Verle 'Bob' DeVore

BILLINGS — Verle "Bob" DeVore, 71, of Billings, a retired district manager for Interstate Bakery, died following complications from open-heart surgery Wednesday in Billings.

A celebration of his life is 4 p.m. Saturday at Billings Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, followed by a wake at the home of Katherine Jabs. His memorial service is 2 p.m. Feb. 19 at Cremation or Funeral Gallery in Billings.

Survivors include his companion, Katherine Jabs; children Mark DeVore and Kirk DeVore, both of Bozeman, and Cindy Rapstad of Great Falls; brothers Ralph DeVore of Pensacola, Fla., and Fritz DeVore of Scio, Ore.; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Marsh) DeVore on Jan. 17, 1997.

Marian Elizabeth Mills

Marian Elizabeth (Boles) Mills, 72, of 70 Eaton Ave., a homemaker, died of natural causes Wednesday at her home.

Visitation is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Croxford Funeral Home and Crematory. Her funeral is 1 p.m. Saturday at Croxford's Rose Room, with burial in Highland cemetery, followed by a reception at the Elks Club.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest L. Mills of Great Falls; daughters Karen (Bill) Thomas of Great Falls, and Patty Mills and fiancée Paul Regimbal, of Great Falls; sons Thomas (Joyce) Mills, Ernest Mills Jr., Bruce (Mary) Mills and Robert (Terri) Mills, all of Great Falls; sisters Bonnie Barksdale of Anaconda, Betty Craven and Maxine Jones of Great Falls and Ramona Williams of Griffin, Ga.; a brother, Ed Boles Jr. of Great Falls; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Marian was born April 18, 1932, in Great Falls, to Ed and Evelyn Boles, where she was raised and educated.

She met Ernest Mills and they were married Dec. 23, 1949, in Great Falls. Ernest was in the U.S. Air Force and they traveled 24 years from base to base.

In 1968, they returned to Great Falls so Ernest could retire.

The most important thing to her was her family. She loved the holidays so all her family and friends could get together. She was an avid bowler for many years, and loved to camp out and fish with her husband.

Glen R. Stevens

VAUGHN — Glen R. Stevens, 86, of Vaughn, an Army veteran and retired farmer, died of natural causes Wednesday at a Choteau nursing home.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place under the direction of O'Connor Funeral Home.

Survivors include a daughter, Simone Roberson of Vaughn; sons Dennis Stevens of Friendswood, Texas, and Phillip Stevens of Lewiston, Idaho; a sister, Mary Campbell of Richland, Wash.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Glen was born Nov. 3, 1918, in Deary, Idaho, where he was raised.

He married Dorothy Cary on Nov. 20, 1943, in San Francisco. She died Feb. 27, 2003.

Glen served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, with the 705th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He was involved with the Normandy Invasion, Northern France Battle of the Bulge and the Rhineland Invasion. He was awarded a Purple Heart and was known by his fellow soldiers as "Idaho."

After the war, he returned to Deary, Idaho, where he farmed for many years until he retired at which time he moved to Vaughn to be closer to his daughter.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW, and loved to play cribbage.

Iris Barr

Iris (Forbes) Barr, 89, former legal secretary and resident of Great Falls, died of natural causes Tuesday at an assisted care facility in Wayne, N.J.

Visitation is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at O'Connor Memorial Chapel. Her funeral is 2 p.m. Monday, with burial in Highland cemetery.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Tripodi, of Wayne, N.J.; a son, Frank Barr, of Titusville, N.J.; a sister, Daisy Harnish, of Great Falls; and four grandchildren.

Iris was born May 25, 1915, in Highwood, and raised in Great Falls. She married James Barr in 1948. He died in 1972.

Her parents, Frank and Elizabeth Forbes, preceded her in death.

Melvin M. Richmond

World War II Army veteran Melvin M. Richmond, 86, of 726 5th Ave. N., a longtime resident of Great Falls, died of natural causes Thursday morning at a local nursing home.

At his request, no services are planned. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Schnider Funeral Home.

He is survived by his wife, Irene (Bucko) Richmond of Great Falls; a brother, James R. Richmond of Great Falls; a sister, Kathleen Baldridge of Broken Arrow, Okla.; and several nephews and nieces.

Melvin was born in Fredrika, Iowa, June 23, 1918, where he received his education. He and his wife Irene were married in Great Falls in October of 1945.

During World War II he served as a cryptographer with the 830th Engineer Aviation Battalion, in the U.S. Army. He retired from the Great Falls Tribune after 43 years.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Lou Richmond, and his parents.

Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.

Elizabeth Pohlod

Elizabeth "Liz" Pohlod, 91, of Belt, died of natural causes Saturday at a local hospital.

Her memorial service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Belt Community Church. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Schnider Funeral Home.

