Mathilda Hoving Schouten

Mathilda "Til" Hoving Schouten, died Jan. 6, 2003, at a care center in Townsend. Mathilda was born to John and Clara VanDerBosch Oct. 18, 1916, in Primgham, Iowa.

She married Nicholas Hoving in 1933. They owned and operated a gas station and parts store in Artesia, Calif., for 20 years. He preceded her in death. In 1980 she moved to Lynden, Wash., to be nearer to her family. She met and married Arie Schouten. He also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughters, Ruth Ann VanderLinden of Kernville, Calif., and Patricia Kent of Townsend; sons, Nickolas (Nancy) Hoving Jr. of Puyallup, Wash., and William (Shirley) Hoving of Helena; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. From her marriage to Arie, survivors include Hilbert (Myra) Schouten, Marion (Marcha) Schouten, Anna Mae (Ron) Ferguson, Clair (Corrie) Schouten, Audrey (Vern) McCauley, Alyda (Dwayne) Dykstra and Arlo (Charollete) Schouten.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at 3 p.m. at the Townsend Funeral Chapel, 310 Broadway, with graveside services to follow at a later date in Cerritos, Calif. The family suggest memorial contributions in lieu of flowers to Eden Childrens Home, c/o Ron Iverson, 24021 39th Ave. S.E., Bothell, WA 98021-9006.

Althea June Schmidt

Althea "Alta" June Schmidt, of Helena, was called to heaven on Jan. 6, 2003. She was born in Townsend to the late Eunice and Walter Smith, as the oldest of six children. She went to school in Radersberg and Townsend. She married Rudy Schmidt on Oct. 15, 1940, and lived in the Montana and Colorado area until finally settling in the Helena Valley in 1952.

Althea was very active in her community and belonged to the Rebecca and Moose lodges. She was an active member of the First Lutheran Church. She was also a musician and enjoyed playing music with her siblings. She dearly loved her family and felt blessed in spending time with children and grandchildren. She later became a member of Our Redeemers Lutheran Church.

In addition to her parents, her son, Timothy Schmidt, and her husband, Rudy Schmidt, also preceded her in death.

She is survived by four daughters, Ruby Andridge of Boise, Idaho, Susan Mellinger of Denver, Rita Mundt of Bozeman, and Melody Schmidt of Denver; five grandchildren, Nicole Wallace of Coppell, Texas, Rachelle Lipple of Boise, Idaho, Ricky and Jesse Mundt of Bozeman and Paul Schmidt of Helena; and two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Cade Wallace of Coppell. She is also survived by her siblings Floyd Smith of Helena, Mini Carroll of Missoula and Dolores Mockel of Helena.

Chapel services will be Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. from Hagler-Anderson Chapel. Interment of cremains will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Family prefers memorials to the Lewis and Clark Humane Society, P. O. Box 4455, Helena, MT 59604.

'Chief' Glen Oliver Delaware

"Chief" Glen Oliver Delaware, 68, of Helena, walks on Monday, Jan. 20, 2003. Glen is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe.

He married Lilla Kate Roberts and they were blessed with four children. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and highly decorated.

Glen's place in our hearts is irreplaceable. We will miss him dearly! He's gone to the Big Hunting Camp in the sky. He enjoyed skiing, hunting, fishing and partying.

His brother Dewayne Delaware preceded him in death. Surviving Glen is his daughter Theresa Pearl Delaware Dunn of Aikens, S.C.; son Meshell Lee "Mike" Delaware of Grovetown, Ga.; sons Andy James Delaware of Liberty, S.C., and Gerald Len Delaware of Irvine, Ky. Also surviving are Glen's brother Leonard "Stub" Delaware of Hot Springs; sister Barbara Gains of Spokane, Wash.; Aunt Jenny Etter of Helmville; along with eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be today, Jan. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon at Retz Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow today at 2 p.m. in Retz Funeral Home Chapel. Family and friends are welcome to join a celebration of Glen's life at O'Toole's in Helena. On Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, Glen will be honored at St. Ignatius Catholic Mission. Retz Funeral Home is caring for arrangements.

Connie Lynn Stark

Twin Bridges - Connie Lynn Stark died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2002, at a hospital in Spokane, Wash., from heart disease. She was born May 26, 1973, in Dillon and lived on the family ranch at Twin Bridges, graduating from Twin Bridges High School.

