Curtis Garver Finnicum

LEWISTOWN - Curtis Garver Finnicum, 72, of Lewistown, passed away peacefully at his home on Jan. 7, 2000, after a long illness.

Curt was born Nov. 21, 1927, in Sidney, the ninth of 10 children of Bernie and May Holt Finnicum.

He was raised on the family farm between Mona and Andes and schooled in Mona and Culbertson. He entered the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and was stationed in Japan immediately following World War II. After his discharge as a sergeant, he returned to Culbertson where he worked for Standard Oil Co.

In 1948, Curt was united in marriage to Betty Jo Wix. After 45 years of marriage, Betty Jo preceded him in death in 1994.

Curt and Betty resided in Culbertson where their first three children were born; Linda in 1949, Curt in 1951 and Peggy in 1957. The family then moved to Lewistown where he ran the Standard Oil Bulk Plant. There Curt and Betty's last three children were born; Boyd in 1959 and their twin boys, Mark and Michael, in 1961. The family home has been on Cedar Street for the past 40 years.

Curt was central Montana's State Farm agent for 25 years. "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there" and Curt was always there for his neighbors, friends and family.

Curt raised all of his children to have a strong work ethic, loyalty to family, to stand up for their principles and to always use good common sense.

Curt loved to golf and was most proud when his sons, and then his grandchildren could beat him on the golf course. Curt always made sure that the littlest grandkids caught the biggest fish and everyone enjoyed going out with Curt and Betty Jo on their boat on Crystal Lake. He loved his evening drives along Spring Creek to count the deer. At home, his neighbors can testify that if his lawn mower wasn't running - it must be winter and that noise outside was the snow blower.

Curt Finnicum is survived by his children and their spouses, daughter Linda and Phil Westbrook of Lacey, Wash.; son Curt of Shepherd; daughter Peggy and Mark Rowe of Ronan; son Boyd and Mary Finnicum of Colstrip; son Mark and Jackie Finnicum of Douglas, Wyo.; and son Michael and Carin of Colorado Springs, Colo. He is survived by his grandchildren, David, Danielle, Jacob, Caitlin, Joseph, Calina, Chere' and her husband Chris Anderson, Bradley, Bryan, Sara, Boyd Jr., Michelle, Curtis John, Krista, Taylor, Tanner, Troy and Caylene. Curt was great-grandpa to Jesika (Bebe) Brianna, Tyler and Taylor Nicole. His sister and brother-in-law, Alfay and Gene McCracken; his sister, Mary Horne; and two sisters-in-law, Montana Finnicum and Thelma Marchwick, survive him. He also will be missed by Betty Jo's family; and his numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was loved by all.

Curt was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Bonnie and Edith; and brothers, Bernie, Jack, Boyd, Bernie Jr. and Thomas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Meals on Wheels Program, 307 W. Watson, Lewistown, Mont. 59457.
