Bebe Leanne Berland

Bebe Leanne Berland, 58, of Conrad, passed away suddenly of natural causes on March 2 at Benefis ICU in Great Falls. Her husband Colin Veitch and niece Shannon Rossmiller were at her bedside.

Bebe was born in Great Falls on Jan. 21, 1951, to Bennie and Gladys Berland. She began life in the family home in Brady until her parents built a home in Conrad later in the fifties. Her father, Bennie Berland had homesteaded south-west of Conrad. Some of Bebe’s earliest memories included picking rock and driving their grain truck – almost before her feet could reach the pedals!
Bebe and her older sister inherited a love of music and dance from their mother, Gladys, and during their teen years, taught other children ballet and tap in a basement studio in their Conrad home.

After her graduation from Conrad High School, Bebe went to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she studied ballet and tap and then continued her dance and music studies in Kansas City. She obtained experience in musical comedy and theater and subsequently moved to California, first to San Francisco and then to Hollywood where she pursued a career in dance. She appeared in stage and screen productions with such notables as Joel Gray and Dean Martin.

Bebe married during her Hollywood years and had two children, Brandie and Taylor Carvajal. Her first marriage ended and Bebe met her present husband Colin Veitch in Los Angeles in 1984. They married within six weeks and built a life together over the next 25 years.

Bebe held a BA in Journalism from CSUN, Colin had been an advertising copywriter and journalist in New Zealand. They share many of the same interests and abilities. Bebe always said that one of the first things that impressed her about Colin was his ability to complete the L.A. Times crossword!

During the first years of their marriage, Bebe worked as a technical editor in the aerospace industry at Lockheed, Aerojet and then Hughes.

She encouraged her children to play violin, an instrument that Colin had learned in New Zealand. To the surprise of Brandi and Taylor, he could actually tune their violins for them. Brandie has continued with violin, at present teaching school and violin in Los Angeles.

Both Bebe and Colin took an active interest in Scouting. Colin was Scoutmaster of Troop 84 in North Hollywood, Bebe a Webelos Den Leader in the same troop. They also loved chili cookoffs. Members of the International Chili Society, they spent many weekends traveling their “Chili Con Kiwi” booth to cookoffs throughout California and as far south as Ensenada, Mexico. Brandi and Taylor played violin at the booth while the chili simmered in a huge iron cauldron. The team won many awards for the best booth and best performance around the booth.

They also produced an award-winning home movie, based on an idea by Brandie and Taylor. The movie, a five-minute epic entitled “Space Dog” starring both children and their German shepherd “Krypton”, won the family a trip to New York and an appearance on “Radio City Music Hall”.

Bebe could always find the sunny side of any situation. One of her favorite sayings was “when the going gets tough, the tough get going”, and she proved it time and again. During the early 1990s, the aerospace industry underwent a period of layoffs. Colin began driving taxicab in Los Angeles to help make ends meet. Bebe realized that owning a taxi would be much more beneficial, so in 1994, they went into business as the Yellow Cab Company of Santa Clarita, L.L.C. Bebe shared driving and dispatching. Bebe had always longed to return to Conrad, so after Colin retired, they sold the company and moved back to Bebe’s family home in Conrad in 2003.

On their return, Bebe established the Academy of Dance in Conrad and Choteau, teaching ballet, tap and creative dance to children ages three to 13. She held a spring recital each year at the Orpheum Theatre/Wiegand Auditorium as well as Christmas programs at rest homes in Conrad and Choteau. She also shared her mother Gladys’ enthusiasm for bowling, competing each Wednesday afternoon at the Branding Iron in Conrad.

Bebe had a love of life and people. She and Colin traveled extensively over the years. They visited Colin’s family in New Zealand, toured England and Scotland with the Veitch Historical Society, visited Norway and Sweden and cruised Alaska.

Bebe’s love of family however, came first and foremost, especially her love for her children. She was so proud of their achievements. Daughter Brandie, a graduate of LMU with a Master’s in Music. Son Taylor, Eagle Scout, Master of Science graduate of UVA, currently a USN Lieutenant serving in Iraq.

Bebe’s parents and two uncles predeceded her. She is survived by her husband Colin Veitch; sister Reba Jo Berland, of Reno, Nev.; son Taylor Carvajal, serving in Iraq; daugher Brandie Carvajal, of Los Angeles; daughter-in-law Jessica Carvajal, of London; stepsons Brenton, of New Zealand, and Lars Veitch, of China; daughter-in-law Belinda and grandchildren Jonathan and Christopher Veitch, of New Zealand; sister-in-law Carole Linley, of New Zealand; uncle Lawrence Torske, of Minnesota; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins throughout Montana and the U.S.A.

Dancer, choreographer, editor, cab driver, scout leader and dance teacher — Bebe leaves us a legacy of achievement. In life, all dreams are possible. She will be sadly missed, remembered with love by all who knew her.

Donations and memorials are suggested to Pondera Arts Council, c/o Helen Elliott, Box 564, Conrad, 59425.

