Murrel "Bud" Braaten
Murrel Elmer 'Bud' Braaten, age 86, of Wolf Point, MT, passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2010 in Minot, ND.
Bud was born south of Wolf Point on October 4, 1923 to Marcus and Borghild Braaten. He was one of ten children in the Braaten family.
He grew up on the Sunnyside Homestead in McCone County and graduated from Wolf Point High School. Upon graduation he joined the army and served our country in World War II.
After returning from the war he married Betty Bawden in Miles City, MT on October 24, 1947. Bud and Betty lived on the Cahill farm before they moved to their own homestead just south of the river in 1951. It was there they raised their four children: Rocky, Polly, Hardy, and Bill. Bud and Betty remained happily married until her death in 2000.
Bud worked for the state highway for many years before deciding to become a full time rancher. He was also an avid Elks Lodge member and served as Trail boss for various area wagon trains.
He loved working with horses and charolais cattle. Most of all he truly loved being around his family and was always overjoyed to spend time with his grandchildren.
Bud is survived by his daughter, Polly (Wayne) Lien of Minot; sons, Rocky (Nyla), Hardy (JaeDee), and Bill (Marlyce) Braaten, all of Wolf Point; ten grandchildren, Travis (Jenny) Braaten, Trampus (Mandy) Braaten, Lonna (Jed) Sandau, TJ (Keith) Lozowski, Ryan (Shannon) Lien, Monica (Jim) Clinton, Tawnie Braaten, Hunter Braaten, Mandy (Josh) Haber, and Brady (Kiley) Braaten; and eight great grandchildren, Zack and Colten Sandau, Teal Lien, Jacob and Luke Clinton, and Treyden, Halle, and Lexi Haber; two sisters, Helen Bates of Lakeside, MT and Mary (Jo) Schrock of Seattle, WA; a special nephew, Edger Braaten of Kalispell, MT; and several other nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Braaten; three brothers; and four sisters.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. with a family service at 6 p.m. Wednesday, September 1, at the Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, September 2, at the Assembly of God in Poplar. Interment will follow at the Greenwood cemetery in Wolf Point.

Jacqueline "Jackie" Maxine Bement
Jacqueline Bement, age 81 of Lame Deer, Montana, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2003 at Saint Vincent Hospital in Billings, Montana, after a brief illness.
Jackie was born on October 28, 1922 in Miles City, Montana, the daughter of Clarence and Emma (Burns) Bement. She was raised and attended schools in Lame Deer and also attended high school at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Miles City. After her schooling, Jackie began working for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe in Lame Deer. She worked for thirty years as the treasurer for the tribe. After her retirement as treasurer, Jackie began working as the payroll clerk for the Northern Cheyenne Housing Department, which she continued until the time of her death.
Jackie was a very caring and loving person, and was seldom seen without a smile on her face. She enjoyed watching rodeos, especially team roping and always anticipated calving season, wanting to see the first-born calf of the year. Jackie loved her family, and raised her granddaughter Bobbi Ann as her own.
Jackie is survived by her daughter, Alice Carlyne Wolf Black of Billings, MT, her granddaughter, Bobbi Ann Old Crow and great-granddaughter, Crystal Lynn Old Crow of Forsyth, MT, her sister, Camille Duffy of Billings, MT, her brother, Carl Bement of Lame Deer, MT, and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers; Jesse and Mickey Bement and a sister, Geraldine Bement.
A Rosary service will be held on Sunday, December 28, 2003 at 6:00 P.M. at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Lame Deer. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 29, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Lame Deer. Interment will be held at a later date. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Forsyth is in charge of the arrangements.

Peggy Klamm
Peggy Klamm, age 78, of Miles City passed away on Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at the Holy Rosary Health Center.
Peggy was born in Helena, Montana on December 30, 1924 the daughter of Herman and Eva Mary (Janssen) Hedrick. She attended school in Billings and graduated from Senior High School in 1942. She enlisted in the United States Navy where she served during World War II. She married John F. Klamm, Jr. in San Pedro, California on December 14, 1945. Following Peggy's discharge, they returned to Miles City where she has lived since. Peggy worked at Holy Rosary Hospital, Montgomery Ward, Red Rock, and then for the VA Hospital. She retired from the VA in 1990. She was very active in the First Baptist Church; she enjoyed gardening, cooking, and enjoyed spending time with her family. She also loved making Christmas cookies and canning.
Peggy is survived by a son, Jacob 'Jake' Klamm and his special friend Linda Wiedeman of Miles City, MT; four daughters: Linda Klamm of Sun City, CA; Mary Geering of Miles City, MT; Anna Brandt and her husband Rick of Miles City, MT; and Leslie 'Barney' Scanlan and her husband Karl of Menifee, CA; eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John F. Klamm Jr. in 1999, a son John L. 'Tuffy' Klamm in 1971, and brothers: Les Hedrick Jr.
Visitation will be held Friday in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery with full military honors. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice.

