Merle Ballard
Merle Gordon Ballard, age 66 of Forsyth was born on October 29, 1938 to Lyle and Ethel Crawley Mitchell Ballard. It just so happens that he was born in Forsyth in the house next door to the home he spent the last many years of his life.
He lost his right arm when he was 10 years old, but did this stop him? Oh, no. He learned how to swim, he broke horses, he drove semis, He roped calves and cows, he rode a motorcycle and an ATV and he was a drover in the Great Montana Centennial Cattle Drive in 1989. Many people were not aware that he was an amputee.
Merle grew up in and around the Vananda area, attending school there until the family moved to a ranch on Sarpy Creek in 1948. He attended the Hysham School and graduated from Hysham High School in 1958. Merle played on the football team while in school. He spent his life as a real cowboy. He worked on his folk’s ranch, was the District Rider for several years and he even did a couple of stints on dude ranches in the west. He ranched on Sarpy Creek and was ranching at Vananda at the time of his death.
Merle married Barbara Bassett in 1967 and to this union, one fine daughter, Peggy was born. They were later divorced.
As Merle got a little older (and wiser!), he decided he didn’t want to be bucked off horses anymore so he really slacked off on the riding. He continued to ride his ATV but we all think more slowly than he used to.
He passed away at about 7:30 AM on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at Holy Rosary Hospital after a very brief illness.
Merle is survived by his daughter Peggy Hillman from Hermosa, SD; two grandchildren, Casey and Lacey Styer; step-grandchildren, Branden Styer of Phoenix, AZ and Brooke Styer of Roy, MT; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Arlene Mitchell from Forsyth, MT and Titusville, Florida, Gary and Sue Ballard of Sarpy Creek, Hysham. He is also survived by his cousins, Floyd and Rose Ballard of Ocklawaha, FL, Deryl Crawley of Helena, MT and Cal Crawley of Colorado.

They continued to farm until the fall of 1967. After a whirlwind courtship of one month, Johnny married his best friend's little sister, Judy Gunlock, on Dec. 13, 1967.
Johnny later worked in all phases of construction from excavation to finish work. After hearing the gospel presented November 1, 1977, Johnny gave his heart to the Lord which began an interesting life journey. After a mission's trip to Haiti, Johnny felt called to attend Bible school and in 1979 the moves began. Johnny attended Bible school at Vennard College in Iowa, which led to ministering at the Reedpoint Evangelical Church in Reedpoint, Montana, the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Hardin, Montana, and the Medicine Rocks Wesleyan Church near Ekalaka, Montana. Johnny was also on staff at Beartooth Mountain Christian Ranch of Dean, Montana and the Trail's End Ranch of Ekalaka, Montana. After many moves, memories, and new friends, Johnny and Judy moved to Miles City, Montana in 2003. Johnny cherished each opportunity he found to share God's love and the gift of Christ.
Favorite stories of friends and family will most often involve hunting and fishing. As an avid fly-fisherman, Johnny was frequently heard joking that "spinnin' is sinnin'". Johnny was talented with a coyote call, and an excellent shot. He has successfully hunted bear, loved a good sneak on an antelope herd, enjoyed elk hunting, calling turkeys, and scouting for deer. Whoever he was hunting with could expect a good time. For his children, hunting trips were very special.
Frequently the jokester in a crowd, one would often hear his wife reminding him to not tease so much, and "Johnny, be nice" was heard often. He had a love for humor, and was very quick to crack a joke. When Outdoor Life's monthly article by Patrick McMannis was delivered, he was often breathless from laughing so hard.

John S. Moran
John S. Moran, age 94, hung up his spurs and took his last ride into the sunset on Tuesday, November 8, 2005 dying at home surrounded by his family and friends.

John was born on June 22, 1911 in Washtucna, Washington, to Peter J. and Nellie (Foote) Moran, and was the third of seven children. Later the family moved to Lindsay, Montana where he attended area country schools. John and Alice Brown were married May 5th, 1937 in Terry, Montana. For the first 9 years they lived in Miles City on the Tongue River where they farmed and ranched. While living on the Tongue River, they started their family. They had two boys, Loyd and Robert. They spent an additional 4 years in the town of Miles City where John was a yardman at the Miles City Sales yard. He also had a roping arena where he held many events. John put on the first three FFA rodeos for the FFA kids. In 1950, they moved to the Bitterroot Valley near Stevensville, where they made their home for 26 years, farming, ranching and growing certified seed potatoes. Although retired, John worked at the Miles City Sales yards and later rode fence and checked cattle for both Fort Keogh and the Nefsy ranches.

John was a “horse whisperer” before his time. He had a special gift with horses and broke and trained many during his lifetime. He humbly talked about a bridle-less cowing cutting and bridle-less calf roping on his favorite ‘bay mare.’ He won many calf roping events on his good horses. Until the day he died he would share his horse expertise with anyone who asked his advice. His daughter-in-law Bert proudly uses a set of spurs and bit that he designed and made in the early 1940’s.

On his return to Miles City he spent many years helping with programs with the Senior Drop in Center, and also served as president for some time. He also was involved with many other organizations and served on many other boards, including the volunteer fire department.

John was a cowboy and pioneer and lived that type of life. John was known for his photographic memory remembering all the details that happened in many events throughout his life. He always had a good story to tell. He enjoyed his garden and making his seven ingredient stew which he shared with everyone who visited. Besides horses and roping his other interests were; leather craft, metal work, and gardening.

John is survived by two sons: Loyd Moran and his wife Bert and Robert Moran and his wife Shirley; a daughter, Dawn Haave and her husband Dan, all of Stevensville, MT; a special niece Georgia Mentikov and her husband Sid, and special friends, Jerry and Rita Fischer, Stacy MacKenzie and neighbor, Fred Jeffers all of Miles City, MT, numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. After high school Kittie attended college where she received a teaching degree. She taught school in various country schools throughout this area. She was a very responsible teacher and one year she had to care for all of her students when they were all stranded by a severe snow storm that left them trapped in the school building for several days.
Kittie loved to travel and see new things. One year she and a couple girl friends jumped on their motorcycles and toured several mid eastern states, stopping along the way and working odd jobs whenever their funds ran low so they could continue on their grand adventure.

On Monday night, July 19, she suffered a heart attack after working her garden at home. She was airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Billings.
