Lillian 'Tinka' DiPasquale

RONAN - Lillian "Tinka" DiPasquale, 85, of Ronan, left this world May 22, 2003. She was born into this world on March 29, 1918, in Tacoma to George and Anna (Morigeau) Weivoda, was raised and attended schools in Ronan.
Tinka's greatest love in life was her family and she took great pride in being a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Her joy and excellence of cooking was renowned not only to family and friends but with the many eating establishments in the Flathead area, and Whitefish.
Most people will remember Tinka for her humor and colorful stories.

Gertrude Van Haverbeke

ST. IGNATIUS - Gertrude Van Haverbeke, 74, of Missoula, formerly of St. Ignatius, went to be with the Lord on May 22, 2003. She was born on Oct. 4, 1928, to Ferdinand and Anna Kantner in Vienna, Austria.
Gertrude met her husband Paul during World War II in Vienna. Irma, their oldest daughter, was born in Vienna and they moved to St. Ignatius after his completion of service.
Gertrude moved to Missoula in 1986 and was a volunteer at St. Patrick Hospital for 10 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son Thomas.
She took great pleasure in having her large family around her.
Gertrude is survived by six of her seven children. Irma and her husband Wayne Michaels of Columbia Falls, Martha Allen of Central Point, Ore., David and Betty Van Haverbeke of Pablo, Merry and husband Pat Kelly of Kalispell, Monica and husband Maury Mills of Polson, Mike Van Haverbeke and wife Julie of Columbia Falls, 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mass of the Resurrection was held May 28, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Funeral arrangements were under the Foster & Durgeloh Funeral Home of St. Ignatius.
The family suggests donations to a memorial of the donor's choice.

Gertrude Lillian Price Stoverud

MISSOULA - Gertrude Lillian Price Stoverud (Trudy), 92, long time Missoula resident, was called home to be with our Lord on May 20, 2003.
Trudy was born Dec. 18, 1910, in Tulsa, Okla., to Frank and Lily Price. She was the second of eight children. She married Osbord B. Stoverud June 17, 1933.
They were looking forward to celebrating their 70th anniversary next month. She was a co-owner and business manager of Stoverud's Jewelers, a family business from 1945 until her retirement.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Women's Home Improvement Club, Altrusa Club, daughters of the Nile, Sons of Norway and the Norwegian Fold Dancers.
She took great joy in being a wife, mother and homemaker and doing both Norwegian folk dancing and ball room dancing, gardening and visiting with family and friends. All who loved and enjoyed her will miss her beautiful spirit.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers and a sister.
Survivors include her loving and devoted husband, Osbord; a son, Brendt and daughter-in-law Brendt and Nancy Stoverud of Missoula; daughter and son-in-law Brenda and Jerry Hogan of Pasco, Wash.; grandchildren including Kristin Stoverud-Myers, Eric Forrer, Tanya Kelly, Karrin Allen, Sonja Lundgren, Michael Sullivan, Kathy Wilson, Kari Staggs and step-granddaughter Rebecca Hogan Meek; her great-grandchildren Demetri Treperinas, Paige Wilson, Lily Wilson, Amber Kelly, Chloe Forrer, Alyssa Lundgren Soren Stoverud-Myers; sisters Della Sartwell of Vancouver, Wash.; Bernice Abel of Centralia, Wash., and Leona Whitworth of Wenatchee, Wash.; sister-in-law Laura Stoverud of Spokane, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were May 23 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Burial was in Missoula Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 202 Brooks, Missoula 59801.

Elmore Somers Smith

POLSON - Elmore Somers Smith, 91, of Polson, died at Evergreen Polson Health and Rehab Center on Sunday, May 25, 2003.
He was born to the Rev. C.E. and Clara Belle Smith on May 2, 1912, in Columbia Falls. His mother was born Sept. 11, 1872, in Clay County, Iowa. His father was born at Dickens, Iowa, April 27, 1871.
Elmore is survived by his wife, Dorothea; brother Everett Smith of Polson; sister Ethyl Harmon of Choteau; daughter Marlene Howell of Moiese; son Gordon Smith of Somers; three grandchildren, Patti Chevallier of Missoula, Rick Howell of Superior and Lynn Fullerton of Cheyenne, Wyo., and seven great- granddaughters.

