Timothy ‘Nuge’ Nugent, 56

Timothy Edward "Nuge" Nugent died March 9, 2010. He went home Tuesday to be with the Lord after a hard fought battle with ill health.

He was born in Butte Nov. 27, 1953, to Robert and Jeanne (McCarthy) Nugent. He attended St. Ann's Grade School and Boys Central High School before graduating from Butte High School in 1971. While growing up he served as an altar boy at St. Ann's Church and was an avid baseball player, playing both Little League and Babe Ruth ball.

During high school, he worked with his dad at the DRS Paint Shop where he took great pride in his work and did an amazing job painting cars. He later went to work for Stauffer Chemical. He married Kathy Gross on Feb. 14, 1976. Together they had two children and then later divorced.

Tim returned to the paint business for a while and then spent several summers fighting forest fires in various states. After suffering several injuries, he was unable to return to the work force but could always be found helping others by doing odd jobs with his good friend, Bobby Dean Neary.

He enjoyed many things in life - camping, fishing, hunting at the Ruby with his dad, playing softball and collecting various treasures were some of his favorite hobbies.

Tim lived simply and was a man of few words. He took life as it came and truly cherished time spent with his family, friends, and grandchildren. He will sadly be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert; brothers, (baby) Patrick, Thomas, and Dale Nugent; grandparents; and many close friends.

He is survived by his mother, Jeanne; daughter, Cheryl (John) Doyle; son, Marine Corps Cpl. Mark Nugent; grandchildren, Sydney, Riley and Bradey Doyle; sisters, Jacye Freeman, Jill (Don) Shea, Janice Nugent (friend Joe Vukovich); brothers, Dan (Lou), Jeff (Marcy), and Scott Nugent; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 14, in St. Ann's Catholic Church with vigil services to follow at 7 p.m. Liturgy of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday in the church and will proceed to Holy Cross Cemetery for burial.

Memorials and donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Butte Emergency Food Bank, Butte

Sheltered Workshop, or charity of the donor's choice.

"Dad, Papa, Tim, it has broken our hearts to loose you so soon. We hope that you have found peace."

William ‘Bill’ Joseph, 96

William Joseph died March 9, 2010. On Tuesday evening, Bill, surrounded by his family, went to be with God and reunite with those who went before him.

He was born Oct. 2, 1913, to Joseph and Annie (Thomas) Joseph in Butte, the oldest of seven boys.

Bill worked in the shipyards in Portland, Ore., during the war and after losing their son Billy, he and Mabel decided to return to Butte, where they operated the Fruit Basket on Harrison Avenue for 20 years before retiring. Mabel and Bill celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in July.

He enjoyed fishing with his brothers and family and golfing with his friends. He especially enjoyed the time he spent on a bowling team with his brothers at Star Lanes. He was a strong man who always kept going. He was always willing to take a ride when someone invited him. On his 92nd birthday he started saying that he was "92 with nothing to do" and continued saying that for years following.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; son, Billy; and brothers, Johnny, Amil, Ruby and Mike.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mabel; son, Jerry; and daughter, Betty (John) Berryman of Portland; daughter, Wilene (Jim) Lester of Butte; grandchildren, Joe (Tammi) Lester, Jenny (Brian) Hoim, William, Joseph, Dana Joseph and Brad (Ken) Berryman; great-grandchildren, Kara, Bradie, Kadyn, Zach, Kendra, Jack, Caitlyn, Hannah and Myia, as well as one more on the way. Mary Lou Hanson, 72

Mary Lou Hanson died peacefully at her home attended by family on Friday evening, March 12, 2010, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer.

Mary Lou was born in Britton, S.D., on March 5, 1938, to Clarence and Mae (Wickre) Larson. She was the second of their six children and the only surviving daughter.

She grew up in Britton and was baptized and confirmed at the First Methodist Church. She graduated from Britton High School in 1956 and completed the rural teaching program at Northern State Teachers' College in Aberdeen, S.D. While at Northern she was a member of the campus YWCA and a cheerleader and baton twirler.

In August 1957, she purchased a 1949 Ford car but didn't know how to drive. She mastered the shifting fairly well and, when the time came, was able to drive herself 150 miles to a stock farm east of Oneida, S.D., where for the next two years she lived with the Robert Bown family and taught at a one-room rural school.

On Sept. 6, 1959, she and Ron Hanson were married at the First United Methodist Church in Britton. They moved to Brookings, S.D., where Ron was a student at South Dakota State University and she taught at a rural school west of Brookings.

The following summer Mary Lou returned to Britton to stay with Ron's parents to await the birth of their daughter, Krestie, while Ron worked for the Forest Service at Thompson Falls.

In the fall of 1960 the family moved to Logan, Utah, where Ron completed his degree in Forestry at Utah State University. Following Ron's graduation they moved to his first assignment with the Forest Service in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where son, Kurt, was born.

In the fall of 1964, they moved to Osburn, Idaho, where son Kyle joined the family. While in Osburn they became active in the Jaycee's and Mary Lou was named "Key Woman of the Year" for her work on service projects.

In August of 1967 they moved to Kettle Falls, Wash., on the Colville National Forest where son Klark was born three days after they arrived.

While in Kettle Falls, Mary Lou served as leader for the Girl Scouts and enjoyed team teaching a junior high Sunday school class.

In the summer of 1972 the family moved to Darby where they stayed for the next three years. While in Darby skiing became a family pastime with the whole family enjoying frequent weekend outings at Lost Trail Ski Area. During this time Mary Lou also organized and taught a drill-dance team at the school.

In January 1975, the family moved to Butte. After her children were well along in school she moved from a stay-at-home Mom to selling real estate. Though she enjoyed the financial benefits of each sale, her greatest joy was in helping people find a new home.

Throughout her time in Butte, Mary Lou served on the YMCA board and received a Service Award for her work there. Mary Lou was very active in the First Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday school, served as a deacon, was moderator of Presbyterian Women and almost single handedly redecorated the church's Fellowship Hall for the 125th Anniversary of the church. To the end she was as active as her illness permitted.

On Sept. 6, 2009, Mary Lou and Ron celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. This was one of the happiest moments of their life.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister.

She is survived by her husband Ron and her children, Krestie (John) Harwood, Kurt (Kris), Kyle (Cathy) and Klark. Also surviving are four brothers: Marvin, Tim, Dennis and Clarence; 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service, honoring God for the life of Mary Lou, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 18, at the First Presbyterian Church in Butte.

The family of Mary Lou Hanson would like to express the immense gratitude they have for the people of Easter Seals Highlands Hospice. The loving care they provided during Mary Lou's final days was beyond the call of duty.

The family suggests that any Memorial gifts, in Mary Lou's memory, be made to the First Presbyterian Church and/or Easter Seals Highlands Hospice.
