Judith Chapman
(August 3, 1945 - July 5, 2013)

Judith A “Judy” Chapman, 67, formerly of Helena died Friday of cancer at the home of her daughter. Services will be held Thursday at 3:00 PM at Pondera Funeral Chapel in Conrad. Cremation will take place following the service. Chapman is survived by daughters, Anne (Rusty) James, Helena, and Leya (Kevin) Johnson, Conrad; son, Michael (Judy) Chapman, Boise, ID; sisters, Mary Ellen (Nick) O’Dell of Helena, Susan (Don) Olinger of Galesberg, IL, Shelley Kruckenberg, Helena, brother, David Simpkins, Helena; 4 grandchildren, Jesse James, Zach James, Amber Johnson and Willie Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband William “Bill” Chapman in 2000, parents, Frank and Marie Simpkins, sister and brother in-law, Janice and Jorge Wood, and a brother, James Simpkins. For those planning on attending the funeral, the family requests you bring a bouquet of garden flowers to place in vases provided, as these were Judy’s favorite.

Ava Mullennax
(April 18, 1918 - July 6, 2013)

Ava G. Mullennax, 95, passed away July 6, 2013 in Conrad, where she had lived for 49 years. She was born near Kane, Wyoming, third child of William and Clara Sproul. Ava is survived by a daughter, Gail Mullennax Hein, of Billings; three sons, Earl and his wife Diane of Salt Lake City; Thales and his wife Vivian of Conrad; Jay and his wife Gail of Brady; ten grandchildren, thirty-three great grandchildren, and sixteen great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; son, Gary; son-in-law, Keith Hein; and grandsons Earl “Chip” Mullennax and Bruce Hein. Graveside rites will be 2 pm Friday, July 12, at Conrad cemetery. Pondera Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Windy Hankins
(Died May 26, 2015)

Windon "Windy" Grant Hankins, 63 died May 26, 2015 in Fort Benton. Memorial services will be Friday, June 12, at 11am at First Christian Church. Windon was born November 30, 1951 to Joseph and Betty (Velk) Hankins. He graduated from Fort Benton High School. He worked for the family logging company in Townsend where he met the love of his life, Roberta Queen. They married in Fort Benton in 1976. Later in life he worked for Royce Applegate in Square Butte and for Mountain View Co-Op in Fort Benton. He is survived by his mother, Betty (Velk) Hankins Of Carter, brothers, Joseph (Diane Kummer) Hankins of Fort Benton, Craig Hankins of Townsend, Robert Hankins, Stanley Hankins, and Calvin ( Wendy Hodges) Hankins all of Fort Benton; son, Robert "Skeeter" Chovanak; and granddaughter, Crystal Chovanak. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Queen Hankins, father, Joseph Hankins, daughter, Lonnie Chovanak, and grandson, Justin Hansen.

Margery Melby
(Died June 2, 2015)

Margery Mae (Sten) Melby, 89, went home to join her Lord on Tuesday June 2, 2015 surrounded by family. Services will be held Tuesday, June 9th at 1:00 at Pondera Valley Lutheran Church. A reception at the church will follow interment in Hillside cemetery. Margery “Marge” was born November 16, 1925 to Albert and Ada (Nelson) Sten in Webster, South Dakota. She grew up in the Waubay S.D. area and graduated from Waubay High School in 1944. Marge attended college in Aberdeen, S.D. earning her teaching degree. She taught school in South Shore, S.D. for 2 years. While waiting for a bus to Watertown to go shopping she met Lester Melby. The next winter Lester was again in Waubay and, at the suggestion of Margery's mom Ada, gave Marge a ride back to South Shore! The rest is "history". Margery Sten and Lester Melby were married on November 16, 1947, Margery's 22nd birthday. They celebrated almost 50 years together. To this union were born 8 children. Margery and Lester lived on the homestead farm near Kremlin until the winter of 1954 when they moved to town! In 1964 Lester moved his family to Conrad after purchasing the Gambles store. Margery worked at the Gambles store, Home's Cafe, and the Pondera Medical Center/Nursing Home. Margery was active in the Pondera Valley Lutheran Church, AAL, Steven Ministries and Amway. She loved family, music, reading, crosswords, crocheting, embroidery and making quilts. Her first quilts were made from old uniforms that she saved from her years of working. She crocheted many beautiful baby sweaters and caps for Lutheran World Relief. Margery is survived by daughters, Carolyn (Dave) Widhalm, Marilyn (Jim) Gottfried, Barbara (Andy) Otteson, Lila (Tim) Dolezal; sons, Albert(Nancy) Melby and Mark (Chris) Melby, one sister, Alice Thielke; 25 Grandchildren, 33 Great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester; sons, Carl and Alan; grandson, Austin Jacobson; brother, Albert Sten, Sisters, Gertrude Kurtz and husband, J. Francis and Shirley Slaathaug and husband, Dennis; brother-in-law, Ed Thielke; and special niece, Nancy Kurtz Peterson. Memorials can be made to Pondera Valley Lutheran Church or the organization of your choice.

