John Brown
John N. Brown, age 73, of Miles City, Montana passed away on April 17, 2005
John was born on June 4, 1931 in Chadron, Nebraska, the son of Neil and Bernice Brown. John attended grade school in Nebraska until the spring of 1946, when the family moved to Ekalaka where he attended high school. John joined the United States Army in 1951 and served in Germany until 1953. In December of 1957, John married Carol J. Phelps. They raised five children while ranching in the Ekalaka area. Throughout his life, John was well known for his saddle making and artistic talents. He was active in Ekalaka Track and Arena, Masons, and the Sorrel Horse Patrol. He owned and operated many saddle shops in Eastern Montana and throughout Central Wyoming.
He made several state centennial saddles, the saddle for the cattle drive of ’89, as well as special order saddles for state governors. He was known for his storytelling and the love for his friends and family. He married Darlene on June 8th, 1991 in Wyoming. They moved back to Montana in 1995 where he owned and operated saddle shops in Ekalaka and Miles City.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Neil and Bernice Brown. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Brown of Miles City, MT; three sons: Buff Brown and Johnny Brown both of Wyoming, and Bob Brown of Portland, OR; and two daughters: Laurie Christopherson of Stayton, OR; and Candi Brown of Portland, OR. He is also survived by two sisters: Vernalea Kittlemann of Ekalaka, MT; and Babe Mulkey of Billings, MT and eight grandchildren.
Memorials services will be held on Friday, April 22, 2005 10:00 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City.

James H. Larson
James H. Larson, 90, died of natural causes on June 1, 2005.
Jim was born June 10, 1914; the son of Herman V. Larson and Hilda Nelson- Larson; in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Jim is survived by his wife of 68 years; Doris (Mahlum) Larson; and children; Bob (Linda) of Ft. Collins, CO; Mark (Sandra) of Havre MT.; Mary (Bob) of Cape Coral, FL. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and many close friends and relatives.
Jim was a graduate of Clintonville, Wis. High School and attended Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. His lifelong profession as a jeweler began in 1935 as manager of a jewelry store in Wheeler, MT. In 1939 Jim moved to Wolf Point and opened Larson’s Jewelry. His career as a jeweler was interrupted during WWII, when he served in the US Navy on a aircraft carrier in the South Pacific from 1943 until the end of the war in 1945.
Jim was actively involved in, and supported many civic fundraisers and projects such as the hospital and the new high school.
Jim lived his life creed, “you can’t be taking from the world all the time, you must also give back.” Some of the organizations he was actively involved in included: First Lutheran Church, Food Bank, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, Shrine Club, Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, Elks Club and VFW. He was the founding father of the Montana Retail Jewelers Association and was it’s first president. Some of his many interests included painting as well as being an avid outdoorsman.
Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church in Wolf Point, or your favorite charity.
Funeral services will be at the First Lutheran Church at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2005.
Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.

Louise Elizabeth Courchene
Louise will be inurned in the Courchene Family cemetery in Wolf Point, MT at family graveside services.
A Mass will be dedicated to her memory in Arizona and in Montana
Louise Elizabeth Courchene, known to her family as “Joni”, passed away on August 17, 2004 in Scottsdale, AZ from congestive hearth failure after a heart attack. She was born on March 5, 1911 in Wolf Point, MT to parents Phillip and Sarah (Mitchell) Courchene. Louise was married and divorced twice, to William Gagnon and Fremont Green. Louise had no children. She retired from Lockheed Aircraft Company, Burbank CA in 1975. She then moved to Scottsdale to be closer to her sister, Rosemary, in Phoenix, AZ.
Louise traveled throughout the world on her vacations. She was a devout Roman Catholic and toured the sights of the Apparitions of the Blessed Mother at Lourdes, France, Fatima, Portugal, Guadalupe, Mexico and visited Rome, Italy. She sent family members religious item and had Masses said in their honor. Her mother, Sarah Mitchell Courchene, was a member of the 1904 Fort Shaw Championship Women’s Basketball team at the 1904 Worlds Fair in St. Louis, Missouri.
Her parents and her siblings preceded her in death: Rosemary Courchene Holden, David Joseph “Chappy” Courchene, Charles Lloyd Courchene, Gertrude Esther Courchene Applegate, Dorothy Marie Courchene Smith, Marion Phyllis Courchene Hoffman, Richard Martin “Budgie” Courchene, Francis Courchene, Constance Courchene, and Evaline Courchene. Many nieces, nephews and cousins in California, Arizona, Texas, Montana, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Mexico, and elsewhere survive her.
Louise will be inurned in the Courchene Family cemetery in Wolf Point, MT at family graveside services. A Mass will be dedicated to her memory in Arizona and in Montana. The family suggests your contributions to Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Parish, 543 Dawson St, Wolf Point, MT 59201, in memory of Louise Courchene.

