Katherine M. Bacewicz

Katherine M. (Kershaw) Bacewicz, 96, of East Helena, died Jan. 22, 2003, at Big Sky Care Center in Helena.

Katherine was born in Three Rivers, Mass., Dec. 15, 1906, and was the daughter of the late John and Mary Fabian of Amesbury, Ma. She married Bertram G. Kershaw of St. John, N.B. Canada, in 1925, who passed away in 1941, and later married Dr. Francis Bacewicz, a former Lt. Commander, retired from the Navy, who passed away in 1971, in Inglewood, Calif. During her marriage to Dr. Bacewicz, being a Navy wife, she lived in Virginia, South Carolina and California.

She was pre-deceased by both husbands, and a son, Bertram G. Kershaw of Auburn, Calif., and a grandson, Brian B. Adams of Hampton, N.H.

She is survived by a son, John L. Kershaw and his wife Kathleen of East Helena; three daughters, Elaine L. Fletcher, and her husband Russell of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; Ruth P. Adams and her husband Paul of Chatham, Mass.; Marietta Kampa and her husband Paul of Fort Meyers, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, Kenney and Kurt Fletcher of Maine; Dean and Lee Adams of New Hampshire; Thomas, Paul and John Kampa of New York, and Stephen Kampa of New Hampshire; Katherine Hudson of Florida, Mary Fuchs of Ohio; Jon Kershaw of California, Lt. Commander Justin Kershaw, stationed in Italy, and Adrian Kershaw; several great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Katherine devoted her life to her children and their families. She loved to crochet special items for family and friends, and she spent endless hours on craft items for worthy causes. She also loved to dance with her senior citizen friends.

Her family and friends will miss her loving and happy-go-lucky attitude during hard times and happy times. She will be sadly missed by all that knew her.

Family will receive friends on Friday, Feb. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in East Helena. Burial of cremains will take place at a future date at St. Josephs cemetery, Amesbury, Mass. Arrangements by E. V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, Amesbury.

Local arrangements were entrusted to Hagler-Anderson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to cancer research or eye research.

Norman E. Wright

Norman E. Wright, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Colmery ONeil VA Medical Center in Topeka, Kansas. He was born on May 1, 1930, to Laurel and Josephine (Schauby) Wright in Great Falls.

Norman served in the Korean War for the U.S. Army for 21 months and overseas in Korea for nine months. Norman lived at Almanor Apartments while living in Helena. Norman will be remembered as a quiet man who led a simple life. His generosity will be appreciated by the students of Montana State University who will benefit from the legacy his leaves. Rest ye well, Norman.

Visitation for Norman will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Feb. 6, at Retz Funeral Home. Graveside services with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at the Montana State Veterans cemetery.

Eleanor June Toney

Eleanor June Toney, 85, died at Broadwater Health Center in Townsend on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Mom was born June 1, 1917, to Joe and Grace Buckingham. She attended high school in Townsend and graduated at the age of 16.

Mom was raised at the Miller mine above Diamond City on Confederate Gulch. There she learned to love the mountains and wildflowers. She was a beautiful artist who could see beauty in everything.

Mom loved music, rock collecting, painting, gardening and dancing. Most of all, she loved her family. She had a lot to share - love, memories, hugs and kisses.

Her husband, Kenneth L. Toney, preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 1995.

Survivors include her children: daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Louis Schieno of Billings; daughter, Beverly Fuller of Helena; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Glendia Toney of Townsend; son, Gregory Toney of Townsend; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Dianna Toney of Helena; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb, 11, at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Townsend with Pastor Mike Hart officiating. Public viewing is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church. Retz Funeral Home is caring for arrangements.

Dominique R. Womble

Dominique R. Womble, age 18, born March 4, 1984, in Salt Lake City, joined her grandparents in heaven Feb. 2, 2003.

She attended Broadwater, CRA and Capital High schools. Dominique graduated from Project Challenge in Dillon in 2000. She was stationed at Norfolk, Va., and serving in the Navy at the time of her death.

