Barbara Jean 'BJ' Marchi
Barbara Jean "BJ" Marchi, 82, passed away Sunday evening, Dec. 28, 2003, from complications from heart disease.
BJ was born and raised in Eureka. After graduating from the University of Montana, she married K. Ross Toole and moved to New York. She later married John Marchi and settled in St. Charles, Ill. She and John were partners in numerous real estate ventures until John died in 1989. Soon after, she retired to Helena.
BJ was committed to the arts, enjoyed the symphony and loved cultural events. Despite a 20-year battle with Parkinsons disease, she loved to socialize with her many friends. BJ enjoyed a full and varied life. She hosted a cooking show in Los Angeles, worked as a dietician in a large, urban hospital in New York City, got her pilots license, attended design classes at the Chicago Art Institute and taught elementary school in rural Illinois. She also loved to travel, taking trips to Positano, Italy, Antigua and the Caribbean and Mexico City. Her bright conversation and quick wit made her the life of the party.
She is survived by her sons, Ken Toole of Helena and Nicholas Marchi of Seattle. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Jon Marchi of Polson, Jael Prezeau of Libby, Charis Marchi of Lake Constance, Germany, and Peter Marchi of Martinsdale.
There will be a service at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at St Peters Episcopal Cathedral, 517 N. Park, followed by a reception at the Waterford on Saddle Drive. The family encourages memorials to Parkinsons Disease Foundation, 710 W. 168th St., New York, NY 10032-9982.

Jessie Brandon Hickman
Former Helena resident Jessie Brandon Hickman passed away in Denver Dec. 30, 2003.
Jessie was born Sept. 8, 1924, in White Sulphur Springs to Guy and Hattie Keene. She married Tie Brandon on Dec. 19, 1941, and they resided in Townsend, where they worked at various businesses. Later, they worked for Wellington Rankin at the Avalanche Ranch in Broadwater County and at the Birch Creek Ranch in Meagher County.
In 1954, they moved to Helena where they worked for Combined Insurance. After Tie was killed in a plane accident in 1957, Jessie moved to Denver where she had since made her home. She married Craig Hickman in 1965.
In addition to her husband Tie, Jessie was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Viola Chittim of Helena and Alta Chittim.
Surviving are her husband Craig; a son and daughter-in-law, Herb and Darlene Brandon of Richardson, Texas; several grandchildren; a sister Irene Burns of White Sulphur Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
Burial will be in the Mayn cemetery in White Sulphur at a later date. Memorials may be sent to the Shrine Hospital, 4625 W. 50th Ave., Denver, CO 80212.

Brian Eric Talseth
Brian Eric Talseth, age 19, passed away on Jan. 13, 2004, from complications due to muscular dystrophy.
Brian was born Aug. 16, 1984, in Helena to Larry and Anita Talseth. He was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at the age of five, and although it presented many hardships and difficulties for him, he attended school in Helena and graduated from Capitol High in 2003.
Brian was preceded in death by his mother and is survived by his father; sister, Jennifer; grandfather, Frank Talseth; grandmother, Colleen Talkington; aunt, Karen Schultz; aunt and uncle, Jon and Janet Pallister; and five cousins.
Brian was an outstanding young man, who in spite of his condition always kept a positive attitude, never complained, tried his hardest and never gave up. He accomplished many of the goals he set for himself, including graduating from high school even though confined to an electric wheelchair and suffering from congestive heart failure his senior year. Brian always greatly appreciated his classmates and teachers that went out of their way to make him feel at home. After graduation Brian accomplished other goals by moving into his own apartment at Queen City Estates, managing his own affairs, and even working for a short time. His family and friends will miss his infectious smile, humble disposition, positive outlook and the many lessons he continued to teach us about life.
Church services in celebration of Brians life will be at 1:30 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church, 2210 Dodge Ave. in Helena, with the Rev. Victor Berg and the Rev. Robert Ledford presiding. Interment will follow at Forestvale cemetery. Memorials in Brians name are suggested to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 2070 Overland Ave., Billings, MT 59102.

