Raymond Hunthausen
Raymond Gerhardt Hunthausen, age 47, passed away unexpectedly Friday, June 4, 2010.
Ray was born in Anaconda, November 29, 1962, to Art and Donna (Kane) Hunthausen, the fifth of eight children. He lived life to the fullest and packed more into his 47 years than most do in twice the lifetime.
He graduated from Capital High School in Helena in 1981 and attended Carroll College. He married the love of his life Tori Kall on May 18, 1985; they recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Two beautiful daughters were born to Ray and Tori - Jacqueline Christine and Allison Marie - both of Helena.
While still in high school, Ray began working at Bill Roberts and in 1985 he began working at Green Meadow Country Club. Over the next 25 years he took his life-long love of golf and made it his career. From assistant golf pro to head golf pro and general manager, Ray was instrumental in completing the master plan which developed GMCC into the premier golf course and country club it is today. With a smile on his face and a joke in his back pocket, he mentored young golfers not only in the game of golf but, more importantly, in the game of life.
One of Ray's many passions was the Harrington/Hunthausen cabin at Canyon Ferry Lake - 'Lake Serpent Lodge.' Ray greatly enhanced the cabin site, but Ray and John sometimes spent more time staging fake accidents than working. Many 'sea creatures' came to life under Ray's hands as a wood carver. Mountains, water, family and friends provided Ray with many opportunities to share his other great gift - of master story teller. All he needed was a glass of chardonnay, his legs crossed, and someone to listen. Mr. Raymond also relished time alone at the cabin, working on projects with the ultimate goal of making the lake experience the best it could be for everyone else.
Though Ray could charm any one at any age, 'my Tor, my Jac, and my Bergz' were the apples of his eye. He lent his hand to anyone who needed it and could do, make, or fix whatever was needed.
There was not a topic or subject foreign to Ray's interest, be it his dog, jet skis, golf courses, building construction, wine tasting, travel, hiking, history, or politics. In fact he read the entire set of encyclopedias at age 10 . . . well, so said Ray.
Ray was preceded in death by his mother, Donna (Kane) Hunthausen and infant brother Joseph Gerard Hunthausen.
Ray is survived by his wife Tori (Kall) Hunthausen and his daughters Jacque and Alli Hunthausen, Helena; his father Arthur R. Hunthausen, Helena; his brothers: Mark Hunthausen (Pam), Helena; Paul Hunthausen (Patti), Helena; his sisters: Kim Hunthausen Hart (Mik), Olympia Washington; Lynn Hunthausen Smigaj (Dave), Helena; Mary Hunthausen Ternes (Dave), Helena; Lisa Hunthausen Kalbfleisch, (John), Whitefish; Amy Hunthausen Lavin (Steve), Kalispell; his mother- and father-in law Marie and Bud Kall, Helena; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Jasyn Harrington (John), Helena; Valerie Kall Baptiste, Portland, Oregon; brother-in-law Scott Kall, Helena; his nieces and nephews: Robert Fischer; Haley Hunthausen; Paul Hart; Nicole Hart Waldo; Greg Hart; Stephen Hart; Lisa Hart; Sam Hunthausen; Abby Hunthausen; Amy Smigaj Reithmeier; Meaghan Smigaj; Michelle Smigaj; Anna Ternes; Ben Ternes; Dino Ternes; Kellie Kalbfleisch; Shannon Kalbfleisch; Kristin Kalbfleisch; Jace Kalbfleisch; Maura Kalbfleisch; Michael Lavin, Cassidy Lavin; Kaity Harrington; Kyle Harrington.
Ray will be deeply missed and present in the hearts and laughter of those who knew and loved him - and as Ray would say: IT WAS GRAND!
Visitation will begin Monday morning June 7th and continue to 5 p.m. Tuesday June 8th at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home. A Vigil service will be held 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 8th at the Cathedral of St. Helena. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 9th at the Cathedral of St. Helena. A reception will then follow at the Green Meadow Country Club. In lieu of flowers, Ray would have preferred donations to be made to the Raymond Hunthausen High School Golf Memorial Fund to benefit the CHS and HHS golf teams, c/o Mountain West Bank, P.O. Box 6013, Helena, Montana, 59604.

