Virginia was born November 17, 1919, in Lewistown, Montana. She was the second of three children born to Walter and Hattie Kojetin. The family moved to Great Falls when she was about five and also lived in Black Eagle where Walter was employed at the Smelter. Virginia attended Collins Grade School, St. Mary’s and other local schools, before graduating from Great Falls High School. She attended business college and then worked for Kopps Piano House and attorneys John Stafford and O. B. Kotz.
In 1940, Virginia married Earl Westrom and they made their home in Black Eagle where he worked for Phillips Refinery. She was a homemaker and was active in many church activities. Virginia and Earl were married for 62 years and raised four children.

All nine grandchildren received a handmade quilt after high school graduation. Virginia was the family photographer and said that all the photos and albums told the story of her family. She always remembered birthdays and anniversaries with cards and letters and initiated family reunions. She celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends at Missouri River Manor in 2009 and was presented with a memory book from her family of photos, drawings, and memories.
Virginia loved shoes, music, dancing, and people. She was very sociable and would strike up a conversation with complete strangers and would soon know all about them and then remember their names and the names of their children and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Friday, March 16, 2012 at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church. Cremation has taken place under the direction of O’Connor Funeral Home.

She graduated from Great Falls High School in 1937. She attended Montana College for one year as a nursing student and completed 6 months nurse’s training at the Deaconess Hospital.
Since her father worked for the Great Northern Railroad, the family was able to take train trips to see extended family. At the age of six, she traveled with her family to visit relatives in Kentucky and Galveston, Texas. This sparked her life-long sense of adventure.
While visiting her sister, Ann Alt, who was teaching at Orr School on the Smith River, she met her future husband Mike Surmi. They married February 21, 1942. Mike, a coal miner, had shares in coal mines in Hound Creek, the Musselshell, and Number 7 (Sand Coulee). For a time, he was a sawyer on the Libby Dam construction project. Louise was by his side through it all. They eventually settled back in Great Falls where Mike worked as a tram operator for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company smelter. Mike and Louise purchased the westside family home where she lived for the rest of her life.
In her sixties, she convinced her two sisters to purchase a canoe and float the Missouri River from Point Loma to the Fred Robinson Bridge. For eight years that canoe saw annual trips on the wild and scenic river. Those trips included the additions of nieces and friends along the way.
Her passions were knitting/crocheting, sewing, flower gardening and for the last twenty years of her life, genealogy. She spent many hours tracing her mother’s family tree in the Salt Lake City archives and trips to Kentucky. Since Mike was an avid hunter and fisherman, Louise, in every kind of weather, was at his side matching him step for step and cast for cast.
Louise became a member of Helen C. Roberts Chapter #71 Order of the Eastern Star where she served two terms as Worthy Matron. She was also Worthy Matron of Alma Chapter in Belt and a member of Cascade Chapter in Cascade. She spent hundreds of happy hours visiting her OES friends around the state.