Arthur Serumgard Jr.
Arthur Serumgard Jr., age 69, of Roy, Utah, died Friday Dec. 19, 2003, from injuries sustained in a riding accident.
He was born in Helena Aug. 5, 1934, to Arthur and Mary Alice (Mitchell) Serumgard. Art grew up in Helena, where he lived until joining the Navy at age 17. He married Shirley Finch of Helena June 11, 1956. She died in Aug., 2003. In 1957 Art joined the U.S. Air Force and made it his career. Art served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He retired from the Air Force in 1978.
Survivors include his three daughters: Linda (Mac) Rose of Roy, Rebecca (Osama) Abujebarah of Roy and Stephanie (Gregg) Jugler of Idaho Falls, Idaho; one son, John Serumgard, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and one stepson, Richard (Yvette) Shanklin, of Montana; a sister, Rosemary Graveley of Helena; a brother, Siver Serumgard of San Francisco; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service has been held and burial will take place at the Veterans cemetery at Fort Harrison at a later date.

Donald Eugene 'Don' Hendrickson
Donald Eugene "Don" Hendrickson of Helena, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at St. Peters Hospital in Helena. He was born to Clarence and Margaret (Sullivan) Hendrickson on Oct. 5, 1939, in St. Ignatius.
He graduated in 1957 from Charlo High School at Charlo. Donald married Evelyn M. Seifert on Nov. 13, 1965, at Polson. Don served in the U.S. Army from July 1962 to November 1968. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Skinner Enterprises. He enjoyed cribbage and creek fishing, was a member of the American Legion Post #2 and member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Helena.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, on July 6, 1989; daughter, Traci (Hendrickson) Prevel; his parents; and brother Dave Hendrickson. Surviving him are his sons Brian and Dustin Hendrickson of Helena; granddaughter Miranda Prevel and grandson Jacob Prevel, both of Townsend; brother, C. H. Hendrickson of Spokane, Wash.; and sisters, Natalyn Moore of Spokane, Wash., and Janine Hendrickson of Charlo.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. Interment will be at the Winston cemetery in the spring. The family suggests memorials in Dons name to Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, 1502 Shirley Road, Helena, MT 59602. Retz Funeral Home is caring for arrangements.

Francis C. White
Francis C. White, age 71, of Winston, Ore., died Dec. 18, 2003, from cancer.
He was born in International Falls, Minn., Nov. 7, 1931. He married Anna Poepping, his wife for nearly 54 years, in East Helena on Jan. 3, 1950. He worked for the American Smelting and Refining Company in Montana for 40 years and moved to Winston in July 1993 after his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Anna; three sons, David (Kathleen) of Richmond, Ky., Dan (Rebecca) of Vancouver, Wash. and Dean (Josie) of Goldendale, Wash.; daughter, Janice (Nile) Oatman of Montrose, Colo.; brother Everett (Liz) of Copperas Cove, Texas; sisters Wilma (Jerry) Anderson of Rockport, Texas, Vivian (Dale ) Sanford of Roseburg, and Violet (Ray) Smith of Lincoln; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

LeRoy Glenn Bieber
Corvallis - LeRoy Glenn Bieber, age 61, of Corvallis passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at the VA Puget Sound Medical Center in Seattle.
He was born July 21, 1942, in Townsend to the late William L. and Elsa R. Beyl Bieber. LeRoy was raised and educated in Townsend and graduated from Broadwater County High School in 1961.
On Nov. 29, 1963, he entered the U.S. Army. He served as a field communications crewman serving at Fort Ord, Calif., and in Germany. He held the rank of specialist 4 when he was medically discharged on June 3, 1966.
LeRoy received a kidney transplant in October 1969 from his brother Elmer who passed away Dec. 29, 2003.
LeRoy was an active member of American Legion Post #91 in Corvallis, a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hamilton. He was an avid gardener who gave away tons of garden produce.
Surviving include his children; Lewis and fiancee Dara of Corvallis, Travis of Corvallis, Penny Johnson of Townsend and Brenda Miller of East Helena; granddaughters Kaylyn Erika Bieber of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Kameron Rall of Stevensville; wife Linda Bieber of Hamilton; brothers and sisters Mardella (Bruce) Brock of Bozeman, William (Betty) Bieber of Warroad, Minn., Irene (Allen) Brug of St. Anthony, Idaho, Elaine Lucas of East Helena, Julia Dowling of Helena, Arlene (Rick) Rader of Jacksonville, Fla., Dennis Bieber of Townsend, Gloria (John) Hasler of Havre, J. Nathan (Gwen) Bieber of Townsend, Timothy (Kim) Bieber of East Helena, Carynn (Phil) LeMieux of Helena, and Jonathan (Jan) Bieber of Helena. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Elmer.
A military funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23 at the Daly-Leach Chapel with American Legion Post 91 officiating. Interment will follow at Corvallis cemetery in Corvallis.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Northwest Kidney Center Foundation, P.O. Box 3035, Seattle, WA., American Legion Post 91, P.O. Box 205, Corvallis, MT 59828 or a charity of the donor's choice.