Joey South
Joey South, age 91, Jordan, MT passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at the Garfield County Health Center after a battle with Cancer.
Joey was born on the 9th of August, 1914 in an old log house West of Peru, Nebraska. Joey went to school until the 7th grade, then started working at age 12 for $.50 a day in Nebraska for area farmers and ranchers. In 1930, he worked for a carnival running a merry-go-round. Joey married Margaret Hardenburger on September 5, 1935. After they were married , Joey went to work for the railroad. In 1944, Joey and his brother owned and operated a mechanic shop in Miles City. Joey later went to work for the R.E.A. Electric Company running power lines south of Miles City. In 1953, the family moved out to Pumpkin Creek near Volborg, Montana. In 1962, the family moved to Jordan, Montana where Joey started his own electrical company. In 1970, they moved to Red Lodge and then to Bridger where he retired. In 2000, Joey moved back to Jordan to be near his son and daughter-in-law. Joey and Margaret had 70 wonderful years together before God called Joey home.
Joey had a love for music, making some records and playing on the Miles City Radio. He built guitars and furniture and also enjoyed painting pictures. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends who are left with many fond memories of Joey.
Joey is survived by his wife, Margaret South of Jordan, MT; sons: Jim (Kelly) South of Bridger, MT; Ken (Kathy) South of Jordan, MT; Dan (Ruth) South of Jordan, MT; daughters: Shirley (Gary) White of Boise, ID; Georgia Schmidt of Jordan, MT; Ginger (Arnie) Weber of Boise, ID; 30 grandchildren, 72 great grandchildren, 21 great-great grandchildren; 2 brothers, and lots of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, three sisters, 2 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and 1 son-in-law.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice.

Katie Wyss
Katie Wyss, age 87, of Miles City, Montana passed away Sunday, October 23, 2005 at the Friendship Villa in Miles City.
Katie was born on March 6, 1918 in Angela, Montana the daughter of Jacob and Pauline (Boschee) Haas. Katie attended schools at Angela, Montana and in Miles City. Katie married Walter Wyss on September 28, 1940.
Katie enjoyed cooking, quilting, hunting, and was an avid antique collector. Katie was well known for her bountiful gardens. She enjoyed her friends and relatives most of all. She would go to great lengths to prepare meals for large family gatherings. She loved her family and was always there to provide support to all of them.
Katie is survived by one son Jim of Idaho Falls, ID, daughter-in-law Pat Wyss of Banning, CA, grandchildren Beth Wyss of Bozeman, MT, Scott Wyss of Great Falls, MT, two sisters, Evelyn Cozzetto and Annie Macy of Spokane, WA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Katie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Walter, her eldest son Dennis, four brothers, Fred, Rudy, Adam, and Edwin and two sisters, Adeline and Elsa.
Visitation will b held on Sunday, October 30, 2005 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 31, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.

James Shoulder Blade
James Benedict Shoulder Blade II, Nahkoheo’emoko’eha “Bear Sole” age 17, of Lame Deer passed away on Thursday, September 9, 2004 from injuries sustained in a automobile accident near Lame Deer.
James was born in Aurora, Colorado at the Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center, on September 8, 1987 the son of Windelyn and Bernadette (Henry) Shoulder Blade. James was raised and began his education in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. With his family, he moved to Lame Deer at the start of his junior year. James loved the game of baseball. While in Broken Arrow, James began his baseball career at the age of six hitting his first homerun when he was eight. James played in the 13 year old World Series for Broken Arrow, making the all tournament team and placing 3rd in the Homerun Derby. As a freshman in high school, James played on the varsity high school American Legion baseball team in Broken Arrow. As a young man in Broken Arrow, James was involved in several different athletics as well as with his church, which included playing football for Oliver Middle School, basketball for the Rhema Bible Church, as well as the church choir that traveled through out Oklahoma. James was also very musically inclined, able to play the drums and the first seat as a trumpet player. Along with his parents, James traveled to different parts of the United States ministering to many people.
James is survived by his parents Windelyn and Bernadette of Lame Deer, three brothers J.R. Shoulder Blade, Timothy Shoulder Blade, Scott Shoulder Blade, three sisters Vanessa Shoulder Blade, Renessa Shoulder Blade, Contessa Shoulder Blade, his grandparents, Sadie Henry, Fern Shoulder Blade and Christine Lays Bad, Vicki Wounded, and Helen Hiwalker. He is also survived by his numerous aunts and uncles which include Elmer and Gertie Henry, Magdalene Shoulder Blade, Eddie and Francine Cut Grass, Irene George, Kathryn Shoulder Blade, Titus Shoulder Blade Albert and Clara McManus, as well as his best friend Montague Big Back and his special girl friend Donna Lynn Strange Owl, and also his many cousins friends, and special nephew Jerome Shoulder Blade.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Percy Henry, James Shoulder Blade and Julia Shoulder Blade, his cousin Kyle Jason Henry and his best friend Jesse Riley
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at 10:00 AM in the Boys and Girls Club in Lame Deer. Burial will be in the Black Hills National cemetery. A wake will be held on Tuesday at 7:00 PM in the Pentecostal Church in Lame Deer.
Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Forsyth is in charge of the arrangements.
James will be missed each day by his friends and family.

