Linda Lee Coates
Linda Lee (Zimmerman) Coates, age 54, of Miles City passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City.
Linda was born September 27, 1949 in Missoula, Montana, the daughter of Jack Thomas and Dorothy Alice (Kirscher) Zimmerman. She attended the Rattlesnake Valley and Hellgate High School. As a teenager Linda was active in a horse riding club "Rattlesnake Riders" and was Treasure State Charity Horse Show Queen One year. Wilderness horse packing with her family was a favorite pastime of Linda’s. She graduated from the University of Montana in 1971. Linda taught English in St. Ignatius and in 1983, she moved to Miles City where she became the Librarian at Custer County District High School.
In Miles City, Linda was active in the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Habitat for Humanity, Human Rights Alliance, and the Montana Education Association. Linda was an avid Cyclist and participated in the Peaks to Prairie Race. Linda loved to hike and bird watch.
Linda was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Sterling; her father, Jack T. Zimmerman; and a sister, Thais J. Garetson. Linda is survived by her husband, Ladd Coates of Miles City, MT; her mother, Dorothy (Kuscher) Zimmerman of Phoenix, AZ; her sister, Gail Smith and her husband Ronald of Phoenix, AZ; her nieces: Megan Charles of Phoenix, AZ; Jenika Garetson of Hong Kong; and Casee Chaney and her husband Andrew of Phoenix, AZ; her nephew, Dan Smith and his wife Meriah of Phoenix, AZ; great nieces: Haylee & Emilie Chaney and Rylie Smith; a brother-in-law, Thomas Garetson and his wife Mary of Hong Kong; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 in the chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Miles City. Interment will be held at a later date in the family lot of the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Daniel Sterling Memorial Fund at First United Methodist Church, Miles City Public Library, or to Holy Rosary Hospice.

Alice Dawes
Alice Burneice Dawes, age 100, of Jordan, MT passed away at the Garfield County Health Center on March 6, 2005.
Alice was born on November 3, 1904 on the family homestead near Galena, in Hayes County, Nebraska to Edward and Mary (Fowler) Snyder. She helped her family farm driving a four horse team in Wauneta, Nebraska. She attended school through the 10th grade in Country Schools. On January 29, 1927, Alice and James H. Dawes were married in Holyoke, Colorado. They moved to Douglas, Wyoming in the early 30’s where they farmed, ranched and raised their six children.
Alice enjoyed having her family around, and being their biggest fan, was always encouraging them to do better. She took one day at a time and did what she had to do. Alice was very thoughtful and always willing to help. She kept everyone in line, even on her 100th birthday we still knew who was in charge! Alice loved roses, and did beautiful handy work. She loved to get mail, travel, read and work puzzles.
Alice is survived by her son Dewane (Donna) Dawes of Riverton, WY, daughters; Alta Jean Menard of Nampa, ID, Mary Alice (John D.) Murnion of Jordan, MT, her sister Margie Shibly of Groveland, CA, twenty grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband James in 1957, her parents, her son Bobby Jo Dawes in 1982, two daughters Sara Jones in 1998 and Virginia Edwards in 2005, one brother Marvin “Bud” Snyder, two sisters; Hazel Snyder and Ethel Scriven and four grandchildren; Brian Edwards, Susan Dawes, Tom Menard and Corky Edwards Murnion and two sons-in-laws; R.W. Menard and Fred Edwards.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 from 3:00pm to 7:00 pm at the Chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Jordan. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at 11:00 am at the VFW Hall in Jordan. Burial will follow at the Douglas Park cemetery in Douglas, WY on Thursday, March 10, 2005 at 1:00 pm.
Memorials may be made to the Garfield County Rest Home; 103 Leavitte Ave, Jordan, MT 59337 or to the charity of ones choice.

