Genevieve Pope Herman
Genevieve Camille Pope Herman was born April 18, 1926 to Alice and Henry Pope in Hardin, Mont., and died in her home surrounded by her family on the morning of June 19, 1998 after a courageous fight against liver disease caused by Hepatitis C.
Genevieve attended school in Hardin and married Walter Herman on Dec. 30, 1944. During her journey in life, she and Walter resided in Yakima, Wash., Billings, Bozeman, and West Yellowstone and traveled to Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, and throughout the U.S. She was a historian at heart and, being a third generation Montanan, she spent many hours each day on her computer researching her family history as well as helping others piece together their family charts.
Genevieve was a member of the Pioneers of Montana and chapters of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia for which she wrote newsletters and articles.
Geney's favorite times were sitting on the shore of a lake or in a boat watching her fishing line float while listening to her music, and two stepping to old country tunes at dances or in her kitchen. She loved gardening, Montana history and books, crocheting, collecting antiques, western and old timers music, fishing, sewing and quilting, and her friends; but her greatest love of all was for her family.
Her love, humor, and memory will continue through her family: Her husband Walter Herman, her daughter Janice Herman Handsaker and husband Larry of Billings, her daughter Cathie Herman Schoer and husband Gary of Helena, and her daughter Debi Herman of Kansas City, including her grandchildren Josh and Heidi Handsaker, Jennifer Handsaker Sullivan, Lori, Scott, Lisa, Lillian, and Turner Schoer, and great-granddaughters Karli and Elli Sullivan and her brother Sam Pope of Boise. She was preceded in death by her younger brother "Sonny" Henry J. Pope Jr.
A memorial service for Genevieve will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 22, at the Smith Westend Chapel. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made in her name to the American Liver Foundation at 1425 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove, N.J., 07009.

Post No. 4099, Sidney. Lunch to follow in the church basement, under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
There are times when our mortality is humbling. This is one of those times. It is now that we must remember that "life is not a destiny, it is a journey." On Sept. 8, 1940, in the small farming community of Bowdon, N.D., Ida (Knodel) and Leo Free Sr. were blessed with a baby boy, Robert Gene Free.
Bob grew up and attended rural school near Bowdon. He was an adventurous youth, jockeying both horses and Harleys, always displaying his trademark grin in all that he did. At the age of 17, Bob fulfilled what he felt was his civic obligation and enlisted in the United States Army. After initial training at Fort Carson, he was stationed in Germany for two years. In 1959, he was honorably discharged and returned home to Bowdon where he worked on the family farm.
Then, in 1960, over a dinner date in Fessenden, N.D., Bob noticed a twinkle in the eyes of a local girl he had recently met. Six months later, on July 2, 1960, Bob married the love of his life, Margaret Tuenge. The newlyweds moved to Tioga, N.D., for a short time while Margaret finished college in Minot and Bob worked in the oilfield. Their next move took them to Concrete, N.D., where Bob worked for a local farmer and Margaret took on her first teaching assignment. Soon thereafter, they moved to Rock Lake, N.D., where their first baby girl, Debbie, was born. It was the seed for a close, loving family to begin growing. The young family next moved to Bob's hometown of Bowdon. Again, the family blossomed with the arrival of another baby girl, Darla, and yet another baby girl, Diane, two years later. While working for Wells County as a heavy equipment operator, Bob suffered a back injury which led to three major back surgeries. He realized that he had a young family to support, and because of his injury, decided to go back to school. The family moved to Moorhead, Minn., and Bob enrolled in the Moler Barber College.
After graduating, Bob moved his family to Sidney in 1967. He began honing his barbering skills while working for Wilbur Bell and Roy Hagen at the OK Barber Shop. Then, when the others quit barbering, Bob purchased the shop which he operated for 10 years. While building his reputation at the barbershop, Bob was blessed with another child, this time a son, Bobby Jr. In 1977, he moved the family to Glasgow to pursue a job in the insurance industry. After a year and a half, Bob and Margaret realized that Sidney was home, and moved back to be near friends and family. Upon returning, Bob started B&M Hole Service with his wife, Margaret, and set out on another adventure in his rich life. He made many friends and acquaintances while operating his business over a four state area before having to retire in 1984 due to heart complications. He opened Bob's Barbershop in the Torgerson Realty Building and operated it for a couple years before his brother, Doug, took over the operation. He always said "people didn't come into the shop for a haircut . . . they came in for the good old fashioned BS." His customers might come in realizing only that they needed a haircut, but they always left with a smile which he felt they needed.
Retirement turned Bob's focus to a labor of love. He had always been known for his helpfulness and jovial nature. It was his "open" schedule which allowed him to do the things he loved most. As a lifetime VFW member and a post commander, he committed a large portion of his time to helping fellow veterans and veterans' families when the need arose. His people skills were natural and had been polished by being actively involved with the Jaycees, the Chamber of Commerce, Sidney Booster's Club, Military Order of the Cootie, NRA, Walleyes Unlimited, Sidney Rifle Club, Sidney Sportsman's Club, Sidney Bowhunter's Club, and the Lion's Club (charter member). God was near to Bob's heart and it shone through in his active involvement with his church. A past president, he stayed active with Monday morning bible class, Lutheran Laymen's League, and was a member of the Montana District Board of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod from 1991 to 1997.
Dad . . . you taught us kids everything we needed to know about life. Perseverance. Respect. Common sense. Loyalty. Commitment. Dreams, and how to achieve them. And most importantly how to love. Your hands were strong when they needed to be, and soft and caring when we needed it most. You loved life. You lived life to its fullest measure. You fought the fight, your fight is done. You are free. You are at peace with your Savior. We love you Dad.
Bob Free was reunited with his heavenly Father on June 16, 1998, at Sidney Health Center after a long fight with heart disease. He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Sidney; daughter, Deb and husband, Justin Jackson of Sidney; daughter, Darla Fields and Stan of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter, Diane Strand and Mike Obergfell of Sidney; son, Bob Jr. of Sidney; and a special son, Ron Fields of Sidney.