Kenneth Spotted Bird
Kenneth Vernon Spotted Bird Jr., age 36 of Wolf Point passed away July 3, 2005 at Trinity Hospital in Wolf Point after a long illness.
Kenneth was born May 19, 1969 in Poplar, MT to Kenneth V. Spotted Bird Sr. and Clara Bow. He attended school in Brockton, and worked in the Job Corp in Darby, MT., he also was a laborer and fire fighter. He loved to watch sports, especially basketball, and visiting with friends. He like to joke and tease and taking care of his cousins. Kenneth will be dearly missed.
He is survived by 6 brother; Franklin, Vernon, Kenneth and Kevin Spotted Bird of Fort Totten N.D.; Elwayne Rush of Poplar, MT; Eugene Crow of Brockton, MT.; 4 sisters; Tara, Kenda, and Janell Spotted Bird of Fort Totten N.D.; and Karla Bow of Wolf Point, MT, along with numerous other relatives.
He is preceded in death by his father and one sister; Karlene V. Spotted Bird and his grandparents.
He is survived by Grandparents; Leland (Doris) Spotted Bird of Brockton, MT.; Kathryn Spotted Bird of Poplar, MT.; Carol Spotted Bird of Brockton, MT.; Josephine Black Dog of Brockton, MT.; Mary Ann Grey Bull of Billings, MT.; Merceline Red Boy of Wolf Point, MT.; and Jimbo (Judy) Bow of Wolf Point, MT.
A wake will be held July 7, starting at 3 p.m. at the Brockton Culture Center in Brockton, MT. Funeral services will be held July 8, at 10 a.m. at the Brockton Culture Center. Interment will be held at the Fort Kipp cemetery.

Frances Clark
Frances Genevieve Clark, age 95, died quietly at her home in Miles City on May 7, 2006. She was with her family.
Frances was born in Everett, Washington on August 5, 1910, to Fred and Catherine (McLaughlin) Wilson. After her father died, her mother married Jack Reid in 1920. Frances attended grade school in Jordan and graduated from business college in Miles City. Frances was married to Samuel Timothy Clark in 1934 by Monsignor Hennessy at Sacred Heart Church.
Her first job was at the Star Printing Company. During World War II, she worked at Lockheed Aircraft in Los Angeles. She later worked at the women’s clothing stores; Epstein’s, The Specialty Shop and Sweetbriar Store. Frances was active throughout her life in the Sacred Heart Church. She belonged to Altar Society, St. Joseph’s Circle and served as a Eucharistic Minister, both in church and to the homebound. After retirement, she volunteered at St. Vincent De Paul. Frances was a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary and served as a President. She volunteered for many years at the VA Hospital. She was Girl Scout Leader, and a volunteer at RSVP, the Food Bank, and the Red Cross Blood Bank.
Frances is survived by her sister, Cassie Reid, and brother, Ray Reid, both of Miles City, and her sisters-in-law, Margaret Clark of Miles City, and Olive Lockie of Billings, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam, and sisters and brother, Louise Reid Rehbein, Annie Reid Casey, and Jack Reid.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 8, 2006 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home with a Vigil services at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church in Miles City. Rite of Committal will follow in the family lot of the Calvary cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Council on Aging, 1010 Main Street Miles City, MT 59301, or to the Convent Keepers; 1411 Leighton, Miles City, MT 59301.

