Richard "Sandy" Burns

Richard D. “Sandy” Burns, 67, died June 26, 2009 in Rochester, N.Y.
He was born June 15, 1942 in Missoula. After attending many schools, the family settled in Libby where he was active in football, track and his favorite – basketball.
After graduating from Libby High School, he received a four-year scholarship in basketball to Carroll College in Helena. There, he excelled on the court and developed a reputation as a top guard in the state. He was inducted into the Carroll College Hall of Fame in 1967.
After leaving college in 1964, he traveled to Rochester where he met his future wife, Toni. They were married during the summer of 1967 in Libby. He then went to work for R.D. Containers in Rochester where he drove a truck and worked his way up to foreman for the last 12 years of employment. He retired five years ago.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Toni, mother, father, stepfather and brother.
He is survived by his children, Anthony, Richard, Anna and Judith – all of Rochester; brother, Danny Burns of Troy; sisters, Patricia Hendrickson and Ida Williamson of Libby; Oneeta Stevens of Rochester, Wash.; and Kim Dutton of Kalispell; and numerous other relatives.
Services were held Friday, July 3 at Bartolomeo and Perotto Funeral Home in Rochester, N.Y. Interment will be beside his wife at Holy Sepulchre cemetery in Rochester.

Robert Andrew Grimesey

Robert Andrew Grimesey, 80, died July 4, 2009 at his home in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
He was born Dec. 8, 1928, to Andrew Grimesey and Marion Tyler in Mentor, Ohio. He attended grade school at Coleman’s Catholic School in Cleveland and junior high in West Salem, Ohio. His family moved to Newburg, Ohio in 1939 where he worked on the dairy farm and acquired a love for country life. He graduated from St. Paul’s Catholic High in Norwalk, Ohio in 1947.
Mr. Grimesey joined the U.S. Navy in 1948, became an electronics technician and served aboard the Destroyer USS Strong until 1952 during the Korean conflict. He attended John Carroll University and graduated with a master’s degree in nuclear physics in 1957.
Mr. Grimesey was a lifelong Roman Catholic and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed backpacking, hunting, skiing and traveling along with studying history, physics and foreign languages.
He married Kathleen Kromer of Sandusky, Ohio in October 1957 and they began their lives together in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Mr. Grimesey was employed at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory in reactor physics for 34 years and retired in 1991.
During his physics career he was one of two scientists appointed to a Department of Energy project at Brookhaven National Lab on Long Island, N.Y. He designed a mathematical algorithm to calculate the cross-sections of elements in the core of a nuclear reactor. The algorithm is currently in use by physicists around the world. At INEL, he belonged to the reactor physics group that created conceptual designs of new reactor systems and analysis for radiation shielding of reactor systems. During his retirement years, he advocated for nuclear power generation as a source of clean energy.
In 1997, Mr. Grimesey married Mary Jane Scouten in Libby. They lived there together until his wife’s death in 2004.
He is survived by his two stepdaughters, Heather and Holly Scouten, and his five children, Margaret Villa and Andrew Grimesey of Seattle, Wash.; and Eileen Reid, Rachel Grimesey and Logan Grimesey of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He is also survived by his first wife of 38 years, Kathleen, of Coeur d’Alene; and his five grandchildren.
A funeral Mass is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 9 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Libby. On Wednesday, July 8, visitation is from 1-7 p.m. with Rosary at 7 p.m. at Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home in Libby.
Memorials may be sent to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Verna L. Edwards

Verna L. Edwards, 97, of Libby died from natural causes on Sunday, July 5, 2009 in Libby.
She was born Oct. 2, 1911 in Plaza, N.D. to Walter and Laura Smith Barker. She moved with her family to Canada in 1927. She attended the Kingsford School.
She married Harry F. Edwards on July 17, 1936 at Stanley, N.D. They resided in various places in North Dakota as well as Sandpoint, Idaho while her husband worked on the railroad. They came to Warland in 1952.
She was a member of the First Baptist church in Libby and a member of the Royal Neighbors of America. Later they lived at Ural and at Troy.
Her husband, Harry, two brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
Survivors include her two daughters, Minnie Boothman and husband Billy Bob of Libby; Joyce Goss and husband Del of Libby; two brothers, Glenn Barker and Ralph Barker; 13 grandchildren, William (Timber) Boothman and wife Marty of Libby; Timothy (Sam) Boothman of Libby; LaVerna Thorgaard and husband Tom of Kalispell; Linda Cureau and husband Paul of Roundup; Terry Boothman and wife Cindy of Libby; Laurie Boothman of Libby; Dessie Leader and husband Ken of Kingman, Ariz.; Jeret Goss and wife Ann Marie of Musselshell; Lance Olson and wife Claire of Deer Park, Wash.; Shannon Wolgast of Brownwood, Texas; Lee Olson and wife Ruby of Holly Springs, Miss.; Rett Goss and wife Jamie of Grassrange; Tawnie Olson and husband Pat of Florence; 29 great grandchildren; and numerous great-great grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday, July 11 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Libby. Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Friday at the Schnackenberg and Nelson Funeral Home in Libby.