Michael Thomas McMahon
Michael Thomas McMahon, a talented, capable, intelligent and fun loving man was born in Helena to his loving parents, Gene and Peggy McMahon on December 20, 1963 and died on May 17, 2010 in the arms of our Lord and Savior. Mike was the third of four children. He shared many memories on Jackson Street with sisters; Maureen and Margie and brother Jim.
Mike has a brick with his name on it in front of the Central School, earned a Helena High School diploma in 1982, and his post secondary degrees from the University of Montana in 1986 and 1990. Mike loved sports and he shined on the baseball diamond, the football field, and the basketball court. He developed many lasting friendships and memories because of these opportunities. A favorite memory was the winning touchdowns he ran in during the cross-town rival games against Capital in a come from behind win. Mike was fond of saying "Number 22 in your program number 1 in your heart."
Prior to completing his MBA, Mike worked as a store manager for Sherwin Williams, both in Helena and Denver. While studying for his MBA, Mike met Shannon, the special and beautiful daughter of Vinnie and Shirley Velk of Havre, Montana. Mike and Shannon were married at the Cathedral of St. Helena on June 6, 1992. Mike purchased 20 acres of land on Helena's south hills and with the fantastic help of his dad, Gene, he worked to build the home that he shared with Shannon and their children. Mike shared his December 20th birthday with his first child, Kaitlin Nicole, who was born in 1995. His son Brian Anthony was born on March 15, 1999.
In 1990 Mike began working for the Montana Department of Transportation and later transferred to the Property and Supply Division. He also worked for Touch America and later, after receiving his Professional Management Certificate, he worked as a senior project management consultant for Sabot Technologies.
Along with his knack for home building and handy work, Mike was a avid golfer, hunter, skier, fisherman and rabid University of Montana Griz fan. Go Griz!
He is survived by his wife Shannon and children Kaitlin and Brian; his parents, Gene and Peggy McMahon (Helena); in-laws Vinnie and Shirley Velk (Havre); siblings, Jim (Whitefish), Margie (Helena), Maureen and spouse Randy Mannix (Helmville), and their children Neil, Joe, and Danny, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends. Mike was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, Pat and Madge McMahon, Aunt Tricia Milewski and Tony and Margaret Zugel; Uncle Larry, Aunt Jeanne, and cousin David Zugel.
Visitation will continue at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home through Monday, May 24 until 4 p.m. A vigil service will be held Monday, May 24, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. with the Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at 10:00 a.m., both at the Cathedral of St. Helena. Pallbearers for the service will be Mike's brother Jim; brother-in-law Randy Mannix; cousins Jim, Kevin, and Tim McMahon; friends Gene Walborn, Alan Hulse and Steve Austin.
Donations can be made to the Kaitlin and Brian McMahon education trust fund in care of Sabot Technologies, 845 Great Northern Blvd., Suite 201, Helena, Montana 59601 or to a charity of your choice.

Rita Murray
Rita Ilene Murray, age 79, of Miles City, formerly of Missoula, MT passed away at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City surrounded by the love of her family on October 20, 2006.
Rita was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota on August 13, 1927 to Albert and Viola (Lindsey) Oeffling. She attended Holy Angels grade school and graduated from Cathedral High School in St. Cloud Minnesota. Rita went to St. Benedicts and to General Hospital where she became a x-ray technician. She moved to Miles City to work as an x-ray technician at the Garberson Clinic. On September 19, 1949 Rita and William F. Murray, Jr. were married at the Sacred Heart Church in Miles City. In 1973, the family moved to Billings, MT and then to Missoula in 1975, where they lived for eight years. After Bill's passing, Rita moved to Port Angeles, WA. In 1998, Rita returned to Missoula where she lived until May of 2006 when she returned to Miles City to be near her family.
Rita was a devoted wife and mother. She loved to read daily, especially her prayer books. No matter where she lived, Rita was always involved in her church and bible studies.
Rita is survived by seven children; Thomas Murray of Tulsa, OK, Susan (Dan) Hollowell of Miles City, Tanis Eckart of Miles City, MT, Eric Murray of St. Cloud, MN, Lindsey (Karl) Henderson of Winona, MN, Erin (Ezekiel Williams) Murray of Denver, CO and Rosemary Murray of Cheney, WA, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, one sister Joanne (Kogie) Becker of Monticello, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband William, her parents and a sister Donna.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 22, 2006 with a prayer service at 6:00 pm at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, October 23, 2006 at 11:00am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Rite of Committal will be held in the family lot of St. Mary's Catholic cemetery in Missoula, MT on Friday, October 27, 2006 at 2:00 pm.