Davin Thomas Filcher
Davin Thomas Filcher was taken from his loving parents, Jeffrey Filcher and Kristin Harvey, to be with Jesus Jan. 8, 2004.
Davin will be dearly missed by his grandparents Tom and Carol Filcher and Michelle and David Harvey. His great-grandparents, Ralph and Helen Filcher, Bill and Alice Harvey, Richard and Elva Fodor, John Watson and Linda Clark send their prayers to our beautiful son in Heaven.
Davin was blessed to be on earth for just a short time, but he is in our hearts and eyes forever.
Big Sky cremations handled the arrangements.

Francis C. White
Francis C. White, age 71, of Winston, Ore., died Dec. 18, 2003, from cancer.

June Emily Hurwitz
June Emily Hurwitz, age 91, passed away Oct. 15, 2003, at Mountainview Memorial Hospital in White Sulphur Springs from cancer.

Pat Sullivan
Amidst the laughter and tears of her family, Pat Sullivan gently closed her dancing brown eyes on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004.
Pat was born Patricia Gertrude Elder in Missoula on Feb. 24, 1923. She was the youngest of the three daughters of Gertrude and Claude Elder, and is survived by her sisters Catherine Hughes and Lauretta Wittman of Missoula.
On the winter solstice in 1946, Pat married Daniel J. Sullivan of Butte. After both graduated from the University of Montana (Pat as a dietician and Dan as a lawyer), the couple settled in Helena. They have lived in the same home at 1312 Ninth Ave. since 1951. Pat and her Irish Catholic husband celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in December.
Pat and Dan raised five children: John (Ellie) of Helena, Michael (Charlene) of Great Falls, David (Nancy) of Great Falls, Margaret (Charles) Virag of Helena and William (Laurie) of Helena. Pat is also survived by the couples 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Three more great-grandchildren are expected this summer.
Pat's family was her mission in life. She loved them, cared for them, fussed over them, and protected them with all her heart and energy. Pat was a kind, compassionate person and a wonderful friend to many. Those who knew her particularly enjoyed the spark of her warm smile, her mischievous eyes, her staunch optimism, and the gentle fortitude of her strong and caring heart.
In addition to her husband, family, and friends, Pat loved music, her husbands roses, sales of all kinds, the Jazz Festival, taking pictures, elder hostels, the Christopher Notes, dinner out, chocolate, Miss Piggy and PBS.
A lifelong and devout Catholic, Pat was a member of the St. Helena Cathedral parish. She enjoyed being part of a venerable Helena bridge club, and in her days as a socialite was quite proud of having been a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
The family wishes to express its deepest appreciation to the staffs of The Waterford and Hospice of St. Peters Hospital for the kind and compassionate care they extended both to Pat and the members of her family.
A vigil service will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, at St. Helenas Cathedral. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Helenas Cathedral at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, followed by a luncheon in the Brondel Center.
The family requests that memorials be made to Carroll College, 1601 N. Benton Ave., Helena, MT 59601, Gods Love, 533 N. Main St., Helena, MT 59601, or a charity of the donors choice. Hagler-Anderson Mortuary was entrusted with local arrangements.

