Francis ‘Frank' Hursh, 87

OWATONNA, Minn. — Francis "Frank" William Hursh died Monday at the Cedarview Nursing Home in Owatonna, Minnesota.

He was born on Oct. 4, 1916, in Osceola, Mo., the son of Lynn and Rebecca (Riddle) Hursh. On Aug. 3, 1942 he married Lois Aubertin in Butte. During World War II, Frank was a captain in the Army Air Corp and was stationed in England for two years.

Frank is survived by his wife; two sons, Arthur Hursh and wife Karen, Fenton, Mich., and William Hursh, Minneapolis; brothers, Dale Hursh, Owatonna, Wayne Hursh and wife Frances, Waseca, Minn., Robert Hursh and wife Jean, Hayfork, Calif., Bill Hursh, Anaconda, and Kenneth Hursh, Wise River; sister, Lynn Corbett; granddaughters, Dawn Jantz and husband R. Jay, Heather Rensi and husband Ed, Misty Kelsey and husband Bill; great-grandsons, Kyler Jantz, Alex and Aiden Rensi; and great-granddaughter, Marissa Kelsey.

Private family graveside interment services for Frank will be held in the family plot of Upper Hill Cemetery with military honors presented by the Anaconda American Legion Color Guard. Funeral services were held in Owatonna, Minnesota Friday.

Local services are under the care of the KT Riddle Funeral Homes, Anaconda.

Alyce Brooke, 80

PONY — Alyce Brooke died in the early morning hours of Wednesday at her son Paul Brooke's home in Idaho Falls following a brief illness.

Alyce was the youngest of 10 children born to William and Margaret (Kelm) O'Connor on Jan. 6, 1924, in Curlew, Iowa. Her parents moved back to Wibaux in 1930 where they endured the hardships of eastern Montana homesteaders.

She boarded in Wibaux and graduated from high school in 1943. She fulfilled her ambition to become a registered nurse by graduating from Presentation School of Nursing in Miles City in 1946. Her first job was at the hospital in Whitehall working nights. During this time she met Cornelius Brooke and they were married on June 1, 1949. Together they celebrated 55 years in the Pony area, where they operated the family ranch and raised six children. Alyce worked until 1990 as a nurse in the Pony area where she provided geriatric and hospice care with a commitment to helping her neighbors remain in their own homes.

In 1989, the Montana Mothers Association elected her Mother of the Year. She treasured the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. She was proud to be a ranch wife and loved making a home for her family and being a welcoming host to family and friends. She was instrumental in establishing Girl and Boys State for the area and the Harrison Clinic. She was a member of the hobby club, Continental Club, home demonstration, PTA, pinochle, quilting and was the 4-H sewing leader for more than a decade. She was also a charter member of the Hollowtop Senior Center.

Alyce was preceded in death by her parents; all of her siblings; granddaughter, Jacqueline Brooke; and son-in-law, Monte Ballou.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Mary Margaret Brooke of Helena; her sons, Paul Brooke, Idaho Falls; Daniel Brooke (Theresa), Miles City; Lawrence Brooke (Joan), Pony; William Brooke (Susan), Bozeman, Shawn Brooke, Pony; and 12 grandchildren.

Wake and visitation for Alyce Brooke will be Thursday from to 1 to 8 p.m. at the Brooke Family Residence in Pony. Visitation and wake will continue 5 p.m. Friday at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Whitehall with the Rosary at 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Church with the Rev. Dan Driscoll as celebrant. Interment will follow at the Pony Cemetery.

Services have been entrusted to KT Riddle Funeral Home, Anaconda.

Memorials: the Harrison Clinic, the Hollow Top Senior Center or to a charity of one's choice.

Barbara Ann Sheriff, 64

Barbara Ann Sheriff, died Saturday following a brief illness while a resident of BSW Barsanti Home in Butte where she was affectionately known as "The Princess".

Barbara was the older of two children born to Raleigh and Anne Sheriff in Helena on Sept. 30, 1939. At the age of 9, she moved to Boulder River School and Hospital. She then relocated to Eastmont in Glendive and most recently resided in Butte.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; uncle, Tony Niklas, of Helena; aunt and uncle, Bertha and Archie Williamson of Olympia, Washington.

She is survived by her sister, Bonnie Sheriff, of Dillon; aunt, Charlotte Niklas, of Helena; cousins, Dave (Colleen) Niklas of Helena, Gary (Marilyn) Niklas of Seeley Lake and Robert (Betty) Williamson of Olympia, Wash.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be conducted today at 1 p.m. at Resurrection Cemetery.

Memorials: donor's choice.

Services have been entrusted to Hagler-Anderson Funeral Home.

Lawrence Babich, 62

Lawrence "Larry" Joel Babich, 62, died Sept. 13 in Portland, Ore.

