Clarence R. “Sig” Ugrin
Formerly of Miles City, Billings and Great Falls, Montana
Clarence R. “Sig” Ugrin, age 85, of Darnestown, Maryland, formerly of Miles City, passed from this life on July 6th, 2005 from complications associated with pneumonia and Parkinson’s disease. Born January 1, 1920 in Black Eagle, MT he was the son of Croatian immigrants, Joseph Ugrin and Lucy Pancich Ugrin. Sig attended Great Falls High, graduating in the class of 1938, where his graduation ambition was “to travel.” After graduation, he worked for a brief time at Anaconda Company smelter alongside of his father, and later moved to Venice, California to attend the California Flyers School of Aeronautics at Mines Field, the site of today’s Los Angeles International Airport. On June 20, 1941 he graduated and returned to Billings and began working for Al Gillis, assembling newly manufactured Piper Aircraft. At this time, he met and married Marguerite Elizabeth Butz in Billings, Montana. During WWII, Ugrin served as a Navy flight engineer on a PBY flight boat squadron, stationed at Banana River Naval Station, Florida.
Upon completion of his tour of duty during WWII, Sig returned to Montana, and started Billings Aero Repair with his partner and former Flyer’s School classmate, Matt Zupan. With the help of Dick Logan and Al Gillis, the business in Billings did well, during a time when the aviation industry was growing rapidly. Around 1950, the partners met Walt Ulmer of Miles City who encouraged them to move their operation to Miles City. The partners agreed to give it a try, and secured a shop lease on the Miles City Airport. For about a year, the partners straddled their aviation operations between Billings and Miles City until 1951, when the occupation of Germany was ending, and masses of troops were being shuttled across the U.S. On one of those days, due to an engine problem, a military transport plane found the Miles City airport and landed, seeking a mechanic for repairs. Sig provided the repair immediately, which allowed the aircraft to depart without delay or incident. For many months afterwards, military transports landed almost daily in Miles City due to what Sig called “the scuttlebutt” among military transport pilots that “a quick turnaround and a certified repairman was available 24 hours a day in Miles City”. Due to their good fortune in Miles City, the partners agreed to close Billings Aero Repair and continue Miles City Aero Service full time in 1951. Later in the 1960’s, Sig bought out his partner who departed for a job with the FAA. Not long afterwards, Sig became Airport Manager, and from that point forward, the Ugrin family supported airport operations in Miles City for over 35 years, until 1996.
Sig was active in several professional associations. He was a member and former president of the Montana Airport Managers Association, and the Montana Aviation Trades Association, and a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. An advocate for airport safety, he was appointed by former governor Ted Schwinden to serve on the Montana Aeronautics Board in 1981, and in 1990 reappointed to serve as its Chairman for two terms. In 1996, the FAA honored his lifelong service to Aviation by presenting him with the Charles Taylor Award, named for the Wright Brothers mechanic at Kitty Hawk. The award honors aviation mechanics who have worked in the field for 50 years or more and who have brought the aviation industry forward into the 21st Century. At the end of his career, Sig held an Aircraft and Power Plant Mechanic with an Inspector’s endorsement. He also held a commercial flying license, with instrument, multiengine, flight instructor, multi-engine flight instructor, and instrument flight instructor ratings. He logged over 25, 000 flight hours throughout his career.
Sig was a lover of fishing, bowling, football and most of all, baseball. He played during his youth in Great Falls, and later as a catcher for the Billings Merchants Baseball League. Sig was the former Chairman of the Miles City American Legion Baseball program and was active in raising the funds to build Miles City’s Denton Field. He was a former member of Sacred Heart Parish, the Miles City and Montana State Chambers of Commerce, and the MSU Bobcat Boosters Club. He was active in local bowling leagues, and the Miles City Eagles and Elks clubs. Sig spoke fluent Serbo-Croat, and traveled to Yugoslavia seven times, spending time with his cousins in Bribir, Croatia, the village where his parents were born. Sig loved his Croatian heritage, which he preserved through food, music and parties, as well as regular visits with his many childhood friends and family in Great Falls and Black Eagle.