Kenneth Russell Davis

Kenneth Russell Davis, 79, of Laurel, Miss., died June 3, 2009 at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel.
Mr. Davis, who was raised in Libby, is the son of the late Morris and Margaret Davis and brother of Dorothy Peterson.
Graveside services were June 5 at Ellisville City cemetery (Miss.). Ellisville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Glenn E. Ryals

Glenn E. Ryals, 89, died July 7, 2009 at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital in Libby.
He was born June 20, 1920 to Austin and Alta Lula Spriggs Ryals in Gering, Neb. He was the sixth child of nine. His family moved to Everett, Wash., when he was a child. He attended Everett High School, excelled in football and was a member of the basketball team that took state in 1937.
He married Millie J. Hoag on April 16, 1940. She preceded him in death in 1990. A daughter Sally was born June 2, 1943 and preceded him in death in 1949. In 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific during the invasion of Okinawa. He had an honorable discharge in 1946.
Mr. Ryals worked for Hickey Trucking from 1946-58. He moved his family to Darrington, Wash., where he was employed by the plywood plant until 1965. While in Darrington he served as police commissioner, volunteer fireman and Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader.
After working in Marysville, Wash., with Everett Plywood and Keller Supply Plumbing, he retired in 1982 and moved to Libby to be close to children and grandchildren. He married Patricia Leader on Oct. 5, 1991.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and George Wood of Libby; daughter, Stephanie Ryals of Sandpoint Idaho; son, Steven G. Ryals of Lubbock, Texas; stepchildren, Charlotta, Richard, Kenneth Leader, Theresa Byrd, Christina Boothman; grandchildren, Brenten (Jodi) Williams; Kaylene Williams; Kraig and Jeana Wood; Shyla Lynch and Mayla Jo; Chanel (Kevin) Swartz; five great-grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren.
Visitation was scheduled for July 9 from 1-8 p.m. at Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home in Libby. Services will be July 10 at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Libby. Graveside services will be July 13 at 10 a.m. at the Cypress Lawn cemetery in Everett, Wash.

Randall E. Dusky

Randall E. Dusky, 55, of Libby died of a sudden heart attack on June 11, 2009.
He was born in Connell, Wash., on March 2, 1954 to George Kenneth Dusky and June Rosella Dusky.
Mr. Dusky lived and worked in California, Nevada, Portland, Ore., Quincy, Wash., and Libby. As a young boy, he had a large paper route and during his adult life, he worked in construction and as a house and apartment framer. He worked 15 1/2 years at Cal Neva handicapping horses – which was one of his passions. At the time of his death, he was employed at Town Pump/Lucky Logger Casino.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by brothers, Gary Dusky of Rocklin, Calif.; and George Dusky of Georgia; sister, Sue Dusky of California; and son, Sean Dusky of Cabazon, Calif.
A memorial was held at Maggie’s Casino with food provided by special friend Patricia Hendrickson, as well as Frank and Royce Hendrickson.
Cremation at the request of the deceased occurred on June 29 at Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home in Libby.

Dorothy Ek Christensen

Dorothy Ek Christensen was born Oct. 24, 1925 in Parker Prairie, Minn.
As a young girl she moved to Conrad, attended Business College in Great Falls, where she met and married Allen Christensen from Flaxville. They raised two daughters, Gail and Cathy. They lived in Valier, Oilmont, Kevin, and eventually moved to Bremerton, Wash., where they have resided since 1966.
Dorothy passed away June 15, and is preceded in death by husband Allen.
She is survived by daughters, Gail (Jim) McKibben, Cathy (Mike) Winger, six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and sister Devona (Ek) McLaughlin of Bonney Lake, Wash.
Dorothy’s ashes will be laid to rest at the Valley View cemetery in Shelby, along side the love of her life, Allen.
The family will have Celebration of Life in Bremerton, Wash., at a later date.