Eddie Leonard Falla
June 8, 2015

Eddie Leonard Falla died on June 8, 2015 surrounded by his family. Vigil services will be Sunday, June 14, at 7pm at Pondera Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be Monday, June 15, at 10am at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Mt Olivet cemetery. Eddie was the son of Maurice and Eva (Schwan) Falla. He was born in Havre on November 21, 1943. He grew up and went to school in Inverness. Eddie worked for various farmers in the Inverness area. He spent two years in the U.S. Army. Eddie worked at Boeing in Seattle before coming to the Conrad area where he worked in the oil fields. He met and married the love of his life, Eileen (Rifenberick) Jochems on July 5, 1974 and helped her raise her four children as his own. After working in the oilfields, he was the roll-off site attendant until his retirement. Once retired, he loved fishing and working with wood, his favorite being diamond willow. He made many canes and furniture out of diamond willow. Ed enjoyed creating furniture out of any used wood he got his hands on for his kids and grandkids. He spent many hours at the community garden and taking care of his yard. He is survived by his wife, Eileen; their four children, Joe (Selina), Lisa (Adam), Dale (Cathy) and Monica (Jeff), all of Conrad; sisters, Beverly Moog of Inverness and Julia White of Texas; brothers, John (Cathy) Falla of Washington and Tom Falla of Montana; 12 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Cole; and two brothers-in-law, Vern Moog and Randy May. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Community Cancer Foundation, PO Box 743, Conrad, MT 59425.

Jane Johnson
(Died June 6, 2015)

Jane L. Johnson passed away at her home in Brady on June 6. Graveside services will be held on June 24 at 11 a.m. at the Hillside cemetery in Conrad. Jane was born on Aug. 8, 1958, to Quentin and Marjorie Indreland in Harlowton. Jane was preceded in death by her father Quentin. She is survived by her mother, Marjorie Indreland of Harlowtown; her brothers, Neal (Sally, Gregory, Kari, Kelsi, Rocky, Kinley, Dally, and Kasen) and Roger (Betsy, Anne, Schyler, Brooks, and Kate). Neal and Roger both reside in Big Timber.

Gail Ellen King-Schlosser

Gail Ellen King-Schlosser, 58, passed away Tuesday, July 7. Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 14, at 2pm at Pondera Valley Lutheran Church. Burial will take place Wednesday, July 15, in Anaconda. Gail was born February 8, 1957 in Paoli, Wisconsin to Thomas and Doris Hartmann. She was raised and attended school in Anaconda. Gail graduated from Anaconda High School in 1975. She married Ralph King on December 4, 1976 in Valier. They later divorced. Gail went on to attend Northern Montana College in Havre and graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with Reading Specialist Endorsement. She married Jim Schlosser on June 4, 1991 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Gail started her long teaching career in Conrad as a high school title 1 aide from 1988 to 1989. Gail spent the next 22 years as an elementary school teacher at Meadowlark School and one year at Prairie View School. Her passion was teaching and she loved each child. Gail enjoyed attending her children’s sports events, watching movies, shopping, dancing, camping, and fishing. Survivors include her husband, Jim Schlosser; daughter, Deanna M. (Larry) Torres of Minot, ND; sons, Rudy (Vanessa) King of Yigo, Guam and Johnny Schlosser of Conrad; parents, Thomas and Doris Hartmann of Missouri; brothers, Dave (Mary Lou) Hartmann of Anaconda, Tommy (Mary) Hartmann of Billings, and Jeff Hartmann of Gig Harbor, WA; sister, Jill (Randy) Boyce of Overland Park, KS; and 2 grandchildren, Tommy and Trent.

