Rory Ryan, 50

ANACONDA — Rory Kevin Ryan died unexpectedly Thursday morning in St. James Healthcare in Butte. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday in Longfellow Finnegan Funeral Home followed by a wake service at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in Holy Family Church.

Rory was born in Anaconda on July 27, 1954, to John "Pedie" and Mary "Neezie" Ryan. He graduated from Anaconda Central High School in 1972. He was a member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 41.

His family said that Rory was a construction worker's construction worker. He traveled to where the jobs were but always called Montana home. He worked for the last several years in Butte. Rory loved life and lived it to the fullest. There was no one who met him who didn't like him. Rory was an avid golfer and enjoyed car shows. He and his girls, Sarah and Mallory, had very special weekends skiing. Rory spent as much time as he was able with his girls. He would and could do anything for anyone. His wishes, at the time of his death, were for "everyone to tell stories, have good times and party 'til dawn."

He married Lora Wisdom on Feb. 29, 1991, in Columbus. They had two daughters.

Rory was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by Lora and twin daughters, Sarah and Mallory of Absarokee; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marilyn and John Driver of Manhattan, Peggy and Tim Kenny of Goodyear, Ariz., Patti and Tim Flynn of Vancouver, Wash., Robin and Kelly Richards of Anaconda; brothers and sister-in-law, Greg and Kathy Ryan of Vancouver, Wash., Tom Ryan of Missoula, and Todd Ryan of Cape Coral, Fla.; special friend, Tammy Bennett and her son Jimmy; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sylvia V. Gomar, 90

Memorial services for Sylvia V. Gomar will be held in Coquet, Minn., at a later date. Upon her prearranged request, cremation has taken place.

Sylvia died Oct. 31, at the Crest Nursing Home in Butte.

Sylvia was born on May 1, 1914, in Angora, Minn., to Hjalmar and Hilma (Suominen) Sillanpaa. She was raised and educated in Minnesota. She married John Gomar. He died in the early 1970s. Sylvia worked as a waitress her entire life and loved her work, retiring in 2000 at the age of 86. She worked in Chicago, Minneapolis and Lakeworth, Fla. She came to Butte in 2000 from Lakeworth. Sylvia would visit Butte during the summer on an annual basis.

Survivors include her sister, Margaret Berglund of Coquet., several nieces and nephews in Montana and Minnesota; and a sister-in-law, Mae O'Donnell of Butte.

Cremation arrangements were under the care of the KT Riddle Funeral Homes, Anaconda.

Memorials: Salvation Army of Butte.

Robert Abbott, 73

HELENA — Robert "Bob" Bradley Abbott died Thursday after a short battle with cancer.

Bob was born June 8, 1931, in Anaconda to Robert C. and Marian (Fitzpatrick) Abbott. He spent his early childhood in Anaconda before his family moved to Great Falls, where he was active in DeMolay and American Legion Baseball. As a sophomore in high school, his family moved to Kalispell, where Bob earned three varsity letters in football and baseball. He was Flathead County High School's first Key Club president and graduated in 1949.

Bob attended Montana State University in Missoula, majoring in business administration. While in college, he was active in Sigma Nu Fraternity, Bear Paws, Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity, Ski Club (secretary), Reserve Officers Training Corps (cadet colonel), charter member of Arnold Air Society, Scabbard and Blade Military Honor Society, Distinguished Military Graduate and upon graduation was commissioned as second lieutenant in the Air Force in 1953.

While in college Bob met the love of his life, Nonie Brown, while skiing at Big Mountain. Bob and Nonie were married July 5, 1953, in Butte. Nine months later, Bob was called to active duty during the Korean War. He proudly served in the military and was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas; F.E. Warren AFB, Wyoming; Whiteman AFB, Missouri; and Lakenheath Royal Air Force Station, England. He was honorably discharged as a captain in 1955 and then served in the Air Force Reserve. Bob, Nonie, and their first child Bruce moved to Helena where Bob began his career in the insurance industry as a bond underwriter for the USF&G Insurance Co. Bob spent more than 45 years in the industry. He led the entire Lincoln National Life sales force in premium production, worked for the State of Montana's Insurance Commissioner's Office, and was an insurance consultant since 1985. Bob served as president of the Helena Life Underwriters Association, board of directors of the Montana Life Underwriters Association and the Governor's Select Committee on white collar crime.

Bob refereed football and basketball at the high school and college levels for more than 46 years and strived to instill the value of fair play and good sportsmanship in all. He also coached his sons' Orioles and Civitans baseball teams to the City Championship. Bob loved to watch his sons, sporting activities and later enjoyed watching his grandchildren in all their sports. He was also an avid duplicate bridge player.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brother Jim.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, sons, daughters-in-Iaw, and their families, Bruce, Mary, Alaina, and Brian of Billings, Scott of Bozeman, and Doug, Mary, Gwenn, and Dunk of Butte.

