helen's express wish that no public funeral be held on her behalf. Instead, she suggested that the family gather together to reflect on their extraordinary blessings and opportunities and to reaffirm the family bonds and values that had been such an important part of her focus in life.
