Frances Wieferich Glisan
Frances Glisan passed away peacefully in her sleep Feb. 9, 2004, at Big Sky Care Center in Helena.
Frances was born on Dec. 29, 1918, to Frank and Kate Wieferich in Canton. She was the oldest of 14 siblings. She and her sisters and brothers grew up on the family ranch in the Canton area where she attended Broadwater County schools.
On Easter Sunday in 1936 she met Russell Glisan on the steps of the Holy Cross Catholic Church when he applied for work with her dad. They were married on June 28, 1941. After Russ returned from Naval service during World War II, they made their home on a ranch in the Manhattan area.
She was involved in the day-to-day ranching activities, was an avid gardener, homemaker and a loving, caring mother to three children. She also was an active member of the Altar Society, PTA, a pinochle card club and other various community service organizations. They made their home there until 1965 when they moved to Helena.
In Helena for the past 39 years, she was involved in many different activities. She worked at Martins IGA. She continued gardening and sewing. She and Russ were founding members of a new parish in the Helena Valley, Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. She was a tutor in the HOSTS program for over 13 years, an activity she dearly loved and enjoyed. She volunteered at the Helena Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center for several years.
She and Russ enjoyed traveling and spending time with their four grandchildren. She was always ready to lend a helping hand, a sympathetic ear and prayers to anyone in need.
Survivors include daughter Karen and son-in-law Dick Bourquin of Helena; daughter Kristie and son-in-law Jimmy LaValley of Houston, Texas; four grandsons, Mike and Stacy Bourquin of Helena, Tom and Debbie Butler of Jefferson City, Brandon LaValley of Enid, Okla., and Sean LaValley of Pryor, Okla.; and two great-grandchildren, Seth and Jordan Bourquin. She is also survived by eight sisters and two brothers, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband of 56 years and a daughter, Sharon, preceded her in death.
A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, 1502 Shirley Rd. Funeral services are scheduled at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Valley on Friday, Feb. 13, 2004. Memorials may be made in Frans name to Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, or the Munger-Butler Nursing Scholarship Fund at Carroll College. Local arrangements have been entrusted to Hagler-Anderson Funeral Home, 650 Logan, Helena, MT 59601.

Jacqueline "Jackie" Everett (Kind) Short
Sept, 6, 1928 Feb. 6, 2004
Jackie passed away peacefully Feb. 6, 2004, at her home with family after a courageous struggle. She touched many people with all the love in her heart.
She loved to travel with family and friends telling many tales from her trips to the Redwoods and with her son, Steve, to Italy. Football was her favorite sport to watch, and she was a Seattle Seahawks season ticket holder for many years. Jackie went to see the Seahawks in the new stadium with a win for both, them and her. Her heart was open to many pets which came into her life. Outdoor gardening and reading were some of her passions.
Born Jacqueline Joy Everett in Saginaw, Mich., on Sept. 6, 1928, to Francis and Ralph Everett. Jackie attended schools in Kalispell, Missoula, Zanesville, Ohio, and in her junior year (1944) at Zanesville High School, Jackie was a cheerleader and set the pace for womens attire when wearing comfy slacks. In 1946 Jackie graduated from Helena High in Helena. She also graduated from the Western Union School of Telegraph, Santa Cruz, Calif., and was employed by the Montana State Highway Commission.
In 1952 Jackie married her first husband, Floyd Kenneth Kind, moving first to Coos Bay, Ore., and then settling in Pasco, Wash. A devoted mother, she raised her son Steven R. Kind, born June 25, 1955, in Pasco, and later on Olympia, Wash.
In 1966, Jackie was appointed page superviser for the State of Washington, House of Representatives by former Governor, Daniel J. Evans. After her work with the Legislature, Jackie began a career in banking where she was a pioneer in the use of computers in the banking industry which took here to Seattle in 1969.
In 1971, Jackie married her second husband, Robert R. "Bob" Short, a detective with the Seattle Police Department. With her marriage to Bob, Jackies family was increased in size by the addition of Bobs four sons Randy, Greg, Kurtis and Jeff. Along with Steve, Jackie raised Kurtis and Jeff in a home in West Seattle.
One of Jackies greatest joys was the birth of her only grandson, Stefan, born in 1980. With her boys grown and the retirement of Bob from the Police Department 1990, Jackie moved to Sequim, Wash., and a few years later to Port Angeles, Wash., to enjoy the fruits of her and Bobs hard work.
Jackie and Bob spent summers in Port Angeles and winters in the Palm Springs area with many old friends from Montana and Seattle. After the passing of her husband Bob in 1997, Jackie moved to Sumner, Wash., to be closer to her sons and grandson Stefan. In 2002 she moved to a house in Puyallup, Wash., with her son and his wife, Charlene, where she passed away.
Services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 3 p.m. in the Mountain View Garden Chapel, 4100 Steilacoom Blvd. Lakewood, WA.