George Roger Cote

PORTLAND, Ore. - George Roger Cote, 69, died April 30, 2003, at his home in Portland.
Roger, as he was known by his family, was born Dec. 2, 1933, in the Holy Family Hospital in St. Ignatius to Joseph and Mary Cote. He was a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Reservation.
He attended schools in the Mission, including some time in the Ursuline School.
He enlisted in the Marines and was involved in active duty during the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge from the service and returned to Montana.
He lived in Missoula for a short time and there he met his future wife, Janice Jones. They were married in 1957.
The couple moved to Portland and made their home there. They had four children.
In 1961, Roger went to work for the Ray Becker Sheetmetal Company of Portland. During his years thee he supervised the building of many service stations throughout the northwest, including Alaska.
Roger was a natural building and in his spare time spent hours working with his brother Joe on many project, including building seaworthy boats.
Roger is survived by his wife Janice of Portland; three sons, Rick and Robert of Portland and Roger Jr. in Idaho; one daughter, Theresa in Arizona; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joe of Portland and John in Florida; two sisters, Josephine Smith of Missoula and Ann Edwards of Marion, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Beulah of Arlee.
A Catholic memorial service was celebrated in Portland on May 3. A full military funeral was conducted on May 11 at the Willamette Veterans national Cemetery in Portland, where inurnment followed.
Family members noted that "Roger was much loved and will be remembered and missed by family and friends. He was a husband, father, grandfather, and most of all, a true friend.

Travis Allyn Dolphin

POLSON - Travis Allyn Dolphin of Polson passed on to be with the Lord and leagues of angels on May 25, 2003. He lost a courageous seven-year battle with a brain tumor at the age of 34.
Travis was born Sept. 3, 1968, in Loveland, Colo., to Tim and Barb Dolphin. In Jan. 1977, the family moved to Polson, where Travis entered the second grade. While in grade school, he joined Pack 47 of the Cub Scouts and played basketball, football and soccer. In high school, Travis competed at the state tournaments in both basketball and football. In track, Travis won awards in triple jump, high jump, long jump, and the 800 and 1600-meter relays. Travis played soccer between sports seasons. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and Good Shepherd Youth Organization and enjoyed Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp for many summers in his youth.
Travis graduated from Polson High School in 1987 and entered Eastern Oregon State in 1988, earning the most improved freshman basketball player award. In 1995, Travis married Charmagne Gauthier in Hawaii, and their two beautiful children, Kanyan and Scout were born.

Hannah Marie Robinson

ST. IGNATIUS - Hannah Marie Robinson, infant daughter of Jeannie Cordis and Stacy Robinson, died peacefully May 23, 2003, at Community Medical Center in Missoula.
She is survived by her parents and two brothers, James and Robert of the family home. Also surviving are grandparents Roxey and Charlie Cordis of Ronan, Bernie and Wayne Robinson of Riverside, Calif.; great-grandparents Nellie Stokes of Pablo, Philip Kuntz, Elizabeth Reum and Grandma Lois of Ronan; also many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Nothing is harder than the loss of someone we love, perhaps their greater purpose is to love us from above. A private family service was held on Wednesday, May 28 at Pleasant View Cemetery in St. Ignatius.

Debra Karen Finley

POLSON - Debra Karen Finley, 50, of Polson died on Friday, May 23, 2003, at Community Hospital, Missoula.
She was born on May 14, 1953, in Spokane to Leonard Joseph and Nancy (Finley) Joseph.
Debra attended schools at the Ursulines in St. Ignatius, Spokane, Pierre Indian School and at Chilocco, Okla.

