James C. McCauley

James Charles McCauley, age 85, of Glendive, formerly of Logan, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 7, at the Montana State Veterans cemetery, Fort Harrison. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.

James was born Sept. 18, 1917, in Missoula, the son of Charles Michael and Emma Elizabeth (Burks) McCauley. He was raised and educated in Missoula and graduated from Missoula High School in 1935. James enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp, on Dec. 11, 1941, and served during World War II. James was honorably discharged on Nov. 27, 1945, with the rank of Master Technical Sergeant. He returned to Montana where he farmed and ranched near Missoula and Corvalis. He later worked for the Plymale Ranch at Townsend for a number of years. James moved to Logan in 1987 and in November 2002 to the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive.

Survivors include his sisters, Marian Gaforth of Wishram, Wash., Helena Shelden of Lander, Wyo., Kathryn Layne of Missoula, and Charlotte Mounce of Spokane, Wash.; 27 nieces and nephews.

Peggy Lou Green

Peggy Lou Hazel (Leaf) Green, age 74 of Helena, died Jan. 28, 2003.

Peggy was born Aug. 18, 1928, in Helena. She was raised and educated in Helena and graduated from Helena High School. She attended college in Lancaster, Calif., where she earned a nursing degree. She worked as a LPN in California, Massachusetts and Helena.

She married Eugene Stenberg and they later divorced. She married Louis Earl Waitt Jr. They were divorced. She married Wendell Green and he preceded her in death in December 1991.

Peggy was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Fourth Ward. She was a stake missionary and played piano for the church Relief Society.

She enjoyed fishing, painting, music and traveling.

Her funeral is Friday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1260 Otter Road. Visitation will be Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Helena Funeral Chapel with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Friday prior to the service at the church. Following the service, burial will be at Forestvale cemetery.

Survivors include her daughters Peggy Gene (Bruce) Belnap of Helena, and Pamela Marie (Hank) Senecal of East Hampton, Mass.; son Tony (Robin) Stenberg of Helena; stepchildren Louis Earl Waitt of Texas, Jeff Waitt of Arkansas, Nita Saulam of Minnesota, Barbara Green and Laura Green, both of Helena; brothers, Basil Leaf of Elliston; a cousin, Doris Daniel; and 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Helena Funeral Chapel is in care of the family and arrangements.

Ronald N. Whitaker

Ronald Neal Whitaker, age 32, of Helena, passed away Jan. 31, 2003. He was born Aug. 16, 1970, in Anaconda to Marvin and Dortha Whitaker.

He enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing. He enjoyed spending time with his brothers and sisters and all his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Whitaker, a sister, Davonn Jolene Whitaker, and his grandparents, Neal and Katherine Whitaker and Charles and Flossie Presley. Survivors include his mother, Dortha Whitaker, brothers Marvin and Charley Whitaker, sisters Marva Wiltsey and Roberta Kunz, and his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 4, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1260 Otter Road, Helena with Bishop Paul Nelsen officiating. Cremation has taken place; private interment will be at a later date. Services have been entrusted to Hagler-Anderson Mortuary.

Jane Cougill

Jane Cougill died unexpectedly early Sunday morning, Feb. 2, 2003, of natural causes. Jane was born June 29, 1917, in Roundup, the daughter of Harold and Marion Veblen.

She grew up in Big Timber and San Diego, where she attended Oceanside Carlsbad Union High School. The Boulder River outside Big Timber was the site of many happy childhood summers. Jane attended both Montana State University, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi, and the University of Oregon, where she played violin and was concertmistress for the University Orchestra.

Jane married Vernon Cougill, another Montanan at the University of Oregon, on May 10, 1940, in Butte. After he returned from duty in World War II they settled in Montana and had two daughters, Candace and Julia. The family resided in Helena from 1949.

Jane was active in her Pi Phi alumnae group, a spirited sewing circle of special friends, and she played violin with the Helena Symphony Orchestra from its inaugural days. She worked with the U.S. Immigration Service and the Small Business Administration, played tennis, and enjoyed many social occasions with friends and family, especially close neighbors Mary and Bud Little and their family.