Carol Jean Robbins
(Died August 18, 2015)

Carol Jean (Peltier) Robbins, 75, passed away Tuesday, August 18, at Benefis Hospital in Great Falls of heart failure. Vigil and Rosary services will begin at 7pm on Friday, August 21 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, August 22, at 10:30am at the church followed by a luncheon in the parish hall. Burial of ashes will be at 1pm on Saturday at Hillside cemetery. Carol was born August 5, 1940 to Victor and Mable Marie Peltier in Eureka. She was raised and attended school in Eureka. After graduating from Eureka High School she attended Carroll College where she received a B.A. in Science. Carol married Joe Robbins in Eureka in 1962. She worked from 1963 to 1984 at Pondera Medical Center as a Med Tech. In 1984 she joined Joe in owning and working in the family clothing business, Robbins Department Store, until retiring in 1998. Carol was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and volunteered to help in many ways. She also helped deliver food with Meal on Wheels. Carol enjoyed gardening, cooking, and sewing. Survivors include husband, Norman Joseph Robbins; daughters, Kathy (Bruce) Hauer of Lewistown, ID and Denise (Tony) Nopper of Bozeman; sons, Alan (Jackie) Robbins of Big Fork, and Victor (Lori) Robbins of Livingston; sisters, Faye Stoken, Dorothy Newton, and Rita Frank; brothers, Victor Peltier, Joe Peltier, and John Peltier; 24 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Ellen Peltier and brother, Tim Peltier.

William "Bill" Gernaat
(Died August 19, 2015)

William Gernaat, 95, long time farmer, passed away Wednesday, August 19, at Peace Hospice. Memorial services will be Saturday, August 22, at 3pm at Conrad First Presbyterian Church. Burial to follow in Hillside cemetery with a reception after at Conrad Moose Lodge. Bill was born March 24, 1920 in Conrad to Jacob and Lammechien Gernaat. He married Jessie Elizabeth Sutton on June 8, 1941. Together they had two children, Bill and Ruth. Jessie died on August 9, 1981. On September 22, 1982, Bill married Angie Mills. Angie died in 2008. Bill spent his life farming, enjoying his time operating the combine into his late years. He loved to dance, seldom missing an opportunity. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, shooting pool, hunting, and snowmobiling. Bill loved playing practical jokes and a good fight: ones involving water, mashed potatoes, wet tea bags, or rubberbands. Survivors include daughter, Ruth (Cliff) Paulsen of Conrad; daughter-in-law, Mary Gernaat of Great Falls; grandchildren, Michelle (Larry) Goyette, Laurice (Doug) Cady, Melissa Kallstrom, Keith Kallstrom, Collette (Dave) Stinar, Roger (Wendy) Paulsen, and Dan (Debbi) Paulsen; 19 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and special friends, Elaine Miller and LaVay Emrick. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, Jessie Gernaat; his dance partner, Angie Gernaat; parents; son, William Gernaat; brothers, Jacob “Jake” and John Gernaat; and sisters, Lena Moore and Mecheliena Jean “Mac” Cloninger. Memorials can be made to F.F.A Organization or any Golf Scholarship.

Clarence R. Boehm
(Died August 30, 2015)

Reverend Clarence Boehm, 88, passed away August 21, 2015 at Pondera Medical Center Extended Care. Funeral services were held September 3 at Pondera Funeral Home. Burial with military honors followed in Hillside cemetery. Clarence was born January 20, 1927 in Struthers, Ohio to Ed and Francis Boehm. After graduation he enlisted into the Army Air Force where he served during the end of World War II in Switzerland. Clarence was honorably discharged in 1948. He attended the Biola Bible College. Clarence married Dolores Dundas in California in 1956. Together they served in the mission field in Alaska for sixteen years. They then moved to Brady where Clarence went on to finish his Associates degree through Liberty University. During the summers he worked for US Customs in Alaska. Clarence worked for US Custom for 14 years until retirement. They then moved to Kalispell where he was a visitation pastor. In 2010 Clarence and Dolores moved back to Brady. Survivors include his wife, Dolores Boehm; sons, Tim Boehm of Shelby, Thomas (Mary) Boehm of Elbing, KS, and Ted (Kayla) Boehm of Pacos, TX; 16 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Art and Eddie Boehm.
