Robert L. Mason

Robert L. (Bob) Mason passed away comfortably on Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, at Good Samaritan – Mountain View Manor after battling Alzheimer’s for over eight years.
He was born May 19, 1927, in Wapato, Wash., to Frank Mason and Alice (Eaton) Mason Torrey.
He was the oldest of four children. Bob’s early years were spent in the Yakima Valley and then West Kootenai, Rexford, where he graduated eighth grade. He attended Lincoln County High School and graduated in 1945.
He then served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947.
He attended Centralia Junior College and Montana State University on football scholarships for his ability as a running back and punter.
He married Marilyn Slaney in 1952. They had four children.
Some of Bob’s work career includes short logging on lower Young Creek in the West Kootenai with Ken McAllister, a planer man for Jim Hurst Sr. at Ksanka Sawmill in Fortine and then retiring from Lincoln Electric Cooperative after 25 years of service as a lineman and member services/public relations.
In his youth and early adult years, he rode horses with friends like Larry Purdy, Bud Giese and Jerry Marvel. He played several rounds of golf and fished with hundreds of friends over the years.
Bob and Marilyn spent 16 years of their retirement together near Rathdrum, Idaho, at Twins Lakes Village Golf Course. They have several friends there, especially Al and Theresa Underwood. They returned to Eureka and the closeness of their family in June of 2008 when Bob’s health weakened him.
Bob’s favorite activities included fishing, golfing, camping, bowling and a love of most any sports. He had a passion for music, which included drumming, playing the harmonica and singing. He performed with several different groups and bands over the years.
As a young man he played town team baseball with lifetime friends like Bill Gwynn. He was a 26 year veteran of the Montana Officials Association as a basketball referee. Bob and Jim Peltier were a refereeing team for several years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Scottish Rite Shriner. For such a small man he had a huge heart. He was a good man, fine husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His flamboyant personality, smiles and sense of humor will live within us all forever. He was a true Montana man with his work ethics, his belief in God, family, country, community and personal responsibility.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Frank Mason and Ronnie Torrey.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn of 61 years and their four children: Bobbi (Mike) Hedges, Pam (Jake) Pluid, Gary (Sandi) Mason and Tana (Mark) Johnston; sister Barbara (Mason) Morgan of West Kootenai, Rexford; 10 grandchildren: Kami, Jaime, Cody, Dru, Leslie, Beau, Kyle, Justin, Shanan, and Paige; 13 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of wonderful friends spanning across this country and Canada.
Graveside services will be held at the Tobacco Valley cemetery on Friday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m., followed by a reception at the VFW Post in Eureka.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Good Samaritan – Mountain View Manor in Eureka or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Anthony Paul Torres Sr.

Anthony (Tony) Paul Torres Sr., born May 13, 1933, in Libby to Esteniloy and Genevieve (Enders) Torres, went to his final resting place Nov. 16, 2013, at Mountain View Manor in Eureka.
Tony was the third of 12 children. The family lived in Warland and old Rexford prior to moving to Eureka.
Tony married Shirley Truman in December 1953. To this union they welcomed children Andy Torres, Billings Mont; Rocky (Kathy) Torres, Oakley, Kan.; Sue Torres, Gillette, Wyo.; Teresa (Chuck) Torres-Birgensmith, Eureka; and Barbara Ann Torres, Columbia Falls.
Tony raised his family working as a Montana logger for many years. Tony and Shirley later divorced.
In 1974, Tony married June Clarke-Stevens. Tony and June later moved to Gillette, Wyo., where they resided for 18 years. Following Tony’s retirement as a coal miner and June’s passing, Tony returned to Eureka.
In May 2003, Tony married Helen Sarver. Tony and Helen enjoyed their country drives as well as attending church services. Tony’s family time was his life. He also enjoyed being in the woods, fishing, hunting, camping, gardening, traveling, playing pinochle and cribbage, and visiting with old friends over coffee at a local cafe.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents, his wife June, brothers Arnold Torres and Gary Torres, sisters Joyce Boone, Helen Ward and Kathy Setter; grandchildren Levi Flint, Angie Cioffi, Brenda, Slade and Dylan Groene.
Tony is survived by his wife, Helen Torres; his children; siblings: Don Farrell, Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario Canada; Rosemary (Ray) Gwynn, Joe Torres, Maggie King and Dee Dee Torres of Eureka; grandchildren Sam (Mark) Doble, Brandy (Phil) Hoagland, Misty Torres, Brooke (Jim) Spoklie, Paul (Chelsea) Torres, Sara (Erik) Weber and Cole McCully; also his step children and step grandchildren, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Mountain View Manor for the excellent care provided over the past two years.
Viewing will be Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, from 1-7 p.m. at Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home in Eureka.
Church services will be Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Church of God, with luncheon to follow in Eureka.

