"God saw that you were suffering and a cure was not to be.

So he put His arms around you, and whispered, 'Come with me.'

With tearful eyes we watched you suffer, and slowly fade away,

Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating, hard-working hand now rest,

God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

It hurt so much to lose you, but you didn't go alone,

Our thoughts and prayers went with you, the day God took you home."

Kathryn 'Hank' Elizabeth Henry

MISSOULA - Kathryn "Hank" Elizabeth Henry, 92, of Missoula, died Sept. 25, 2000, at her home, to join "Hank" and her infant son Marshall Clement, who died in 1927 at the age of 2 months.

Kathryn was born Aug. 21, 1908, to Rudolph Kroll and Mayme McCaffney Kroll. Rudolph was killed in a train accident when Kathryn was 2. She was raised by her mom and stepdad George McCauley on the McCauley homestead in Target Range behind McCauley Butte. She loved being on the ranch, riding the horses and playing with all the farm animals. In the summer, "Mom sent me to 501 Alder to live with Grandma McCaffney to teach me manners, to be a lady and to get off the horses!"

Cooking and grooming horses were her No. 1 vocations. Fixing pot roast and apple pie was her way of giving hugs and I love you's to her grandkids and great-grandkids. "I'd rather be on the ranch," was one of her favorite things to say.

She attended the Sacred Heart Academy, where she met Marshall, and it was love at first glance. In 1926, she married Marshall in Dillon. They spent 73 years together, riding and showing their Saddlebreds in shows throughout the Northwest until she was 85. In 1942, she attended nurse's aide class at St. Patrick Hospital. There, she worked on the third floor and was ward secretary in surgery until she retired.

While Hank and Hank lived at Rainbow Stables, they cared for and trained 20-30 head of Saddlebreds. Thirty-ninth Street was a long dirt road which was a great trotting road for their horse driving, and the Safeway area was a riding ring. Many times Kathryn would be on her bay mare, Pam, rounding up her daughter from the neighbors. In good weather she'd ride her horse Pam and lead "Chubby" from Davis Street to St. Francis school to get Pat from classes - no car for this mother to get her kid. "Yes, Mom, I'll clean up the mess and feed the horse and the gate is shut."

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Missoula Saddle Club, Missoula Saddle Bags (a women's riding club) and the Missoula Humane Society.

Survivors include her daughter Katherine Patricia Henry Tonkin of Missoula; grandchildren Sam Tonkin and his wife, Rhonda, of Sacramento, Calif.; Joseph Tonkin of Sacramento; Terry Tonkin of Sacramento; Deborah Tonkin Odbert and her husband, Gary, of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; Marshall "Bill" Tonkin of Arlee; Dennis Tonkin and his wife, Julie, of Missoula; and "Putter"; great-grandchildren Cydney Tonkin of Sacramento, and Dustin, Dylan and Rick Odbert of Arroyo Grande; brother Thomas Kroll and his wife, Iris, of Missoula; sister Mary McDonald of Missoula; sisters-in-law Beatrice Rusk of Missoula and Marie Zimmerman of California; several nieces and nephews; her three Saddlebred horses and two cats.

Cremation has taken place. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4616 Gharrett, with the Rev. Mathew Huber as celebrant. A reception will follow the services at the church.

The family suggests donations to the Missoula Humane Society animal shelter, 1105 Clark Fork Drive, Missoula, MT 59807.

Arrangements are under the direction of Garden City Funeral Home.