Later in life, Jane and Vernon spent several happy winters in Indio, Calif., with old friends from Helena and also new friends from California. After Vernons death in 1990, Jane lived full time in Helena, eventually relocating to the Waterford, where she greatly enjoyed a wonderful circle of friends, and where she and her cribbage partner Lois Eveland stood exactly even after years of play.

Given her lifelong love of all music, Jane developed a passion for opera, and especially the music of the Three Tenors later in life. She and her daughters traveled to hear them, and her favorite, Jose Carreras, in recent years. As recently as November she enjoyed a trip to Seattle to hear Mr. Carreras honor the city and doctors who had guided his survival of leukemia.

Jane was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Vernon, her sister Helen Starr, and her nephews David and "Skipper" Starr. She is survived by her daughters, Julia and companion John Kelley, Candace and husband, Allen Fetscher, and grandchildren Burke and Emilie Fetscher, as well as her brother, David Veblen, and his wife, Shirley, and daughters, as well as many friends and other relatives.

Jane would have appreciated any memorials to the Jose Carreras International Leukemia Foundation at P.O. Box 29771, Elkins Park, PA 19027 or to any charity of the donors choice. She wished to be remembered as a good wife and mother, a good friend, and a lover of music.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service and gathering to honor and remember Janes life will be held at the Waterford in Helena on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m.

Athena Dawn Morrissey

Athena Dawn Morrissey, age 9, of Helena, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, in Helena after falling through the ice at Spring Meadow Lake.

Athena was born in Helena Jan. 22, 1994, to Thomas and Annette Morrissey. She was presently in the third grade at Kessler School.

Athena enjoyed outdoor activities and playing with Barbie Dolls and pets. She was a participant in the Big Brothers and Sisters program.

She is survived by her parents and a brother, Cody; maternal grandmother, Mavis Middleton, of Hayden Lake, Idaho, paternal grandparents, Gerald and Myrna Morrissey of Helena; plus numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

There will be public visitation on Tuesday from 12 to 8 p.m. at Retz Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at the Retz Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A fund for those who wish to contribute has been established in Athenas name at the First Interstate Bank; P.O. Box 5299, Helena, MT 59604.

Athena Dawn Morrissey

Tuesdays obituary for Athena Dawn Morrissey, age 9, of Helena should have included a surviving sister Amanda Rickard and brother Ricky Williams Jr.

Morrissey, a third grader at Kessler School who enjoyed outdoor activities and playing with Barbie dolls and pets, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, in Helena after falling through the ice at Spring Meadow Lake.

William B. Wright

William Bernard Wright, of Helena, went home to be with his Lord on Jan. 31, 2003. Bill was born on Jan. 11, 1927, to Lula and Bennett Wright in Chicago.

He graduated from Lane Technical High School in 1944. He served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952. He retained a passionate interest in the Army inspired by his service to his country. He worked as a heating and air conditioning project engineer for various companies in Chicago. He moved to Helena in 1994.

Bill met and married his lifelong love, Elizabeth "Libby" Kerns in 1956. They enjoyed 46 years together and with their daughters and grandchildren. His family and his Lord were always priorities in his life. He enjoyed a love of history and was a keen observer of people and events. He enjoyed talking to people in all walks of life. He touched many people with his kind and gentle spirit.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth of Helena; and his three daughters and spouses, Sharon and Scott Homer of California, Barbara and Bryan Nelsen of Helena and Elizabeth "Beth" and Robert Heiser of Winston. Survivors also include his grandchildren, Mathew, Abigail and Garret Homer; Emily and Rachel Nelsen and Madeline Heiser. His sister, Lillian, of California also survives him. His parents, sister Ruth, and brother Benny preceded him in death.

A praise service celebrating Bills life will be today, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. at Hannaford Bible Church, 830 N. Hannaford St.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Parkinsons Foundation or to the Moody Bible Institute, 820 N. LaSalle, Chicago, IL 60610.