Bob's grandchildren will miss their "Papa" and they will always remember playing soccer with him in the front yard and enjoying treats from Papa's Ice Cream Store. Bob/Papa will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison. A reception will immediately follow at American Legion Post 2, 3095 Villard Ave.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Hospice of St. Peter's, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT 59601. Hagler-Anderson Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

Scott Sever, 49

TWIN BRIDGES — Scott Sever of Twin Bridges died Dec. 20 at his residence.

He was born May 10, 1955, at Helena, to Donald and Ruth (Friend) Sever. He was raised and attended school in Basin and later attended school in Boulder. He then entered the Navy. After the service he returned to Montana working on various ranches. He then returned to Boulder, where he worked at the Kyler ranch which later became the Hamilton ranch. As the Hamilton ranch was sold and moved operations to the Twin Bridges area, he moved with them.

His greatest joy was his three children to which he was 100 percent dedicated. He loved hiking with his children, the outdoors, and ranch life. He was an avid reader.

He was preceded in death by his sister Donna Rae McKinney.

He is survived by his children, Kylie, Dan, and Tanner Sever; parents, Donald Sever, Lewiston, Idaho, and Ruth Sever, Medford, Ore.; sisters, Jo Anne (Tim) Campbell, West Yellowstone, Lynda (Melvin) Haghan, Medford, Ore.

Memorials: Sever Children's Trust Fund, c/o Yellowstone Basin Bank, P.O. Box 1810, West Yellowstone, MT 59758.

Memorial service is 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8 in K&L Mortuary Chapel, Twin Bridges, with the Rev. Mary Alice McKinney officiating.

Rudy ‘Skip' Stoll, 72

WHITEHALL — Rudy John "Skip" Stoll of Whitehall died of pancreatic cancer on Saturday at home.

Skip was born July 9, 1932, at St. Ignatius to Rudy and Gertrude Stoll. After graduation from high school in St. Ignatius, he enrolled at the University of Montana, where he graduated with honors in 1955 as part of the first five year pharmacy class. While at the University, Skip was a member of Reserve Officers Training Corps. He later attended basic infantry officers training at Fort Benning, Ga., where he graduated first in his class at the Infantry School. He then served with the 12th Infantry at Fort Lewis, Wash.

Skip and Ilen Egger were married June 18, 1955. They lived in Great Falls, where Skip worked as a pharmacist at Public Drug and Skaggs. The family moved to Bozeman, where he continued to work for Skaggs. In 1975, Skip purchased the Whitehall Drug and managed it four years, then continued his career at Bernie's Pharmacy in Butte before returning to Whitehall once again to manage the Whitehall Drug, where he worked until his retirement.

During the summers of his university years, Skip was a smokejumper for the Missoula Aerial Fire Depot. Upon his retirement, he worked on trail maintenance crews in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Skip was always an active community member wherever he lived. In Great Falls he volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul Society and at St. Peter and Paul School which his children attended. He helped with the Whitehall Food Pantry and Habitat for Humanity projects. He served on the Whitehall Town Council. He also maintained the grounds at St. Teresa's Church for five years. He worked long hours with his wife Ilen on the Whitehall Spring Clean Up Project, Friends of the Library and Democratic Party activities.

Skip's generous spirit will be missed for years to come. There were two seasons for Skip, gardening and football. He maintained a beautiful yard and garden which provided plants for the library's plant sale. Beginning in junior high school in St. Ignatius, Skip cheered for the Grizzlies. He was an avid fan, missing games when only absolutely necessary. His "Go Griz" sign became a fixture on Interstate-90.

In September, Skip entered a clinical trial at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City. He fought hard against his cancer. We will miss him greatly, but send our husband, father, grandfather and friend to be with the Lord.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Ilen Stoll; daughters, Marie Anne (Kim) Hasenkrug, of Victor, Monica (Jeremy) Hauk, Billings; sons, Chris (Janet), Park City, Utah, Greg (Julie), Indianola, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; sister, Rose Marie (Don) Phillips, Missoula; and brother Tom (Larie), Helena.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Theresa Sholey, son Joe and brothers Ray and Jim.

A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in St. Teresa's Catholic Church, Whitehall, with the Rev. Dan Driscoll as celebrant. A Mass of Celebration will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Butte with the Rev. John Robertson as celebrant.

Interment will be held at a later date in the Whitehall Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Stoll Pharmacy Scholarship Fund, c/o Edward Jones, 1303 Harrison Ave., Butte, MT 59701.

Scott Funeral Home in Whitehall is handling arrangements.