Bonnie Kathleen (O’Brien) Eckstein

Bonnie Kathleen (O’Brien) Eckstein, age 89, entered peacefully into the presence of her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, on March 7. A celebration of Bonnie’s life will be at 2 p.m., March 21, at the Conrad Baptist Church, located at 110 North Wisconsin St. She was always a vital and active member of her community until the last three years, when she was stricken with the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

Bonnie is survived by her daughters: Laurel (Lance ) Nordstrom of Belfair, Wash.; Lynn (Ron) Gaines of Buckley, Wash.; son Tom of Ledger; grandsons Nathan and Dylan Nordstrom; granddaughter Christine Deschamps; and great-granddaughters Mariah and Macey Deschamps. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, and her parents, Tom and Edith (Sellers) O’Brien.
As a young girl, Bonnie accepted the Lord Jesus as her Savior during a revival meeting in Conrad. She was discipled in the Conrad Christian Church where she became a member and was involved in many phases of that ministry. She often shared the gift of her wonderful voice in singing for weddings and funerals. In later years, Bonnie was embraced by the church family at the Conrad Baptist Church.

Bonnie graduated from Conrad High School in 1937 and later from the South Bend (Indiana) College of Commerce. She was employed by Travelers’ Insurance in South Bend, and Arnots of Conrad after her return to Montana.

Bonnie O’Brien and Russell Eckstein were married in October 1945, following Russell’s return from Army service. They made their home on the family farm east of Ledger, which they later purchased. It was there that they raised their family and continued to operate the farm, until Russell’s failing health required a move to Conrad. During those years on the farm, Bonnie pursued her interest in community service as clerk of the local school board, secretary of the extension homemakers club, 4-H club leader, election board judge and assisted with Vacation Bible School in Ledger.

Following Russell’s passing in 1981, Bonnie became more deeply involved in community service and volunteer work with PMC Extended Care, Horizon Lodge, Meals on Wheels, Pondera Food Pantry and American Legion Auxiliary. She truly enjoyed the women’s afternoon bowling league and faithfully participated in the Senior Center exercise class. Bonnie was selected as Pondera County Senior Citizen of the Year in 1988.

In addition to her other activities, Bonnie traveled to various interesting destinations and particularly liked to visit family and friends.

We (Bonnie’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren) would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to all the Nurses, CNAs and Staff at Pondera Medical Center Extended Care for their loving and compassionate care for Mom and to the Nurses and Staff of Easter Seals Home Health for their assistance while Mom resided at Horizon Lodge.

A special appreciation goes to our cousin, Dawne Stokes, for her faithful concern; to Pastor Charley; to Kim and Sam; and to all our friends and family who have prayed, visited and supported Mom during a difficult time. May our Gracious Lord richly Bless You All!

For those who wish to do so, memorials are requested to PMC Extended Care, Horizon Lodge or Conrad Baptist Church, in lieu of flowers.

Henning was born in Fort Benton on April 21, 1966 to Bendt and Ruth (Lenington) Andreasen. He is survived by his mother Ruth Andreasen of Fort Benton. His two sons: Anders and Jaron Andreasen (and their mother Terrianne Andreasen) of Fort Benton. His long time love: Deb England and her daughter, Kelsey of Great Falls. His siblings and their families: Steen (Dawn) Andreasen and their sons, Dane and Toren, of Fort Benton; Anna (Robin) Cline and their children Mariah, Jared and Andreas, of Keystone, SD; Yvonne (Tim) Bintliff of Hill City, SD; Erika Andreasen of Great Falls; Nilia Andreasen of Choteau, MT; Rob (Michelle) Calkin and their children Haley and Chad of Matthews, NC and Vickie (Kirk) Reichelt and their children Austin (Breanna and Bromley) and Addison of Carter, MT. He married Terrianne Trudell in 1992, together they had two sons. They later divorced in 2007. He lived and worked the remainder of his life on the family farm and ranch north of Fort Benton. Henning loved the Lazy K6 and was proud to have his sons by his side. Henning’s sons were the absolute love and joy of his life and he was their best friend. He was their greatest fan and encouraged them in all of their sports and activities as well as participating with them in roping and rodeo. He encouraged them to pursue their dreams and raised them to be strong and loving like him. Henning loved to hunt, cook, travel, team rope and play cards. He would like to think he was as good of a poker player as he was a pinochle player. Henning had an infectious (sometimes inappropriate) sense of humor and a giggle none of us will ever forget. He was unable to avoid making friends or already having friends wherever he went. He was stubborn and hard headed, intelligent, hard- working, kind, funny, loving, influential, unforgettable and his family meant the world to him. We are devastated and will forever miss him. We are also very thankful for the brief time we had him in our lives. Please join us at the Fort Benton High School Gymnasium for a celebration of Henning’s life on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 2:00pm. A reception will take place immediately following the services in the Commercial Building at the Chouteau County Fairgrounds in Fort Benton, MT.