James C. Wolfe

James C. Wolfe, age 84, of Helena, died Feb. 2, 2003, in Great Falls after a brief illness. James was born to Carl and Beulah (Burcham) Wolfe in El Paso, Texas, June 1, 1918.

James was better known by Jim, Red or Jimmy. He attended school in Texas and after school he moved to Anaconda to work at the smelter. While there, he met Maxine Heckathorn and married her on March 4, 1941, in Helena. Later they moved to Vancouver, Wash., where Jim worked in the shipyards. While in Vancouver they had two children, a daughter, Karyn, and a son, Joe. After Vancouver, Jim traveled, working various construction jobs, including working on Canyon Ferry Dam. In 1953, he went to work for the Montana Power Company at Hauser Dam, then later transferred to the Flint Creek Plant at Georgetown Lake. Jim retired from Flint Creek in 1983 and moved back to Helena.

Jim enjoyed horseback riding, playing horseshoes, riding his snowmobile and tinkering with his many projects.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine (Heckathorn); daughter, Karyn Hamilton and husband Dwain Wood of Helena; son, Ronald Joe and wife Christa of Renton, Wash.; three grandsons, Jeff Hamilton and wife Linda of Colstrip, David Hamilton and wife Krista of Helena, and Steve Wolfe of Helena; and a granddaughter, Natasha and husband Brad Wigen of Helena. Jim is also survived by his nine great-grandchildren, Becki, Seth, Katie, Stefanie, Jessicca, Noelle, Josie, Jessica and Samantha.

His parents, a sister, Marguerite, and a brother, Jack, preceded Jim in death.

As was Jims wish, there will be no memorial services, and cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to the organization of your choice.

Carolyn Joyce Forrest

Carolyn Joyce Forrest, of Helena, went to be with our Lord Jan. 30, 2003, following an extended illness. Carolyn was born to Lewis and Patricia Bogue March 1, 1946, in Helena and soon moved to Anaconda. She graduated from Anaconda High School. She went to work at Warm Springs Hospital where she met the love of her life, William Forrest, and was married Nov. 29, 1975. She had three children, went to college and spent several years working with the Salvation Army.

She is survived by two sons, Rocky (Sheri) Forrest and Mike Forrest; a grandson, Austin (Bucket Head) Lay, all of Helena; her father, Lewis Bogue; sisters Ibel Bogue, Joyce Smith, of Helena and Pat Bochme; and brother, Mark Bogue of Billings; also numerous nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia, a brother, Robert, a daughter, Kari, and her husband, William, and a nephew, Gus.

A memorial service will be held Feb. 4 at the Salvation Army Church, 1905 Henderson, Helena, at 2 p.m. Funeral arrangements completed by Helena Funeral Chapel.

Caroline Katherine Carroll Becker

Caroline Katherine Carroll Becker, 70, died of natural causes on Feb. 4, 2003. She was born June 23, 1932, to Howard and Ethel Carroll in Custer, S.D. She lived in Florida, North Dakota and Montana. Caroline moved to Helena in 1996 and worked for a short time for the Helena Independent Record.

Caroline was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Lyle Corbett, second husband Willard Becker and brother Thomas Reimer. She is survived by brothers Frank Carroll (Lois), Lewis Carroll, Jerry Teigen (Sue) and George Teigen (Karen); sisters Betty Betts (Kenny), Lena Ellison, Dorothy Free and Roxann (Russ) Barringer; numerous nieces and nephews; "the Brat, " and special friend Margaret Smithman.

She had a heart of gold and everybody was a friend. Her door was always open.

A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at Retz Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. Memorials are suggested to the Lewis and Clark Humane Society, P.O. Box 5544, Helena, MT 59604, or to an organization of the donors choice.

Ruth Anne Miller

On Feb. 5, 2003, Ruth Anne Miller, beloved mother and grandmother, left us to answer the Lords call.

Ruth was born in Missoula to Ernest and Catherine Martin on Dec. 31, 1934. She married Donald P. Miller on Sept. 23, 1952, and resided in Helena thereafter.

