Gary Bolles
PLENTYWOOD - Funeral services for Gary Bolles will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday. United Methodist Pastors Carter and Myrna Havner will officiate at the service at the Plentywood Lutheran Church building; interment will be in Emmaus cemetery. Gary, 46, collapsed at his Plentywood home Sunday morning, June 21, and was dead on arrival at Sheridan Memorial Hospital of a sudden cardiac event.
Gary was born at Seattle, Wash., Feb. 8, 1952, the son of Ralph and Rachael (Spoklie) Bolles. He grew up on the family farm near Coalridge, and graduated from Antelope High School. He attended Billings Automotive College and Denver Diesel Institute, training as an automotive and diesel mechanic. For a year, he worked for Cardinal Drilling Company in Billings, repairing diesels in the oilfield. For four summers he worked as a mechanic for Yellowstone Park Service Stations at Canyon Village, where he met Pat Quaas. The winter of 1974 he worked in security and as a tow truck driver for the ski resort at Snowbird, Utah; and on Nov. 29, 1975, he and Pat were married at Alburnett, Iowa. He worked as a mechanic for the Buick Dealership in Waterloo, Iowa, the winter of 1975; and in 1976 he and Pat returned to Montana, where Gary joined the family farming operations at Coalridge. Besides farming, Gary continued working as a mechanic; for a number of years for Big M Oilfield Service; then, in partnership with two other men, operated "McBollee Trucking," an independent trucking firm. He later worked for Prairie Pipeline and Sheridan Ready Mix. Although he always had trouble with formal "school" settings, Gary loved to learn and pursue his varied interests. When he saw a need, he was generous to a fault and would devote endless hours to helping anyone solve problems; for example, he and Kent Syme designed and fabricated a successful hydraulic boring machine for Prairie Pipeline, and a lot of farm machinery, heavy trucks, and cars and pickups are still running thanks to his attention. Jared relates that when Gary worked on something, he always took the time to fix it right - he would wait for the correct parts, and refused to force anything to fit. Parts, tools, or home remodeling - whatever he did - he always did it the best way. Happiest just being with his family, one-on-one with his close friends, or immersed in a diesel engine, Gary disliked crowds, and idle chit-chat. He loved hunting pheasants and elk and tinkering on guns, especially with his kids. Fishing was a vital part of his life; and his family remembers trips to Yellowstone, and to Fort Peck and various Canadian lakes searching for Walleye. He learned to fly, earned a private pilot's certificate, and handled routine aircraft maintenance in the Coalridge Flying Club. His newest toy, the computer, opened a whole world of learning, including understanding the learning disabilities that have plagued Gary all his life. His happy cry, "I just looked it up on the Internet" led to new solutions to a whole range of problems!
Gary is survived by his wife, Pat of Plentywood; and three children, all at home: Jared, Carrie, and David. He is also survived by a sister, Mary and her husband, Eldon Chapman of Broadus, and their children, Forest and Bryce. He is also survived by two aunts, Mildred Francisco of Seattle, and Mary Frances Mingolla of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents; Ralph, June 29, 1988; and Rachael, Sept. 21, 1995.
