Marvin H. Brookman
Marvin H. Brookman, one of the PRCA’s oldest stock contractors and a Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame inductee, died at the Harada House in Wolf Point, MT on January 23, 2006, at the age of 92. He was born to Clyde and Wavie Brookman on September 10, 1913.
Brookman resided in the Benrud community north of Wolf Point and enjoyed living a cowboy’s dream. He married Doris Mann in June of 1935. In April of 1936, his first daughter, Cleita, was born. In 1936, Marvin joined the Cowboys Turtle Association, which is now known as the Professional Rodeo cowboys Association. He served as a pickup man in the 1930’s. He enjoyed being a cowboy and a part of the Western Heritage. He has supplied stock to every National Finals Rodeo, except one since its beginning. In May of 1939, his second daughter, Reita, was born. He provided stock for the Wolf Point Wild Horse Stampede since 1941. He loved the rodeo life and watching his horses buck.
In June of 1960, Reita married Jim Reinhart and they together worked with Marvin on the ranch tending to the livestock and farming needs. That same month and year, Cleita married Jim Ashley and later moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where Jim was stationed in the Air Force.
When the Wolf Point Stampede celebrated its Diamond Anniversary, he was named the grand marshal. The Stampede Grounds was renamed to the Marvin Brookman Stadium in 1992. He was inducted into the ProRodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, CO in July of 2005.
Marvin’s passion was to drive around in Ol’ Dent (which he had many of) and watch his horses and bulls roam the prairie and watch the new prospects be born. His greatest thrill was to watch them grow and then perform at the rodeos. While watching or chasing his livestock, he always managed to find the biggest snowbanks, mudholes, or rock piles to be stranded in, often leaving the family pushing or walking home to seek help.
His wife, Doris, and his son-in-law, Jim Ashley of Tyler, AL, a sister, Clarada Mann, and his brother, Bruce Brookman, all of Wolf Point, preceded him in death.