He was born May 5, 1942, in Butte to Nick and Ellen Babich. He was a graduate of Butte High School and Montana State University, with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering.

He married Sherann "Sherry" McNeil in Idaho Falls, Idaho, on June 3, 1965.

After serving 30 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Bozeman and several other places, the couple returned to Vancouver, Wash., and he retired in 1998.

Larry was a member of the Vancouver Harley Owner's Group.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Sherry; daughter Lisa Babich of Vancouver; son and daughter-in-law Nick (Chris) Babich of Vancouver; daughter and son-in-law Dianna (Brett) Bible of Vancouver; brother and sister-in-law Sam and Aletha Babich of Butte; sister Nickola West of Oklahoma City; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Capt. Ronald Babich of the U.S. Marine Corps.

A memorial service was held Sept. 16 in Vancouver.

Memorials: American Cancer Society or to Our Lady of the Rockies Foundation.

Kenneth Cadieux, 66

Kenneth Richard Cadieux, 66, died Saturday at Barrett Memorial Hospital in Dillon.

Ken grew up in the Anaconda area, he served with honors in the Air Force and worked as a master burner for a large forklift manufacturing company in Oregon. In 1995, he moved to Dillon, where he later suffered a stroke and was cared for by a dear friend, Linda Martin. For the past 2˝ years, he resided at Park View Acres Care Center in Dillon.

Ken will be missed by many and remembered for his warm personality, his interest in athletics and his athletic ability. In his Anaconda days, Ken always had a desire to welcome and serve his fellow man.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Leonard and Rose Cadieux.

His survivors include two daughters, Carla Farnsworth and Kyla Cadieux both of Portland, Ore.; two sons, Kevin Cadieux of Portland and Mark Haubrich of Anaconda; brother Richard Cadieux, a longtime resident of Dillon and retired Beaver-head County High School teacher; sister Debbie Cadieux of St. Ignatius, and a wonderful friend, Linda Martin.

Ken loved and supported Little League in Oregon for many years and his family is planning private services there at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Stella W. Currie, 75

Stella Currie, 75, died peacefully Friday morning at the Community Hospital of Anaconda after a long lingering illness.

Stella Wilmona was born on Dec. 26, 1928, in Anaconda, the daughter of William H. and Loretta A. (La Vallee) Currie. She was educated at St. Peters Catholic school, graduated from St. Peters Central High School in 1946.

Stella worked as a telephone operator until 1952. She enlisted in the Navy in 1952 and served until 1956. She attended Western Montana College in Dillon and received a teaching degree in 1959. She returned to Anaconda and taught in different schools within the school district until she became a principal in 1972. She was the principal at Beaver Dam, Dwyer Primary, Dwyer Intermediate and Lincoln, retiring in 1989.

She volunteered for many years at the PCA/Family Enrichment center, coordinating the VISTA program for three years before her health forced her into retirement.

Stella was a gifted painter and did beautiful arts and crafts. She also did quilting, sewing and gardening. Her backyard was full of beautiful flowers, and it was there that she spent many hours. Stella was an intelligent, independent person, she had several inventions that she never took patents on. Stella was a member of the Anaconda Catholic Community.

Survivors include two brothers and a sister-in-law, Charles Currie of Long Beach, Calif., and Bob and Cle Currie of Woodburn, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews, including David Clark of Anaconda; great-niece Rachel M. Clark of Opportunity and her children Brandon, Jade, and McKiayah; and longtime friends Judy Jones and Eileen Everett; and Stella's loyal companions, her dogs Dude and Sprite.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Mary Currie, who died July 26, and Loretta Clark, sister-in-law Marion Currie and three other siblings who died in their infancy.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated from St. Peters Catholic Church with Father Gregory Burke and Father Jeff Benusa as co-celebrants. The will be no wake or vigil. Upon her wish, her body was donated to the WAMI Medical Education Program, Montana State University.

Services and body donation arrangements are under the care of the KT Riddle Funeral Homes of Anaconda.

Memorial donations are requested to Family Enrichment/PCA or Pintler Pets Humane Society.

Joe Kennedy, 72

BILLINGS — Joe Kennedy, 72, died peacefully Saturday with his family at his side.

At the time of his death, he was a resident in the Dementia Care Unit of St. John's Nursing Home.

Joseph Peter was born on Dec. 1, 1931, to Peter and Marie (Leary) Kennedy. He attended St. Lawrence School and Butte Central High School, graduating from Butte Central in 1950. In 1951, he enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Henrico. He was honorably discharged in 1954 with the Korean Service Medal and three other medals of service.

Joe married Kathleen Ann Kelly on May 5, 1956, and together they had four children. Joe continued to live in Butte and worked for the Anaconda Mining Co. until in 1968, moving to Billings, where he began a 26-year career as a plant operator for the Montana Power Co. before retiring in 1994. His retirement years were filled with quality time with his grandchildren, traveling to visit family and working for a short time at Target.

