Peggy Marie Dolan

Peggy Marie (Watson) Dolan passed away Friday at St. Peter's Hospital after an extended illness.

Born in Townsend in 1923, Peg lived on the family ranch outside of White Sulphur Springs until moving to Helena in the early 1930s. She attended Helena High School where she was active in sports and was the Bengals' Cheer Queen. One of the highlights of her recent years was attending the 60-year class reunion.

During World War II Peg trained to ferry bombers to England, but the untimely death of her mother during childbirth caused her to leave her training to raise her infant brother Jim.

Peg spent her entire life in Montana, the vast majority of it in the Helena area. She lived in Canyon Ferry until 1962 when she and her husband, "Fuzz, " (and four boys) moved to East Helena where she continued to reside. Peg's family emigrated from Ireland, moving in the 1860s to Montana, where her great-grandfather Pat worked as a muleskinner. Her grandfather Niche Moran rode with Charlie Russell in the Judith Basin.

Peg worked for 23 years at the Montana highway department, retiring in 1984 as the Minority Business Coordinator. During that tenure Peg received several national awards, primarily for her work with Native Americans.

No one enjoyed retirement more then Peg. Her house- always crowded with friends, family and people from all walks of life- became an unofficial social center of East Helena. Peg's passion for Helena High, Notre Dame and Carroll College football, along with the Cincinnati Reds, was only rivaled by her love and affection for her family, friends and husband. Family usually won- but it depended on the game.

Even though in a wheelchair in her later years, she traveled with good friends Joe Serati and Dick Anderson to Cincinnati for a game. Nobody was more pleased with Carroll College's national championship this year. Because Peg was unable to attend the game, Coach Van Diest and members of the team came to her home and presented her with a Carroll letter blanket in recognition of her longtime support.

Her brother Jim, sister Helen Clark, and husband "Fuzz, " preceded Peg in death. She is survived by her four boys Terry, Tim, Kevin and Bill, as well as grandchildren Peter, Amy, Meghan, Seamus, Sean, Conor, Matthew, Shea and Kian. Bob Clark and his children Mick, Pat, Susan, Steve and Kathy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, also survive her. Until we meet again may God hold you in the palm of His hand. So long Dear Old Sainted. We will miss you.

Visitation for Peggy will be from noon to 6 p.m. today, May 27, at Retz Funeral Home. A vigil service is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in East Helena. Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, at the church. Interment will follow at Resurrection cemetery. Memorials in Peggy's name are suggested to Carroll College Football, c/o Carroll College, 1601 N. Benton Ave., Helena, MT 59601.