After working one year in Yuma, Ariz., she moved to Spokane in January 1997 and was employed at Rowan Internal Medicine for 11/2 years until she became too ill to work.

She is survived by her parents, Bob and Diane Stark of Spokane; sisters Linda of Spokane and Tami of Tucson, Ariz.; brother and sister-in-law Dale and Marlys Stark, and their three sons Daniel, Morgan and Devlin, all of Helena.

Her funeral is Saturday, Jan. 25, at 1:30 p.m. in the Sheridan High School gymnasium in Sheridan. Memorials preferred to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association. K & L Mortuary of Twin Bridges is in charge of the arrangements.

Doris Sprau

Doris Sprau, age 81, passed away peacefully at the Rocky Mountain Care Center on Jan. 20, 2003. Doris was born to Homer and Georgette Bower on Dec. 20, 1921, in Sandusky, Ohio.

Doris was married to Richard Sprau Sr. for more than 40 years prior to his death in 1984. Doris and Richard lived in Helena for many years before retiring to Olympia, Wash., where they were members of the St. John's Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. She was active in the Peace Corps and many church activities. Doris was also active in Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Nile. She returned to Helena following the death of her husband to be close to her family.

Doris is survived by two sons, Richard Sprau and John Sprau, and one daughter, Shari Mercer, and their families. Doris also has relatives in Billings and Ohio.

Cremation has taken place with burial to follow at the Sunset Memorial Gardens beside her husband. A private service is being held at the graveside. Local arrangements were entrusted to Hagler-Anderson Mortuary. The family prefers memorials to St. John's Lutheran Church, 1000 Helena Ave., Helena, MT 59601.

Brady Jay Lawson

Brady Lawson died unexpectedly on Jan. 21, 2003, at University of Washington Medical Center from complications from surgery. He was 22 years old. Brady was born on Dec. 24, 1980, in Longmont, Colo.

He moved to Marysville when he was 8 years old. Brady attended elementary school in Helena and graduated from Capital High in the Class of 2000. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force immediately following high school and completed basic training in Texas and technical training in Texas and Arizona. He was then assigned to Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, where he served as crew chief on F16 fighter aircraft.

Brady's life growing up in Marysville was one he made sure was a full and adventurous one. In his first years there, he and his friends filled their free time exploring the mountains, building numerous forts, hiking, fishing and camping. Next came skiing and Brady took to it with his natural zest and ability. He was a regular sight at Great Divide and soon developed into an expert skier. He soon broadened his adventures with hunting, snowmobiling, four wheelers, motorcycles and Jeeps.

Brady was filled with energy and ambition. He got his first job when he was 14 at the Marysville House restaurant and worked there all through his high school years. Hundreds of people enjoyed his cooking skills.

Of all the wonderful things Brady was, he was mostly a people person with an outstanding personality, wit and sense of humor. When he walked into a room, his brilliant smile and energy lit up the whole room. He instantly made friends everywhere he went. He has a huge number of devoted and wonderful friends forever. He had a wonderful way with children and always had time for everyone, regardless of age.

He is survived by his parents Marc and Deena Korting of Marysville, and Steve and Dawn Lawson of Lyons, Colo.; his fiancee Amy O'Connell of Helena; grandparents Ann Korting of Marysville, Herb and Charlotte Eskildsen of Helena, Louis and Alice Lawson of Florida and Don and Roberta Hartshorn of Kansas; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Brady Jay, there are simply no words to express how much we miss you already.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Helena College of Technology Donaldson Building, 1115 Roberts, in Helena, with the Rev. Stephen Brehe officiating. Hagler-Anderson Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Family suggests memorials to the Marysville Pioneer Club, c/o Lorna Johns, P.O. Box 16, Marysville, MT 59640.

H. Gordon Tripp

H. Gordon Tripp died of natural causes at his home on Jan. 19, 2003. He was born Feb. 1, 1943, in Glasgow to Howard Donald and Katherine Virginia Tripp.

In 1962 he graduated from Helena High School and later joined the Navy earning an honorable discharge in 1969. Married to Gloria Hermanson in 1968, they began their life together in California, returning to Montana in early 1971.

Following his discharge from the Navy, Gordon worked for the 3M Company as a customer service representative. Upon his return to Montana he worked for H&M; Equipment Company, a family owned business, and then began his career with Farmers Insurance Group as an agent in 1973, where he remained until his death. The time Gordon spent with his clients and friends who continually dropped by his office to chat, tell jokes, and generally "pass the time of day in a friendly Montana way" was a major source of comfort and pleasure.

