Maxine Lee
POLSON - Maxine (Meek) Lee, 68, of Polson, died Sept. 5 at her home from cancer. She was born Clara Maxine on Feb. 6, 1932, to Ted and Millie Simmes in Kevin. She grew up and attended schools in Sunburst. She attended nursing school in Great Falls. Maxine married Donald K. Meek in Toole County, Feb. 9. 1952. They had seven children together and they later divorced. She lived in Shelby and raised her children there until 1977. She moved to Coulee Dam, Wash. and lived there two years before moving to Seattle. She lived in Seattle until she moved to Polson in 1986. She loved to fish, play bingo and cards. Maxine loved spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Ted, and one daughter, Donna Kay Meek. She is survived by her mother, Mildred Lubitz of Ronan; six children - Donald Meek of Shelby, Ronald Meek and his wife Caryin of West Covina, Calif., Barbara Caldbeck and her husband Byram of Polson, Candace Meek of Polson; 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sisters - Dorothy Davis of Coulee Dam, Judy Matthews of Orlando, Fla., Theodora Wiegand of Shelby, Joann Simmes of Ronan and Joann Parrent of Seattle, and a brother, Wayne Lubitz of Montana. Friends and family gathered at a dinner reception Sept. 8 in the Flathead Senior Citizens Center in Polson. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements were by Grogan Funeral Home and Crematory of Polson.

Louise Veronica Conko

RONAN - Louise Veronica Adams Conko, 85, of Ronan began her journey home on Friday, May 26, 2000, at her home, surrounded by her family. Louise was born on June 9, 1914, in the Jocko Valley to Pierre and Margaret (Spokane) Adams. She was raised on the Flathead and Coeur d'Alene reservations and was educated at the De Smet and Chemawa boarding schools.

Louise married William Michel Conko, and they made their home at the base of the Mission Mountains until he passed away. She then married Moses Paul and moved to the Ronan area. He preceded her in death in 1978.

Louise was a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Louise was a kind, loyal and loving friend who brought a lot of laughter and joy to those who knew her. As a woman of great knowledge, she enjoyed when people came to visit her at home, sharing secrets like how to make her wonderful fry bread or going driving in her orange-and-white 1972 and then a 1977 Maverick.

Louise enjoyed doing many things, whether it was traveling, sewing, cooking, beadwork, digging bitterroot or picking huckleberries. She always had a big smile on her face.

Also preceding her in death was her sister, Mary "Babe"; a son, Anthony Paul; two daughters, PeeWee and Mary Agnes, and her beloved dog, Teenie. She is survived by three sons: John Conko and Eneas Conko of St. Ignatius, and Harold Paul of Ronan; three daughters: Ellen Hendrickx, Millie Camel and Margaret Conko Friedlander, all of Ronan; her brother, Francis Adams of Worley, Idaho; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.

Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated May 30 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Mission in De Smet, Idaho, with Father Connelly as celebrant.

Burial followed in the Worley (Idaho) Cemetery. A dinner at the Worley Community Center followed the interment.

Arrangements were under the care and direction of Foster and Durgeloh Funeral Home of St. Ignatius.

Grace Bingham

CHARLO - Grace Hendrickson Bingham, 86, of Charlo died of natural causes May 27, 2000, in the Village Health Care Center, Missoula. She was born Nov. 12, 1913, in Anaconda to James and Mattie Hendrickson. She spent part of her life in Deer Lodge before moving to Charlo.

Grace graduated from Charlo High School and later married Glen Bingham. For many years they lived on a farm just east of Charlo where Grace enjoyed cooking, gardening and raising her family.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Hendrickson, and a sister, Gwen Phibbs.

Surviving are her husband, Glen Bingham of Charlo, and three daughters - Margy Snow of American Fork, Utah, Connie Wright of Missoula, and Nancy Maruji of Colville, Wash. She is also survived and greatly loved by 13 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held May 31 at the Ronan Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she was an active member. A viewing was held prior to the funeral. Burial was at Ronan Cemetery.

Shrider's Mortuary in Ronan assisted the family with funeral arrangements.

Marian H. "Pete" Burland

RONAN - Marian H. "Pete" Burland, 85, of Ronan, died of lung cancer at her home on May 25, 2000.

She was born Aug. 19, 1914, in Missoula, the only child of Henry S. and Isabel (Minesinger) Breuninger.

She married Kenneth M. Burland Jan. 18, 1947, in Polson. He preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1981.