Mildred Maxine Thomas
Mildred Maxine Thomas, age 95 of Miles City, Montana, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2004 at the Friendship Villa Care Center in Miles City.
Mildred was born on January 15, 1909 in Ewen, Michigan, the daughter of Benjamin J. and Winifred (Wilcox) Thomas. As a child, Mildred was baptized in the Episcopal Church and remained an active member throughout her life. As a young child and teenager, Mildred traveled often to Escanava, Michigan to visit a favorite aunt. She also visited the Eagle River area in Wisconsin to visit numerous cousins and relatives. Mildred’s mother, Winnie, died when Mildred was a young girl, leaving her father to raise an only child. When Benjamin relocated to Miles City in the mid-1940’s, Mildred accompanied him to Montana.
Upon Mildred’s arrival in Miles City, she worked as a bookkeeper for many years. She worked at the local KOA campgrounds for over twenty years doing office work, parking trailers, and any other chore that was needed. Mildred was a hard worker and it was during her work at the KOA that she made a good friend in Cheri Porten.
Mildred was a gregarious and ambitious woman who loved to visit. She was active in the local Rebecca’s Lodge in Miles City until the area chapter closed. Mildred was known for her handiwork. She crocheted beautiful doilies and sewed all of her own clothes. She was always impeccably dressed in beautiful dresses, pants and shirts.
Mildred lived on her own for many years but many loving friends surrounded her. She grew very close to her neighbor, Patsy Bickle, whom was a daily visitor until Mildred moved into the nursing home. Mildred continued to travel back to Wisconsin every five years or so to visit her distant cousins. Mildred had a special dog named Toby, whom she loved dearly. She was very attached to her little poodle dog.
She is survived by her cousins, Jeanne Gabert of Appleton, WI, Neala Kay Benson, of Ames, IA, and Matt Lawrence. She is also survived by her close friends, Cheri Porten, Patsy Bickle and Jean Vetch. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will begin on Monday, August 9, 2004 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 1:00 a.m. at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Vernold Jordan
Vernold Jordan, age 78, of Miles City passed away on Thursday, April 07, 2005 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Vernold was born in Baker, Montana on May 18, 1926, the son of Lewis and Elizabeth (Green) Jordan. He attended schools in Baker and worked for area farms. He worked a short time in Seattle, Washington and married Erna Junkert on July 24, 1943 in Vancouver, Washington. Vernold and Erna returned to Montana where he went to work for Montana Dakota Utilities at Little Beaver Compressor Station, 30 miles southeast of Baker. He moved into Baker, living there until 1981. He continued his employment with MDU at Hathaway as plant manager until 1988 where as he retired and moved into Miles City where he resided since.
Vernold loved to help his family with whatever they needed from remodeling to helping his grandson.
Vernold is survived by his wife, Erna Jordan of Miles City, MT, two sons Dave Jordan and his wife Deb of Billings, MT, and Steve Jordan and his wife Carmen of Broadus, MT; two daughters Linda Hurley and her husband Jim of Baker, MT, and Vicki Clear of Miles City, MT; two sisters Shirley Barth and her husband Reinhard of Baker, MT; and Luella Lintvedt and her husband Charles of Othello, WA; ten grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren. Vernold was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Virgil Jordan.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 11, 2005 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Custer County cemetery.