Geraldine J. Nelson
Geraldine J. Nelson, age 97, of Miles City passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2005 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Geraldine was born in Holmes, Iowa on January 23, 1908, the daughter of Bert and Victoria (Worra) Johnson. That year, the family moved to a homestead in North Dakota. Geraldine attended a rural school in Billings County and then furthered her education in Stark County, getting her Bachelor Degree in 1932 at the Dickinson State Teachers College. She taught school in the Missouri Slope area for twenty some years, taking time out to serve in the Army during World War II. Geraldine and Nels were married on April 4th, 1947. They ranched at Williston, North Dakota before moving to Montana. Geraldine was baptized in 1908. Her confirmation was in 1921. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary #1579.
Geraldine is survived by her daughter, Serena Cottrell of Cleveland, OH; a grandson, Troy Cottrell of Cleveland, OH; two brothers: Dr. Zach Johnson of Salmon, ID; and Loering Johnson of Tarriffville, CT; eleven nieces and nephews and nine great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, two brothers, and two nieces.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Veterans Section of the Custer County cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Rosary Extended Care, 2600 Wilson, Miles City, MT 59301.

Daniel A. Paul
Daniel August Paul, age 79, of Miles City passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at the Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City of a heart attack.
Dan was born on August 6, 1930 in Ryder, North Dakota to Charles and Edna (Goodrich) Paul. He attended school in Wilton, North Dakota and also Hopkins, Minnesota. Dan enlisted in the Army at an age younger than anyone should be asked, and he proudly served in the Pacific Ocean. In 1948, he married Deloris Lee in Bismarck, North Dakota and they celebrated 60 years together. To this union, 5 children were born.
Dan started out as a surveyor with the Bureau of Reclamation to go on to work for 30 years, ending as a powerline construction inspector. During those years, Dan and his family lived in Bismarck, ND, Miles City, MT, Phoenix, AZ, O'Neill, NE, Garretson, SD, and back to Miles City following the Hydo Electric Powerline Construction work he loved. After retirement, he continued to work in the same capacity in the private sector.
Dan was a lifelong avid sportsman enjoying hunting, fishing, target shooting and snowmobiling. He was an active member of the VFW and served as commander for four years.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Alvin. He is survived by his loving wife Deloris; daughters Patricia (Steven) Garback of Pony, Montana; Kathy (Dan) Drueke of O'Neill, NE; Jeanette (Mike) Keter of Colorado Springs, CO; Lori (Scott) Herr of Mount Vernon, WA; a son Danny of Sherman, SD; and a sister Ione (Bill) Danley of Hopkins, MN.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, September 17, 2009 with family receiving friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 18, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Eastern Montana State Veteran cemetery with full military honors provided by VFW Post 1579.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Custer Rod and Gun Club, P.O. Box 303, Miles City, MT 59301.

Ernest "Stub" Holum
Ernest 'Stub' Holum, age 93, passed away Saturday May 8, 2010 in Billings, MT
Ernest was born on July 31, 1916 in Enid, MT to Andrew and Mae Holum. He grew up in the Sidney/Savage MT area helping his dad farm on the Hall place near Savage and then, during the war, farmed with his brother-in-law Jack Gray on the Lalonde place. From there he moved on to construction with his brother Doc and brother-in-law Jack Gray working on the Lalond Hotel in Sidney, the REA building in Sidney and Fort Peck Dam.
Stub's career took him many places including Terry, Great Falls, Billings, Hardin, Libby, Conrad and finally to Colstrip in 1973.
He met Roberta Conway while working in Hardin and they were married on June 4, 1961. Together they raised two children and two special children.
Stub retired in 1982 and in the spring of 1983 he returned to work the 'turnaround' each spring which he did until 1991.
He cared for Roberta after her diagnosis of breast cancer until she passed away in July of 1994. He was too lonely to sit at home so he began going down to 'Culver Entertainment' which became his new job. He could work at his own pace while there but still insisted on his Union coffee breaks at 10:15 and 2:15.
Stub enjoyed being with family and children, cars, rodeos and bull riding (spectator only), car races and bump 'n runs. He was a Colstrip High School basketball fan ('Thank you' Colstrip Sports Network). He was also 'Project Supervisor/Inspector' for all of his children's projects. He loved his desserts and ice cream and a beer at the end of the day.
Stub was a member of the Carpenter's Union for over 50 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Roberta; brother Elster (Doc) Holum; sisters Doris Evans and Alice (Earl) Wilson and nephews Johnny and Lavern Wilson and Bobby Conway.
He is survived by his children Greg (Lorna Folda) Holum and three girls and Shelly Holum; two special children Livie (Mike) Sample and their five children and Jimmy (Raelynn) Geurin and their five children; sister Myrtle Gray; nieces and nephews Gary (Diana) Gray, Pudda (Marvin) Henderson, Johnny Gray, Arlene (Johnny) McCurdy, Denise (Mark) Baune, Dennis (Sandi) Conway and Deryl Conway and brother-in-law Robert Conway.