Jack H. William
Jack H. William, age 76, of Lincoln, passed away at home on Feb. 6, 2004.
He was born on Nov. 29, 1927, in Bellingham, Wash., to J. Rodney and Minnie (Salsburg) Williams. He received his education in Washington. After high school he enlisted in the military, serving in the U.S. Air Force.
In the Air Force he became an electronics specialist. After discharge from the military, Jack worked for the Boeing Aircraft Co. in Washington state. He was involved with the flight testing program for the B-52 and 747 airplanes and ended his career with Boeing as a Minuteman Missile sight construction supervisor. Jack was involved in missile flight testing programs at Vandenberg AFB and Cape Kennedy.
In the mid 1970s Jack fell in love with Lincoln and made his home there for the rest of his life.
Jack is survived by his sister, Rhoda Komen, and her family of Albuquerque, N.M. Also Jack has numerous lifelong friends throughout the United States. These friendships had special meaning to Jack.
Jack enjoyed showing his family and friends Montana. He loved to cut firewood and big game hunt, but especially Jack liked to provide food to people, in his own quiet way. Jack will be missed.
A graveside service is tentatively planned for Saturday, June 12, at 1 p.m. in the Old Lincoln cemetery in Lincoln. Memorials may be given to the Lincoln Volunteer Ambulance, P.O. Box 455, Lincoln, MT 59639. Services are under the direction of Hagler-Anderson Funeral Home.

Mark E. Trafton
Mark E. Trafton, age 53, of Missoula and former Lewistown resident, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, in Missoula of an apparent heart attack.
He was born Aug. 18, 1950, in Miles City, the son of Earl J. "Tubby" and Jeanne M. (Haines) Trafton. He graduated from Miles City High School in 1967, then entered the U.S. Navy, serving until 1969. He was very active in the Republican Party and the National Alliance for Mental Illness and served as the state representative.
He is survived by his parents; one daughter, Marnie Newton, of Colorado; two stepsons, Justin Kingsfather of Vancouver, Wash., and Kory Kingsfather of Bozeman; one brother, Steve Trafton, of Lewistown; two grandchildren, three step grandchildren; and nephews and nieces.
Memorial services are Saturday, Feb. 21, in the Cloyd Chapel in Lewistown. Inurnment follows in the Lewistown City cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home of Lewistown is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to Missoula Chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness or the charity of their choice.

Denise Roe Welch
Townsend - Former Lewiston, Idaho, resident Denise Roe Welch died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, of complications of renal failure at St. Peters Hospital in Helena. She was 47.
She was born March 12, 1956, to Jim and Mary Ann Roe in Coeur dAlene, Idaho. The family moved to Lewiston where she grew up and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1974. Denise rose above her many disabilities as a result of an automobile accident in 1977.
She was a gourmet cook, and she and her brother, Mike, would prepare a free Thanksgiving dinner for the people of Townsend in their restaurant The Mint. She was an avid animal lover and people lover. Over the years she traveled extensively, including Japan and Hawaii, and went on cruises. Denise married Shane Welch May 17, 1997, at Coeur dAlene, and they made their home in Townsend.
Survivors include her husband at their home in Townsend; her mother and stepfather, Mary Ann and Harold Stelljes; a sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and Ron Lyons; a brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Rosa Roe; four stepsisters and their families, Deanna Squires, Leslie Roberts, Terri Law and Debbie Ruchert, all of Lewiston; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father. The funeral is 2 p.m. Saturday at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Townsend with Pastor Rob Gohl officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Connors Funeral Home in Townsend. A memorial service will be held in Lewiston at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Tri-State Dialysis Center, 1221 Highland, P.O. Box 189, Clarkston, St. Peters Hospital Dialysis in Helena or the Humane Society.