Dominique is survived by her parents, Rick and Val Palmer; grandparents Larry and Peggy Palmer; her brothers, John Cooper (Dena) and Matt Palmer; a sister, Lisa Franklin (Floyd); and various aunts and uncles as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dominique will be sorely missed. Her light has been extinguished, but not her spirit for life. Her family will miss her loving heart and warm smile.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. from Hagler-Anderson Chapel with Pastor David Bitter of the Valley View Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Military graveside services will be conducted at Montana State Veterans cemetery at Fort Harrison. Memorials can be made to donor's choice. Services have been entrusted to Hagler-Anderson Mortuary.

Clara M. Slough

Clara M. Slough died of lung cancer Dec. 23 at Shelby House, East Helena, where she had lived for more than two years. She was 84.

Her husband of 52 years, Bill, preceded her in death in 1991 in Goliad, Texas.

Mrs. Slough was born in Idaho Springs, Colo., on Jan. 23, 1918. She was an avid golfer, bridge player and painter. She was active in Republican politics in Texas, where her family moved when she was a child. She organized county-level U.S. Senate campaigns in the 1960s for Barry Goldwater, John Tower and George H.W. Bush. She served as a member of the Texas Republican State Committee and in the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature. Mrs. Slough and her husband were two of the 36-member American delegation chosen to initiate the Walk to Emmaus program in Australia in 1984.

She worked as a reporter for the Texas City Sun, which her family owned, and retired as a secretary for Union Carbide Co.

She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Laceky and her husband, Tom, of Helena; a son, John Slough and his wife, Betty, of Dallas; a brother, Don Stafford of Avon Lake, Ohio; and three grandsons, Mark Laceky of Tustin Ranch, Calif., Adam Laceky of Helena, and Bill Slough and his wife, Li, of Hong Kong.

A memorial service is planned later in Dallas.

Torrey Benton Johnson

Torrey Benton Johnson, 86, of Kirby, Mont., passed away Dec. 26, 2002, in Hardin. His life represents the last of an era of the cowboy, roundup wagons, chasing wild horses and ranching that will never be seen again.

He was born Dec. 6, 1916, at the Big Red Ranch in Ucross, Wyo., the fifth of seven children to parents William Victor Johnson and Jessamine Spear Johnson. The family moved to the X4 Ranch at Kirby in 1917. He attended high school in Hardin and later Sheridan, Wyo.

His college years were at the University of Montana and the University of Chicago. Torrey worked as a wrangler, guide and trapper from 1931 to 1938 at the family dude operation, the Spear O Wigwam in the Big Horn Mountains south of Sheridan. He learned to play the guitar and sing a few songs for fun around the evening campfires.

While at the University of Chicago, he won an amateur contest to play and sing for the Warner Brothers Theater at Oak Park every evening at 9 p.m. It helped pay for his education. Throughout his life, Torrey entertained parties, crowds and official gatherings with his guitar and repertoire of approximately 450 Western and Spanish songs. On many of those occasions, his brothers Brad, Bill and Vic, and sisters Annabelle, Phyllis and Eileen accompanied him.

Torrey was president of the Big Horn County Livestock Association for four years and president of the Big Horn County Farm Bureau for two years. He served on the Executive Committee of the Montana Stockgrowers Association from 1968 to 1972 and was elected president of the association in 1984.

In a special general election held in November of 1971, Torrey was elected from District 1 as a member of the Montana Constitutional Convention and assisted in rewriting the present Constitution for Montana, which was ratified in 1972.

He learned to fly in 1943, using various aircraft to check cattle, fences and fly for machinery repairs for ranch equipment. Torrey was past president of the Montana Flying Farmers and Ranchers Association and helped establish the International Flying Farmers and Ranchers Association.

Torrey and Chet Huseman were contracted by the Big Horn National Forest in the 1930s to plant fish in many of the high mountain lakes of the Cloud Peak Wilderness area, using the family packhorses from the Spear O Wigwam. Among Torreys many other lifelong activities were the Big Horn County Republican Central Committee, Big Horn Livestock Hall of Fame, Al Bedoo Shrine and the Black Horse Patrol.