Betty Butts

On Nov. 10, 2013, Betty Jean Butts, beloved wife and mother, surrounded by her loving family, passed on from natural causes to the arms of our heavenly father.
Betty was born in Kalispell on Dec. 6, 1932, to Edward and Pearl Clarke, followed soon after by her three brothers: Richard Clarke of Oregon; and Ted Clarke and David Clarke, both of Eureka.
Growing up on a ranch on the West Kootenai, Betty knew how to work hard and enjoy everything that life brought to them.
On Feb. 6, 1953, while working in Roseburg, Ore., Betty married Roy Butts, her high school sweetheart and the love of her life. They enjoyed over 60 short years of love, life and laughter together.
Betty loved to travel and she loved her handiwork — knitting, needlepoint, sewing, quilting and so many other talents. Her family was always the most important focal point of her life. Betty nurtured and instilled love and togetherness in all of the lives she touched.
Betty’s smile and her love of life will be terribly and sorely missed by all who knew her.
Betty is survived by her three younger brothers: Richard, Ted and David; husband Roy; children Jan and husband Jim Dry; Ken and fiancé Sue Thompson and daughter Sarah Thompson; Jean and husband Ron Glasgow; grandchildren Jacie Sievers, Brian Glasgow, Tyra Glasgow, Randy Glasgow, Beth Glasgow, Tracey Glasgow, Ronnie Glasgow and great-grandchildren Kaiden and Liliauna Glasgow.
A celebration of life for Betty will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17, at her brother Ted’s residence at 341 Rivers Edge Drive, Eureka.
Arrangements are by Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home in Eureka.
Gifts or donations are asked to be given in Betty’s name to the Heart Association.

Barbara Roose

Barbara May Robinson Roose passed away Nov. 7, 2013.
She was born Aug. 10, 1924, to parents Charles and Elsie Robinson in London, England. Six years later younger brother Roy joined them. A few years later the Robinsons moved to Barry, Wales, where her father worked in the Welsh coal mines.
During World War II, Barbara was employed as a telephone operator for the British government. It was at this time that she met the love of her life, Glen Roose. Glen and Barbara were married June 9, 1945, in Merthyr Devon Church in Barry, Wales. Barbara traveled to the United States in a converted hospital ship, the SS Huddleston, arriving in Eureka May 9, 1946.
On May 5, 1949, Barbara became an American citizen, something she was extremely proud of. Barbara loved her life in Eureka, gardening with Glen, baking, sewing and always knitting, having their five children and watching them grow. She volunteered at the county fair in the fine arts division. She even won second in the nationals for her beautiful knitting. In her later years her “ministry” was making prayer shawls, knitting literally hundreds. She made one by special request for the Episcopal bishop of Montana.
She instilled her love of all things English in her children and grandchildren. Whether it was British history, the Royal Family or the “proper” cup of tea.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Glen, her daughter Glenda and her parents. She is survived by her children: Shirley Carlson, Barry Roose, Sheila and Bob Graham, Robyn and Jeff DeWitt, Steve Leigh; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; her brother Roy and wife Ronnie and their children.
She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered. She is dancing with her Glennie now and looking forward to “tea time.”
Services were Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, with a reception following at the VFW.