Ruth was devoted to her family and friends. She had an immense love for children. She worked for Rocky Mountain Development Council as a cook for the Head Start Program for 26 years. She also cooked for the daily dinner club for eight years. After retiring, she joined the Foster Grandparent Program, where she enjoyed spending time with children for the past six years.

Preceding her in death were her beloved husband, Don, in 1983; infant daughter, Rita; parents, Ernest and Catherine; sisters Marie and Terri; and brothers Floyd and Clifford.

Ruth is survived by five children: Richard Miller, Helena; Donna (James) Burleigh, University Place, Wash.; Tim (Crystal) Miller, East Helena; Shirley Miller, Helena; and Kathleen Beeman, Helena; 18 grandchildren, Angie (Matt) Furlong, Kerri (Jeremie) Marcum, Becky Miller, Brandie Goodwin, Cassie Goodwin, Tim Waples, Josh Waples, Rita Waples, Brian Waples, Kegan Miller, James Miller, Michael Staley, Michelle Staley, Don (Joy) Staley, Chris Miller, Zach Beeman, Jessie Beeman and Destiny Beeman; and seventeen great-grandchildren, Jaidon, Joscelin, Maryah, Ivie, Kaneesha, Alexus, Samantha, Tyzer, Seanna, Calub, Justin, Jayde, Amberly, Mike, Kendra, Dakota and Jay Jay. Also surviving are sisters, Rose Bomar of Clancy, Vera Helgeson of Hamilton and Catherine Bogard of Missoula; brothers, Wayne (Mary Alice) Martin of Sunburst, Roger (Marilyn) Martin of Seatac, Wash., and Lloyd (Alice) Martin of San Bernardino, Calif; two brothers-in-law, Jack (Shelly) Miller of Helena and Frank (Margaret) Miller of East Helena; and sisters-in-law, Mable Miller and Sue Cote of Helena, Peggy Elwess of Commerce City, Colo., and Dolly Lamping of Helena. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins, along with very special friends, Billie Jean Hill, Delores Kershaw, Bobbie Lavinder and Father Bud.

The angels came to get you.

They took your pain away.

You flew with them on Heavenly wings

To the Father up above.

Visitation will be Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 9, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Retz Funeral Home. A Christian vigil service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at St. Marys Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at the church. Interment will follow at Resurrection cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of St. Peters, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT 59601; Cancer Treatment Center Patients Fund, c/o St. Peters Foundation, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT 59601; or to the Head Start Program, 201 South Main, Helena, MT 59601.

Timothy Joseph McCoy

Timothy Joseph McCoy went peacefully to be with his sister Tomisue in Heaven Tuesday, Feb. 4, at St. Peter's Hospital.

Tim was born to Jack and Doris McCoy Sept. 19, 1959, in Butte, Mont. Tim attended school in Butte until his family moved to Townsend in 1967. Tim graduated from Broadwater County High School in 1977. Tim also attended Sierra Junior College, graduating in forestry.

Tim loved hard-rock mining, and worked mines in Nevada, Washington and numerous mines in Montana. Tim was recently working on the Cave Gulch reclamation project. Tim will be remembered by all for his great sense of humor and his practical jokes.

Tim was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Tomisue McCoy, in 1983.

Tims survivors include his mother and father of Townsend, his sister, Karen Dimmitt of Helena and daughters Karanel (Ben) Fleury and Jacob, Theresa Dimmitt and Jordan, his sister Marcia Bieber of Townsend and son Bart (Therese) Bieber and daughter Jamie (Mike) Sura and their son Michael James, his sister Tammy (Ross) Battershell of Clancy and son Thomas Oyen and daughter Emilee Oyen, his brother Jack McCoy (Barb) of Austin, his brother Doug (Pat) Stewart of Jefferson City and daughter Jessica (Chris) Silvonen and their daughter Shaina, and his companion Jenny Sanders and her son Chauncei (Timmyboy's beloved Roodster). Tim also is survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and by a host of wonderful friends.

A memorial service will be held at The Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church (301 N. Cherry St.) Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. with a gathering to follow at the Mint Annex at 4 p.m.