Vaughn Dutro

Vaughn Daniel Lin­coln Dutro, 90, died peacefully Sunday, Oct. 8, at his home with his loving wife of 66 years, Berniece at his side.
Visitations will be Thursday and Friday at the Pondera Funeral Home. A memorial vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at the funeral home. Mass of the Res­urrection will be Saturday, Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with burial in Mount Olivet cemetery in Conrad with military honors.
Vaughn Daniel Lincoln Dutro was born in Dodson, Mont., on Feb. 12, 1916 to Anna and David Dutro. He later moved to Malta and attended schools there. While in high school, he worked at the Malta Mercantile, a John Deere store.
He joined the CCCs and worked at St. Regis in a ranger lookout. He rode the rails back to Malta in time for graduation in 1936. After graduation, he worked on the con­struction of the Fort Peck Dam.
He moved to Great Falls, where he attended Great Falls Commer­cial College while working for the George G. Mill Co., a John Deere franchise. He arrived in Conrad on June 7, 1937 to set up the books and parts department at the request of Tom Noble, manager of the newly-established John Deere and Caterpillar dealership.
He married Berniece Paulus of Choteau in Great Falls on Dec. 30, 1940.
Vaughn enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1946 after the unex­pected death of his father, David Dutro of Portland, Ore.
Dutro returned to Conrad and became general manager of the Conrad Implement Co. and then became owner in 1962. In the mid-sixties he became part owner/manager of the Great Falls Implement Co., continuing for sev­eral years.
Dutro brought his son, Don into the Conrad Imp as assistant man­ager in 1979 and acquired E.P. Ekegren Co of Choteau in 1991. Vaughn sold his interest in the John Deere franchise in Conrad and Choteau in 1996 and continued to operate the Conrad Implement Co. selling livestock equipment until his death.
Vaughn was very active in community and ag-related organi­zations. He was a long-time de­voted Conrad Volunteer Fireman, became the first president of the Conrad Jaycees, was a member of the Conrad School Board from 1954-56, became president of St. Mary’s Hospital Advisory Board in 1957 and saw construction of the Pondera Medical Center in 1970.
He served as president of PMC from 1977-1983, and was a mem­ber of the Conrad Library Board from 1959-61. Together with Mayor R.G. Arnot, they organized and he became the first president of the Conrad Chamber of Commerce in 1965.
After serving several years on the board of the Montana Hardware Implement Association, Dutro was elected its president in 1975. In 1976 he was elected to the board of directors of the National Farm Power & Equipment Association for Montana until 1990. He was a member of the Agricultural Council of America, the American Legion, Montana Chamber of Commerce, Montana Health Service Associa­tion, Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, (president in 1959), Pondera Golf Club and was on the advisory board of the Helena Vo-Tech School from 1972-1983. He was a lifetime member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
In addition to countless hours of time and energy devoted to all of the above, Vaughn’s main focus was his family, the Conrad Imp, his employees, many loyal customers, and his beloved Conrad.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, Rving with Berniece and friends. They loved spending time at their cabin near Spotted Bear be­hind Hungry Horse Dam. One of his hunting highlights was bagging a large bull moose in the Bob Mar­shal. Vaughn and Berniece enjoyed many trips in the U.S. and abroad with John Deere and the Hardware Implement and National Associa­tions.
Dutro was fiercely proud of his Irish heritage, his family, and Catholic faith. He truly loved Montana and was a learned histo­rian of its history. His humor and quick wit will be fondly remem­bered. “Doot” leaves an enormous void within his family and friends.
Vaughn is survived by his wife, Berniece, daughters, Margaret Ann Lee of Missoula, Jeanne Ritchie (David) of El Cajon, Calif., Terry Dutro of Bozeman and son, Don (Mary) of Great Falls. In addition, he is survived by sister-in-law Aina Dutro of Kalispell, cousin, Eileen Scafidi of Portland, and cousin Hugh (Eileen) Smith of Belfast, Ireland.
Grandchildren include Jack Lee (Jennie) of Klamath Falls, Ore.; Vickie Vaughan Lopes, Concord, Calif.; Katie Missik, Conrad; Tricia Stokes (Joel), Valier; Michael Lee (Kendra) Great Falls; Stephanie Hansen (Eric), Thornton, Colo.; Heather Prevost, (fiancé Steve Thurston), San Diego, Calif.; Nicholas, Brian and Meghan Kno­bel, Bozeman; Hanna and Sarah Vaughan Dutro, Great Falls and 10 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, me­morials may be made in Vaughn’s honor to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Conrad Dollars for Scholars or Pondera Golf Club.