Ashley Cantrell
Our angel, Ashley Dawn Cantrell-LaRoque, went to be with our “Creator”, the Lord on June 25, 2005.
She was born December 7, 1997 in Poplar to Robyn Hernandez and Virgil Cantrell, Sr. but has been adopted and raised by Don LaRoque. She attended school in Poplar and completed the first grade where she made a lot of special friends who loved her dearly.
Ashley is survived by her mother Robyn and her father Don LaRoque; two brothers J. J. Cantrell and Ethan LaRoque; two sisters Mia and JaCinda LaRoque, all of Poplar. She is also survived by grandmothers Mavis Hernandez, Verbena (Royce) Savior, Faryl (Carlos) Pedraza of Poplar, Julia Hernandez and Evelyn Hernandez of St. Ignatius, Agnes Gun Hammer of St. Ignatius, Neva Loudermilk (Grandpa Jim) of Billings, Joan Smith of New town, ND; grandfather Ron Hernandez of Dixon; uncles Chad (Sheila) Hernandez, Conrad Scott, all of Poplar, Chris Yellow Hawk of Rocky Boy, Newton (Donna Cantrell) of Poplar; aunties Margaret (Ralph) Hernandez, Elayne Scott, Sylvia Cantrell, all of Poplar, Georgianna Smith of New Town, ND, Rose Ann Cantrell of Wolf Point; special aunts Michelle Aimsback and Florence Loves Him of Poplar and cousin Carmen Cantrell. Also surviving are special friends Maxine (Joe) McPherson, Allison Failing, Kathy Hess, Sue Frantzick, Karen Extrom, and Mr. Hammon and special medical personnel Dr. Marron of Great Falls, Dr. Peggy D’Hara, Dr. Marchant, Michelle Bebe, Sue Snitker, Loretta Taylor. She is also survived by other grandmas, grandpas, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends to numerous to mention. She was preceded in death by great-grandmothers Artie Crazy Bull and Margaret Matt Hernandez, great grandfathers Toby Scott, Carmen Hernandez, Sr.; grandfathers Carmen Hernandez, Jr., Sam Savior, Otto Cantrell Sr., Jerry Smith Crazy Bull, and one sister Deanna Eder.
Ashley touched many lives and was loved by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 1, 2005 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Poplar beginning at 7 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 2 at 2 p.m. with interment in Poplar cemetery with a feed to follow at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Donna Warner
Donna Warner, age 79, of Red Lodge formerly of Forsyth, passed away on Monday, October 4, 2004 at the Beartooth Hospital and Health Center, Long Term Care, in Red Lodge, MT.
Donna Mae Warner was born May 11, 1925 to Arnold and Rose Thoemke. She lived in Forsyth, MT until she graduated from high school. In 1947, she returned to Forsyth and married Mickey Warner, where she lived and raised four children.
Donna loved to sew, crochet, play cards and travel. She was an avid fisherman and enjoyed working in the family garden. Donna worked for the public (county) health department for many years and enjoyed the many people she met. She also enjoyed going to Arizona for the winter. Donna and Mickey sold their home in Forsyth in 1994 and moved to Laurel. She moved into the West Park Village Retirement Center in 1997 where she was well taken care of. In 2001 Donna moved to the Beartooth Hospital and Health Center facility, Long Term Care, in Red Lodge. She enjoyed the love, joy and laughter of the staff that took very good care of her.
Donna was preceded in death by her husband Mickey (1997) and her daughter Bonnie Goodian (2003). Survivors include her sons Arnie Warner (Melody) of Broken Arrow, OK; Tim Warner (Denise) of Red Lodge, MT; Matt Warner (Cathy) of Helena, MT; 11 grandchildren; Christi Hines, Curtis Warner, Timmy Warner, Shanda Brown, Kendrick Goodian, Erin Felker, Michael Warner, Guy Warner, Robbyn Warner, Alex Warner, Austin Warner and one great grandchild, Christian Hines.

Priscilla Bowers
Priscilla Elberta Bowers, age 83, of Lame Deer, Montana entered in to rest on March 30, 2005 at the Billings House & Rehab. in Billings.
Priscilla grew up and was educated in Pennsylvania. Following her college she moved to Rocky Boy where she began her teaching career. She later moved to Lame Deer where she continued to teach. Priscilla retired from education in 1988. Following her retirement, she continued to work for the Trading Post and later at the Dull Knife College Adult Education. She was involved in education for 50 years.
Priscilla enjoyed being outdoors watching birds, astronomy, archeology, Montana history, collecting rocks, reading and being a member of the Elder Hostel. She also enjoyed the times she had visiting with her grandson, Cameron.
She is survived by her foster daughters, Mary White Wolf and Beverly Walking Eagle; her sister, Jessica O’Donnell; her grandchildren Johnita Whiteman, Cornelius Whiteman, Catherine (Frank) Tallbull Whiteman, Realyn (Steve) Brady Whiteman, Angel (Danny) Lei Becker, Dani Suex Walkingeagle, George Walkingeagle; her great grandchildren, Cameron Russell Jr., Jontay Roubideaux, Xavin Owen Tallbull, Dathanyel Brady, Riley Becker, Colby Becker, McKenna Becker and Jaden Walkingeagle.
Priscilla is preceded in death by her foster daughter, Grace Miller Lei; her brother William Bowers Jr., Conrad Bowers and AC Bowers; her sister, Louis Bowers, Jane Aughey, Ethel Aughey and Susannah Jesson; and her grandson, Jace Whiteman.