Calvin S. Melbourne
Calvin 'Ike' Samuel Melbourne Sr., age 64, of Brockton, MT passed away Saturday, June 12, 2010 in Billings, MT, surrounded by loving family due to natural causes.
Calvin was born to Thomas War Bonnet Melbourne and Bessie Joans Melbourne on July 30, 1945. He grew up and attended school in Brockton, MT. Ike worked for H.I.P. program in carpentry, A and S Industries, and he was a custodian for Brockton School. He also did seismography for a period of time and he was a farm hand.
He was a good pitcher in baseball and loved the game as he got older. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, watching basketball games on T.V., going to casinos, family gatherings, cruising around, and visiting with friends and family - teasing everyone that he knew. Ike also rededicated his life to the Lord.
Ike will be missed and is survived by his sisters, Rebecca Clark of Poplar, MT, Susan Cheek of Brockton, MT; an uncle, Joseph Jones of Oswego, MT; grandson, Derrick Fasthorse of Wolf Point, MT, who he raised; great grandchildren, Treyton and Kolby Fast Horse of Wolf Point, MT; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great- great grandchildren, that loved him very much.
He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Bessie Joans Melbourne; and a son, Calvin 'Kelly' Melbourne Jr.; brothers, Samuel and Thomas Melbourne Jr.; sisters, Faye, Thelma, Martha, Wilma, and Peggy Melbourne; his long time companion, Joan Fast Horse; numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
Ike was adored by each and everyone one of us. We will miss you.
A Vigil Service will be held 7 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2010 at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Poplar, MT. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday, June 21, 2010 at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Poplar, MT with Fr. Francis Schreiber as Celebrant. Interment will follow at the Riverside Catholic cemetery in Riverside, MT.
Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Iris Smith
Iris Louise Smith was called to the Lord on November 26, 2003. She had tested positive while in the Poplar Hospital with West Nile Virus earlier in the year and had a lasting struggle with the virus.
Iris was born April 7, 1933 to Maynard and Louise Hall of Martin, South Dakota.
She grew up around South Dakota. While visiting relatives in Circle, MT she found she liked the Wolf Point area. Upon landing there, she met and married Malcolm 'Mick' Smith. There were married January 3, 1955, in Miles City, MT. They made their home north of poplar where the family ranched. Upon arrival of Valarie Louise Smith in November of 1956, Iris was busy with being a homemaker, supporting and encouraging Mick and Val up and down the road on the rodeo circuit.
In 1966, Iris went to work at the Poplar hospital as a nurse's aide, where she enjoyed the O.B. department, helping to bring newborns into the world and caring for the new moms.
Whenever the phone rang at the nurse's station, ninety percent of the time, it would be Iris there, ready to help, as she was with any project or fundraiser for the hospital. She was always there until her retirement in April of 2002.
Iris enjoyed playing cards, making crafts, but especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Her husband Mick, daughter Valarie Smith, granddaughters Kelly Lambert and Jessica McClammy, great grandchildren Kylie, Sarie, and Ethan, survives Iris. She is also survived by cousins Mav Everspecher of Harrison, NE, and Dennis Miller of Portland, OR, an aunt Doris Miller of Portland, OR, sisters-in-law Louise Smith and Rosie Grainger, nieces Vina Smith, Janet Smith, Edna Wetsit, Iva Grainger, Darlyn Grainger, Christine Brand (Joe), and Mary Nesbit (Jim); nephews Eddy O. Smith, Eddie H. Smith, Dale Smith, Paul Smith, Gary Grainger (Jackie), Steve Grainger (Valarie), Bob Trinder, Chuck Trinder, and John Grainger (Feryl).
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 30 at 2 p.m. at the Poplar Assembly of God Church. There will be a luncheon following the service. Iris wanted her ashes scattered in the hills where she lived.