Karl Hinther
Karl Hinther, age 85 of Jordan, Montana, passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at the Garfield County Health Center in Jordan.
Karl was born in Jordan, Montana on April 9, 1919, the son of John Henry and Maria T. (Koch) Hinther. He grew up in the Jordan area and entered the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) in his junior year of high school. Later he entered the U.S. Army serving as Sergeant in the European theatre during World War II. Following Karl’s honorable discharge, he returned to Jordan in 1945. Karl married Evelyn Lehner on November 11, 1942 in Miles City, Montana. Karl worked for the county for a short time on the road crew and then purchased a truck and began a freight business hauling local commodities. In 1949, he secured a permit and hauled freight from Billings to Jordan. He operated and operated a feed store at the same time also. In 1952, Karl sold his trucks and took over the operation of the new Exxon gas station and ran a bulk gas business until 1972. In 1963, Karl purchased school busses to provide bus service to the Jordan Elementary and the Garfield County High schools. He ran the bus services until 1986, when he sold them to Glen Gallinger. He and Evelyn established the concession at the Hell Creek Marina in 1971, building a store and rental cabins. He retired in 1990 after which he was able to spend more time fishing and also devote more time to his woodworking. He and Evelyn also enjoyed traveling.
Karl is survived by his daughters, Anita and her husband Joe Twitchell of Mountain Home, ID, Noreen and her husband Mike McKeever of Jordan, MT, his son Ron Hinther and his wife Denise of Circle, MT, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; Joel Twitchell and his children Bailey and Riley all of Ely, NV, Aaron Twitchell of Austin, TX, Etoile and her husband Clint Benge of Hailey, ID, Todd McKeever and his wife Annie and their daughter Ava, all of Laurel, MT, Angela Belus and her children Mitchell and Abby all of Jordan, MT, Jason McKeever of Fargo, ND, Courtney Hinther and her daughter Kayla of Bakersfield, CA, and Cara and her husband Robert Vannattan of Bridger, MT, a brother, Hilmer Hinther and his wife Irene of Billings, MT; three sisters: Leonora Brumbelow of Jacksonville, TX; Hulda Grant of Malta, MT; and Gertrude Hinther of Glasgow, MT; two sisters-in-law, Martha Hinther of Jordan, MT and Esther Hinther of Lewistown, MT; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, his parents, an infant brother, Alexander, four brothers: Emanuel, Fred, August, and Bill, and a sister, Rosie.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 21, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. at the V.F.W. Hall in Jordan. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the V.F.W. Hall. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Pioneer cemetery. Should friends wish,

Ervin L. Bigheadman
Funeral service will be on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 11:00 am in the Birney Community Hall in Birney
Ervin L. BigHeadman, age 58, of Birney, passed away on Friday, April 7, 2006 at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings.
Ervin was born the son of Frank and Dessie BigHeadman on April 5, 1948 in Birney. He grew up and attended school in the Birney area.
Following his schooling Ervin left the Lame Deer/ Birney area in 1972 when he traveled the United States and eventually settling in the Fresno, CA. While in Fresno he worked as a Tree Trimmer, Alcohol and Drug Counselor and also an A.A sponsor.
Ervin returned to Lame Deer and Birney in 1999 and was active in the community where he served on the Utilities Commission Board from 2000 – 2004. While in Lame Deer, Ervin worked as an A. A. counselor and sponsor.
Ervin enjoyed spending time with family and attending S.W.E.A.T.S and A.A. meetings.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Dessie BigHeadman; his adopted mother, Martha Woundedeye; his adopted sisters, Melvina Woundeye, Selma Woundedeye and Wilma Woundedeye; his adopted brother Melvio Woundedeye and his uncle Elmore Fighting Bear.
Ervin is survived by his children; Kim Whiteman of Lame Deer, Dessie Breed Love of Winslow, AZ, Dustin Breed Love of Fresno, CA, Fallon Breed Love of Fresno, CA, Na-Tista Breed Love of Fresno, CA; his six grandchildren, Rony, John, Krista Littlehead, Rusty and Sophie Woodenlegs and Cleve Spang; two great grandchildren, Shakinia and Rony Stevens; his brothers, Clifford Bighead Sr. and Harvey Bighead both of Birney; adopted brothers, Davis Woundedeye and Melvin Woundedeye and Clifton Sooktis; his sister, Dorothy (Bill) Jackman of Lame Deer; his adopted sister Imelda (Robert) Barney of Lame Deer, Joyce Woundedeye of Lame Deer, Veta Fightingbear, Nancy Fightingbear and Viola Washington; his aunts, Mary Ann BigHeadman Still Smoking and Nancy WhiteDirt; and his uncles, Francis Limpy Sr. and Beaver Two Moons.