Marie Benge
Marie Benge, age 92, of Miles City passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Viola Marie Mann Benge was born February 28, 1916 in Missouri. Robert and Susie (Robison) Mann had moved to Spring Creek (Powderville area) in Eastern, Montana. They thought it better if Susie would return to family and a more settled area to give birth to her first baby.
Marie liked to learn and enjoyed taking care of her siblings while her dad and mom worked the land and livestock. Grade school was a horseback ride away. In order to go to high school, Marie boarded and worked in homes in Miles City. Marie attended Normal School at Eastern Montana College in Billings, followed by seven years of formal teaching. Marie came with her friend Lucille Bird to the Coalwood community to teach school for two years and stayed with Fred and Lois Janssen. She then taught the Divide School, which was 1/2 mile from the Benge homestead, where she met Dale. For three years she taught at the Washington School in Miles City before marrying Dale. Her second year of marriage was spent teaching Spring Creek School because their first crop was hailed out and this was a way to supplement their income. There was nothing that Marie enjoyed more than teaching children and she continued to do so as she substituted at the country school, taught Sunday School and vacation Bible School.
At the age of fourteen, Marie went behind a grain bin and asked Jesus to be her personal Lord and Savior. When asked why she went there, she says, 'I wanted to be alone because I knew that it was a personal thing. Just between God and me.' From that point on Marie studied her Bible and made a deep study of what the Bible taught that a person who loves Jesus should do. Their Pastor rode horse back to the rural areas to teach God's Word to the country people. That same Pastor taught in Dale's country church fifty miles away. By June 10, 1942 Marie was in love with Dale Benge and committed to spend the rest of her life with him. Living, working, and loving on the farm that Dale's mother homesteaded was Marie's life and a delight as she sought the Lord's counsel and His joy to fill her days. She would be the first to tell you that it was the Lord who gave her and Dale strength to meet the challenges, the wisdom to make decisions, the ability to rejoice and the One who 'created in her a pure heart and renewed a steadfast spirit within her' (Psalm 51:10.) At the time of Marie's 89th birthday, she applied this verse following a long day of celebrating. After praying she says, 'Praying just gets things right.'
Marie served as president of the Powder River Parish which was formed to unite the county as a closer church unit. She received the 'Unsung Hero' award from the state WIFE organization for work with the Agriculture in the Schools program. Supporting 4-H members, encouraging youth in music and helping a young person know their potential were delightful times in Marie's life. She also loved to dance and be a part of Dale's music. How Dale and Marie enjoyed the fairs in Broadus and Miles City. They were honored in 1996 when the Powder River County Fair Book was dedicated to them. The Coalwood Ladies' Aid and the Coalwood Community Church and their families filled Dale and Marie's lives with love and purpose. Dale and Marie loved their children and grandchildren dearly. Those families lived many miles away, so Marie would write letters and make little booklets with family pictures and family stories and send decorated molasses and apple cookies.
Dwayne Dale was killed in a horse accident when he was eight years old. Joyce lives with her husband, Jerry, on the home place at Volborg. Bruce with his wife, Beverly, live in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho and Janet with husband, Randy Ek, live in the Phoenix, Arizona area. Her seven grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren are a delight to her heart. Marie is also survived by sister-in-law Ruby Mann, sister Ethel McSweyn, brother Russell (Arlene) Mann, brother Edward (Marcia) Mann, and brother Larry Mann, Dale's sister Vera Archer, and Dale's brother Milton (Hughette) and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2003, her son, and her brother Harold.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 18, 2008 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City with family receiving friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to: Your Network of Praise, 99.5 FM Miles City, PO Box 2426, Havre, MT 59501 or to Trail's End Bible Camp, PO Box 460, Ekalaka, MT 59324-0460.