Elizabeth Campbell Anderson-Hill
Betty Hill, a resident of Helena from 1948 to 1995, died peacefully in Raleigh, N.C., on Feb. 10, 2004, at age 93 after a short illness. She had been a resident of the Sunnybrook Convalescent Center in Raleigh since a hip injury in January 2003.
Elizabeth Campbell Anderson was born in McKeesport, Pa., on March 21, 1910, and was the last surviving member of eight siblings who, with their widowed mother, Daizella Hampton-Anderson migrated from the Pittsburgh area to Miles City in 1911. Betty grew up in Miles City, attended Custer County Normal School, and taught country schools in Eastern Montana until she married Earl E. Hill, a highway engineer. Together, they raised three sons and lived in many Montana communities, following the highway construction projects. During WWII they lived briefly in Boise, Idaho, and Aberdeen, Wash., while Earl was working for the Civil Aeronautics Administration, building military airstrips.
After the family settled in Helena, she occasionally worked at the Montana State Legislature when it was in session and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church on Ewing Street. After the passing of her husband in 1991, she remained in Helena until 1995, when she moved to Raleigh to be nearer her sons.
She is survived by three sons: Earl E. Hill, Jr. of Annandale, Va.; Raymond W. Hill of Bagdad, Fla.; and James D. Hill of Raleigh, N.C.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, and her siblings: Helen Anderson of Pittsburgh; Ruth Lindeberg-Negus of Miles City, Francis Baker of Helena, Eugene Anderson of Butte, Max Anderson of Missoula, John J. Anderson of Townsend, and her twin, William C. Anderson of Hamilton.
Her ashes will be interred beside her husband at Sunset Memorial Gardens in the Helena Valley at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that contributions be made to the Intermountain Childrens Home in Helena.

Sister Catherine Labouré Conway
Sister Catherine Labouré Conway, age 87, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth, formerly a teacher and archivist, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at Ross Hall, Mother House, Leavenworth, Kan.
Margaret Conway was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Denver to John and Mary Griffin Conway. She entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on Sept. 8, 1935, and as Sister Catherine Labouré, made her profession of vows on June 27, 1937.
After profession, Sister was missioned to teach and taught in elementary and high schools in Kansas, Missouri and in a number of schools in Montana, including St. Helena Grade School and Cathedral High School in Helena.
Survivors include nieces, a nephew and cousins; sister-in-law, Margaret Conway of Denver. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sister Mary Stephen Conway.
A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in Ross Chapel of the Sister of Charity Mother House, Leavenworth. Mass of Resurrection will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 with interment following in Mount Olivet cemetery on the Mother House Grounds.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund, 4200 S. Fourth St., Leavenworth, KS 66048.

Mildred 'Millie' Massman
Mildred (Millie) Massman, age 84 of Pine, Ariz., passed away on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004.
Born May 6, 1919, in Clancy, she was the third oldest of 14 children born to Albert and Letha Taft. She later married and moved to Billings. She worked for many years as a hair stylist and later as a beauty school instructor. She was voted Instructor of the Year while teaching at Maddio's Beauty School in Helena. She was famous for her baked beans and potato salad.
Survivors include four daughters Loretta Lukens of Tempe, Ariz., Lorraine Stocks of Pine, Ariz., Judy Koetitz of Baltimore, Md., and Vicki Nickols of Helena. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Her ashes will be spread in the Montana Mountains that she loved.

Eugene Arthur Mack
Eugene Arthur Mack, age 68, of Helena died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at St. Peters Hospital from pancreatic cancer. He was born May 4, 1935, to John and Marie (Bubel) Mack in Ivanhoe, Minn.
He grew up in the Sixth Ward and graduated from Helena High School in 1953. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carroll College in 1960 and Masters of Education at the University of Montana, Missoula, in 1965. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1956. Eugene married Lois Jennings in Helena on Aug. 31, 1957, and they were blessed with three sons, Peter, Stephen and Douglas Mack.
He taught in Valier and Manhattan, was a guidance director in Bend, Ore., a principle in Willamina, Ore., and superintendent of schools in White Sulphur Springs from 1974 to 1984.
Eugene enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and playing bridge and pinochle. He was active in the Mobile Missionary Program, VFW Post 05609, and belonged to the Elks and Rotary.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Lois; sons, Peter Mack (Liliane) of Fort Irwin, Calif., Stephen (Kim) Mack of Helena and Douglas Mack (Dixie) of Havre; brothers, Dean (Van) and Brian (JoAnne) Mack; and six grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at St. Pauls United Methodist Church. Burial will be at a later date at the Montana State Veterans cemetery at Ft. Harrison. The family suggests memorials to St. Pauls United Methodist Church, 505 Logan, Helena, Montana 59601 or to St. Peters Foundation, 2475 Broadway, Helena, Montana 59601, or to the donors charity of choice.

