Gertrude Grimes Madler
Gertrude (Rogers) Grimes Madler passed away Thanksgiving morning in the home of her daughter in Bozeman, Montana. Present with her were her daughters Patsy Hookey and Sue Thompson and her sons in law, Bill Hookey and Phil Thompson.
Gertrude, who later used the name Trudy, was born of Irish immigrants. Her father, Bernard Rogers, a stone mason from Ballymartin, County Down, came to the United States to seek a better life in 1906. He homesteaded a half section of land near the town of Olanda (no longer there) north of Terry, close to the present day Peabody Ranch. In 1916 his sweetheart, Rose Anne McKeown, from Ireland joined him and they were married . Trudy was born on July 18, 1917. From 1917 to 1931 Trudy lived in a 2 room sod roofed basement structure with her family, including her brother, Patrick Rogers. A fire burned down the barn destroying all of the equipment her father needed to bring in the crops. The bank foreclosed on them and they were forced off the land and moved to Terry. They lived in Terry for two years, then moved to Miles City where her father got a job on the Milwaukee Railroad. Trudy was always writing poetry, even at a very early age. One of her poems “Elegy to the Unknown Soldier” was lauded by President Roosevelt on the 17th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice and she received a letter signed by him in 1935. Trudy graduated from Custer County High School in 1937. In the early days in eastern Montana Trudy taught school in Carterville (no longer there), Plevna, Baker, Ismay and later in Miles City. She married William Louis Grimes in 1943 and daughters Janna Sue and Patricia May were born. Trudy eventually raised her daughters as a single parent. She received a full scholarship to attend summer classes at Vassar College, Pougkeepsie, NY., in 1952; Trudy was one of the few women in the US to have received such a scholarship to that institution. She attended Eastern Montana College; Billings, and in 1958, graduated with a BS in education. In 1959 she became a Fulbright exchange teacher and taught school in Cardiff, Wales. While there she and other Fulbright scholars had tea with Elisabeth, the Queen Mother. At the completion of the exchange teaching program Trudy moved with her daughters to Sparks, Nevada, where she taught in the Reno School system. She continued with her education and received her Master of Education Degree from University of Nevada in 1967. In 1985 she married Bob Madler from Baker, Montana. Trudy continued to be active in the community with public speaking and at 71 years old she was voted Mrs. Senior Washoe County, Nevada. After 40 years of teaching she retired. In 1999, Trudy and her husband moved to Bozeman, Montana where she could be close to her daughter, Patsy and grand children.

Jean Kathryn Lee Zignego
1918-2005
Jean Kathryn Lee Zignego, 86, passed away at her home in Miles City on Friday, March 18, 2005, surrounded by her loving family. Jean is survived by her two sisters, seven children, eighteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, and she was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Jean was born September 21, 1918, as the first of three daughters (sisters Peggy and Jacque) born to Ida and Thomas Lee and grew up in Bismarck, North Dakota. Her adventurous spirit led her to Los Angeles, California, during World War II and eventually a date with a handsome young Navy pilot named Gustaf Joseph Zignego, ‘Zig’. Their wedding on February 4, 1944, in Los Angeles was soon followed by a move to Miles City when Zig purchased the Chrysler dealership.
The next generation began with the birth of their first son, John Lee (fiancée Doreen; Whitefish, MT), in 1946, at which time Jean declared she would never have another because she could not love any child as much as she loved her Lee, who possessed a curious and clever nature. Jean’s love proved limitless with the birth of Judith Ann (Miles City, MT) in 1947, a beautiful girl who shared her mother’s affectionate and sociable side. An everlasting friend and confidant, possessing Jean’s insatiable curiosity, arrived with the birth of Linda Jean (Missoula, MT) in 1948. Good-natured Douglas James (wife Chris; Whitefish, MT), born in 1951 with an appetite to learn, was a constant source of pride and joy. She deeply admired the strength and independence of Robert Joseph (wife Debbie; Miles City, MT), born in 1953. Mary Jill (husband John; Kalispell, MT) was born in 1954 and could always be found at the end of Jean’s apron strings and impressed her mother with her intelligence, warmth, and sociability. Finally, adorable Bruce Jay Gerard (wife Tracey; Vancouver, WA) was born in 1957; Jean’s ‘doll baby’ received her wit and loving support forged in a decade of motherhood.
As Jean’s countless friends will attest, her hospitality was unfailing and her generosity endless. Jean never made friends; Jean always was your friend. We felt as loved by her the day she died as the day each of us came to know her. She shared her home, her life, and her faith with everyone. Her gregarious nature made her an integral part of the Miles City community. Always a faithful member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church she served the Lord and her peers as a member of RSVP, St. Francis Altar Society, and the Catholic Daughters. Past president and volunteer/board member at St. Vincent DePaul Thrift Store until her death, she worked steadfastly to fund the new building where the thrift store currently resides and ensure its success.
Jean possessed a keen wit and impeccably timed sarcasm, practiced in conversation over hands of Bridge. In part, her cleverness came from an insatiable appetite for books. Jean was most known for being to-the-point and honest about how she felt; thus, conversations with her possessed purpose and substance, anointed with good humor. Her humor, warmth, and timeless attitude drew young people to her even in later years. Her days were filled with prayer, discourse with family and friends, and anything sweet, especially chocolate.
She was a devoted mother till the end of her days. What's more, she found the energy to love and support each of her eighteen grandchildren: Scott, Andrea, James David, Shea, Brittnea, Erika, Rory, Zachary, Matthew, Clint, Jessika, Nicholas, Casey, Jay, Jordan, Donny, Katie and Ellie; and three great-grandchildren: Cree, Hunter and Taylor. She instilled in them her principles of family and generosity. Her steadfastness and understanding allowed the family to weather crises and grow together. It is through decades of Jean’s love that the family can weather this crisis now. Besides making sisterhood, motherhood, and grandmotherhood look easy, Jean managed to be every family members’ best friend and counselor. Jean is now in heaven, finally reunited with Zig after sixteen years apart and waiting for the rest of us to join her in paradise after living a life as full as hers.
A vigil service will be held on Monday, March 28, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Rite of Committal will follow in the family lot in the Calvary cemetery.
Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made towards Church Masses, Holy Rosary Hospice; 2600 Wilson Street, Miles City, MT 59301, to the Miles City Library; 1 South 10th, Miles City, MT 59301 or to the charity of ones choice.