The Rev. Forrest J. Clark
The Rev. Forrest J. "Fory" Clark, age 80, of Astoria, Ore., died Jan. 20, 2004.
He was born April 2, 1923, in LaCrosse, Wis., the son of Forrest Johnson Clark and Della Johanna Hoyne Clark.
Fory was born and raised in LaCrosse. He was baptized April 25, 1923, in Bethel Lutheran Church in LaCrosse, and confirmed in the Christian faith at the age of 13 in 1936. He graduated from Central High School in June of 1941. Before enlisting in the U.S. Army Reserve Corps in the fall of 1942, he attended LaCrosse State Teachers College September 1941 to January 1943, at which time he entered active military service for the duration of WWII.
During his active service, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) in Blacksburg, Va., earning two years of college science and math credits in one year (1943-1944). Fory served with the 84th Infantry Division from the autumn of 1944 until January 1946 when he was discharged. Fory was in the Battle of the Bulge and earned three battle stars and a bronze star while in the European Theater of Operation. Following the cessation of hostilities in Europe, Fory attended Shrivenham American University in England the summer of 1945 and the University of Heidelburg in Germany in the autumn of 1945.
In February 1946, Fory enrolled at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., graduating with honors in June 1947. He then enrolled at Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary in Minneapolis, graduating in May 1950. Fory was ordained into the Lutheran Ministry on May 18, 1950. He married Solveig Dorothy Rynning Oct. 4, 1947 in LaCrosse.
Fory's first pastorate involved a multiple parish, Antigo, Polar and Pearson in northern Wisconsin. His second call was to Livingston, from 1952 to 1956. From September 1956 to 1965, he served in Spokane, Wash. From the fall of 1965 to 1975, Fory served in Helena. While in Helena, he was the Montana National Guard Chaplain for five years, receiving a medal for meritorious service.
Fory's last pastorate was at Peace Lutheran church in Astoria, from mid 1975 to 1985. He celebrated 53 years as an ordained Lutheran pastor. Following retirement he served as the Interim Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Missoula, and provided various pulpit supply assignments through the years. Throughout his ministry he strove to strengthen ecumenical harmony.
The hobbies which Fory enjoyed included reading, swimming, bike riding, camping, photography, travel, foreign languages, singing, candy making and lefse baking.
Fory served on numerous civic boards and organizations in the communities he served, as well as several committees and the Executive Board of the Pacific Northwest Synod of the LCA. For several years he was chair of the Board of Lutheran Services of Montana. Forys passion for community enrichment while in Astoria involved him on the Loaves and Fishes Board and on the committee to establish Clatsop Care Center where he spent his last few months, well cared for and loved by many of the staff. He was privileged to be invited to offer the invocation at the ground breaking for the Clatsop Retirement Village in 1999. He was also a member of the Sunset Empire Transportation Advisory Committee.
Fory desires to be remembered as "one who dearly loved his wife, Solveig of Astoria; his children, JoAnne McDaniel of Missoula; son and daughter-in-law Paul and Gogi Clark of Muscle Shoals, Alaska; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Stewart Dall of Vancouver, Wash., son and daughter-in-law, John and Kathy Clark of Lolo; six grandchildren, Sari Sandau of Missoula, Jeannette Myhre of Billings, Aaron Clark of Missoula, David Myhre of St. Louis, Mo., and Kassie Clark and Boe Clark, both of Lolo; three great-grandchildren, Blayne Sandau, Darren Sandau and Annebelle Clark, all of Missoula; brother, Eugene Clark of San Francisco; sister-in-law, Jeannette Bey of Holmen, Wis.; brother-in-law, Joel Rynning of Atlanta, Ga., sisters-in-law Helen Munson and Esther Harman both of LaCrosse; as well as the whole family of God; "The Holy Catholic Church."
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Peace Lutheran Church, 565 12th St., Astoria, OR 97103. A reception will follow the service at the church.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Peace Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, 565 12th St., Astoria, OR 97103 or Evangelical Lutheran Church of America World Hunger Fund, 8765 W. Higgins Road, Chicago, IL 60631. Caldwells Luce-Layton Mortuary, in Astoria was in care of the arrangements.