Joe had a strong love of life and family. He was very proud of his 11 grandchildren, his latest grandson being born just days before his death. He was ever present at grandkids' school and athletic activities. He was an active member of St. Pius Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, serving as the Grand Knight. Joe's spiritual commitment was an important part of his life, participating in prayer circles and visiting the homebound.

Joe was very proud of his Irish roots and of growing up in Butte. He reveled at having the opportunity of traveling to Ireland. Always ready to lend a hand, Joe was instilled with a solid work ethic, a strong moral character, and a fantastic sense of humor. This was expressed at family gatherings where Joe would amuse us with stories of antics with his brothers, the Shea and Leary cousins, and good neighbors from Butte's ‘good ol' days.'

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents Marie and Peter, his sister Delores (Dodie) Rolando, and his niece Connie Jo Kennedy.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Kathy; son Larry (Teresa Kozak) Kennedy; daughters Lynne ( Edward) Gillig, Kathy ( Darren) Brockel, all of Billings; son Patrick (& Tara Cloninger) Kennedy of Vancouver, Wash.; 11 grandchildren: Devin, Sarah and Grace Kennedy, Cody and Landry Brockel, Edward and Paul Gillig, Taylor, McKenzie, Bailey and Sean Patrick Kennedy; sister Mildred Fleiner of Helena; brothers Mike (Donna) Kennedy of Forsyth and Jack (Phyllis) Kennedy of Wisconsin; and his many many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to extend a thank you to the helpful nurses and staff at St. John's and Dr. Frank Michels for his care.

Vigil services will be held at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary on Thursday Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. Memorial Mass will be held at St. Pius X Church on Friday at 11 a.m. Memorials may be sent to St. Pius X Church or to the charity of your choice.

Mary Larison, 92

Mary Miller Humphreys Larison, 712 Monroe, a good citizen of her community, died Friday.

"Miller", as she was known to her friends, was born in Henderson, Ky., on April 7, 1912, to the Rev. Llewellyn and Luella Ward Humphreys. She attended Sayre School in Lexington, Ky., graduating in 1930. She attended Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky., graduating cum laude in 1934. From 1935 to 1936 she completed training to become a certified laboratory technician. As a teen living in Georgetown, Ky., she attended the film "Moon over Montana" and afterward vowed that she would one day live there.

She married Lee Hoyt Larison, a prominent Helena and Montana industrialist; co-founder of American Chemet Corporation and Columbia Paint Co., on June 16, 1939, in Mount Horeb Church near Lexington, Ky. Hoyt preceded her in death June 14, 1981. Their son, Hoyt Humphreys Larison (Larry) is currently president of Columbia Paint Co. and chairman of the board of American Chemet.

Since moving to Helena in 1947, Mary was active in St. Peter's Cathedral Episcopal Church as senior warden; member of the Junior Cathedral Guild; Sunday school teacher; acolyte mother; altar guild, and Daughters of the King, a prayer and service organization of the Catholic and Episcopal Church. She served as a Cub Scout den mother; was elected to the Girl Scout Board; a member of the St. Peter's Hospital Association; Parent Teachers' Association of Central School; and Board of Trustees of Helena School District No.1 for two terms (1953-1956, and 1956-1959). She served on the Helena Symphony Board in its early years. She was a member of Chapter O of the P.E.O. Sisterhood; the Oro Fino Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Fortnightly Book Club, Lewis & Clark Republican Women's Club, the Montana Club, Green Meadow Country Club, Helena Navy League, Montana Historical Society, and the Holter Museum of Art. She was also a generous supporter of many arts and charitable organizations in the area.

Survivors include her son, Hoyt Humphreys (Larry) Larison, Spokane, Wash; granddaughter Pamela Sue Larison and husband Kevin Douglass, North Bend, Wash.; granddaughter Mary Lee Larison and husband Doug Turman, Helena; nephew, Bill Shropshire and his wife Harlan, Evanston, Ill., and Helena, Sandra Sue Larison, Sedona, Ariz.; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and great-grandchildren.

Members of her immediate family who preceded her in death include Sue and Basil Owens, Edwin and Susan Humphreys, Nell Humphreys Shropshire and Wallace Shropshire.

Memorial services will he held at the Cathedral of St. Helena Wednesday at 2 p.m.Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Peter's Cathedral, 511 N. Park, Helena, Hospice of St. Peter's Community Hospital or the charity of your choosing. Organizations Mrs. Larison strongly supported include: Habitat for Humanity, God's Love Inc., Helena Food Share, Helena area Red Cross and Salvation Army, Helena Symphony, Holter Museum of Art, Grandstreet Theatre and the Montana Historical Society.