Survivors include a sister, Pauline Grena of Belt.

Gladys Roberta Smith

HAVRE — Gladys Roberta (Patrick) Smith, 93, of Havre, a retired teacher and former Hill County Superintendent of Schools, died of natural causes Dec. 2 at her home.

Her funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Havre, with burial in Highland cemetery, followed by a fellowship luncheon at the church. Holland and Bonine Funeral Home of Havre is handling arrangements.

Gladys is survived by her daughter, Maureen Dolan of Havre; grandchildren Trevor and Tyler Smith of Havre, Mike Dolan of Billings and Wade Dolan of Phoenix; brothers Raymond, Wayne and Bernard Patrick, all of Havre and Don Patrick of Grafton, Iowa; sisters Ruth Meredith of Havre and Phyllis Gagnon of Chester; and two great-grandchildren, Chase Smith and Kameron Dolan.

Gladys was born Feb. 9, 1911, to Charles and Sadie (Gale) Patrick at LaBelle, Mo.

In 1915, the family of then four children with their parents homesteaded north of Rudyard.

Gladys was the second-oldest of fifteen children.

She was raised and educated in the Goldstone area, graduating from Rudyard High School in 1928.

Gladys married Marvin R. Smith in 1933, and they had three children.

Gladys continued her education at Northern Montana College, receiving a one-year teaching degree in 1931.

Her first job at Swift School included three siblings among the 28 students.

Over the years, Gladys taught at Zurich, Rocky Boy, Shambo and in 1950, transferred to the Havre Public Schools as an elementary classroom teacher.

She also served as a principal at Washington School.

In 1962, Gladys was elected as Hill County Superintendent of Schools, a position she held until 1968, and then returned to the classroom.

Gladys retired from active teaching in 1971, continuing to substitute, doing speaking engagements and serving as Guest Artist in the Classroom for many years.

Gladys loved sports. She played basketball in high school and college, and pitched horseshoes with her brothers and friends.

She joined the Havre Golf League, bowled at Big Sandy and Havre and loved playing softball in the Havre Women's League.

She was known for her pitching ability and was inducted into the Montana Softball Hall of Fame in 1988.

Her softball career ended at the age of 72 after 30 years of playing.

In the summer, Gladys grew a large garden of vegetables and flowers.

She sold her vegetables at the Farmer's Market from Smith's Gardens and her flowers were entered for judging at the Hill County Fair.

Her other hobbies included collecting barbwire of which she collected over 200 different types.

She also collected antiques and match box holders.

Gladys was an avid bridge player and received the highest honor in 1981 as a Life Master.

She loved working with her hands, she crocheted, sculptured and oil painted.

Gladys wanted the family to be acquainted with one another.

Being from a large family, its members were very important to her.

So Gladys organized the first family reunion in 1977, and it has continued every four years.

Gladys was affiliated with the Home Demonstration Club and the Eagles, for which she received her fifty-year recognition.

She was the author of Foot-Step Across Years 1911-1992, an autobiography that is on display at the Montana Historical Society.

Along with her niece, Linda Patrick Hayes, she also produced a family quarterly newspaper, the Patrick Post.

She appeared on TV on Dec 30, 1960, on the Charge Account with Jan Murray, and appeared again in 1975 to be interviewed by a Spokane TV station.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin Smith in 1962; a daughter, Karen Taylor in 1993; a son, Richard Smith in 2004; and an infant brother as well as other brothers Ralph, Russell, Floyd, Clarence, Cecil, Clifford and Richard.

Memorials in Gladys' honor may be made to the MSU-Northern Foundation, P.O. Box 1691, Havre, MT 59501; or to Bear Paw Hospice, P.O. Box 1231, Havre, MT 59501.

Elizabeth M. Hale

Elizabeth M. (Zerkel) Hale, 74, of 100 Central Ave., a retired clerk and recorder in Illinois, died of natural causes Saturday at Peace Hospice.

Services are pending at O'Connor Funeral Home.

Phillip James Guardipee Sr.

BROWNING — Phillip James Guardipee, 64, of Browning, a chemical dependency technician, died of cancer Friday at a Great Falls hospital.

His wake is in progress at Old Eagle Shield Center in Browning, with a prayer service is 7 p.m. Tuesday.

His funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the center, with burial in Willow Creek cemetery.

Day Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Survivors include daughter Junita Guardipp Dubray, LaVonne Guardipee Peterson, Dawn Bad Old Man and Nicole "Nikki" Bad Old Man; sons Phillip James Guardipee Jr., Robert James Guardipee, Quinten Guardipee, Kevin Guardipee, Dennis Guardipee, Michael Guardipee and Corey Bad Old Man; a sister, Montana Guardipee; brothers Ronald Guardipee and Lloyd Gurardipee, all of Browning, and numerous grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Faye Guardipee.