Howard Newcomb

Howard “Joe” Newcomb, 68, passed away suddenly at his home in Eureka on Nov. 4, 2013.
He was born May 15, 1945, in Spokane, Wash. Joe grew up in Tacoma, Wash., but spent time in Montana as a young man before enlisting in the Army in 1969.
After his military career he moved back to Washington but always dreamed of moving back to Montana. He fulfilled that dream in 2004 when he retired and moved to Eureka.
Joe loved the outdoors. His passions included fishing, hunting and riding his Harley. He also enjoyed woodworking, delivering meals to the elderly and spending time with his family. His final glory was bagging his 5×5 bull elk just days prior to his death.
He was a loving husband, son, brother, father, uncle and grandfather and will be dearly missed by all.
Joe is preceded in death by sister Leona “Cissy” Meadors.
He is survived by wife Sherry; sisters Velda, Alice, and Marilyn; brothers Edward “Corky” and Charles “Chuck;” daughters Shawn and Joanna; sons Charles, Brent and Joseph; as well as 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A celebration of life was held at his home on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, where Joe was honored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In attendance were friends and family from Washington, Montana, South Carolina, and Texas.
You are gone from this earth but never forgotten.

Dianna Van Dyk

On Oct. 18, 2013, Dianna Van Dyk, 58, passed away in the Kalispell hospital after an extended illness.
She is survived by her daughter, Shya, and two brothers living in California.
Dianna was born in Texas on Sept. 11, 1955.
Dianna loved to write poetry, the beach and Beach Boys music.
Graveside services will be held at 10 Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at the Tobacco Valley cemetery.

Patricia Gibbons Rosenthal

Patricia Gibbons Rosenthal died painlessly and secure in faith on Oct. 17, 2013.
Patricia was born Feb. 22, 1919, in Chester, Mont., to Walter S. and Ruby A. Gibbons. She had three brothers, Joseph, John and James.
She is survived by two brothers: John of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Jim of Redmond, Wash.; daughter and son-in-law, Winnifred and Wolfgang Adolph of Tallahassee, Fla., as well as many loving nieces, nephews and godchildren.
She grew up in Eureka, graduating from high school here. As a 1940 library science graduate of the University of Montana in Missoula, she spent her lifetime as a librarian. Her first job was in the public library in Kalispell. In her long career, she worked in various capacities in many states, ranging from children’s librarian to genealogist. She spoke at the National Genealogical Society.
A hallmark of her life was service to the Episcopal Church. In 1944 she married the Rev. Willis M. Rosenthal, and they served in many parishes across the country. Patricia served as diocesan chair of the United Thank Offering, Oregon; on the first diocesan Archives and History Committee and as chair of the Episcopal Women, North Carolina. She also served as a delegate to both national and diocesan conventions. In Utah, she also learned the art of liturgical embroidery and decorated many church vestments.
In her professional life, she served on the First Mayor’s Committee on Women’s Rights in Salisbury, N.C., during the campaign to gain equal rights for women. In Salisbury, she was a member of the Business and Professional Women.
Upon retirement, she and her husband moved first to Cooleemee, N.C., then to Penick Village in Southern Pines, N.C., in 1993. In Penick Village she served as librarian in the south building for 15 years, as president of the residents’ association for three years and two terms on the board of directors. She served as a member of the planning committee for the new Penick Village campus and was an early and enthusiastic supporter of the Garden Cottage assisted living format. At her death she was an honorary member of the Penick Board. She was a charter member of the Saint Monica’s chapter of the Daughters of the King at Emmanuel Church in Southern Pines and herself joined the organization on her 21st birthday.
Her ashes will be interred next to those of her husband of 54 years at Saint Matthews Church in Salisbury, N.C.

Penny M. Krause

Penny M. Krause, 48, passed away Feb. 1, 2014, in Butte.
She was adventurous and loved playing baseball, fishing and camping.
After graduating, she traveled around, ending up in California. She soon discovered the joy of motherhood when daughter Laura was born.
She longed for Montana and soon settled in Kalispell. Her family started growing, welcoming Nathan, Christopher and Taneisha. Penny thought motherhood was her greatest accomplishment.
She enjoyed writing poetry, crocheting, baking, collecting angels and being a grandma.
Penny was plagued with many health issues and left us too soon. Her love and memories will live on forever.
Penny left behind her children Laura, Nathan, Christopher, Taneisha; grandchildren Camry, Rome, Dominik, Damian and Archer.
A memorial is planned for a later date.