On March 28, 1940, he married Adrienne Marye Henderson at Hyattsville, Md. Together they ranched at Kirby until 1998, when Adrienne passed away. They had been married 58 years and raised five children: Sandra, Robin, Jocelyn (Jolly), Phillip and Tempe. His wife Adrienne, brothers Bill Spear and Victor Johnson, and sisters Eileen Sargent, Annabelle Moody and Phyllis King preceded Torrey in death. Survivors include his children, Sandra (George) Smith of Banner, Wyo., Robin (Kate) Johnson of Billings, Jolly (Lyle) Tyler of Wyola, Phillip (Colleen) Johnson of Helena and Tempe (Hal) Javitz of California; his brother, Brad (Pat) Spear of Sheridan, Wyo.; his grandchildren, Kelly (Natalie) Peabody, Gina (John) Stevens, Wendy (Kevin) Lloyd, Brody Johnson, Addy (Toby) Larson, Therese Johnson, Merit (Blaine) Etzel, Benton Johnson, Khale Century Tyler, Jordan and Ashley Tyler, Tori (Jamie) Gleich, Gwendolyn (Tom) Felstet, Jennifer E. Johnson, Phillip and Jacob Javitz; his great grandchildren, Kassie and Kelsey Peabody, Hannah and Jarron Lloyd, Lauren and Katie Gleich and Sidney Felstet as well as numerous relatives.

The family would especially like to thank the staff of Heritage Acres Nursing Home of Hardin for the care they gave our Dad. It is greatly appreciated. Also, a big thank you to everyone who stopped in to visit him.

Cremation has taken place in the Bullis Eastern Montana Crematory. Memorial funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, in the St. Peters Episcopal Church in Sheridan. Private disposition of the ashes will follow the services.

Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Crippled Childrens Transportation Fund, Heritage Acres Nursing Home of Hardin, Montana Stock Growers or the Big Horn County Museum.

Carlos Furhman Livers

Bozeman native and former Boeing manager Carlos F. Livers died in his sleep Monday morning following a long illness.

The son of Dr. Joe and the late Mary Livers, Carlos was born and raised in Bozeman, where he was active in scouts and grew up fishing and hunting, which he enjoyed throughout his life. He skied competitively for Gallatin County High School and Montana State College, participating in downhill, slalom, giant slalom, ski jumping and cross country skiing. He won numerous titles in these events, and during his college career placed third in the NCAA national championship in cross-country skiing.

At 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a sonar operator aboard a patrol craft in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946.

Carlos married Elaine Hammerstrom of East Helena in 1946. He fondly recalled shooting a black bear in the mountains south of Bozeman the afternoon before their first date.

Carlos received his B.S. in mathematics in 1950 and his M.S. in mathematics in 1955, both from Montana State College. He taught math at Roundup High School from 1950 to 1957, where he also coached boys JV basketball.

In 1957, Carlos joined the Boeing Company in Seattle as a mathematician and went on to a successful career in Boeing management. The Livers family moved to New Orleans in 1962 with Boeings Saturn V booster rocket contract from NASA. In 1967 he joined the newly formed Boeing Computer Services (BCS), moving to Cocoa Beach, Fla., to manage telemetry and other computer services for Boeings Gemini and Apollo contracts. He returned to Seattle in 1973 at the end of the Apollo program, continuing his career with BCS.

Carlos retired from Boeing in 1991. He and Elaine returned to Bozeman in 1998. He continued to enjoy an occasional fishing trip, despite impairment from a serious stroke.

Survivors include father Joe Livers of Seattle; brother Jim (and wife Marian) Livers of Roseburg, Ore.; daughter Linda (and husband Gene) Monson of Bozeman; daughter Sue (and husband Bruce) Sailer of Chester; and son Tom (and wife Ellen) Livers of Helena. Grandchildren are: Michael Monson of Bozeman; Kaci Monson of Denver; Josh (and wife Erin, daughter Kiera) Brown of Eureka; Rebekah Brown of Spokane, Wash.; Jennifer Brown of Bozeman; Joe Livers of Helena; and Sarah Livers of Helena. Carlos was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Furhman Livers, in 2000.