Gregory (Greg) Allen Senden

Gregory (Greg) Allen Senden, 64, died in Bend, Ore. on July 6 surrounded by his family.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on August 9 at St. Clare Catholic Church in Portland, Ore.
Greg was born in Conrad on Sept. 15, 1949 to Bert and Tony Senden. He graduated from Montana State University—Billings.
A ‘jack-of-all-trades’, Greg had a zeal for life, a sense of humor that would light up a room and an unwavering love for riding lawnmowers. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Greg is survived by his wife of almost 44 years, Ginny (McDonnell) Senden of Redmond, Ore.; son, Christian (Jessica) of Portland, Ore.; daughters; Hillary (Michael) Forrest of Bend, Ore., and Samantha Senden (fiancé, Randy Shafer) of Terrebonne, Ore.; grandson, Preston Forrest; and brothers Bob of Anchorage, Alaska and Richard of Helena.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents Bert and Tony Senden and his in-laws Eddie and Evelyn McDonnell.

Robert P. Becker

Robert Peter Becker, 72, of Great Falls, passed away at a local nursing home of natural causes on July 2.
Private family services are being planned for a later date. Cremation has taken place under the direction of O’Connor Funeral Home.
Robert was born May 5, 1942 in Alexandria, Minn., to Albert and Isabelle Becker. He grew up and attended schools in Minnesota. Robert worked as an auto body repair man for various locations until his retirement. He enjoyed being in the outdoors hunting and fishing.
Robert is survived by his brothers, Jim (Irene) Becker of Great Falls and Steve (Cheryl) Becker of Conrad; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Eugene Becker, and sister Mary Pat Becker.

Lorraine Loretta “Sweedo” Hall

Lorraine Loretta “Sweedo” Hall, 80, of Dupuyer, passed peacefully from this life with her family at her side from natural causes in Havre on June 23, 2014.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on June 26 at The Dupuyer Community Center with Father Ed Kohler presiding and burial followed at Dupuyer cemetery.

Rita Elaine Eagleman
August 14, 1949 - May 27, 2013

Rita E. Eagleman, 63, of Rocky Boy, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2013, at Northern Montana Hospital of natural causes. Wake services will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, May 27, 2013, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, and will continue until her funeral service, which will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the Eagleman cemetery. Rita was born on August 14, 1949, in Havre to Edward R. and Elizabeth (Sandine) Berger. She was raised in Havre, attending school here. She married Galen Eagleman in 1965, and their union was blessed with four children. The couple raised their children at Rocky Boy, instilling in them pride in their heritage. Rita worked at Headstart in Rocky Boy for a time. Rita was a loving wife and mother, who enjoyed listening to music and her shows (soaps and Lifetime), playing Bingo, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Elizabeth Berger; her sister Geraldine Berger; her brothers Loren Berger, Clifford Berger, and Edward Berger; and one great-grandson Ronald Eagleman, Jr.
She is survived by Galen Eageleman, her husband of 48 years; her daughters Gail (John Mitchell) Eagleman of Havre, Melissa (Victor Morsette) Eagleman of Rocky Boy, Gerry Eagleman of Havre, and Rebecca Eagleman of Great Falls; her sons Ronald Eagleman and Wayne (Christine) Eagleman, all of Rocky Boy; her twelve grandchildren; her 15 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Sandy Berger of Havre, Lauretta Azure of Chinook, Helen and Shirley Gardipee, both of Butte, and Bonnie (John) Doney and Betty DeCells, all of Havre; her brothers Larry Berger of Butte, and Ronald Berger and Bob Berger, both of Havre; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