Sig is survived by two children, Greg Ugrin and his wife Kathy of Dickinson, ND and Nancy Ugrin Bond and her husband David of Darnestown, Maryland and a former daughter-in-law Linda Ugrin of Boise, Idaho. Nine grandchildren including Alexander Bond of Darnestown, Maryland, Greg Ugrin of Boise, Idaho, Paul Skeem of Petaluma, California, Valerie Mack of Dickinson, North Dakota, Garrett Ugrin of Billings, Montana, Heather Skeem Greco of Novato, California, Joe Ugrin of Carbondale, Illinois, and Nick Ugrin of Fort Knox, Ky. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Joe, Edward and Leo and two sisters, Lucille Grey and Jeanne Christensen. He was also preceded in death his son Joe in 1988, his wife, Marguerite in 1999 and his daughter Pamela in 2000.
A rosary will be conducted in the Chapel at Stevenson’s and Son’s Miles City Funeral home at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 10th. Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Church on 10:00 a.m. on Monday July 11th, with Internment at Custer County cemetery. Attendees are invited by the family to attend a gathering at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall.
If friends or family desire, they are encouraged to donate to the C. R. and Marguerite Ugrin Memorial Aviation Scholarship, c/o First Interstate Bank of Miles City, 1115 Main, P.O. Box 1237, Miles City, MT 59301.

Laura Roberts
Laura M. Roberts, age 96, of Broadus, MT passed away on Monday, January 30, 2006 at the Powder River Manor in Broadus.
Laura, a true pioneer, was born in Minneola, Iowa, to Gustav and Clara (Kay) Deitchler. Since the Deitchlers only spoke German, when Laura started first grade, she could not understand a word of English. She quickly learned English and continued her education in Iowa until her family moved to Hemingford, NE in 1920. After completing the eighth grade, she stayed at home to help raise her younger siblings. In 1981, Laura earned her high school diploma by passing the GED on her first attempt without studying.
On November 30, 1927, Laura married Russell Roberts and they had eight children, starting with Leonard in 1928 and ending with Greg in 1954. Between the two boys, six girls were born: Lucille, Margaret, Darlene, Janice, Linda and Debbie. They farmed near Hemingford, primarily raising potatoes and managed to scrape by in the 1930’s by selling cream. In 1946, Russell and Laura moved to Powder River County and purchased the Jim Catti ranch near Boyes. Except for a few years living near Ismay, MT in the 1970’s, she has lived in Powder River County since 1946.
As matriarch of a large family, Laura kept busy over the years attending sporting events, social functions and family celebrations. Very few sporting events occurred at Powder River County High School without Laura as a spectator. She also delighted in engaging in any type of competitive card or board game. Very few family members have accepted the challenge of attempting to upset the undisputed Scrabble champion. Years of working crossword puzzles had given her the added edge. She had often said, “I don’t care if I win or not, but I sure don’t play to lose!” Laura volunteered at the historical museum and nursing home, and was a member of the 500 card club and was active in the Senior Citizens. Over the years Laura has traveled extensively throughout the U.S., taking in 49 states and absorbed as much historical information as she could. Laura was famous for her cooking. Family get-togethers usually meant a batch of hot cinnamon rolls for all to share!
Laura is survived by her daughter-in-law Honey Roberts of Broadus, MT, son-in-law Don Haas of Hemingford, NE, daughter Margaret (Willis) Tipton of Billings, Jan (Lowell) Davis of Rapid City, SD; Linda (George) Morella of Broadus, MT, Deb (Gordon) Archer of Olive, MT, Greg (Mary Jo) Roberts of Terry, MT; sisters; Dolly Huff of Marysville, WA; Alta Wismiller of Alliance, NE, 24 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Russell Roberts, son Leonard Roberts, her daughters, Lucille Haas and Darlene Yarger; granddaughter Sandy Sinkie, brothers; Leo, Don, Floyd, Baldy, Ken and Buster.