A memorial service is set for Saturday, Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be sent to: Bozeman Firefighters Assn., P.O. Box 1230, Bozeman, MT 59771-1230.

Joyce F. Whaley

MISSOULA Joyce F. Whaley, 85, of Townsend, passed away Jan. 6, 2003, of natural causes at Village Health Care Center in Missoula.

She was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Marengo, Iowa, to James and Rose Blaine. She graduated from Frazee High School in Frazee, Minn., and moved to Montana in 1934.

In September of 1936 she married Phillip Whaley. She and Phillip worked on the family ranch for many years.

Joyce loved bowling, fishing, reading and playing cards. She will be remembered as a lady who always had a welcoming smile.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Phil; brothers, James, Ronald and Donald; and sisters, Thelma, Irene and Gladys. Survivors include her son, Scott Whaley, and his wife, Jean, of Missoula; granddaughters, Kristi and Danelle, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A reception in her memory will be held Saturday, Jan. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Citizen Center in Townsend. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association or to the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch. Arrangements are under the care of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.

Mathilda Hoving Schouten

Mathilda "Til" Hoving Schouten, died Jan. 6, 2003, at a care center in Townsend. Mathilda was born to John and Clara VanDerBosch Oct. 18, 1916, in Primgham, Iowa.

She married Nicholas Hoving in 1933. They owned and operated a gas station and parts store in Artesia, Calif., for 20 years. He preceded her in death. In 1980 she moved to Lynden, Wash., to be nearer to her family. She met and married Arie Schouten. He also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughters, Ruth Ann VanderLinden of Kernville, Calif., and Patricia Kent of Townsend; sons, Nickolas (Nancy) Hoving Jr. of Puyallup, Wash., and William (Shirley) Hoving of Helena; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. From her marriage to Arie, survivors include Hilbert (Myra) Schouten, Marion (Marcha) Schouten, Anna Mae (Ron) Ferguson, Clair (Corrie) Schouten, Audrey (Vern) McCauley, Alyda (Dwayne) Dykstra and Arlo (Charollete) Schouten.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at 3 p.m. at the Townsend Funeral Chapel, 310 Broadway, with graveside services to follow at a later date in Cerritos, Calif. The family suggest memorial contributions in lieu of flowers to Eden Childrens Home, c/o Ron Iverson, 24021 39th Ave. S.E., Bothell, WA 98021-9006.

Althea June Schmidt

Althea "Alta" June Schmidt, of Helena, was called to heaven on Jan. 6, 2003. She was born in Townsend to the late Eunice and Walter Smith, as the oldest of six children. She went to school in Radersberg and Townsend. She married Rudy Schmidt on Oct. 15, 1940, and lived in the Montana and Colorado area until finally settling in the Helena Valley in 1952.

Althea was very active in her community and belonged to the Rebecca and Moose lodges. She was an active member of the First Lutheran Church. She was also a musician and enjoyed playing music with her siblings. She dearly loved her family and felt blessed in spending time with children and grandchildren. She later became a member of Our Redeemers Lutheran Church.

In addition to her parents, her son, Timothy Schmidt, and her husband, Rudy Schmidt, also preceded her in death.

She is survived by four daughters, Ruby Andridge of Boise, Idaho, Susan Mellinger of Denver, Rita Mundt of Bozeman, and Melody Schmidt of Denver; five grandchildren, Nicole Wallace of Coppell, Texas, Rachelle Lipple of Boise, Idaho, Ricky and Jesse Mundt of Bozeman and Paul Schmidt of Helena; and two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Cade Wallace of Coppell. She is also survived by her siblings Floyd Smith of Helena, Mini Carroll of Missoula and Dolores Mockel of Helena.

Chapel services will be Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. from Hagler-Anderson Chapel. Interment of cremains will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Family prefers memorials to the Lewis and Clark Humane Society, P. O. Box 4455, Helena, MT 59604.