Hazel Hanson
Hazel M. Hanson, age 94, of Ashland went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at the Powder River Manor in Broadus following a short illness.
Hazel was born on the farm out of Beach, North Dakota on March 12, 1911, the daughter of John and Anna (Barttles) Vinquist. She was later joined with two brothers, Howard and Lester. As a child Hazel enjoyed riding horses. She attended a country school through the 8th grade, then graduated from high school in Beach. Hazel then attended Dickenson Teacher School for two years and received a teaching certificate. She taught in several country schools in North Dakota. She also attended Eastern Montana College to get her Montana teaching certificate. She then came to Ashland to teach the lower grades. She met Edward Hanson and after World War II they were married on June 9, 1946. They had two sons, Harold and Gary. They owned and operated Hanson Service, Red Horse Service and the Lazy FZ Motel. Hazel moved to the Powder River Nursing Home in 2001.
Hazel was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader and was active in the Ashland Community Church and Ashland Sweet Rocket Garden Club. As a family, they enjoyed summer trips to the mountain lakes out of Cooke City. She also enjoyed knitting dishrags which she had given out over 200 of them to friends and visitors. She also enjoyed playing Bingo, reading, and visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a deep faith in the Lord and enjoyed reading the Bible.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Hanson, her brothers: Lester and Howard Vinquist, and a grandson, Marc Hanson. She is survived by two sons: Harold Hanson and his wife Norma of Ashland, MT and Gary Hanson and his wife Debbie of Big Timber, MT; five grandchildren: Brent Hanson and his wife Julean of Shelby, MT; Tary Hanson and his wife Jill of Colstrip, MT; Amy Delgatty and her husband Jason of Manhattan, MT; Jay Hanson and his wife Belinda of Big Timber, MT, and Jamie Nevin and her husband Todd of Kennewick, WA; ten great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 27, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hillside Alliance Church in Ashland. Interment will follow in the Willow Crossing cemetery in Ashland.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Powder River Nursing Home in Broadus.

Marilyn Kay Wright
Marilyn Kay Wright, age 57, of Spearfish, died peacefully at her home after a thirteen month battle with cancer.

Marilyn was born in Belle Fourche, South Dakota to Jack and Margaret (Williams) Mills of Boyes, Montana. She attended rural school at Boyes and graduated from High School in Broadus, Montana. After attending Dickinson State and Black Hills State Colleges, she developed the first elementary physical education program in the Belle Fourche school system, and taught elementary physical education in Belle Fourche for seven years. On July 25, 1977, she married Jim Wright and they raised four children. When her children were raised, she cared for her mother.
Few could compare to Marilyn in generosity. All who knew here will miss being remembered on special occasions including: Birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, graduations, births and every holiday. But what will be missed most of all is the friendship she extended to everyone she met. Her home was open to family, friends, neighbors, and strangers alike. Once she befriended you, it became a lifelong companionship. During her own battle, she prayed for others with cancer, rejoicing in the victories, and mourning in the defeats. She will not be forgotten, but will be missed and mourned by many.
Marilyn is survived by her husband Jim, four children and four granddaughters: Julie (Shannon) Rolando of Spearfish, Jill Wright of Boston, Genie (Charles) Bouck of Okinawa Japan and Jimmy Wright of Boston. Her granddaughters are Anne-Marie Rolando, Kate Bouck, Alissa Bouck and Hannah Bouck. Also surviving is her mother, Margaret (Williams) (Mills) Schmaus of Cascade, MT; two brothers: Jack “Slug” Mills (wife Mary Anna, “Poppy”), and Steve Mills (wife Cicelia, “Sis”), all from Boyes, and one sister, Vivian Deleo (husband Ben) of Cascade, MT, as well as many nephews and nieces.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her father, Jack Mills; and grandparents: Louis and Anna Trucano and Roy and Bessie Williams.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 30, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mountain View Baptist Church on Exit 12 in Spearfish, SD with Mark Fuhr officiating. Burial will follow at 4:00 pm at the Boyes cemetery in Boyes, Montana with a reception at the Boyes Community Hall to follow.

John Michael Arp
John M. Arp of Staten Island, New York, formerly of Poplar, Montana ended his journey on earth and has awakened to find eternal peace and happiness in Gods light. John was born on August 24, 1956 in Poplar, Mt. to Audrey Magnan Arp and Forest Lee Arp. He traveled extensively around the world while working as lead accountant for the Ice Capades. Most of John’s employment centered on accounting and being a comptroller for various companies, he also worked for the Fort Peck Tribes, and accounting was his expertise. John was also an Author, and enjoyed writing as a past time. He lived and went to school in Poplar during his youth, later moving to California then to Staten Island, New York where he lived until his death.