Over the years, Gordon was affiliated with DeMolay for Boys, the Exchange Club, the American Legion, and the VFW. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and camp with family and friends. An excellent racquetball player, he won numerous titles in both singles and doubles.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Robert D. Tripp.

Gordon is survived by his son Buck and Bucks wife Cheri and their three children Kayla, Jayden and Tanner; his stepdaughter Marni Tripp and her children Taylor and Tori; sister Nancy and her husband Charles Hepburn of East Helena; brother Tom Tripp and his wife Sharon of Billings; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be military graveside services on Monday, Jan. 27, at 1:30 p.m. at the Montana State Veterans cemetery at Fort Harrison, with Pastor Jim Heikes officiating. Following the services, there will be a gathering of family and friends at the Fort Harrison Service Club.

In lieu of flowers, donation can be made in Gordons name to the Montana Racquetball Association, c/o John Kennis, MT Racquetball Association, 120 Ponderosa, Butte, MT 59701.

Ray Wayrynen

Reino John "Ray" Wayrynen, age 80, former Butte resident, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at his home in Surprise, Ariz.

He was born Sept. 24, 1922, in Hancock, Mich., moved to Butte as a child, graduating from Butte High School in 1941. In 1942, he married Nielsine Lowney. She survives. Ray enlisted in the Navy Seabees during World War II, serving in the South Pacific.

After returning home, he attended Worsham College in Chicago, graduating as an embalmer and funeral director. In Butte he worked for Whites Funeral Home and Sherman and Reed Mortuary, which he later purchased. He and Nielsine built Wayrynen Funeral Home on Florence Avenue. In 1957 he was elected to the Montana House of Representatives, representing Silver Bow County until 1970. He served as minority leader in 1963 and speaker in 1965. In 1971, Gov. Forrest Anderson appointed him to the State Board of Equalization, which later became the State Tax Appeals Board, of which he served as chairman until 1976 when he retired.

Survivors include his wife, Nielsine of Surprise; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dana Monaco of Peoria, Ariz.; granddaughter, Karen Atkinson of Phoenix; granddaughter and husband, Kathy and James Stephens; great-granddaughter, Annika Stephens of Rapid City, S.D.

Cremation has taken place. Private family services will be held in Surprise.

Donald Wray Shipman

Beloved father, son, brother, uncle and friend Donald Wray Shipman passed from this world on Jan. 22, 2003, from natural causes. Don resided for the last 27 years at 3790 York Road.

Don was born July 22, 1946, in Tacoma, Wash., to Richard and Elmira Shipman. He graduated from Puyallup High School.

Don served for four years in the United States Navy after high school and returned to Puyallup where he met, fell in love with and finally married his soul mate Connie Lou Meyers on Aug. 1, 1969.

Don was a self-employed masonry contractor for the last 30 years as a partner in Shipman Brothers Masonry. He took great pleasure in donning his hard hat every morning and mingling with people of all trades, while working hard day in and day out. Don has left his mark as a craftsman on numerous buildings in Helena, including: the Federal Reserve Bank, Montana State Fund, the Blue Stone House, the Downtown Walking Mall, as well as numerous fireplaces and considerable buildings throughout the state.

Don was a lover of children, and a sparkle appeared in his eyes whenever he had the chance to interact with any child. He loved life to the fullest and the opportunity to be a part of a young life was one of the things he loved best.

While being a hard worker, Don also realized the benefits of relaxation. When he wasnt working, Don could be found outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and had a collection of trophies as a testament to his skill as an outdoorsman. He enjoyed raising, training and hunting his own bird dogs and took every opportunity possible to enjoy the camaraderie of his dogs. When not hunting or fishing, Don enjoyed four wheeling with his wife and driving his classic Ford pickup to car shows. He was a Montana and World War II buff and could be found reading in any spare time he had. Don also enjoyed traveling extensively with his wife and considered himself a meteorologist of sorts. Don was a member of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman Union and served them proudly for over 25 years.

Don was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived and will be missed by his wife, Connie Shipman of Helena; his son Matt Shipman of Tualatin, Ore.; daughter Jennifer Shackleford of Bozeman; brother Duane Shipman of Helena, and his brother and sisters Richard Shipman, Marion Carel, Carol Lee Hand all of Puyallup, Wash. He will be missed greatly by numerous nephews, nieces and friends made throughout his time here.