Gregory J. Gorman
Gregory J. Gorman, age 43, of Helena, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at his home. Greg was born June 25, 1960, in Binghampton, N.Y., to Owen Andrew and Barbara Ann (Konkol) Gorman. Greg attended schools in Lancaster, Ohio. He came to Ashland in 1978 with his brother Owen, and then to Helena in 1984.
Greg was a very special person to all his family. He lived his whole life with seizures. Greg was a longtime employee of the Windbag Saloon where he met many friends and acquaintances throughout the years. Greg was a faithful member of the Knights of Columbus Council 844 Helena, and recently honored as Knight of the Month; the St. Helena Cathedral Parish; the OASIS Club of Helena; and the Helena Bike Club, until he could no longer safely bike. He could always be found on the SAG Wagon helping out and was always grinning from ear to ear. He helped out the Myrna Loy for many years, and he attended Brewer baseball games and Alive@5 during the summer months.
The Gorman family would like to thank all the good people of Helena who crossed paths with Greg the past 20 years. He was a very loving person who loved everything about Helena.
Survivors include his mother, Barbara Ann Gorman of Springhill, Fla.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Owen and Debra Gorman of Helena, Edward J. Gorman and Laura Lane of Cleveland, Ohio, and Patrick M. and Mary Gorman of Hilo, HI; three sisters and three brothers-in-law, Anne K. and Gene Wilson of Buckeye Lake, Ohio, Barbara Ann and Ralph Featherolf of Rushville, Ohio, and Julianna and Keith Dinehart of Chicago; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Owen A. Gorman.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 23, at St Helenas Cathedral with cremation to follow. A funeral luncheon will be held in the Cathedral Parish hall following the service. Helena Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Georgia Mae 'Cynthia' Kenney Robb
Georgia Mae "Cynthia" Kenney Robb, age 92, died at Rocky Mountain Care Center of natural causes on Dec. 31, 2003.
She was born in Clyde Park, Mont., on Jan. 7, 1911, to Thurlow E. and Lillian May (Stumbo) Kenney, homesteaders on a ranch/farm 15 miles east of Livingston on the banks of the Yellowstone River. When she was 8 her people purchased a ranch at Henrys Lake, Idaho, where she finished grade school. She then left home to attend high school and business college in Helena. Thereafter she worked as secretary and office clerk for the Montana National Guard, out of the office of adjutant general for three and one half years, thereafter moving to Los Angeles for two years.
In 1933 she met and married Wayne Alexander Robb of Idaho Falls, Idaho. They raised sugar beets on a small farm there until they moved to Salt Lake City in 1940, from whence they transferred to Hanford, Wash., in 1943, participating in the construction of the atomic energy plant there. After 14 years there, she moved to Los Angeles again, where she worked for the municipal and superior courts for 20 years before retiring back to Helena where she has lived since.
Her many interests and hobbies include playing the piano; photography, writing poetry and some narrative; gardening, cooking, sewing and raising her family, which she enjoyed very much.
She was preceded in death by her two children, daughter Nancy Anne Robb Roebuck; son Michael Wayne Robb; husband Wayne Alexander; mother and father; three brothers George, Leroy and Stephen Jerome; and one sister Jane Irene Carlson.
She is survived by two grandchildren, Susan Louise Roebuck Jonathan of Billings; Michael James Roebuck and his wife, Diane, of Woodbridge, Va.; and three great-grandchildren, Adam, Ben and Sarah; one sister Margaret Lillian Scruggs of Gainesville, Fla.; six nephews and five nieces.
Cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Memorials if any, are suggested to Gods Love, 533 N. Last Chance Gulch, Helena, MT 59601.