She was a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. After high school, she finished her education at Haskell Indian College in Kansas before returning to the Flathead Reservation to work. Marian worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs from February 1934 until 1964. She began working for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes in 1964 and retired in 1983.

She loved the game of golf and watching it on television; she also loved jigsaw and crossword puzzles. She played piano from the 1930's for dances in a tribal member orchestra, and later as part of a duet at senior citizen dinners that she attended. Her memory was still sharp and she could tell people the genealogy of her family. She was born during an era when horses were still used for transportation.

She is survived by two daughters; Francene (John) Burland Kelly and Andrea (Wes) Thomas; a son, Kenneth (Lavonna) Burland; grandchildren Ray and Ken Oschman, Wanda Salomon, Lisa, Sid and Pam Shourds, Alisha, Nicole and Griz Burland; great-grandchildren Brandis Black, Tommy and Brittney Oschman, John and Stefenia Salomon, Marcus Schiele, Justin and Colten Shourds, Dylan Shourds, Scot, Brittney and Tautiana Burland. Rosary services were May 29 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ronan. Mass of the Christian Burial was May 30 at the church. Burial followed at the Burland family cemetery in Ronan.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.

Shrider's Mortuary of Ronan assisted the family with funeral arrangements.

Dr. Joseph Anderson

POLSON - Dr. Joseph (Merlin) Anderson, 86, died May 25, 2000, at his daughter's home in Polson.

A family graveside service was held Friday, May 26. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Junice Miller

BREMERTON, WASH. - Lieutenant Commander Junice Wood Miller, USN (Ret.), 85, died at his home in Bremerton, Wash., on May 19, 2000.

Born in Stevensville on Nov. 21, 1914, and baptized Junius Wood Miller, he enlisted in the Navy in 1935 where, due to a typo on behalf of the Navy which became too hard to correct, the spelling of his first name was changed to Junice.

He worked his way up through the enlisted ranks as a storekeeper and received a commission in the Supply Corps as an ensign. His service to his country took him throughout the world, much of which was served in the Pacific during World War II and the Korean War.

In 1964, he retired from active duty as a lieutenant commander, settling in Bremerton (Chico). In later years he treasured his backyard garden and passing time with old shipmates and newfound friends.

June, as he was affectionately known by all, is survived by his two sons, Master Chief Fire Control Technician (submarines) Thomas Wood Miller, USN (Ret.), who resides in Sterling, Va., and Commander Howard Preston Miller, USN, who resides in Virginia Beach, VA.

Mercedes Guyette Hanson

POLSON - Mercedes Guyette Hanson, 89, of Polson died June 18, 2000, at St. Luke Extended Care Facility in Ronan.

Mercedes was born in Cresco, Iowa, on June 5, 1911, and moved to Perma when she was five years old. Mercedes attended schools in Perma, Thompson Falls, Missoula and Ronan, and graduated from Polson High School in 1929.

She attended Dillon Normal School (now Western Montana College), earning a teaching certificate in 1931. Her first teaching assignment was as a third-grade teacher in St. Ignatius. She also taught in primary grades in Frenchtown, Pablo and Ronan. There she met R.S. "Bob" Hanson, and they were married on June 6, 1938.

She and her husband lived in Billings, Lewistown and in California during the World War II years. They returned to Ronan in 1948 and purchased the Ford dealership. Mercedes loved teaching in the primary grades and served as a substitute teacher for several years. Most recently she and her husband resided in Polson.

Mercedes was active in the Altar Society at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ronan and the American Legion Auxiliary. She also worked at the state legislative sessions in 1967, 1969 and 1971. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, spending several winters in Arizona. She also enjoyed family gatherings at their summer cabin on Flathead Lake.

Mercedes is survived by her husband of 62 years, R.S. "Bob" Hanson of Polson; son and daughter-in-law Rob and JoHanna Hanson of Helena; grandsons Chris and wife Lisa of Butte, Pete and wife Amy Hanson of Redmond, Wash., and Andrew and fiancée Virginia Diaz of Butte. She is also survived by great-grandsons and great-granddaughters Beau and Bailee of Butte and Sarah and Matthew of Redmond, and by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Hib and Sarah Jane Hanson of Polson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ruth Guyette; sister Helen McNeely, and infant son John.

Memorial Mass was held Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ronan, with Father Gary Reller as celebrant. Inurnment followed at the Ronan Cemetery, with arrangements and cremation by Shrider's Mortuary in Ronan.

Memorials may be made to the St. Luke Extended Care Facility, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ronan or to a charity of the donor's choice.