Homer George Piedalue

RONAN - Homer George Piedalue died May 20, 2003. He was born Feb. 3, 1928 in Missoula.
Homer resided in Ronan as a rancher with his family until 1980 when they sold the family ranch. For the past four years he resided in Superior.
Homer was preceded in death by his mother, father, a brother and two children, Lyle Homer Piedalue and Shelly Gay Piedalue. He is survived by seven sons, a daughter and a sister: Dana and Terry Piedalue of Butte, Mike, Tim and Dale Piedalue; Chris and Melanie Piedalue, Ryan Piedalue, stepson Tracy and Shirley Burland, daughter Gayla and Jess Lytton, all of Ronan, sister Molly and Bud Allred of Seeley Lake and seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held May 24, in the Mountain View Cemetery. Shrider's Mortuary of Ronan was in charge of the arrangements.

Gertrude M. Pomajevich

SPOKANE - Former Polson resident Gertrude M. Pomajevich, 91, died May 16, 2003, in Spokane.
She was born on Sept. 22, 1911, to Henry and Anna Pissot in Butte, where she was raised and educated.
After working for the federal government in Washington, D.C., during the early 1930s, Gertrude moved to Missoula. She married Roland Felix Nelson in Missoula in 1941. Roland was killed at the end of World War II in Japan.
In 1951 Gert married Matthew Pomajevich in Missoula. They lived there for the next 22 years, retiring in 1973 and moving to Polson, where they lived until moving to Spokane in 1998. Matt died in Spokane in 1999.
Gertrude loved the outdoors ad was an avid walker. She was a small but mighty lady and few could keep up with her brisk pace.
Gert was a loving wife and mother and an active volunteer. She was an asset to all of the communities in which she lived.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands, her parents, three brothers, two sisters, a son and a grandson.
She is survived by her sister Anne Van Sickle of Helena; son Michael Nelson of Spokane; two grandsons, six great-grandchildren, and numerous niece and nephews.
A memorial Mass was celebrated at June 4 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Missoula.
Memorials may be made to Loyola Sacred Heart High School, 320 Edith Street, Missoula 59801.

Thomas James Mitchell

ST. IGNATIUS - Thomas James Mitchell, 55, died May 30, 2003, at St. Luke Hospital, Ronan.
He was born on June 13, 1947, to Harold and Alice Mitchell, the youngest of 10 children. He attended St. Ignatius schools, where he graduated. After graduation he married Ruth Ly Sloan. From that marriage, he had three children: Tom, Shannon and Tammy.
Tom served in the Vietnam War, then returned the Mission Valley to raise his family. He worked in the logging industry until a work injury prevailed. Tom loved being in the mountain, either by himself or with friends and family, looking for the elusive elk (which he always found) or the morel mushroom.
He was a great hunter and great teacher to his boys and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Alice, brothers Wayne, Bob and Alvin, and a sister, Shirley, who died in infancy.
Survivors include his sons Tom (Elly) and their children Brian, Ashley, Kelsie and Kyla, and Shannon (Wendy) and their children Jeremiah, LaGlen and Troy, all of St. Ignatius; daughter, Tammy of Vancouver, Was.; sisters, Joyce, Laurie and Mary Lou; brothers Harold Jr. and Leo, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were held Monday in the Longhouse with military rites. Cremation followed.

Daniel Phillip Escritt

POLSON - Daniel Phillip Escritt, 80, of Proctor died on June 2, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital in Polson from natural causes. He was born Nov. 26, 1922, at Neligh, Neb.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Escritt of Proctor; three daughters, Beth Gaalswyk of Mountain Lake, Minn., Carol Hull of Kalispell, and Roseanne Loseke of Scottsbluff, Neb.; five brothers, two sisters and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 5 (today) at 2 p.m. in the Grogan Funeral Home, Polson.
Interment will be in the Oakdale cemetery in Nebraska.