We will all miss Dons half grin, the great jokes he used to tell and the love he was willing and happy to share with all who he came into contact with.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at Retz Funeral Home. Funeral services in celebration of his life will be 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at St. Pauls United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dave Andersen presiding. Interment will be at the Montana State Veterans cemetery at Fort Harrison. The family suggests memorials in Dons name to the Intermountain Childrens Home, 500 S. Lamborn, Helena, MT 59601.

George F. Zabel

Boulder - George F. Zabel, age 91, of Boulder died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at his home. He was born Aug. 5, 1911 at Faribault, Minn., to Theodore and Louise (Kovich) Zabel.

As a young boy, he moved to Montana after the death of his parents. He later owned and operated a farm and ranch north of Wibaux. He also worked for a sugar company, the Glendive Grazing Association, and after moving to Boulder, he worked at the Boulder River School and Hospital.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Juanita Zabel of Boulder, and several nephews in Minnesota.

A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Scott Funeral Home in Boulder. A graveside committal will be held at the Boulder cemetery at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Vera A. Flage

Vera A. Flage lost her long and courageous battle with cancer on Jan. 24, 2003. She was born Jan. 25, 1922, in Argyle, Manitoba, Canada, to Edward and Dorothy Miller. Vera spent her childhood and the beginning of her adult life in Manitoba before immigrating to Forsyth, Mont. On Sept. 22, 1956, she married the love of her life, Bennett G. Flage in Red Lodge. Ben and Vera built their home in East Helena in the 1960s where they have resided ever since.

Vera spent much of her working life in service to others. In the few years she lived in Billings, Vera worked as a file clerk for Beacon Truck Company. When she moved to Helena, she made a career change to the food service industry and worked for Beeco Foods. In 1966, Vera began working at the Capitol lunch counter and served not only lunches, but also a wonderful smile during many legislative sessions. She continued to do so until her retirement.

After retiring, Vera spent much of her time enjoying her hobbies of sewing, gardening and reading. She and Ben also liked to travel; they went many times to Forsyth to visit friends and Bens mother. As you drove the streets of East Helena or Highway 12 East, you could see Vera on one of her many long walks that she often enjoyed.

Vera was preceded in death by her daughter, Kelly Ann; her parents; her sister Olive James and brothers James and Russell Miller.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Ben of East Helena; her sister Ivy Wall originally of Great Falls and now residing in Helena and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation with family and friends will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Retz Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Retz Funeral Home with interment to follow at Forestvale cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of St. Peters, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT 59601.

Blanche B. Hooper

Blanche B. Hooper, age 87, of Helena, went home to her Lord Jan. 21, 2003, at her home.

She was born Sept. 13, 1915, in Wiliston, N.D., to Jack and Barbara OKeefe. She married Woodrow (Woody) Hooper Dec. 28, 1935, in Oakland, Calif. They spent most of their time among friends in Spokane, Wash., and Athol, Idaho, before moving to Helena in October 2002. Woody was in the printing industry and preceded her in death Sept. 24, 1990.

Survivors include her daughter Barbara Gayle Jones of Helena and a son Gary Hooper of Helena; two sisters, Ludillan Upton and Dorothy Bishop, both of San Leandro, Calif.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

No services are planned at this time and cremation has taken place. Helena Funeral Chapel has completed the arrangements.

James C. McCauley

James Charles McCauley, age 85, of Glendive, formerly of Logan, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 7, at the Montana State Veterans cemetery, Fort Harrison. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.

James was born Sept. 18, 1917, in Missoula, the son of Charles Michael and Emma Elizabeth (Burks) McCauley. He was raised and educated in Missoula and graduated from Missoula High School in 1935. James enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp, on Dec. 11, 1941, and served during World War II. James was honorably discharged on Nov. 27, 1945, with the rank of Master Technical Sergeant. He returned to Montana where he farmed and ranched near Missoula and Corvalis. He later worked for the Plymale Ranch at Townsend for a number of years. James moved to Logan in 1987 and in November 2002 to the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive.

Survivors include his sisters, Marian Gaforth of Wishram, Wash., Helena Shelden of Lander, Wyo., Kathryn Layne of Missoula, and Charlotte Mounce of Spokane, Wash.; 27 nieces and nephews.