Ray Edmisten, 94

SHERIDAN — Ray B. Edmisten of Sheridan died Friday in Tobacco Root Mountain Care Center in Sheridan.

He was born Sept. 16, 1910, at Roone, N.C., to William and Iola (Chritcher) Edmisten. He moved to the Dillon area in 1913 and Ruby Valley in 1916. He attended the Wisconsin Creek School and Sheridan High School, graduating in 1927. He ranched in the Ruby Valley until retiring in 1966. After retiring, he worked at various ranches in southwestern and eastern Montana earning a reputation for his

knowledge and ability in the Livestock industry.

Ray enjoyed his horses and dogs and loved a good rodeo.

He married Gladys E. Mosby Sept. 26, 1942, in Butte.

He was preceded in death by his wife Gladys in Oct. 15, 1999, and brother Donald D. Edmisten.

Survivors include his daughters, Anita Rae Edmisten, Billings, Ruth and David Wade, Craig, Colo.; sons, William and Tris Edmisten, Great Falls, Charles Edmisten, Lima, Jon and Evelyn Edmisten, Whitehall; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorials are preferred to the Tobacco Root Mountain Care Center, or donor's choice.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in K&L Mortuary Chapel, Sheridan, with the Rev. Randy Staley officiating. Interment will follow in the Twin Bridges Cemetery.

Paul Hopkins, 53

HELENA — Paul Jerome Hopkins died Dec. 22. Surrounded by friends and family, Paul's courageous 16 month battle with cancer ended.

Paul was the very loving and easy going son of Jim and Vangie Hopkins of Helena.

His employment record reflected duty as a firefighter for the Tumpane Corp. at Glasgow Air Force Base and as a systems analyst for the former Mountain Bell Telephone Co. of Helena.

Soon after graduation from Helena High School, Paul successfully attained his degree from Kinman Business University in Spokane, Wash.

Paul is best remembered by area sports fans as a very gifted athlete who had a four year successful career with the Helena American Legion Baseball program; where upon he won the prestigious batting crown. Excelling as a pitcher, fielder and batter in both baseball and men's softball; tournament most-valuable-player awards throughout the state bear his name.

His favorite hobbies included bowling, fishing, basketball, jogging and reading a wide array of books and magazines.

Paul was a devoted member of St. John's Catholic Church of Clancy. His love for his fellow man was expressed by his volunteer work with the Montana Association for the Blind and other charitable organizations. Putting aside his own struggle with a bi-polar disorder, Paul found solace in being a loving son, brother and uncle. His special devotion to his concern for his family and immeasurable devotion to his father is testimonial to a man with a kind and loving nature.

Paul was preceded in death by his mother Vangie.

He is survived by his father, Jim Hopkins of Helena; brothers, Dr. Richard Hopkins, David Hopkins and Pat Hopkins; sister, Diane Hamper; numerous nieces and nephews.

Paul will be remembered as a gentle soul by all those whose lives he touched.

A vigil service will be held at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday in Retz Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in East Helena with burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Paul's honor may be made to the John Bird Memorial Blind Fund c/o Del Barnekoff, 5480 N. Montana Ave.; Helena, MT 59602.

Barbara Jones, 65

HELENA — Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Barbara Louise Jones, "Grandma Barb," of Helena died Friday at her home.

Barb was born to George and Virginia Tippett on Feb. 23, 1939, in Butte. Her mother died in 1942 from polio. She attended Emerson Grade School, Butte High School and Montana State University in Missoula, where she received a degree in secondary education. Barb returned to Butte and taught Spanish at Butte High School from 1961 to 1965 and from 1966 to 1967.

Barb married Vernon E. Jones on April 18, 1965, in Butte. After the birth of their second child, Barb retired from teaching to care for her family, which was her true passion in life.

Barb and her family moved from Butte to Missoula in 1969, where she was very involved with her children's activities, including Parent Teacher Association, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Sentinel High School Band Parents. She took a job as the hot lunch hostess at Russell Elementary School in the late 1970s so she could work close to her children. Barb and her family moved in 1988 from Missoula to Helena, where she worked as an attendance clerk at Helena High School until 1998.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents and beloved grandson Will.

She is survived by her husband, Vern; sons and daughters-in-law, Vern and Kathleen Jones, Helena, Gary and Lisa Jones, Butte; daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Tim Van Blaricom, Camby, Ore.; grandchildren, Veronica and Virginia Jones, Rebecca and Jessica Jones and Shawn Van Blaricom.

A private family funeral service will be held at Retz Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday. Cremation will follow the services and placement of her cremated remains will be in Butte at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Shodair Children's Hospital, PO Box 5539, Helena, MT 59604-5539.