His father Forest Arp and his mother Audrey Magnan Arp, his aunt who loved and raised him, Isabelle “Cissy” LeVay, preceded him in death. He is survived by two uncles, Phil (Olive) Magnan of Carson California, Pete LeVay, sister, Debbie (Gerald) Johnson, a brother Donald (Bonnie) LeVay all of Poplar, and his newly found relatives of the Arp family in Oklahoma and Texas. All John’s relatives from the Magnan, Christian, Bemer, Johnson and LeVay Families, numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren and never forgetting all his friends in Poplar and New York.

John, knowing you and having you choose me as your sister, has really been a privilege and honor. I will miss you, and forever treasure in my heart all our memories, and the songs you sang to me, love is eternal. Until we meet again, You’re Sister, Debbie.

Ralph Sumer
Ralph William Sumer, age 75, of Miles City passed on October 12, 2005 at his home in Miles City surrounded by his loving family.
Ralph was born on July 29, 1930, the son of William R. "Buster" and Vivian (Martelle) Sumer in Miles City, MT. He was the oldest of three children, including his sister Margie and brother Lee. Ralph was raised in the Tongue River area where he attended schools. When he turned 17, he asked his parents to sign for him, and he joined the United States Navy, serving on the USS Henry W. Tucker DD 875. Ralph served from 1947 until his honorable discharge in 1950. On July 8, 1951, he married Leora "Jean" Hamre and they had three daughters; Debra, Penny and Pamela.
Early in his marriage he worked at Haley’s Grocery and also as a Sweetheart Bread man. He later supervised the dairy barn at the Pine Hills School for Boys and also at the US Range Livestock and Experiment Station. Ralph taught A.I. Schools and work for ABS and later for Select Sires. Working for Select, he was one of their to sales men, and earned a trip to Switzerland in 1973.
Ralph had many hobbies and loves that kept him busy. He was an avid coin collector and took great pride in presenting his three grandchildren silver dollars, representing their birthdays. He enjoyed leather stamping and making his own bullets for hunting season. Ralph enjoyed hunting and fishing, and if it meant he could take off in his 5th wheel camper, he was there. Following his retirement, he spent a lot of time woodworking and traveling. Ralph was a member of the COPS Program, RSVP and also did crossing guard duties at Lincoln School until last year. He served on the Custer County Water Board for over a decade.
Ralph celebrated his 75th birthday on Friday, July 29, 2005 and he was married to Liz Linhart on the following day, Saturday, July 30, 2005. Even thought their marriage was a short, their happiness was great.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister, his wife Jean and daughter Pam. He is survived by his wife Liz Sumer of Miles City, daughters; Debra (Tim) Puckett of Denver, Co and Penny (Tom) Schmidt of Lampoc, CA and his three grandchildren Camille, Wendy and Nicholas Schmidt all of California. He is also survived by his step-son Charlie (Laurie) Linhart, of Dayton, WY and children Ashleah, Chase, and Alyssa of Dayton, WY and a step-daughter Charlotte (Simon) Loumer of Billings, MT.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 14, 2005 at the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2005 at 11:00 am at the Grace Bible Church in Miles City, MT. Interment will follow at the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.
If desired, memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice.

Ray Earsley
Ray Elmer Earsley, 75, of Miles City passed away on May 29, 2005 at the VA Nursing Home in Miles City.
Ray Elmer Earsley was born on October 19, 1929 to Sylvester W. Earsley and Ester (Powell) Earsley. Ray was raised and attended school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin until the eighth grade. Ray then went to work to help provide for his family. When Ray was 19 he would enlist in the Marine Corps where he would serve three and half years. After leaving the service, Ray would marry and have three children with his wife. Ray then moved to Montana where he worked on the Terrett Ranch from 1966-1983. In 1984 Ray would go to work at the Range Riders Bar where he cooked and shined boots. Ray became well known for his knowledge of leather care. Ray would then go to work at the Trails Inn where he continued to shine boots and began to repair cue sticks.
Ray enjoyed fishing and being around his close family and friends.
Ray is survived by his daughter, MaryAlice Goetzinger; two sons, long time friend Pat Niles; three sisters; two brothers, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside Services will be held on Friday June 3rd, 2005 at 9:00 a.m. at the Eastern Montana State Veterans cemetery in Miles City.
